Kia begins selling new cars through eBay in the US

kia ebay

In the US, Kia Motors has begun selling new vehicles through eBay, making it the first major automaker to do so. Through its online store, customers can search and shop through the new Kia vehicle inventory across all participating dealers and make offers online through eBay’s “Best Offer” option.

Now, from the comfort of their own home environment, consumers can have a convenient shopping experience deciding what they want from the brand’s lineup. More than 345 Kia dealers in the US have signed up to list their entire stock of new Kia vehicle inventory online.

The stats say this trend is on the upswing – J.D. Power and Associates says that Internet auto shoppers are up 17% in 2010, and 79% of all auto shoppers source third-party websites such as eBay Motors before making a purchase.

Naturally, the assumption is that the consumer still goes to the showroom once he/she has decided on a model to ascertain that it’s the right choice. But one wonders if in the future, there’d be anyone who’d buy a new car without seeing or touching it in the metal first; no test drive, no walkabout, just select, order, pay and the car gets delivered to you. It’ll take a lot of bravado to do so. Intriguing, to say the least.

Audi introduces the RS 3 Sportback – 340 hp and 450 Nm!

audi rs 3 1

Yet another model joins the Audi RS series lineup, and this one is the big, bad version of the A3 called the RS 3 Sportback. There’s no shortage of pizzazz here, for sure, what with 340 hp and 450 Nm as well as a 0-100 kph sprint time of 4.6 secs kicking off this particular dynamic parade.

Styling-wise, the car, which is of course developed by Audi subsidiary quattro, gets the RS dress up treatment, and the front features an anthracite single-frame grill with diamond-patterned styling, new air intakes, a front apron, and front fenders made of carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP).

Throw in prominent sill panels, exterior-mirror casings in matt aluminium, a large roof spoiler and a high-gloss black diffusor insert at the rear, along with two elliptical exhaust tailpipes and you’ve got the new clothes this one wears.

Oh, and RS 3 badging both front and rear, of course.

audi rs 3 2

The entirely black interior carries a number of RS 3 logos as well, in case you ever forget what it is you’re driving. The sports seats wear fine Nappa leather with silver contrasting stitching, and you get Piano finish black or the new Aluminum Race look for inlay finishes. Elsewhere, the selector lever and instruments for the RS 3 are unique, and the vehicle’s driver information system can display the boost pressure and oil temperature as well as a lap timer.

As the heart of the all-wheel drive RS 3 is a 2.5 litre TFSI five-cylinder turbocharged pot, first seen on the TT RS, and the 340 horses (available between 5,400 and 6,500 rpm) translates into a specific power output of 137.1 hp per litre. As for the torque, the 450 Nm is available from 1,600 rpm right up to 5,300 rpm. The turbocharger generates up to 1.2 bar of boost pressure, with an intercooler downstream efficiency rate of over 80%.

audi rs 3 3

The 183 kg block features a crankcase made of vermicular-graphite cast iron – Audi’s the first car maker to use this a high-strength, yet lightweight material in a gasoline engine, and helping to keep the weight in check means paying off big for the RS 3 in terms of axle-load distribution and handling.

The RS 3 features a seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch transmission, with a operational choice of two automatic modes and one manual mode – paddle shifters and a launch control system round things off. Meanwhile, the quattro all-wheel drive features an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch mounted at the end of the propeller shaft to achieve a favourable axle load distribution.

Performance-wise, the 1,575 kg car manages an electronically-limited 250 kph top speed, and it growls all the way in that signature RS manner, with a sound flap in the exhaust branch intensifying the sound even further (the flap is controlled via the standard Sport button, which also varies the engine response). Despite it being a scorcher, it’s also very much a sipper – the claimed average consumption figure is a neat 9.1 litres per 100 km.

audi rs 3 5

As would be the case, the RS 3 Sportback gets a number of suspension and geometry revisions to help it handle like its life depended on it. The sports suspension on the RS 3 lowers it by 25 mm compared with the stock A3, and at the front the track has been widened, with the McPherson struts featuring a separate subframe; key components are made of aluminium. At the back, the four-link suspension is also anchored to a subframe and features high-strength-steel control arms that allow it to handle longitudinal and lateral forces separately.

Stopping power is through a brake system made up of four-pot calipers (finished in high-gloss black and bearing the RS logo) and 370 mm front and 310 mm rear ventilated discs. The car wears 19-inch cast aluminium wheels finished in machine-polished titanium as standard, with a black with a red rim flange available as an option – the wheels sit on 235/35 series front and 225/35 rear rubbers.

audi rs 3 4

In terms of kit, there’s a rear parking system, climate control, chorus radio system and xenon plus headlights with LED daytime running lights as standard, among other things. Optional equipment includes front bucket seats, matt aluminium roof rails and styling packages in black or matt aluminium.

The car will be made at Audi Hungaria in Gyor, and deliveries are slated to begin in early 2011. Gallery after the jump.

VIDEO: Megane RS 250 at Sepang with driver comments!

The arrival of the Megane Renault Sport 250 Cup to our shores is a godsend for car enthusiasts. No longer based on the five-door body with two doors lopped off, the new Megane RS looks spectacular and perfects the great formula of the previous gen R26 – turbocharged punch, Cup chassis, mechanical LSD and real world usability. And priced at RM229,800, it’s relative good value for what’s on offer.

Before the launch, we showed you a teaser video of the Megane taking on Sepang and setting a lap time of 2:43.02 in the hands of race driver Denis Lian. Now, Renault has released the full video of the RS on track, complete with the Singaporean ace driver’s comments. Apparently, they finished one and a half fuel tanks of petrol in that track session with no issues, proving Renault’s claims that the RS is a good track weapon.

“This car really took me by surprise. The amount of mid corner grip it had and the adjustability of the chassis, ‘cos usually front engine cars are quite understeery and you can’t really adjust the chassis. This car, you come into the slow corners, you can trail brake in and the back end rotates, but it doesn’t snap out.

“It rotates, it tightens the line and you can power through very very easily even on the exit – there’s so much grip,” the ex-A1GP driver said.

“And it’s not just the speed, it was fun to drive, that’s the main thing. The chassis was so fun to play with, which is very unexpected in a front wheel drive car. As a track day tool, look at me, I had a ball of a time,” Denis concludes. I’ve had the honour to be ferried by Denis in an Elise before, and trust me, this guy knows what having fun in a car is really about!

Watch out for a test drive report that’s coming your way soon!

The Cadillac Aera – giving a new meaning to polyhedral

caddy aera

Joining the Smart 454 WWT as the joint winner of the 2010 Los Angeles Design Challenge is General Motors Advanced Design California’s Cadillac Aera, which takes Cadillac’s philosophy of Art and Science into new territory with an innovative and stylistic ultra-light weight vehicle.

The Aera, which gets its name from a merger of the words Aero and Era, fits the design challenge’s theme of a 1000 lb four-seater vehicle, in this case in a 2+2 touring coupe form, and it can travel 1,600 km before refueling.

caddy aera 2

The Aera works with a 3D lattice, mono-formed frame – the polyhedral structure is similar to configurations found consistently in nature, like inside the grouping of bubbles. It’s built with a unique, alloy-utilising, semi-solid freeform manufacturing process, with all major body parts – including interior components – essentially “grown” into a single part lattice structure.

The Aera is powered by compressed air (like the Volvo Air Motion) via a highly efficient Pneumatic Drive System (PDS), and the 10,000 psi composite air storage tank has ample capacity for a 1,600 km range. Flexible, pressurized air cells in the exterior skin – similar to material developed for the NASA Mars Rover airbags – enhance passive safety and interior comfort. The flexible polymer skin optimises the Aera’s aerodynamics and functions as an ultra-lightweight alternative to conventional body panels and glass.

caddy aera 3

Additional technologies include an All-In-One (AIO) wheel system, combining rotary actuator propulsion, steering and suspension functions, as well as a drive by wireless system, which decreases the usage of electrical components and vehicle to vehicle communication (V2V).

Smart 454 WWT – built by granny robots!

smart 454 1

There’s no doubting that the annual Los Angeles Design Challenge – which runs in conjuction with the LA show – comes up with some really novel futuristic vehicle designs, and this year has been no different. The 2010 winner happens to be two designs – the end result was that the judges decided both General Motors Advanced Design California’s Cadillac Aera entry and Mercedes-Benz Advanced Design’s Smart 454 WWT were even stevens for novelty and ingenuity.

The theme for the challenge this year was to envision an efficient, light-weight, four passenger vehicle that’s stylish, drives well and is comfortable and safe, while not exceeding 1,000 lbs (454 kg) – the Volvo Air Motion was one of the entries this year.

A bit about the winsome twosome, with the Smart 454 WWt having first dibs. The concept gets its number from the weight in kilograms, and the WWT stands for Weight Watch Technologies, for the “company” that has come up with the design. Now, if the name suggests a playful take on things, well, it all is, every last bit of it.

smart 454 3

The Smart 454 WWT is manufactured by incredibly high-tech robots that look as friendly and cuddly as grandmothers – the Tridion-frame chassis is knit by WWT’s Smart Granny Robots (otherwise know as SGRs) out of carbon fibre, and the knitting can create complex shapes and forms, enabling the geometry to be optimised in strength and weight.

Different materials are used for each individual part, so every piece of the car has its own specific properties and look, and it’s all pretty precise – only the exact amount of material necessary is used, for an optimal balance between weight and function (Colin Chapman would undoubtedly have been proud).

smart 454 2

Material-wise, the windows, fenders and bumpers are all made of recyclable plastics with ingrained colors, and the roof is made up of a thin, but highly durable recycled textile that comes with different prints and weavings. The modular “clip-on” construction principal allows easy and endless customising – the doors, roof, engine and drive-train are very easy to remove or exchange, allowing for perfect functionality, looks, fun and the best tuning for any occasion.

The 454 WWT features lightweight carbon fibre wheels with integrated suspension, and proprietary SGR technology allows for truly unique looking rims, not to mention the lightest ones too. It’s powered by two 15 kW electric engines, with juice provided by an exchangeable Li-Ion battery pack, located between the two rear wheels to effect the shortest transfer path possible.

Won a BMW X6 35iM through the mail? Well, it’s a scam!

bmw lottery

Oh dear, it looks like the scammers have gotten to looking at car companies now in a bid to part you and your money (please, no bad jokes about selling cars being that now …). Following a spate of bogus emails that have been spreading across South East Asia, BMW Group Malaysia has released a statement saying that BMW does not offer cash prizes or BMW nor MINI cars as part of free prize draws.

Apparently, an email entitled ‘BMW Car International Promotion Program’ has been circulating the Internet, and the recipient of the mail is told that he/she has won 750,000 sterling pounds as well as an X6 35iM from the ‘BMW Lottery Department UK’, which along with the ‘The BMW International Awareness Promotions,’ has no relationship whatsoever with the BMW Group nor with BMW Group Malaysia.

“We are aware that there are and have been a number of similar emails in circulation and we are currently investigating how to prevent those responsible from using BMW’s name in such a way. We advise anyone who receives the email to not enter into correspondence with the sender,” BMW Group Malaysia’s corporate communications manager Sashi Ambi said in a statement.

Apparently, versions of the mail have been circulating about for years now, with rather fancy models designations such as the 550i M, X6 35i Sport Saloon and X6 Concept being spewed. Giving away a concept, yes, sure …

The CARe 500 EV – get one with or without batteries!

care 500

German energy supply company mk-group Holding has come out with the CARe 500, an electric car based on the Fiat 500, and with this one, you can choose to buy it with or without batteries.

Erm, that’s right. Fully-loaded, a CARe 500 goes for 36,900 euros, with various subsidies reducing this amount. Buy one without the batteries and the cost begins from 23,900 euros. Of course you’ll need batteries for the needed juice to get the car going, and these you can “rent” for 150 euros per month; the cost includes a flat-rate fee for electricity.

“The advantage of purchasing the car without batteries is that, for 150 euros per month, you will always have fully functional batteries at your disposal, you don’t have to actually purchase the most expensive part of an electric car and fuel is included at a flat rate,” says mk-group Holding’s CEO Richard Kristek.

Manufactured by Swedish company EVadapt, the CARe 500 is a series production vehicle with a fully electric drive, and offers a range of 120 km and a maximum speed of 120 kph. It recharges in six to eight hours using a normal 230V power socket, and a service network of approximately 650 branches ensure the mobility of these electric cars.

VW to invest 51.6 bil euros in next five years – the aim is to be the No1 automaker in the world by 2018

Volkswagen is planning to invest around 51.6 billion euros in its automotive division over the next five years. More than half of this investment will be in Germany, with primary spending to be on property, plants and equipment, it said in a statement.

It’s no secret that the VW is aiming at surpassing Toyota as the top carmaker globally by 2018, and as such, the Strategy 2018 programme it has set out will see the company investing around 27.7 billion euros to modernise and extend the product range of all its brands, these being VW, Audi, Skoda, Seat, Bentley, Porsche and Lamborghini.

The focus will of course be on new vehicles, derivatives and replacement models in all product classes, and the aim is to achieve a systematic model rollout with a view to tapping new markets and segments. This will be supplemented with the launching of new generations of engines with enhanced performance, fuel consumption and emission levels. In particular, it will drive forward the development of hybrid and electric motors.

Additionally, a 13.6 billion euro has been set aside for cross-product investments over the next five years. The company’s new assembly plant in the US – in Chattanooga, Tennessee – will begin operating in 2011, and production capacity in Russia is also being increased. It has also announced plans to open two more plants in China.

Honda Civic Hybrid and Toyota Prius battery replacement costs revealed!

The Star has a very interesting report which came out yesterday. It answers some of the questions that many motorists thinking of taking the leap to hybrid ownership will be asking, based on interviewing spokespersons from both Toyota and Honda, the only two companies which are selling hybrid cars in Malaysia that benefit from the new zero percent import and excise duty. Porsche also sells the Cayenne Hybrid here but because of its engine size, it doesn’t get any exemptions.

I would only take the battery prices information seriously as everything else are just claims that the cars have no issues.

  • The Toyota Prius battery costs RM11,500.
  • The Honda Civic Hybrid battery costs RM12,000 but there is a 15% discount for customers who buy from authorized dealers.
  • Prius warranty is 3 years or 100,000km which covers battery too.
  • Civic Hybrid warranty for battery is 3 years or 100,000km.
  • UMW Toyota claims there have not been a single battery replacement due to wear and tear in the US, where all generations of Prius have been on sale since 2000.
  • Priuses used as taxis in the US have clocked 400,000km without any hybrid component failure.
  • A Prius taxi that clocked 550,000km in Australia needed battery replacement due to a low voltage reading.
