Subaru Impreza Design Concept shows new design theme

Subaru has unveiled this Impreza Design Concept in LA, which previews the carmaker’s new “Confidence in Motion” design and brand strategy. The brand seems to change ideas with every generation of cars, so it’s anyone’s guess not just when this new look will debut, but how long it’ll last.

Said to include “possible future Subaru design elements” the Impreza Design Concept (IDC) is yet another “four-door coupe” style concept with room for four. The designers blended two ideas – “dynamic flow and confident stance” – to showcase Subaru’s engineering core values of dynamic performance, safety, driving enjoyment and quality.

From the front, IDC wears Subaru’s hexagonal grille with spread wings flanked by “hawk eye” headlights. Below them are fin-shaped fog lamps. Remember this look, as it previews the brand’s future look. At the rear, the hexagonal theme repeats with the number plate garnish, where all the lines flow out from. The rear lights, which have a unique layering effect for an impression of depth, are connected to the character line along the car’s flanks.

The IDC looks muscular, and a lot the credit goes to those prominent wheel arches (current Legacy also has them). It was Subaru’s intention to use simple and clean lines and surfaces rather than complicated forms. Other details include wedge-shaped side rear-view cameras and carbon fins on the wheel spokes that aid brake cooling.

Tony Fernandes: Driver lineup ‘highly unlikely’ to change

There has been speculation that the Lotus Racing driver lineup will be changed for next season, with rumours that Jarno Trulli will be the man making way. While both Heikki Kovalainen and Trulli aren’t yet confirmed for 2011, team boss Tony Fernandes has given strong hints that both men will be retained.

“I think we have brought out the best in Heikki. I think Heikki has had probably his greatest year and I think in Jarno we have not given him a good enough car and we want to see him in the best car. He is motivated, he is hungry and it is up to us to give him a good car and his experience will help us build him a better car in 2011,” he told Autosport.

The veteran Italian has been very unlucky throughout Lotus Racing’s maiden season, bearing a big chunk of reliability issues that saw him record eight retirements. Heikki is classified 20th in the driver’s standings, the best of the new teams, while Trulli is 21st.

“I think that it is highly unlikely we will change what we have. I am a big believer in consistency and there have been some very interesting approaches that have been made to us. I took a brave decision in taking two salaried drivers. It showed our attention from day one and we continue to do that, so I don’t see a change unless something miraculous comes up. Consistency is important and keeping a together team, a happy team and strengthening that team is what we are all about,” Fernandes added.

As to when an announcement will be made: “We’re close to being able to say who’s in the car for next year,” team spokesman Tom Webb told the BBC.

Ford Focus Race Car Concept revealed at LA Auto Show

This is the Ford Focus race car concept that was revealed at the LA auto show. Built to compete in global road and touring car racing, this car is a collaborative effort between the Blue Oval and private race teams that have already built and raced Focus race cars. Ford’s support comes in the form of data, engineering tools, testing facilities and production parts.

Based the 2012 Focus body, it should make its first race appearance at the the 2011 British Touring Car Championship. Ford also plans to campaign it in the China Touring Car Championship and 24-hour endurance races like the classic Nürburgring in Germany. Ford claims that the development of the Focus touring car will “provide valuable input” into the production Focus ST, which will be launched in 2012.

The race car will have a 2.0L EcoBoost engine, AST performance coil-over adjustable dampers, Ford Racing sway bars with adjustable end links and front brakes with 320 mm two-piece rotors and race pads. The finished product will conform to FIA Super 2000 regulations.

In addition to a Super 2000 spec roll cage, interior goodies include a Recaro racing seat, AIM MXL Pista data system and AIM SmartyCam. Ford Racing fire suppression system and six-point safety harness round out the mods that make the car race-ready.

Toyota Prius MPV interior photo teased on Facebook!

Toyota has released a new image of the upcoming Toyota Prius MPV, a longer and taller new addition to the Prius family, set to debut at the Detroit Auto Show in January 2011. We don’t know at the moment whether the new Prius family member will have 7-seats or whether it will merely be a “Prius Plus” for those who want larger interior and luggage space.

The latest bit of info is this new teaser image which shows us how the dashboard’s in-car entertainment and climate control area will look like. This shot is from a US market left hand drive car, since the full colour entertainment LCD panel is playing a American radio station. The gearknob and the power button looks similar to the one found in the Prius.

Tony: “Do we keep or do we start brand new identity?”

During our phone conversation with Tony Fernandes a few days ago, he told us that the team wasn’t really sure if they wanted to have “half a team”. He was could have been referring to a situation if they continued using the Team Lotus name and another team called “Lotus-Renault” was on the grid as well.

Then last night, Tony tweeted the above – “So we are going into final stretch of name change. Do we keep or do we start brand new identity. Pls let me know.” Of course I don’t think he meant 100% removing the Lotus name – the final stretch of name change probably referred to the potential change from Lotus Racing to Team Lotus, the name he and his partners Din and Nasa acquired from David Hunt. But now it’s obvious he’s potentially considering giving in to the whole fiasco and calling the team something else next season.

We tried asking him in the phone interview what his other choices of names would be but didn’t really get an answer… let’s wait and see what happens.

Lamborghini unwraps new 6.5L V12 engine, ISR gearbox

UPDATE: More info and video added!

The V12 engine and Lamborghini are inseparable; all poster favourites from the Miura to the Countach and Diablo had one behind the seats. These black and white images are of Lamborghini’s all new V12 engine and automated manual gearbox, essentially the heart of the Murciélago successor that’s due next year. Just like the cars from Sant’Agata, be prepared for some dramatic descriptions.

Codenamed L539, the naturally aspirated 6.5-litre V12′s 700 hp is made at 8,250 rpm while 690 Nm max torque is achieved at 5,500 rpm, 500 revs lower than present. It may be high revving with “highly emotional acoustics” but the V12 will also have “a well-rounded torque curve, beefy pulling power and incredibly spontaneous responsiveness”. Compared to the current V12, the L539 has an increased bore (88 mm to 95 mm) but a reduced stroke (89 mm to 76.4 mm). Compression ratio is up to 11.8:1 from 11:1. No direct injection for now.

Developed “from a clean sheet of paper” the 60 degree V12 will be hand built in Sant’Agata Bolognese. To reduce weight (it’s 18 kg lighter at 235 kg), the crankcase and the four-valve cylinder heads are made from aluminum-silicon alloy. The short-stroke layout ensures high-revving performance and low internal friction, with good thermal management (two switchable water circuits for rapid warm-up) and oil circulation (dry-sump lubrication with eight scavenging pumps) to back up.

There also a complex intake system with four individual throttle valves, where air flows through two flaps, several channels and one bypass. The exhaust system is said to deliver a “spine-tingling Lamborghini sound”. It’s a three-into-one system with two separate mufflers – one low-volume, one high-volume – regulated by ECU controlled valves.

The new V12′s perfect mate is the new 7-speed ISR transmission, designed for “the world’s most emotional gearshift feel”. Shift times for this single clutch ‘box are quick – 40% faster than the Gallardo’s e.gear and almost 50% less than dual-clutch unit, says Lambo – thanks to the ISR (Independent Shifting Rod). Instead of taking place in series, as with a conventional gearbox, shifting can occur virtually in parallel. While one shifting rod is moving out of one gear, the second shifting rod can already engage the next. It’s faster because both actions partially overlap and the mechanical distance is shorter as it bypasses neutral.

There are four ISRs in the gearbox, controlled via hydraulic actuators. The double-plate clutch is also hydraulically actuated. Synchronizing rings are made from carbonfibre. The ISR box’ low weight of 70 kg also compares favourably with twin-clutch units. Three modes are available: Strada (with full auto shift shifting, if you want), Sport and the most hardcore Corsa with launch control.

Looks like the Murciélago successor will be very well equipped to be the top bull in the supercar ring! Gallery and a video after the jump.

Ford Fiesta hatchback to get optional bodykit soon!

ford fiesta bodykit 1

I caught this particular Fiesta while at Sime Auto ConneXion’s Ford PJ showroom snapping photos of the ‘updated’ Focus – it’s a 1.4 litre manual that’s testing out the upcoming bodykit for the car.

There’s already a decent buzz among Fiesta fans regarding the impending kit for the hatch, which consists of a front lower lip, side skirts and new rear diffuser (the hatch’s standard panel will be replaced by this one), though buyers wanting to slap a complete kit on will have to be patient – the side skirting will need some reworking in terms of size.

ford fiesta bodykit 2

As can be seen on the mule, the skirt looks more than a tad blocky, and its dimensions pretty much says it’ll have some ground clearance issues, so Ford are going to trim and reshape that one before the kit gets the go ahead for local production.

Pricing hasn’t been officially announced (well, you’d need a product to sell first), but the word is that the entire bag will be priced around RM3,000, in all probability nicely below that. I’d think that sedan owners won’t be left out eventually – you can just see the possibilities there too!

ford fiesta bodykit 3

Otherwise, it’s rather flashy, the bits, especially the rear diffuser, and that front lip does look quite trick (well, perhaps it could do with a bit more integration to the bumper). What do you think?

GALLERY: US market Hyundai Elantra is a fluidic sculpture

The 2011 Hyundai Elantra will be unveiled to the American public at the LA Auto Show, and Hyundai has released a new set of images of the US market car. Hyundai will use the Elantra nameplate for this C-segment sedan in North America, but it will be called Avante in our market. Malaysians will get to touch and feel the Avante at the KL International Motor Show (KLIMS) 2010 alongside the ix-Metro concept and the revised Santa Fe.

In the US, the Elantra will be powered by a new 1.8L non GDI engine with 148 hp and 178 Nm of torque, mated to Hyundai’s own six-speed automatic. This fresh gallery is the most flattering to the “fluidic sculpture” lines of the Elantra/Avante so far. Hyundai’s new swoopy design language is also evident in the current Tucson and Sonata, but this is the most “full flavoured” example yet.

Mercedes-Benz C300 with AMG sports package launched!

benz c 300 0

Mercedes-Benz Malaysia has introduced another locally-assembled W 204 C-Class model, in this case the range topping C 300, and it’s the first ever 3.0 litre displacement C-Class to be done here.

This one, in Avantgarde trim, comes replete with an AMG sports package, and can be identified externally by its twin exhaust tailpipes besides its variant badge. Aside from that, the exterior is accentuated by front and rear aprons and side skirts.

benz c 300 1

It’s powered by the M272 3.0 litre V6 pot, which offers 231 hp at 6,000 rpm and 300 Nm at 2,500-5,000 rpm, mated to a 7G-tronic seven-speed tranny. Performance figures for the car include a 246 kph top speed, a 7.2 secs 0-100 kph sprint time and a claimed combined fuel consumption of 9.4-9.6 per 100 km.

Going the AMG route gets the car a lowered suspension featuring shorter springs and thicker stabiliser bars, and this translates into the C 300 sitting 15 mm lower than the C 200 CGI Elegance. You also get perforated front brake discs and sporty looking brake calipers to boot.

benz c 300 2

Besides the sports suspension, the car – which goes for RM320,888 – also gets 18-inch AMG alloy wheels with mixed size tyres, in this case 225/40 series fronts and 255/35 rears.

Other interior components of the AMG Sports Package include a three-spoke steering wheel with gearshift paddles, brushed stainless steel sports pedals with rubber studs as well as floor mats with AMG lettering.

benz c 300 3

MBM introduced the car in Sepang, towards the end of its latest intallment of its Mercedes-Benz Driving Experience program. The limited drive time involved intimated that it’s a tidy enough offering, and for sure it showed up the C 200 K’s that were also doing track duty to be anaemic in comparison, though you wouldn’t have to be a genius to figure that one out. Hopefully, a proper road test in the near future will show what the C 300 Avantgarde AMG is really made of.

VW Golf blue-e-motion to get 2014 market introduction

blue emo 1

Volkswagen has announced that it has set 2014 for the market introduction for its Golf blue-e-motion. The electric car is certainly going great guns as is in its current prototype form, having recently taken the overall winner title from the judges at the inaugural RAC Future Car Challenge. It also won in its category, Most Economic and Environment Friendly Regular Passenger EV.

The front-’engined,’ front-wheel drive concept features a lightweight 80 kg electric motor with a peak power output of 85kW (114 hp) and 270Nm of torque, driving an EQ210 single-speed transmission. The Golf blue-e-motion has a range of around 150 km under normal conditions, with a 135 kph top speed and 0-100 kph sprint time of 11.8 seconds being other figures.

blue emo 3

Juice is provided by 30 battery modules consisting of 180 lithium-ion cells (with an energy capacity of 26.5 kWh) installed in the floor of the boot (which reduces the cargo volume to 275 litres), under the rear bench seat and in the centre tunnel of the underbody between the front seats, with a separate air cooling system to ensure a constant thermal environment in the battery compartment. The vehicle’s charging plug connector sits behind the folding VW logo on the radiator grille. With the battery-weight of 315 kg factored in, the five-door blue-e-motion tips the scales just 205 kg more than a comparable Golf BlueMotion TDI with DSG.

The electric Golf offers individual choices in battery regeneration intensity – essentially, the driver has the option of pre-setting the braking energy recovery strategy over four stages (D to D3) via the automatic gearshift lever or gearshift paddles on the steering wheel.

blue emo 4

In the lowest stage (D), the car sails as soon as the driver’s foot leaves the electric pedal, with the Golf only being slowed by the rolling resistance of the tyres and air resistance. In the D3 stage, or B for braking, the maximum amount of kinetic energy is recovered and fed to the battery.

In addition, an active driving profile can be set, allowing the driver to prioritise between maximum range, maximum comfort and maximum dynamics. The selected profile then pre-configures the power of the electric motor, air conditioning control, maximum speed and battery regeneration strategy.

blue emo 2

Three profiles are available – Normal, Comfort+ and Range+. Comfort+ offers the full 85 kW (114 hp) of power, and in this mode the Golf blue-e-motion can get to the specified top speed of 135 kph. In normal mode, power is reduced to 65 kW (87 hp) and top speed is lowered to 115 kph, while Range+ mode the engine controller limits power to 50 kW (67 hp).
