Li Nian S1 is a rehashed last generation Honda City

Honda’s Chinese domestic market sub-brand Li Nian has just launched its first car – the Li Nian S1, a production version of the Li Nian Everus Concept car shown earlier this year at the Beijing auto show. As expected, the S1 ended up being a rehash of the previous generation Honda City, as we could already see the old City’s design cues on the Everus Concept.

Li Nian is a JV between Honda and their Chinese partner Guangqi Honda Automobile. The Li Nian brand was first announced in 2008, and there has been some very interesting concept cars shown at motorshows under the Li Nian name such as the Li Nian Concept and the Li Nian Roadster concept. It’s just too bad that the first production Li Nian ended up being a recycled last generation Honda.

Disguised 2011 Perodua Myvi spotted en route to Malacca

This taped up white Perodua Myvi was spotted by Farizul Jaafar on the way to Malacca just last month. At first glance you might think it’s just another regular Myvi but one driving around with a trade plate and some light taping compels you to take a second look and what we can see is what looks like a slightly different boot lid on the Myvi.

Earlier this year, Perodua’s new managing director Datuk Aminar Rashid Salleh told Utusan Malaysia that Malaysian motorists could expect a new Myvi somewhere in April 2011, with a new Myvi SE coming soon after in June 2011. He also revealed that Perodua would probably be offering a Myvi with a 1.5 litre engine capacity – the Myvi is currently only available as a 1.0 and a 1.3.

The Daihatsu Boon/Toyota Passo has already been updated in February this year and the JDM models’ design cues have taken a clear shift to a more feminine side of things, probably to suit the car’s target market in Japan.

In Malaysia, the Myvi is more of a unisex model, with many of the luckier fresh grads or even college students who are better off than those who have to get a Viva or a second hand car choosing to get a Perodua Myvi as their first car.

Perodua’s take on a second generation Myvi would most likely bring further design differentiation between the Myvi and its Japanese cousins than with the first generation model. Perodua’s version has to look unisex, and the SE has to usually look sportier and more aggressive.

Look after the jump to look at a gallery of the spyshot images as well as a full photo gallery of the new Boon/Passo that was launched in Japan earlier this year.

Valeo and BAIC develop new electric demo car

valeo

Less than a year after French automotive components developer Valeo and Beijing Automotive Industry Corporation announced a partnership with the intent to bring an electric vehicle to series production in 2011, the two companies have come up with an electric demo car, which has been presented to the Beijing Governor.

The vehicle features a complete powertrain developed by Valeo and its partners Leroy Somer and GKN, comprising an electric motor, an inverter, a transmission, a charger, a supervisor and a DC/DC converter. By using a synchronous permanent magnet motor with a large operating speed range, Valeo says its electric powertrain is able to deliver both good acceleration at low and medium speeds and a high top vehicle speed, though no specific details were announced about the system or its specs, nor are there any images of the vehicle.

Think introduces four-seater version of its City EV

think four

Think has introduced a four-seater variant of its City electric vehicle, and the ‘plus’ version is set to go on sale in Europe this month.

It’s pretty much the same lithium-ion battery-based EV the two-seater version is, offering the same performance – a maximum 110 kph top speed and a 160 kilometre range on a single charge, though the 2+2 seating configuration offers greater versatility, especially if you’ve got three to go. The rear seats stow away, giving largely the same load space as before, which is always good news too.

Air-conditioning now comes as standard kit for the City, which comes with a five-year or 100,000 km warranty on both car and battery. Five years. Sounds much better than three, don’t you think?

Hyundai’s new i40 (VF) wagon to debut in Geneva

hyundai i40 a

Hyundai’s new VF wagon, which will make its world premiere Geneva next March, is to be called the i40 in Europe. The Elantra-based estate will be followed by a sedan variant later in the year. The company says that the vehicle is aimed at further shifting consumers perception of Hyundai to a more aspirational position.

Designed at Hyundai’s European R&D facilities in Rüsselsheim, Germany, the new i40 is the company’s first D-segment model to be specifically developed for the European market, progressing the ‘fluidic sculpture’ design language by connecting the front, side and rear profiles of the rakish lines to present a bold, dynamic shape.

The estate will also become Hyundai’s most innovative model on sale on the continent, and will include the latest environmental technologies developed under the company’s Blue Drive eco-programme, as well as a powertrain line-up which boasts best-in-class performance and fuel economy and very low CO2 emissions. No other details have been announced, but that should all change as it gets closer to the vehicle’s debut in Geneva.

While few of us are lucky enough to get into an actual S2000 car to experience the thrill of taking tight corners with Scandinavian flicks, those of you who are game for virtual rallying can test your driving and navigation skills in The Rallye to Monte-Carlo, a new interactive game from Proton Motorsports.

A virtual rally spanning continents and cultures, the game challenges you to drive your favourite Proton cars and go up against your friends in a rally spanning over 20,000 kilometres from Malaysia to Monaco.

The Grand Prize? A chance to cheer on the Proton R3 Rally Team and experience the centenary of the Rallye Automobile Monte-Carlo with a friend, on 19-22 January 2011.

Your virtual journey is broken up into three stages and you progress through stages by completing Challenges that reward you with important things like fuel and special items like turbo boosts.

Currently, players have passed Stage 1 of the rally, which was from Kuala Lumpur to Chengdu, China.

After Chengdu, the route splits into two; you can travel up North through Kazakhstan, Russia and Eastern Europe or head South through Pakistan, Iran and Turkey, before assembling in Romania for the final push to Monte-Carlo.

So, get going; you can still catch up and take the lead if you start playing now!

New Nissan Sunny makes debut at Guangzhou auto show – global offering is set to enter 170 markets worldwide

Nissan Sunny 1

Here’s a name that should sound very familiar, except that it’s on a completely new face. Nissan has unveiled an all-new global sedan called the Sunny at the 8th China (Guangzhou) International Automobile Exhibition.

The Sunny name isn’t new to China – it was first introduced in 2003 on the first locally-built model from the new Dongfeng Nissan partnership, and the first Sunny quickly helped establish the Nissan brand in the passenger vehicle market there.

Nissan Sunny 2

This one is set to take things further afield – Nissan says the car will be a projected class leader in fuel economy, and is expected to appeal to young families in their 30s looking for a medium-sized sedan that combines a dynamic upscale design with the space, quality and features associated with the model and the brand.

It’s powered by the ubiquitous HR15DE 1.5 litre block, with dual injectors per cylinder and a partnering new-generation Xtronic CVT transmission being new to China. Other specs include front MacPherson struts and a torsion beam for the rear suspension.

Nissan Sunny 3

The car will be produced at the Dongfeng Nissan Huadu Plant in Guangzhou for the Chinese market, and the new Sunny will go on sale first in China in January 2011 before progressively making its way into 170 countries worldwide under different vehicle brand names.

A Volvo tyre promotion that wheel ensure a much safer drive

volvologoleftVolvo Car Malaysia has begun a unique tyre promotion that’s set to ensure Volvo owners wheel keep their rides rollin’ nicely during this holiday and festive season.

Yup, from now to February 14 next year, you only need to drive your Volvo to any authorised Volvo service centre to enjoy a free tyre inspection, free wheel alignment and balancing (with the purchase of at least four new tyres, that is) and up to 20% discount on “Tyre Off” items, in this case five major components, namely brake disc, brake pad, shock absorber, ball joint and tie rod end. The purchase of a pair of new tyres also gets you an attractive gift.

The year-end promotion, which VCM is offering exclusively with Continental tyres, is a gesture of goodwill to Volvo owners for the festive and holiday period, says VCM president Goran Larsson. “The Volvo tyre promotion is part of our on-going campaign to ensure that drivers have the safest journey possible during the holiday season,” Larsson said.

“As your car tyres play an integral role in keeping you safe, it’s only natural that we at Volvo keep an eye out for your tyres, as well as all other aspects of your car, to make sure you leave and arrive safely,” he added.

You can find out more details and information on the Volvo tyre promotion here.

Castrol EDGE Experience Nurburgring: Interesting facts about the Nurburgring!

Imagine doing more than 20,000 laps on a particular track – the very thought itself is quite staggering. Now, pile on those miles on a place like the Nurburgring, and it makes the achievement just downright astounding.

That number of laps is what Sabine Schmitz says she’s amassed on the legendary circuit, and the 41-year-old Queen of the Ring – who gained much attention as a BMW Ring Taxi driver shuttling passengers around the track – continues to do about 1,200 laps each year, which is really a lot of kilometres given the length of the circuit.

Schmitz’s impressive statistic is just part of the many interesting facts about the mythical Nordschleife, which has remained a one-way, public toll-road (a lap costs 22 Euros per car or motorbike) for the last eight decades since its opening in 1927, closed off only for testing purposes or racing events – the track has proven to be something of a favourite proving ground for many car manufacturers.

Effectively, during Touristenfahrten periods, the track is open to anyone with a road legal car or motorcycle, as well as buses and motor homes, with road laws in effect during this time. With the exception of speed limits in certain areas and overtaking on the right, the road is simply an invitation to drive – the lack of oncoming traffic and stops sets it apart from normal roads, and the absence of a fixed speed limit adds to its allure.

A little point about numbers: if you buy a ticket on a tourist day, you won’t be able to complete the full 20.8 km of the Nordschleife – rather, you do 200 metres less because you have to slow down and go through the area where the toll-gate is. Most timed runs start from the first bridge up to the gantry.

Statistically, many of the lap times have been taken with this shorter length. The fastest production car to lap the Ring is currently the Radical SR8 LM at 6 mins 48 secs, piloted by Michael Vergers last year, while the second fastest (6:55) also happens to be another Radical SR8, also driven by Vergers, in 2005.

Over the current full 20.8 km length though, the blistering 6:11.13 record set by the late Stefan Bellof in a Group C Porsche 956 during a qualifying session in May 1983 remains the best time ever achieved – it should prove unbeatable. And, as mentioned previously, Niki Lauda’s time of 6:58:6 in a Ferrari 312T set during qualifying for the German GP in 1975 remains the only time a car has dipped under seven minutes over what was then a longer 22.8 km course.

Famously called the Green Hell by Jackie Stewart in 1968, the Nordschleife is an unforgiving mistress – with plenty of blind-in and blind-out corners, few run-off areas and an abundance of solid objects skirting the track (namely the forest, which is where the Green bit comes from, presumably!), getting it wrong means meeting something once one goes off the tarmac. If one is lucky, this translates into nothing more than an expensive mess of metal, but with the speeds carried by many drivers, more inevitably occurs.

The Ring claims a number of fatalities each year – anywhere from three up to 12 people lose their lives attempting the track, with a high proportion being motorcyclists. In competition, the Ring has taken no less than 68 drivers, the last being earlier this year during the third round of the 2010 ADAC ACAS H&R Cup, when Leonhard Löwenstein died of smoke inhalation after his Aston Martin V8 Vantage overturned, hit a guardrail and caught fire at Bergwerk.

There are of course safer ways to go about the business – those looking for the thrill of speed can let someone do the driving, and the BMW Ring-Taxi should prove definitely more interesting than your usual ride to the airport. Since 1986, the service has carried more than 90,000 passengers, clocking up over 650,000 km and 300,000 laps. A lap or three with the likes of Schmitz or Claudia Hürtgen should easily prove to sexists that women can drive very well, and very fast. Now, taxi, anyone?
