CUSCO to sell Proton Satria Neo rally car in Japan

Pretty soon, MEM won’t be the only company around doing up Proton Satria Neos as rally cars as today Proton announced that Japanese auto parts company CUSCO will be buying standard road-going Satria Neo bodyshells to engineer and homologate according to FIA Group N regulation competition use.

CUSCO is famous for their aftermarket suspension systems and other parts such as LSDs and chasiss reinforcements and naturally they’ve also been involved in motorsports including rallying. Being a Japanese company naturally the rally cars that they’ve dabbled with so far are cars like the Impreza and the Lancer Evolution.

With the Satria Neo, CUSCO is essentially Proton’s customer – they buy the bodyshells, equip them with CUSCO-developed race components, and then sell the completed Group N rally-going Neos to customers who will compete in Junior Rally Championships in Japan and Asia Pacific. Way to go, Proton Motorsports! :)

Avitas Control-1 – perfect for the racer on a budget

Here’s something for the racer on a budget to chew on. Turkish composite specialist Avitas has taken the covers off its first complete car, the Control-1, at the Autosport International 2011 show in Birmingham.

Designed and built in-house, the Control-1 is the result of two years of development by the Istanbul-based company, which has been around since 1969 and specialises in producing automotive composite plastic products.

The Control-1 is built around a tubular chassis, and features carbon fibre panels and all-round double-wishbone suspension. It’s equipped with a four-cylinder 150 hp engine, mated to a five-speed sequential gearbox, and the rear-wheel drive vehicle weighs in at just 660 kg.

It’s intended to be inexpensive to buy and run, providing both competitors and championship organisers with an efficient way to go racing, or start a new series. Any takers then?

Ford Fiesta RS WRC car breaks cover in 2011-spec livery

The 2011-specification colour scheme which Ford’s Fiesta RS WRC car will wear for this year’s FIA World Rally Championship has been unveiled at the Autosport International 2011 show in Birmingham.

The official colours take over from the eye-catching blue and grey livery – designed by Ford of Europe’s design team – seen in the preview version of the car at the 2010 Paris Motor Show last September.

Team driver Mikko Hirvonen and Ford of Europe motorsport chief Gerard Quinn unveiled the new livery for the car, and Ford’s official WRC squad for 2011 also confirmed its new name and logo – it will compete as the Ford Abu Dhabi World Rally Team.

Title partner Abu Dhabi – which has been a team partner since 2007 – will have its distinctive branding featuring strongly in the new-look livery, and Emirati driver Khalid Al Qassimi will drive a third Fiesta RS WRC in support of team-mates Hirvonen and Jari-Matti Latvala. The team will also be sponsored by Castrol, another partner since 2005. Branding for its Castrol EDGE range of advanced synthetic oils will feature prominently in the car’s livery.

The full specification of the car – which is developed by Ford of Europe and technical partner M-Sport, and based on the Fiesta S2000 rally car – will be available at the beginning of February. The 1.6 litre turbocharged, four-wheel drive vehicle will make its championship debut in Rally Sweden, the opening round of the series, on February 10-13.

Swigz electric superbike makes sensational racing debut

The Swigz Racing all-electric superbike has made history in its global racing debut, powering to two podium spots in two races at the Auto Club Speedway in California last weekend.

Despite only six laps of pre-race testing from Saturday’s practice session and a cold and overcast day, the privately owned and developed machine managed to live up to its promise to match gasoline-powered bike lap times on Sunday.

Swigz Racing owner and bike rider Chip Yates achieved third place in the premier WERA Heavyweight Twins Superbike race, having started on the third row of the grid, and unbelievably went one better in the WERA Heavyweight Twins Superstock race to finish second and post the fastest lap of the race at a 1:39.792. The bike was recorded at 254 kph on the straight.

“This was an absolutely epic race weekend for our team; we had to overcome some technical difficulties on Saturday but we fixed everything and came back Sunday to score two podiums, a huge top speed, and post competitive gasoline bike lap times with no further technical issues to slow us down,” Yates said.

“We are a small and entirely self-funded team, and together with a small group of very loyal sponsors, are solely responsible for the development, patenting and building of this superbike. What a humbling experience for our small team to develop and build a machine that can beat gasoline bikes from the top manufacturers on their own terms – I was nearly brought to tears as I crossed the finish line both times!”

No more calling an electric bike a wuss, at least not this one.

AP holders will continue to receive aid after 2015

The Government will continue to aid Approved Permit (AP) holders after 2015, the year when issuance of APs will finally stop. The aid will be from a special fund filled by the RM10,000 fee charged for each AP issued.

The man who gave the assurance, Deputy Minister of International Trade and Industry Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir, said the aim was to help bumiputra entrepreneurs shift smoothly to other sectors.

“We charged RM10,000 for every AP issued to set up the fund and the money will be used to ensure a smooth and orderly shift of bumiputra entrepreneurs to other business sectors. By having the fund, we hope to execute the shift orderly and smoothly,” he told reporters.

On claims by the Association of Malay Importers and Traders of Motor Vehicles Malaysia (Pekema) that 70,000 people would lose their jobs if the AP policy was enforced by 2015, Mukhriz had this to say:

“They need to prove that statement because we have our own figures. We have been helping them for a long time, some about 30 years already. I think they will benefit greatly from this government policy. At this time, there are many more bumiputra companies that wished they have the APs enjoyed by the 98 companies (selected by the government).

“There are about 160 companies eligible to get APs but the government will stick to the 98 companies and will protect them until 2015,” he added.

Caterham-Lola SP/300.R: Sub 600 kg, 0-100 km/h in 2.5s

Described as an “exciting new chapter in its history”, Caterham – the British carmaker famous for the Seven – has unveiled the SP/300.R sports prototype racer at the Autosport International Show in Birmingham, UK. Created in partnership with British engineering brand, Lola Cars, the “aesthetically-sensitive” prototype will feature Caterham Motorsport’s new supercharged version of the Ford Duratec engine, expected to produce around 300 hp.

That’s enough to propel the sub-600 kg car from rest to 60 mph (0-96 km/h) in around 2.5 seconds. The gearing of the car has been selected to reach maximum rpm in top gear at the end of Spa-Francorchamps circuit’s Kemmel Straight, one of the more frequently-visited trackday venues. Top speed will be around 270 km/h.

Lola led the downforce development and aerodynamic styling using CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics). The basic chassis is an aluminium tub with a longitudinally mid-mounted engine, coupled to a stress-bearing rear transaxle. A forward splitter and large rear wing reduce lift, while a flat underbody maximises ground effect benefits. There’s also an F1-style raised nose section and sectioned panels, which will help reduce repair costs, ease maintenance and allow single-handed removal of body panels on track.

The SP/300.R gets full race suspension – front and rear dual wishbones with pushrod dampers plus adjustable ride height. The rear suspension architecture is derived from Lola’s Formula 3 cars. The tyres are bespoke items by Cooper Avon fitted to 13-inch race rims.

Only 25 SP/300.Rs will be manufactured each year. Caterham is planning a one-make series in which the SP/300.R will star, but details are yet to be finalised.

Third-generation Mercedes-Benz SLK roadster debuts

Mercedes-Benz has introduced its new R172 SLK, with three model variants of the third-generation roadster available at launch, all with a BlueEFFICIENCY suffix. Two are 1.8 litre four-cylinder versions, the SLK 200 BlueEFFICIENCY and SLK 250 BlueEFFICIENCY, offering 184 hp and 204 hp respectively – performance figures include a 0-100 kph sprint time of 7.0 sec for the SLK 200 and 6.6 secs for the SLK 250. The seven-speed 7-Gtronic Plus gearbox is standard fitment on the SLK 250, and an option on the SLK 200.

The immediate range is completed by the SLK 350 BlueEFFICIENCY – the V6 block, which features third-generation direct injection, piezo injectors and multi-spark ignition, pumps out 306 hp and manages a 0-100 kph sprint time of 5.6 secs. Mercedes says that despite the level of performance, the trio is up to 25% more economical than their predecessors.

Shape-wise, the front represents quite a bit of change from the previous generation R171 – the upright radiator grille, with its contoured fin, is certainly eye-catching, and together with the clearly defined headlamps (now equipped with LED technology) bring about a look that not only follows on the link with the SLS AMG and new CLS but is also a homage to the hallowed 190 SL of the past.

Other cues also offer a nod to the past – the ventilation grilles in the front wings, with a chromed fin, are reminiscent of the famous Mercedes-Benz roadsters of the 1950s. Not that it’s all just to do with style – the bonnet and wings are now made of aluminium to bring weight down and, despite the larger, more striking frontal area, the R172 SLK is aerodynamically slicker than its precedessor, with a Cd of 0.30 to the R171′s 0.32.

For the interior, there’s plenty of plush, from brushed aluminium trim bits in the base version to the high-gloss dark brown walnut or high-gloss black ash wood as things move up the scale. Other bits of kit include a multifunction sports steering wheel with a flattened bottom section and a thick leather crown as well as optional sun-reflecting leather.

There’s also Airguide, a new draught-stop system consisting of pivoting transparent plastic layers attached to the reverse of the roll-over bars – the driver or passenger can swing them to the centre of the vehicle in a flash to tame turbulent air flow.

It’s on this SLK that Mercedes is offering, for the first time, a choice of three variants of the lightweight-construction vario-roof. The base version is a roof painted in the vehicle colour, and alternatively there’s the option of a panoramic vario-roof with dark-tinted windows.

The third variant is a world premiere item – a panoramic vario-roof with Magic Sky Control, with the glass roof switching to light or dark as you wish at the press of a button. In its light state the roof is virtually transparent, offering an open-air experience without the air, and in its dark state the roof provides, well, welcome shade.

Three is also the number of suspension versions SLK buyers can choose from – a conventional steel suspension comes as standard, with the second being a sports suspension with harder springs and dampers. The third is a Dynamic Handling package, with an electronically controlled fully automatic damping system that includes a Direct-Steer system and Torque Vectoring Brakes as part of the parcel.

Since it’s a brand new SLK, Merc has decided to celebrate its arrival with an “Edition 1” special model, which comes in a special paint finish in glacier grey, and standard spec equipment for this one includes a panoramic vario-roof, the Dynamic Handling package, AMG bodystyling, two-tone designo nappa leather with contrasting top-stitching and Airscarf.

VW Group sold over 7 million vehicles in 2010, up 13.5%

2010 was a good year for the Volkswagen Group, which shifted more than seven million vehicles for the first time ever. In total, the Group delivered 7.14 million vehicles to customers, a 13.5% increase of 2009′s 6.29 million units. Since the global auto market grew only 11.3%, VW increased its share of the pie.

Deliveries in China grew 37.4% to 1.92 million units, a new record. India paled in comparison with just 53,300 units, but that’s still a 181% growth. The Group delivered 888,000 vehicles to South Americans (+8.9%) and 360,300 units in America (+20.9%). Western Europe (excluding Germany) recorded 1.85 million sales, which is +11.6% in a market that only grew 1.9% for the year. Russian sales were up by 39.5%.

The only market to show a decline is VW’s home market of Germany, where the Group delivered 1.04 million vehicles, down by 16.8%. Still, it wasn’t too bad since the market contracted by 23.4% due to scrapping premiums, so it’s a market share expansion.

Divided by marques, the Volkswagen brand also broke a new record last year with deliveries growing 13.9% to 4.5 million units. China (VW’s largest market), USA and Russia saw growths of 35.5%, 20.3% and 49.1% respectively.

Premium brand Audi broke its own personal records with 1.09 million vehicles sold in 2010, up by 15%. The four rings did well in America and China. Czech outpost Škoda delivered 762,600 (+11.5%) vehicles while Spanish brand SEAT did 339,500 (+0.8%) vehicles in 2010.
