Changan opens R&D centre in the US for chassis work

With an intent to learn, Chongqing Changan Automobile, China’s third largest domestic automaker, has opened a technical centre in the US to conduct chassis research and development for its brands in China, according to a news report.

The US$30 mil R&D centre, located in Detroit, will start off with 30 employees, though this number is expected to rise to around 200 over the next five years. The company has two other centres, a design one in Turin as well as a technical facility to develop powertrains, located in the UK.

Changan will work with US-based parts suppliers to develop suspension components, brakes, chassis and power steerings, and said it was the first step for the company to fix the weak link in its technology, which is with the chassis. The company stated that the centre is not meant to help the brand enter the US market.

While Changan has a three-way joint venture with Ford and Mazda, as well as a partnership with PSA Peugeot Citroen, it is also spending heavily to upgrade its vehicle technology. Late last year, it said it would be pumping in more than US$600 mil to conduct R&D for its own brands, as well as develop small engines and expand its minivan production.

LIVE from the Monte Carlo Rally – Proton R3 Rally Team kicks off IRC 2011 with improved car and new driver lineup

We’re reporting to you live from the Monte Carlo Rally, which is the opening leg of the 2011 Intercontinental Rally Challenge (IRC). Yours truly is shivering in the town of Valence, France at the moment, which will be “base camp” for the next few days. By the way, the Monte Carlo Rally doesn’t start in glamorous Monaco, but ends there – the first 9 stages will be held around Valence, the final 4 around Monaco.

We’re of course here to cheer on our own Proton R3 Rally Team, which will be up against the big boys from Peugeot, Ford and Skoda, last year’s IRC champion. Big name drivers include Juha Hanninen (last year’s IRC driver’s champ with Skoda), Guy Wilks (Peugeot UK, ex Proton driver) Freddy Loix, Francois Delecour, Toni Gardemeister, Stephane Sarrazin (Peugeot Le Mans driver) and Petter Solberg driving a 207. Subaru fans will know their ex-WRC champ.

There will be 120 vehicles contesting the historic Rallye Monte Carlo, which turns 100 years old this year. It’s Proton’s first time contesting the event.

Contest winners with Chris Atkinson and P-G Andersson

Piloting the two Satria Neo S2000 cars (which look really fetching in new 2011 livery) will be Chris Atkinson and Per-Gunnar Andersson. In case you’re wondering, this is a top lineup; Aussie Chris is a former Subaru WRC works driver who finished third here in 2008, while Swede P-G is a double JWRC champ with Suzuki.

The rally starts tomorrow, but we’ve briefly met with the team already in a “shakedown” session where winners of “The Rallye to Monte Carlo” contest Mohd Akram and Nik Mohd Azhar got memorable taxi rides by the drivers.

“We’re not too concerned about being the underdogs, instead, this plays in our favour as we devote our focus and attention to achieving the desired pace, performance and reliability in pursuit of results.

“While it is too early to place any expectations, we believe we have a race-winning car, two world class and very talented drivers and a competitive team to make a big enough impression in IRC,” said Datuk Abdul Razak Dawood, Head of Proton Motorsports.

Team Principal Chris Mellors also declined to put any targets, saying that while the team is definitely gunning for wins and the championship in the APRC, IRC is a tougher challenge and it’s hard to know until racing starts tomorrow. When asked about the contract negotiations with P-G, the Jeremy Clarkson lookalike boss said that it’s going well and we’re likely to see the Swede in yellow for the rest of the IRC season.

We’ll bring you updates from the rally starting tomorrow, where four stages will be held in the mountains around Valence. Stay tuned!

Lotus-Renault GP’s livery may run into trouble in Canada

If it looks like a pack of cigarettes, it must be a F1 car. Of course that’s quite a ludicrous proposition, even if we’ve all seen F1 cars smoking, but apparently a rather bizarre allusion along those lines is being bandied about with a certain choice of livery, in this case Lotus-Renault GP’s.

It has all to do with the choice of the black base scheme with gold outlines, or not so much with the colours themselves – well, can’t have a car in white and red then, can we? – but rather the fact that the livery, officially unveiled at the Autosport International Show in Birmingham last week, derives its inspiration from the John Player Special-Lotus colours worn in the glory days.

Such nostalgia has been alluded to, in a big way, so there’s no denying that it’s a case of resurrection and not just picking black and gold out from the colour palette coincidentally or because it looked, well, pretty.

It is this intimation that may cause problems for the team in June at the Canadian GP in Montreal. A news report from The Globe and Mail in Toronto says that the livery may run afoul of the strict anti-tobacco advertising laws in place in Canada.

The point is, if the car looks even remotely similar to a cigarette pack it’s quite likely to violate Canada’s ban on tobacco advertising, even if the colour scheme has no connection to the former sponsorship or the John Player Special brand owner (in this case, Imperial Tobacco), the paper reports.

A Health Canada spokesperson said that “tobacco inspectors would need to fully review to assess whether a violation of the Tobacco Act has occurred” should a car painted to resemble a cigarette pack attempt to do the race at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

The Act prohibits the promotion of tobacco products or tobacco product-related brand elements in Canada, except as authorised by the Act or regulations, and its definition of promotion is “a representation about a product or service by any means, whether directly or indirectly, including any communication of information about a product or service and its price and distribution, that is likely to influence and shape attitudes, beliefs and behaviours about the product or service.”

Such is the level of strictness that the black and gold colours of the John Player Special brand, which is sold in Canada, can’t even be displayed on Imperial Tobacco Canada’s website where it describes the brand. No pictures, no packaging, no brand colours, simple as that.

All this, naturally, arguably – or unarguably – means that the inspired-livery then could seriously fall short of getting through the gates if someone decides to get dictatorial about it. An alternative would be for Lotus-Renault GP to deploy an alternate colour scheme for Canada, but then FIA regulations stipulate that both team cars must be identical and sport the same livery for the entire season. Talk about getting a puff out of things.

Subaru’s concept version of the FT-86 set for Geneva debut

Subaru is set to give its version of the Toyota FT-86 coupe its world premiere in Geneva in March. It’s not officially named yet, so as of now it remains called the Subaru Rear-Wheel Drive Sports Car Technology Concept.

Official details haven’t been announced, but Subaru says the concept will feature the use of a horizontally-opposed boxer engine, and showcase the integration of its boxer engine expertise with rear-wheel drive in a vehicle it says will offer a new and highly enjoyable, Subaru-like driving experience.

Geneva will also see the European debuts of the Subaru Impreza Concept, which was unveiled last November in Los Angeles, as well as the Trezia, which it is hoping will appeal to the increasing demand for smaller and environmentally friendly cars in Europe. The compact smart wagon, as it has been tagged, will be available in 1.3 litre petrol and 1.4 litre turbodiesel forms in European markets.

Plans afoot to turbocharge the ailing Honda CR-Z?

According to a report, it seems Honda is in the midst of doing something bold to help resurrect its ailing CR-Z, which seems to be doing, to put it mildly, not too well in terms of domestic sales – the company, it seems, is planning to go the forced induction route with the coupe.

Autocar says that Japanese sources have intimated that the car is likely to be given a shot in the arm in the form of a 1.6 litre turbocharged pot, in two output forms, 160 hp and 200 hp. Right now, it’s only available as a hybrid, in a 1.5 litre petrol engine and 14 hp electric motor combination, which of course doesn’t sound very sexy, even if it’s doing its bit to save the planet.

Now, the vehicle you see above isn’t the claimed car, but is actually the TS-1X that made its debut at the recent Tokyo Auto Salon over the weekend. It’s a test study model based on the CR-Z, developed by Honda Access Corporation, a subsidiary specialising in genuine Honda aftermarket parts and accessories.

The front’s been reworked, with plenty of extensions elsewhere, and the car’s been slapped with a healthy dollop of matte black paint. Sure, it’s a test bed study, but mayhaps also provides some intimations of what is to be? You never know.

Supposedly, it’s speculated that the souped-up CR-Z might come about as a production-ready model by the time the Tokyo Motor Show arrives towards the end of this year. Oh well, if it saves the day, then it can’t be such a bad move. Strike one on the car’s first attempt, as well as against the go green brigade …

Tuned, tweaked Toyotas turning tricks at Tokyo Auto Salon – now, anyone fancy a sports version of the Prius and iQ?

It wasn’t just altered Lexus offerings to be found at the recently concluded Tokyo Auto Salon – the event also saw an interesting mix of tuned and tweaked Toyota vehicles. The posse, some more radical than others, was led by a pumped-up, track-ready interpretation of the iQ city car.

Forget cute and cuddly – the GRMN (Gazoo Racing tuned by MN) iQ Racing Concept is a beefed-up take of the tiniest Toyota; with a deep front air dam, huge lower air intake and racing wheels, as well as a tuned supercharged engine and a roll-cage, this iQ looks like it could definitely kick some, in a Mighty Mouse sort of way.

Gazoo, which you might know as the company that prepped Toyota’s LFAs for last year’s 24 Hours Nurburgring, offered a previous iQ concept in 2009 – the car was given a limited production run in Japan, and sold out immediately, so if you’re thinking what they’re thinking…

G Sports (G’s) contribution to the Toyota presentation was through its Sports Concept version of the Prius (well, yes, imagine! Wonder what the fuel economy is like), with Toyota’s in-house crew at TRD adding an Auris GT Concept, loaded with lots of aerodynamic kit bits, in the mix.

As well as the cars, Toyota did the interactive run in a big way at the show, including forums with engineers and racing drivers and virtual driving competitions in Metapolis, an on-line community created by Gazoo Racing.

Lexus at the Tokyo Auto Salon – plenty of plastic, surgery

For performance and custom dress-up automotive parts, there’s really nothing like the annual Tokyo Auto Salon. The latest edition of the event, which ran over the weekend on January 14-16, saw five tuned and modified cars from Lexus among the host of show displays.

Leading the pack were two new interpretations of the IS F – the CCS-R (Circuit Club Sport Racer) and Club Performance Accessory. The CCS-R takes the lightweight track saloon theme quite seriously, what with its carbon fibre body panels (including front and rear spoilers, bonnet and boot lid), new frameless construction roll cage and polycarbonate windows.

Inside, there’s further extensive use of carbon fibre for the dashboard, centre console and door trims, while the racing details extend to a six-point safety harness and short-diameter steering wheel with paddle shifts. Completing the entire play are a host of reworked bits – a racing suspension, brakes, cooling and exhaust systems, plus a mechanical limited-slip differential and forged alloys shod with slick tyres.

Then there’s the car in the second photo, the IS F Club Performance Accessory, as defined by the lads at Toyota Racing Department. With this one, TRD has slapped on spoilers fore and aft, a rear diffuser and a carbon fibre hood, and again, more carbon fibre material is to be found in the cabin, along with sports seats finished in bright orange. Sports suspension and brakes, a titanium exhaust, magnesium wheels and a mechanical LSD complete the package.

The third offering on the list was the CT 200h, revealed in special F-Sport guise, with an array of sporting accessories including alloy wheels, a body kit by Modellista and Recaro sports seats bumped in.

Elsewhere, Gazoo Racing presented its racing version of the Lexus LFA supercar, which enjoyed success at last year’s Nürburgring 24 Hours race, and TOM’s offered a new interpretation of the LS 460 limousine.
