Mercedes-Benz CLS 63 AMG – one more from Affalterbach

Mercedes-Benz has introduced the new CLS 63 AMG, and the C218 variant of the form takes off where the W219 left off, with more tricks in the bag, of course.

The four-door coupe gets two output variants of the form, centered around the workings of the M157 AMG 5.5 litre V8 biturbo engine, which features spray-guided direct petrol injection with piezo injectors, a full aluminium crankcase, four-valve technology with camshaft adjustment, air/water intercooling, generator management and a stop/start system among its tech leanings.

In its stock guise the pot puts out 525 hp at 5,250 rpm and 700 Nm at 1,750-5,000 rpm; with the AMG Performance package strapped on, output becomes 557 hp at 5,750 rpm and torque goes up to 800 Nm at 2,000-4,500 rpm. The major difference between both power units is the increase in the maximum charge-air pressure from 1.0 to 1.3 bar.

The drivetrain of choice is the AMG Speedshift MCT seven-speed sports transmission, replete with a compact wet start-up clutch in place of the torque converter and a stop/start function, which is permanently active in the transmission’s Controlled Efficiency (“C”) mode, switching the eight-cylinder engine off when the car comes to a stop. The “C” mode also gets a “soft” accelerator response set-up, with early gearshifts.

Going to “S” (Sport), “S+” (Sport plus) and “M” (Manual) modes brings about the engine management system partially suppressing the cylinders, interrupting ignition and injection under full load leads to even faster gearshifts. Also on call are an automatic double-declutching function and RACE START function.

Externally, the CLS 63 AMG bags a more distinctive bonnet, wider mudguards, a specific AMG front apron with black painted cross member and V8 BITURBO badging. Standard fitment includes LED High Performance headlamps. At the back, there’s a diffuser insert, an AMG spoiler lip on the boot lid and – as also featured on the SLS AMG – an integrated rear foglamp.

Elsewhere, there’s an AMG brake system, with the option of going with a ceramic high-performance composite braking system if you choose, as well as an AMG sports exhaust system with dual twin chrome tailpipes. Road contact comes courtesy of titanium grey-painted, high-sheen 19-inch AMG light-alloy wheels in a new triple-spoke design, wearing 255/35 front and 285/30 rear rubbers.

Further efforts in the name of performance sees the fitment of all-aluminium doors, around 24 kg lighter compared to the conventional steel ones, and additionally, the bonnet, front wings, boot lid, parcel shelf, various support sections as well as major parts of the chassis and engine are all made from aluminium too.

The car comes shod with a three-mode AMG Ride Control sports suspension, with steel suspension struts on the front axle and air suspension struts on the rear axle, as well as automatic level control and electronically controlled damping. There’s also a new front axle, with a 24mm wider track width, and a newly developed electromechanical AMG sports parameter steering offering a more direct ratio and variable power assistance that adapts according to the chosen suspension mode.

Inside, among the extensive range of standard appointments are AMG sports seats in nappa leather, a new three-spoke AMG Performance steering wheel with aluminium shift paddles and flattened top and bottom sections and an AMG Drive Unit with compact E-SELECT selector lever.

The AMG Performance package, besides ramping up the juice, also gets you a bag of other stuff – among these, carbon fibre AMG engine cover and spoiler lip on the boot lid, AMG Performance steering wheel with Alcantara inserts in the grip areas and red-painted brake calipers.

Further optional items available are an AMG Exterior Carbon package, trim elements in carbon fibre/black piano lacquer and yes, illuminated AMG door sill panels as well as a lightweight, forged 5-twin-spoke design light-alloy wheels and corresponding 255/35 front and 285/30 rear tyres. Indeed, you could have a seriously sordid season ticking off all the boxes with this one.

Chrysler 200 Convertible joins the line-up

Chrysler’s new 200 sedan was announced a few months back, and now the drop-top sibling has been unveiled – the 200 Convertible will take over the slot from the outgoing third-generation Sebring, which arrived in the market a year later than its sedan counterpart, in 2008.

Much of the 200 sedan is carried over to the convertible, which is available in two automatic roof forms – a body-coloured steel, retractable hard top or a cloth soft top, with operation controllable via the key fob button.

Among the novelties to be found in the interior is a media centre with voice command, SIRIUS Satellite Radio and a 30GB HDD/CD/DVD/MP3 radio with SIRIUS Travel Link, which provides real-time information.

Like the sedan, the convertible will be available in 2.4 litre four-cylinder World Gas Engine or 3.6 litre Pentastar V6 guise, with both options mated to a six-speed transmission. Chrysler says that attention has been paid to the ride and handling, and virtually every part of the suspension has been retuned or redesigned, including 22 of 28 suspension bushings.

The 200 Convertible will be available in three different configurations in its primary market, the US, these being the Touring, Limited and S models.

The Nurburgring – virtual reality tour with a BMW M3!

Lets face it, racing is expensive. It’s plain and simple. Despite various efforts to make motor racing a more affordable affair, you would need deep pockets even to take part in an official go-kart race. So what thousands if not millions of motor racing fans out there do to fulfill their racing hunger? Well, they play games or should I say, simulators (sounds better that way!).

Racing games are getting more and more realistic these days. Game makers understand that customers want the most realistic thing they can get. Race tracks are designed to be almost 100% accurate, same goes to the cars. Even driving dynamics can be similar, however this is one area which seems to be difficult to emulate 100%. Nevertheless, playing racing games such as Sony’s Gran Turismo series or Simbin’s GTR is the next best thing to the real thing.

As you would know, Castrol Malaysia is organizing the Castrol EDGE Experience contest which will entitle one lucky winner to actually drive the BMW M3 at the legendary and notorious Nurburgring race track, as part of an all-expense-paid trip to Germany. To help this potential winner get some sort of understanding of what he or she will be experiencing, we have come up with a video which showcases an M3 being driven around the “Green Hell” in a racing game, Simbin’s GTR to be exact.

I have been a racing game fan for a while now and I must admit that it is not easy to ‘master’ the Nurburgring. There are up to 100 corners and a trouble-free lap would take up to eight minutes, in an M3 that is. So you can imagine how easy it is to make mistakes. Furthermore, the track isn’t as wide as, for example Sepang. It could also use more run-off areas. The track also has abrupt elevation changes as well. At certain stretches, the car will actually go slightly airborne, even just for a millisecond at speeds of up to 200m/h. At times you will have start braking for the next corner the moment you land!

Lets move on to the actual flying lap. We of course started off at the start/finish line of the track, which is situated near the Grand Prix track. The M3 reached speeds of about 140km/h at the end of this short straight. We then went into a series of chicanes before spending some time on a straight which allowed the car to hit 215km/h. Just moments before braking for the next double right-handers, the M3 went airborne at 211km/h! This was followed by a straight which allowed the car to reach 260km/h.

More corners had to be negotiated, on a slight uphill and we even drove around a corner at 200km/h which is mind-blowing, before slowing down for a series of low-speed corners! These were taken at about 100km/h. It was then followed by a couple of downhill corners. Soon after, we were traveling at an average speed of 200km/h around some high-speed corners. This marked the half-way point of the circuit. Following a few low-speed corners, we arrived at a low-speed banking left hander.

Then there were medium-speed corners which was pretty interesting as the distance between each corner is quite short so there is a lot of steering movement in this section. You would have to be very quick and precise with your steering. After a few more medium and high-speed corners later, the engine was taken to extreme conditions. Super high-speed, high-rev cruise to be exact on a rather long straight. Imagine driving full throttle with a screaming 414hp V8 in top gear for up to 34 seconds! Brakes were fully used to drop speeds from 273km/h to about 160km/h in preparation for the next corner.

Then it was just a couple of low-speed corners which brought us back to the main straight. A lap time of 7 minutes 40.797 seconds was recorded. A quick check on the Internet revealed the time was a couple of seconds quicker than what a real life M3 would do on the track. However, driving in a game or a simulator doesn’t do justice, compared to driving in real life. Our potential winner will be extremely lucky indeed, may the best man or women win!

Nasser Al-Attiyah and Timo Gottschalk win 2011 Dakar Rally – Volkswagen Race Touareg 3 makes it three wins in a row

Volkswagen has won the 2011 Dakar Rally, making it the third successive win in the event for the brand, and Qatari driver Nasser Al-Attiyah has become the first Arab to win the race. VW entered four Race Touareg 3 teams in the 32nd running of the Dakar (there was no race in 2008), and was rewarded with a much celebrated one-two-three finish in the race through Argentina and Chile.

In his sixth outing in the event, Al-Attiyah, together with co-driver Timo Gottschalk, finished ahead of the other Race Touareg 3 driver/co-driver pairs of Giniel de Villiers/Dirk von Zitzewitz and Carlos Sainz/Lucas Cruz. Mark Miller/Ralph Pitchford completed the solid Volkswagen team performance with a sixth place finish.

As a result, VW is the only manufacturer to have won the automobile category in the desert classic with diesel technology – and remains unbeaten on the South American continent. It also continued the success story of enviable reliability – VW has not recorded a single technically related retirement in cross country rallying in four years.

The third-generation Race Touareg, equipped with a 2.5 litre five-cylinder TDI engine and permanent four-wheel drive, aced the event, shrugging off the boiling heat in Chile’s Atacama Desert and the extreme conditions in the notorious dunes in the Sierras Pampeanas around Fiambalá in Argentina.

Other numbers to celebrate – VW won 12 of a possible 13 stage victories in the 9,600 km long event, with Sainz bagging seven, Al-Attiyah four and de Villeiers one. Elsewhere, Carlos Sainz’s stage victory on the way to Buenos Aires made it stage win number 24 in the Dakar for the legendary Spaniard, surpassing the 23 stage victories scored in the car class by Frenchman Stéphane Peterhansel.

Lotus-Renault GP unveil livery, aims for victories in 2011

Lotus-Renault GP has unveiled the finalised livery for its 2011 car at the Autosport International Show in UK. While the revived iconic black and gold colour scheme (with some splashes of red to accommodate oil supplier Total) is final, it was shown on last season’s R30 – the R31 will be launched in Valencia on January 31, a day before official pre-season testing kicks off.

As all of us know, Group Lotus, which is fully owned by national carmaker Proton, has bought into the Renault team and is now a title sponsor of the Enstone outfit, much like what Vodafone and Petronas is to McLaren and Mercedes respectively. This is the start, and the sportscar maker plans to inch its way into having full control of the team eventually. It’s all part of the Dany Bahar led masterplan to take on the likes of Ferrari and Porsche, as demonstrated in Paris last year.

The livery was unwrapped by team driver Vitaly Petrov and Formula 1 legend Jean Alesi, present as brand ambassador for Lotus. “Everyone remembers the black and gold Lotuses from years ago and it’s nice they have been brought back. When you look around the show here and see those cars, then see this car, it does make you smile,” the Frenchman said.

Along with the new look is new ambition. “We want to win with this car. To win you need to be a regular podium finisher – and then you will win – and that is our target. My ambition has always been to establish this team as a top team. I want us to be recognised as a top team like Ferrari or McLaren,” team boss Eric Boullier told Autosport.

On his team’s new name, Boullier said: “To have Clive Chapman here is a good sign, I must say. Definitely we are representing Lotus Cars – and we don’t claim any heritage or anything. We are the F1 vision of Lotus. It is good to have a Chapman family member here. The strategy of Group Lotus was to licence the F1 entry. For reasons that they decided on their own, they decided to change their strategy and to stick with us. That is it. There is only one Lotus manufacturer in the world and they have asked us to represent them in F1. That is the end of the story.”

By the way, should the team win a race, the British anthem will be played, not the French anthem, as Renault will compete next season with a British racing license, now that they have Lotus onboard. By the way, Tony Fernandes’ Team Lotus (as it will be called from now) is using a Malaysian license, so Negaraku will be played should the team win a race, although that’s a highly unlikely scenario in the near future.

Sunswift IVy – the fastest solar-only car in the world!

This is the Sunswift IVy, and it just recently broke the Guiness world land speed record for solar-powered vehicles on January 7, beating GM’s Sunraycer to the top spot. GM’s Sunraycer previously clocked 78 kph back in 1988 using 1,500 watts of solar power, while the Sunswift IVy managed to hit 88 kph using just 1,050 watts.

The IVy is shaped like an airplane wing, which is basically the shape of a teardrop, which is the most efficient aerodynamic shape for minimizing drag. The IVy’s shape is designed for minimum lift and minimum drag. Hard to imagine, but it can fit one very small person.

Its footprint is about the same size of an average sedan but it’s only half the height and 10% of the weight of an average car. It’s powered solely by solar energy, and by calculations, the Sunswift IVy should technically have been able to achieve 115 kph at peak power (Sunswift says equivalent to what’s needed to toast two slices of bread) and an estimated average speed of 85 kph. However, during the test day, the clouds didn’t allow peak energy to be reached.

Its chassis is monocoque and made of carbon fibre, while the suspension uses a double wishbone at the front and a trailing arm at the rear. Steering is rack and pinion. It uses only three carbon fibre wheels, wrapped with Dunlop Solarma tyres. Solar power charges a lithium polymer battery weighing about 24.75 kg, which in turn powers a brushless CSIRO three-phase 1,800 watt 98% efficiency DC motor.

The whole program cost about US$280,000 and took 18 months to complete. Look after the jump for a couple more photos of the IVy.
