Takanobu Ito: Honda to revive NSX replacement plans

The Honda NSX deserves a successor, but plans for one were scrapped along with Honda’s Formula 1 involvement back in 2008. It was the power of the accountant, not dreams, that was stronger during that period, but since then the economy and car sales have rebounded, and many carmakers are even breaking records these days. So is it finally time for the NSX replacement?

According to a report by Asahi, Honda is revisiting plans to make one, and it was revealed by no other than company president Takanobu Ito at a motorsports function. The new model will be based on the HSV-010GT race car that is currently competing in Super GT. That racer was supposed to be the road going NSX before the detour, so it’s essentially a continuation of the project.

Ito said he wanted to commercialise the HSV because other automakers participate in the competition with racing versions based on cars sold on the market. “I think Honda should respect the history of the Super GT competition (as a stock-car race),” he said. Honda found a loophole in the regulations that allowed it to campaign a “production ready” model in the HSV-010.

There could be more good stuff besides the flagship, something more attainable. “There are two types of sports cars-affordable and high-performance. I hope we will be able to market both,” the boss was quoted as saying.

keep it up! bring back the image of Honda which is for performance! we dont want Honda to be boring like Toyota. Since the Civic Type R has discontinued, they only left with CRZ. HSV is a good car. should produce the road version of it.

Certainly, it’s about time. No point racing in the GT500 class without the road going products that could related with. GT racing should be more about advertizing the products, unlike F1 or LMP which are more about the brand. Hopefully the NSX replacement could be once again, be the car that could compete toe-to-toe with the bread & butter Porsche & Ferrari, as a RWD supercar (Nissan have done it with the GT-R ,but obviously it’s a 4WD). As a Japanese manufacturer effort, Lexus LF-A is obviously a big dissapointment. The succed, the new NSX must be better, price-wise & performance-wise with the Europeans.

The S2000 is also in dire need of a replacement – the affordable sportscar segment. Or perhaps new Prelude?

honda is so full of shit!..one day scrap..one day bring back. To date, currently, they are the worse and most boring japanese car manufacturer who has lost as to what their objectives are.

Good for Honda but talk is cheap…come up with the road going product first, then we see if it could replace the legendary NSX! Please Honda, let the NSX come out with force induction below 3.5 liter as it could be the selling point here in Malaysia and around the world. LFA is obviously NOT a Supra as the price is ridiculously high and the cc is way too much for the medium roots fan here to own. Further more, the NSX looks is way better than the LFA! Toyota…it’s your move with Supra…

My jaw still drops everytime I see the odd NSX zoom past. It’s one of those cars I hope I get to drive at least once in my lifetime.
