2011 Mitsubishi Triton 2.5 VG Turbo: 178 PS and 400 Nm!

Mitsubishi has launched the 2011 Triton and Pajero Sport in Thailand with a new VG Turbo engine. It’s essentially still the same 4D56 2.5-litre DI-D Hyper Common Rail diesel unit, but with variable geometry turbo to gain big on power and torque. In Thailand, the new engine is available in all Pajero Sport variants and two Triton models – Double Cab Plus GLS AT and Double Cab 4WD GLS-Limited AT and MT.

In its lower state of tune, the new VG Turbo engine makes 178 PS and 350 Nm of torque from 1,800 to 3,500 rpm, which is a big upgrade from the standard turbo unit’s 140 PS/321 Nm. The Malaysian market Triton makes 136 PS and 314 Nm while the most powerful truck sold here is the Nissan Navara with 174 PS and 403 Nm.

However, if one opts for the Triton 4WD with a manual gearbox, he will get 400 Nm of torque from 2,000-2,850 rpm (power remains at 178 PS). The 4WD auto version of both the Pajero Sport and Triton also get a 5-speed automatic transmission with Sportronic, an upgrade from the standard 4-speed auto.

The introduction of this high powered 2.5-litre engine marks the end of the range topping 3.2-litre lump, in line with Mitsubishi’s policy of increasing efficiency and reducing emissions. The Triton 3.2 makes just 160 PS and 343 Nm, so the new VG Turbo engine sees improvement in all areas.

Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia gets both the Triton and Pajero Sport from Thailand, so it’s possible that they may be coming our way in the not too distant future.

Great Wall assembles Hover and Wingle in the Philippines

Great Wall Motor has started assembling vehicles in the Philippines, making it the first Chinese automaker to do so. The assembly plant is a joint venture between Great Wall and its domestic vehicle distributor Statemotor Corp.

The plant has a capacity of 10,000 vehicles a year, and will roll out Great Wall’s Hover SUV and Wingle pickup truck. If its venture with Manila based Statemotor goes smoothly, Great Wall will also proceed to assemble its Voleex sedan in the ASEAN country, a company spokesman revealed. By the way, the Hover scored a surprising 4-star crash test rating in the Australasian NCAP.

In 2010, Great Wall’s total sales exceeded 390,000 units, including 50,000 overseas sales. This year, the Baoding based carmaker aims to up sales to 500,000 units, including 70,000 overseas sales. News reports state that Great Wall operates CKD plants in Indonesia, Vietnam and Malaysia as well, although we’ve yet to hear anything about that. We have however seen the Wingle undergoing testing in Malaysia.

Will the brand kick start operations in Malaysia this year and join counterparts Chery, Changan and Jinbei in the quest to seek acceptance from Malaysians? We’ve seen that low pricing can sway carbuyers – the Chery Eastar MPV found over 2,600 buyers in 2010 (more than the Toyota Rush and Fortuner) while the Era Jinbei is fast gaining popularity as an affordable passenger van. BAIC to launch its own sedan based on the old Saab 9-5

After showing off a previous gen Saab 9-5 with reworked looks last year, Beijing Automotive Industry Holding Co (BAIC) has announced that it will launch its first own-brand sedan before the end of this year. A prototype was completed in December last year and the car will go on sale either in late 2011 or early 2012.

Codenamed C70C, the upcoming sedan is based on the underpinnings of the old Saab 9-5 that Beijing Automotive purchased from GM in 2009. Then, Beijing Auto paid $200 million for the assets, which also included some technology from the current Saab 9-3. Not sure if the end product will look like the C71 concept, which had a Camry style nose stuck on the Saab’s angular body.

In China, Beijing Auto is the joint venture partner of Hyundai and Daimler AG. It also assembles Chryslers and makes SUVs and 4WDs based on old Toyota and Jeep designs. The company’s group sales totaled 1.4 million vehicles in 2010, making it the fifth largest automaker in China.

Williams F1 Team listed on Frankfurt stock exchange

Not a billionaire but want to own an F1 team? It’s now possible to own at least part of the Williams Formula 1 Team as they’re now listed on the Frankfurt stock exchange, the first F1 team to sell shares to the public.

Williams’ initial public offering comprised 2,409,383 existing shares at 25 euros each, valuing the placement at 60 million euros. The Grove based team’s stock declined 2.5% to 24.38 euros on its debut day.

The majority shareholder is still Sir Frank Williams, who has over 50%. Co-founder Patrick Head, who will leave the team after this season, has sold most of his 23.5% share. Austrian investor Toto Wolff, who bought in during 2009, also sold some of his shares after the sale was fully subscribed. Cyrte Investments BV, an investment fund of Aviva Plc’s Dutch Delta Lloyd unit, bought 5% of Williams after the listing.

“Our listing marks a new era in the history of the team. Williams’ future as an independent constructor is sustained by this listing, providing us the base from which to grow further. Williams offers a unique opportunity to investors, and the response to the offering is recognition of this,” Sir Frank said.

Williams CEO Adam Parr, who paid a visit to Frankfurt, described the IPO as unlocking the value of Williams’ brand and intellectual property.

The Castrol EDGE Experience Nurburgring – FINALS!

Our team are here up early at the Sepang International Circuit where we’ve been setting up the stage for the finals of The Castrol EDGE Experience Nurburgring challenge, where a total of 16 finalists will be battling it out in a test of skills in a bid to win the grand prize of a trip to the grail of all tracks – The Nurburgring, where they’ll be able to tackle its bends in a high performance 414 horsepower BMW M3.

They’ll be undergoing a series of exercises such as learning all about racing lines and then applying them into practice, a slalom course, learning how to avoid obstacles on a track, and so on. The exercises were designed both for judging purposes as well as for education/refresher purposes as they will have to be at the top to prepare for the ‘Ring.

FT licence plates likely to get an alphabet suffix

Been wondering what the next set of alphabets will be on a licence plate once the current three alphabet sequence runs out, like in the case of Federal Territory plates, which is already running well into WVA at the moment?

Well, seems that the next sequence isn’t likely to have the new letter tagged at the front (as in WAAA) when WYY finishes its run. In all probability, the letter will be strapped on after the number, like how Sabah and Langkawi does it.

According to a report, Transport Minister Datuk Kong Cho Ha said that the ministry is in the midst of choosing the next step from a number of proposals, but isn’t in a rush to implement the new system since it’ll be another few years before the current sequencing runs out. He added that the current proposal is looking to put the additional letter after the numbers, though no final decision had been made.

With the WV sequence followed by WW, WX and WY, which makes four more series to go. Each series has 9,999 numbers; with 23 letters used for licence plates – the letters I and O are not, and Z has been designated for military use only – this adds up to just under 230,000 vehicles covered per series, or close to 920,000 vehicles in all, before it runs out.

Wonder how it’ll shape up – will it be WA xxxx A, then WA xxxx B, and when the suffix eventually reaches Y, the next sequence rolls on to WB xxxx A?

Tata Pixel: Four seater Nano based concept for Europe

It’s based on the world’s cheapest car, but the Pixel concept Tata showed at Geneva looked anything but cheap. The Nano based city car concept looks like it could have been from any Japanese carmaker; in fact, it looks very familiar, just that we can’t point out exactly where we’ve seen this before!

Designed with Europe in mind, the Pixel, which is just over three metres in length, is claimed to be the most package efficient four-seater in the world. Tata says that it can comfortably accommodate four adults, which makes it more capacious than the 3+1 Toyota iQ. Tata says that those tall scissor doors allow effortless entry for all passengers in the tightest of spaces – I’m sure they didn’t have a shopping mall car park in mind!

A 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine sits in the rear of the Pixel. It’s said to be a low-friction design featuring variable coolant and oil pump and rapid warm-up systems. With a slippery shape, low rolling-resistance tyres and stop-start, the Pixel’s fuel economy is rated at 3.4 l/100km on the European combined cycle while CO2 emissions are just 89 g/km.

What’s unique here is the “Zero Turn toroidal traction-drive Infinitely Variable Transmission”. This efficient, cost-effective system assists rotation of the outer rear wheel forwards and the inner rear wheel backwards during low-speed manoeuvres, while the front wheels turn at acute angles. The result is a turning circle radius of just 2.6 metres.

Naza Kia launches the Forte Koup and Forte 6-Speed sedan

It’s pretty much shaping up to be bumper Kia model year, with no less than six model introductions for 2011. First up to arrive was the new Sorento SUV, and now Naza Kia Malaysia has officially unveiled the Forte Koup and the updated Forte 6-Speed sedan.

The two new offerings – which were introduced today at the new 12,000 sq ft Naza Kia 3S Centre in Glenmarie – will be joined later in the year by the new Optima sedan and the Sportage SUV. The sixth model wasn’t specifically mentioned, so bets are on whether it’s the Soul – a refreshed version is due out in mid-year – or the new Picanto, which was just introduced in Geneva.

For now though, the two Fortes hold court, with the Koup leading in things. Kia’s first-ever two door C-segment coupe – which Paul previewed two years ago – certainly has some very fluid lines and nicely balanced proportions, and the result is a car that’s easy on the eye. At RM115,800 on-the-road with insurance, it’s certainly excellent value if you’re eyeing a coupe that won’t break your wallet.

The front features the familiar family face, with black high-gloss accents in the form of the radiator grille, bumper moulding and fog lamp housing helping to snazz up things. At the back, there’s a two-tone bumper, as well as rear LED combination lamps and twin exhaust tailpipes. A point to note is that the fully-imported Koup comes wearing a Kia badge outright, as it rightly should.

It’s powered by a Theta II 2.0 litre four-cylinder CVVT block, with 156 PS at 6,200 rpm and 194 Nm at 4,300 rpm, mated to a six-speed auto transmission. Among the performance specs is a 0-100 kph sprint time of 10.5 secs.

The vehicle, which sits on the same platform as the sedan, features a front McPherson strut and a coupled torsion beam axle rear suspension, though some tweaking on things has been done to offer improved response and stability compared to the sedan. It has a wider wheel track and sits 10mm lower than the sedan, and a larger diameter stabiliser bar, shock absorbers with retuned inner valves and a revised steering-gear ratio help things along here.

Features and equipment include bucket type leather seats, alloy pedals, automatic air-conditioning, an out-sliding powered sunroof, 60:40 split folding rear seats, cruise control and a six-CD changer, six speaker audio system that has a rather unique feature – the outer frame of the speaker grilles are lit by LEDS, which you can enable at the touch of a button. Speaking of frames, there are none for the door windows.

What else? Well, there are the paddle shifters, electric folding side view mirrors, USB and iPod connections, Bluetooth connectability, engine start/stop button and the usual Supervision cluster, in keeping with the Forte kit theme. Oh, and the car sits on 215/45 series tyres wrapped around a black/silver high-gloss 17-inch wheel.

Five external and two interior colour themes are available for the Koup, and these are Racing Red, Clear White, Ebony Black, which come with a two-tone red and black interior, as well as Sweet Orange and Santorini Blue, which come with a single-tone black interior.

Meanwhile, the Forte 6-Speed sedan jumps in looking to continue on the success of the earlier one, which was launched in November 2009. The enhanced Forte 6-Speed comes, as its name suggests, with a six-speed auto box with Shiftronic functionality as well as steering mounted paddle shifters, replacing the four-speeder of old.

Other new features include LED turn signals on the side mirrors, which are now electronically foldable, a new stylish grille design, a rear view camera and mobile phone Bluetooth functionality, operable through the steering controls.

There’s also mention about improvements in the NVH levels, through the addition of sound-deadening material, foam-pads and thinsulators in some areas (A/B/C pillar trim, firewall, trunk mat and cowl-top cover, among others)

The old four-speed shifter, and the one on the new six-speeder.

The six-speed transmission, integrated LED turn signals, new grille design are available on all three models, the 1.6 EX and SX as well as the 2.0 SX. As for the steering-mounted paddle shifters, rear view camera, electronically foldable mirrors and Bluetooth functionality, those are only be available in the 1.6 SX and 2.0 SX variants.

The 1.6 EX does get 16-inch alloys (with 205/55 profile rubbers), replacing the steel 15-inchers found on the previous incarnation. The SX models continue on with the same 17-inch, 215/45 wheel/tyre configuration.

Previous side mirror, and the new LED-equipped one.

Six colour choices are available, these being Clear White, Bright Silver, Titanium Silver, Metal Bronze, Spicy Red and Ebony Black. No changes to the interior trim, by the looks of it.

As for pricing, there’s an increase, but nothing radical given that you finally get a six-shooter – the OTR with insurance price of the 1.6 EX is RM78,800, while the 1.6 SX and 2.0 SX go for RM85,800 and 97,800 respectively.

Naza Kia Malaysia is targeting to sell between 800 and 900 units of the new Forte 6-Speed a month, and as for the Forte Koup, the company is hoping to move 30 units of the two-door vehicle per month.

Lotus Evora Enduro GT Concept in Lotus-Renault colours

Besides the stripped out Elise Club Racer, Lotus also unveiled the Evora Enduro GT concept car in Geneva. The Evora Enduro is, as its name suggests, designed for endurance racing, and is based on the Evora GT4 Endurance race car. It was shown in black and gold with splashes of red, just like the Lotus-Renault F1 car, which was also present at the Lotus stand.

Developed by Lotus Motorsport under the watch of Lead Designer Nicola Scimeca, the Enduro will be the base point from which the GT2/GTE homologated cars for FIA and ACO endurance racing will be built. This year, Lotus Motorsport plans to compete in the Nürburgring ADAC 24 Hours (23-26 June), Spa 24 Hours (28-31 July) and the Silverstone 24 Hours in October. 24 hour races in Dubai and Daytona are on the list for 2012.

Lotus did not reveal any specs, but the Evora Cup GT4 car is powered by a Toyota 4.0-litre normally aspirated V6 with 360 PS and 445 Nm paired to a six-speed sequential gearbox driving the rear wheels. Unladen weight is 1,190 kg.

The Evora Enduro can be bought by private individuals and adapted for racing. Gallery after the jump.

SsangYong SUT 1 Concept – Actyon Sports gets new face

Anyone remember the SsangYong Actyon Sports? I do, mainly because of its strange looks in a very traditional truck segment, and its 2.0-litre diesel engine with the figures of a 2.5. That same strange looking truck has made an appearance in Geneva, but it looks less oddball now with an all new face.

This is the SUT 1 Concept by SsangYong, named so because it was designed to be the world’s best pick-up truck (SUT stands for Sports Utility Truck). Don’t throw stones at us, that’s what they said!

We can see that SsangYong has ditched the Actyon’s bulging forehead and triangle lamps for a sleeker, contemporary grille with long swept back headlamps. They’ve even thrown in some trendy LED strips. Actually, this move to look more conventional isn’t new – the SsangYong Korando SUV that was released late last year could have been from any carmaker, not something that can be said of past models.

That prominent rising signature line is still there, but it no longer makes a downward sweep at the end of the road. The profile makes for a very high tailgate, and that’s unchanged, although the elements have been reshaped.

The FR 2.0-litre Active Diesel engine (Euro 5 compliant) makes 155 PS and 360 Nm of torque from 1,500-2,800 rpm (190 Nm available at 1,000 rpm), which not only betters the Actyon Sports’ 141 PS/310 Nm, but beats all 2.5-litre trucks in Malaysia bar the Navara. The engine is mated to six-speed transmissions – auto and manual.

The SUT 1 has plenty of equipment, including powered and heated leather seats, auto air con, sunroof, ESP, 18-inch wheels, cruise control, Bluetooth and an electro chromatic rear view mirror. Production will start in the second half of this year and market introduction is set for early 2012.
