Team Lotus refutes David Hunt’s allegations, claims Hunt is the one who refused to accept the original deal

Yes, the High Court trial between Group Lotus and Team Lotus may have begun, but it’s the stuff outside that’s making all the news, with claims and allegations bringing about counter claims.

The current outdoor blaze started when David Hunt claimed that Tony Fernandes had gone back on an agreement regarding payment for the brand, as reported in The Telegraph.

The relationship has deteriorated significantly, it would seem – the paper also said that Tony has allegedly instructed his lawyers to sue Hunt for defamation in the past week, although Hunt claimed he did not know on what grounds.

Hunt had told the paper that “he [Fernandes] apparently ‘changed his mind’ at the 11th hour, by his own admission, now that I’ve done so much work on his company’s behalf, and he’s trying to renegotiate by offering new terms which are, frankly, ludicrous.”

Now, however, according to another report, again by The Telegraph, Team Lotus have responded by claiming that it is Hunt who has refused to accept the original deal agreed between the two parties and is now seeking to extract more money out of them (Team Lotus).

“Team Lotus has an agreement with David Hunt which was signed by both parties. David Hunt has tried to renegotiate that agreement, which Team Lotus is not prepared to do,” said a team spokesperson.

So, how does all this affect the trial, if it does? Looks like we’ll just have to see what else comes along, but one thing’s for sure – this one just gets more sordid as the days roll on.

Honda Civic images surface before China launch in April

The new 2012 Civic is set to be introduced by Dongfeng Honda at Auto Shanghai late next month, but shots of the car – presumably taken in-house – have inevitably surfaced, as is usually the case. The leaked photos of the Chinese version of the car reveal minor differences compared to the US version, noticeably at the rear, with the tail lamps extending on to the trunk lid, a similar trick Honda used to differentiate the US and ASEAN Accord.

Based on the shots, there’s plenty more chrome finishing on the Chinese version – the door handles, front grille and fog lamp cover get the shiny bit treatment. The word on the grapevine is that the car will be available in China in 1.8 and 2.0 form, and presumably the Type S badging on the car in the pix makes it the 2.0.

Chevrolet Colorado show truck breaks cover

The wraps have come off the Chevrolet Colorado show truck, ahead of its global debut at the Bangkok International Auto Show. The concept previews the next-generation Colorado midsize pickup truck, which will go on sale in Thailand later this year.

The show truck features an extended-cab body atop a high-stance AWD chassis and rides on large, 20-inch wheels and off-road tires. Power comes from an efficient 2.8 litre turbodiesel engine, which produces a broad torque band for excellent cargo and towing capability.

The Colorado’s design conveys strength through bodywork that appears tightly wrapped over the chassis and a wide, confident stance. In the front, you get the familiar gold bowtie, and the dual-port grille is framed by large headlamps that flow into the front fenders, with an extractor vent on the hood bulking things further.

It’s finished in a shade called Pepperdust Metallic, and this is accented with polished aluminum details in the fascias as well as integrated side steps and black-masked projector-style headlamps with LED lighting elements. At the rear is a full-width LED-lit taillamp, and there’s also a body-colour hard tonneau cover on the bed.

The 20-inch aluminium wheels feature a “liquid metal” finish, with Stone Gray color wheel ports, and are wrapped with Cooper 285/50R ZEON LTZ tyres.

Inside, the cabin features a dual-cockpit instrument panel design, which flows into the doors, and ice-blue lighting and high-quality, “double-faced” leather-trimmed seats add more dash. Elsewhere, a brace of motorcycle-inspired, three-dimensional gauges stand out on the instrument panel.

Contrasting dark wood trim, accented with chrome and low-gloss and soft-touch materials, is used throughout for a premium feel. A number of storage compartments are located throughout the interior, including a covered center bin for concealment of valuable items and a large, dual glovebox.

Additional features include a dual-zone, digital climate control system and an infotainment system, with an ergonomically positioned 7-inch LCD display in the centre stack at the heart of things.

MINI Countryman test drive report from Hamburg, Germany

The new MINI, or the BMW MINI, is one of the great motoring successes in recent times. We’re not sure, but it’s possible than even the bigwigs in Munich never envisioned such great reception for the reborn icon. Whether as a style accessory that transcends class in Europe or a toy for the rich in Malaysia, the MINI is still every bit as desirable as it was when it debut nearly a decade ago (has it really been that long?)

Fun to look at and fun to drive it may be, but the hip and happening early adopters from a few years ago might have moved on in life, and may require more space. To keep them in the brand they love, and to attract those who love the idea of a MINI but whose lifestyle/family does not permit, a bigger MINI was needed.

BAC Mono – a single-seater for enthusiasts, by enthusiasts

Ah, here’s what happens when enthusiasts get beyond being merely enthusiastic in armchair fashion and do something about it. It’s called the Mono, and it’s the creation of BAC, a company started out by a couple of Brit lads.

The Mono (as in monoposto, or single seat) has been designed to bring formula race car levels of handling, performance and thrill to the public road, but it’s also the perfect trackday tool, racing school car and one-make series racer.

Conceived by brothers Neill and Ian Briggs, the Briggs Automotive Company creation offers superlative performance – at 520 hp to the ton, its power-to-weight ratio surpasses that of the Bugatti Veyron and it gets from nought to 100 kph in just 2.8 seconds, to 160 kph in 6.7 seconds and on to a top speed of 273 kph.

The car is an object of engineering perfection and desire, courtesy of the Briggs brothers’ 15 years experience of the motor industry, during which time they’ve handled design and engineering consultancy projects for the likes of Ford Motor Company, Mercedes-Benz and Porsche, through their company Adaptive Space. Ian Briggs says that the Mono is the culmination of a 12-year dream for the brothers, the car they wanted to own but nobody else made.

The Mono’s aerodynamics were optimised using CFD in partnership with Stuttgart University, and is constructed in carbon fibre with a tubular steel driver safety cell, complete with FIA-compliant rollover protection system – similar in concept to a DTM race car.

Power comes from a 280 hp normally-aspirated 2.3 litre Cosworth unit mounted longitudinally and mated to an electronically-controlled, paddle-shift, six-speed sequential Hewland transmission with a limited-slip differential.

The vehicle features a rose-jointed, aero-profiled pushrod suspension with adjustable Sachs Racing dampers. Elsewhere, there’s an AP Racing braking system, bespoke HRT alloy wheels by OZ Racing, purpose-developed, street-legal track tyres by Kumho and vehicle electronics and instrumentation by GEMS.

The driver is secured by a full six-point racing harness by Willans, with a secure locker in which to store a helmet and the detachable steering wheel when parked. The seat is fixed for safety and optimum weight distribution (48/52 front to rear), and drivers of varying shapes and sizes can be readily accommodated thanks to a fully adjustable pedal box and steering column alterable for both height and rake. There’s even a F1-style fully-profiled seat option.

The Mono – which goes for £79,950 – is built to order on a first-come, first-served basis, and production capacity is currently between 50 and 100 vehicles per year.

BMW to expand TwinPower Turbo to 4- and 3-cyl engines

Expect more to come in the way of twin-scroll turbocharging from BMW – the company is set to expand its application of TwinPower Turbo tech to cover its four- and three-cylinder engine jobs.

First seen in 2009 in a six-cylinder 3.0 litre petrol unit on the 5-Series GT, the package – which has twin-scroll turbocharging, direct gasoline injection and fully-variable Valvetronic valve management as part of the game – made its way on to a four-cylinder unit, the 2.0 litre petrol block in the X1 xDrive28i introduced in Geneva.

It’s all part of the plan by the company to offer more horsepower while cutting back on CO2 levels. The 245 hp output from the 2.0 block is significantly higher than the 156 hp offered by the normally-aspirated version.

According to a report, the company hasn’t disclosed just when TwinPower Turbo will be made available on a new family of three-cylinder engines it’s looking at to power the next-generation Mini and upcoming entry models in its BMW model lineup. It has however stated that the three-cylinder unit is expected to be the dominant engine plug in its lineup by 2015.

Infiniti arrives in ASEAN – first stop, Indonesia

Nissan has made Indonesia the first market in Asean to introduce the Infiniti brand, with the opening of a dedicated showroom in Jakarta and the launching of three models into the market last week. Four variants are currently being sold in the country – the FX50 and FX37 crossovers, the M37 sedan and the G37 coupe.

According to a report in The Jakarta Post, the Indonesian operation aims to sell 200 cars in 2011, and in the process obtain a 5% market share of the premium segment, which was worth 5,327 units in 2010 (out of a total industry volume of 745,000 last year). It’s all going well, by the looks of it – the company has thus far sold between 40-50 examples of the three models since its arrival.

Indonesia is the first of 25 markets where the brand will be launched globally until next year, all part of the brand’s plan to expand its global presence. The report adds that the company is studying plans to introduce the Infiniti Performance Line in Indonesia, though there are no plans to launch diesel variants into the market.

Lotus vs Lotus court battle starts today, Tony Fernandes’ dispute with David Hunt over payment surfaces

The most ‘entertaining’ side show of the off season, the naming battle between Group Lotus and Team Lotus, will finally go to the British High Court today to be settled once and for all. However, all’s not well in the green and yellow corner as Tony Fernandes’ bitter dispute with David Hunt has come to surface. This is major, since Hunt is a main character in this soap opera.

This comes as a surprise as we’ve all been led to think that Hunt – brother of ex world champ James and the man who sold Tony the rights to use Team Lotus – is a firm supporter of Tony’s cause. The reason of the conflict? Money, of course!

As reported in UK’s Telegraph, the dispute centres around Hunt’s claims that Fernandes has gone back on an agreement they struck in January over payment for the Team Lotus name.

Tit for tat, Hunt is now refusing to back Team Lotus in court, despite having agreed to do so in January. He’s now claiming that there are “potentially some serious holes” in TL’s case. The paper also said that Tony has allegedly instructed his lawyers to sue Hunt for defamation in the past week.

“When we had to make the Team Lotus staff redundant in 1995 I made a promise to them and the fans to return it to F1 in the hands of a worthy custodian, and initially I had high hopes that Tony, Din and Nasa were going to tick the boxes,” David Hunt told Telegraph Sport.

“What angers me is that I have, in good faith, worked extremely hard on the build-up to the hearing because I believed Tony would honour our January agreement. He’s apparently ‘changed his mind’ at the 11th hour, by his own admission, now that I’ve done so much work on his company’s behalf, and he’s trying to renegotiate by offering new terms which are, frankly, ludicrous.

“All I’m looking for is for Tony to stick to his word and honour our agreement. If he doesn’t, then regrettably I don’t see why I should continue to provide assistance and this trial won’t be the last battle he’s facing, even if he wins,” the man added.

SPOTTED: New Nissan March with manual transmission, but it doesn’t belong to Tan Chong!

How apt for this to have happened in the month of March – this Nissan March in the hero orange colour was spotted by reader Kai Lit in Kota Damansara this afternoon.

A peek into the interior reveals that this particular car has a 5-speed manual transmission, which if Tan Chong decides to bring into Malaysia will be the most affordable offering. The question is, how affordable will affordable be? In Thailand, the price range is from 375,000 baht (RM38k) to 537,000 baht (RM54k).

As the March is built in Thailand, it will probably already be acclimatized to this region’s weather. We also think the March will more likely be a CBU import from Thailand instead of assembled in Tan Chong’s plants.

This PURE DRIVE badge on the rear made its debut on this model, which for Nissan signifies cars that focus on eco-friendliness and efficiency. The March is also classified as a Thai Eco Car, which means it achieves at least 20 km/l and emit less than 120g/km of CO2. Engine capacity must not exceed 1.3 litres if petrol-powered and 1.4 litres for diesels.

If a car is a Thai Eco Car, the manufacturer is rewarded by the Thai government with a 50% cut in excise duty, no income tax for eight years and no import duty for factory machinery imports.

UPDATE: Sharp-eyed reader Kent pointed out that the number plate on this car has been previously spotted on a Japanese Domestic Market Toyota Passo Sette. Follow the link to see which car we’re talking about – we know that’s a Passo Sette and not an Alza because it’s a JDM car with black tinted rear windows. In addition, the CKD Nissan Teana which had been undergoing testing prior to launch featured trade plates that began with the letter W (Wilayah), instead of B (Selangor).

Just like how some of us suspected that that Toyota Passo Sette was not being tested by Perodua but instead could be a benchmark exercise by Proton, we suspect this Nissan March might just be owned by Proton. This Nissan March and the JDM Toyota Passo Sette’s number plate is B2368A, and we’ve seen B2367A in the past on a Proton Waja CPS being tested.

This makes sense – after all, Proton is officially in talks with Nissan on a technical collaboration, as revealed by a signed MoU recently. There was word in the past that Proton was interested in using Nissan’s V platform, which so happens to underpin this Nissan March, to engineer the Proton EMAS.

Look after the jump for the rest of the spyshots as well as image galleries of the Nissan March, or Micra as it is called in some markets.
