Lewis Hamilton takes top spot at final practice in Sepang

Lewis Hamilton was the quickest driver at the end of today’s final free practice at the Sepang International Circuit, ahead of the qualifying session which will flag off at 4.00pm. The 2008 World Champion was about 0.3 seconds quicker than Mark Webber who finished the session in second. The Australian was fastest through out both sessions yesterday. Third fastest was Hamilton’s team mate, fellow World Champion Jenson Button.

Lotus Renault bounced back and was fifth with Nick Heidfeld’s lap time. Behind him was Fernando Alonso from Ferrari, a team which is having trouble breaching into the top three thus far in the weekend. Vitaly Petrov in the other Lotus Renault was seventh, followed by Felipe Massa and Kamui Kobayashi from Sauber. Michael Schumacher made tenth place in his Mercedes GP Petronas machine. Team mate Nico Rosberg was 11th.

Further down the grid, both Team Lotus drivers were 19th and 20th respectively with Heikki Kovalainen leading the way. They were quicker than the Virgin duo. Final two positions were taken up by the Hispania drivers, who could face difficulties qualifying within 107%, as seen in Melbourne a fortnight ago. The session was pretty much incident-free apart from spins by Force India’s Paul di Resta at Turns 14 and 15. It was completely dry but showers are highly expected for qualifying.
