Jazeman Jaafar accomplishes two podium finishes in Monza

It was a good day out for Jazeman Jaafar at the opening round of the 2011 Cooper Tires British F3 International Series at Monza, Italy – the Malaysian managed to get to the podium twice, finishing second and third in two of the three races of the round. The result over the weekend puts him in second place overall in the Drivers Championship.

The Petronas-backed 18-year old finished behind Felipe Nasr in the race one, and was placed fifth in the second race before finishing third in the final race. “It’s been an excellent start to the season for me,” Jazeman said. “We had a very strong weekend, and were solid right from the start. Carlin did a great job with the set up work.”

“Of course I want to win and we’re knocking on the door of the top step, but consistent strong points finishes are key, so I have to be patient and I didn’t want to take too many risks and jeopardise this, in only the first event. I had to fight hard, so it was tough out there, but I reaped the rewards,” he added.

The second round of the Cooper Tires British F3 International Series takes place at Oulton Park circuit in the UK next weekend.

Strange but true! Nissan LEAF NISMO RC electric racer

Here’s another unlikely racer – the Nissan LEAF electric car. No, the “RC” in the name doesn’t make this a toy, but it stands for “Racing Competition”. This NISMO fettled EV racer is set to debut at the 2011 New York International Auto Show. It will likely make special demo appearances at various motorsports venues in 2011, as Nissan explores a pioneer zero emission competition spec series in future years.

This LEAF is unlike any other, starting with its full carbon fiber monocoque bodywork. The three-piece bodywork includes removable front and rear sections, fixed windows, LED headlights and taillights and driver-adjustable rear wing. There are two doors less than the road version, too.

Dimensionally, the race car features a 9.9 cm shorter wheelbase, is 2 cm longer and 17 cm wider. It also sits more than a foot lower than the production LEAF and ground clearance is limited to 6.1 cm, compared to 16 cm for the road car. And at just 938 kg, the race car weighs about 40% less.

Inside, you won’t find rear seats, a trunk, audio system, navigation and carpeting, but a battery pack, electric motor and inverter located in a mid-ship position. Like the production LEAF, the NISMO RC is powered by a lithium-ion battery composed of 48 compact modules and a high-response 80kW AC synchronous motor that generates 107 hp and 280 Nm.

It can be charged up to 80% of full capacity in 30 minutes using the quick charging port located inside the rear cowl. Unlike other race cars, the NISMO RC has no tailpipe, no emissions and no sound.

The motor drives the rear wheels. The RC has all round double-wishbone suspension and driver-adjustable brake balance. It rides on 18-inch 6-spoke wheels and P225/40R18 Bridgestone racing rubber. In testing, it made the 0-100 km/h sprint in 6.85 seconds and a top speed of 150 km/h. Nissan says that it can run for 20 minutes under racing conditions.

SEAT to expand into China – Leon and Ibiza set for 2012

Another brand joins the fray in that very important automotive market known as China. Spanish brand SEAT announces its impending arrival there with its participation at the Shanghai Motor Show, which begins later this week.

The aim, of course, is to establish the SEAT brand among potential customers before sales begin with the export of Spanish-assembled Leon and Ibiza models to the country in 2012.

The brand says it has identified a large demand for distinctive European cars among Chinese consumers, and believes that the timing is right to expand into that key market.

The company says its research shows that Chinese car buyers are a very design-conscious lot, valuing performance and dynamism as well as technology and state-of-the-art engineering, according to SEAT’s president James Muir. Doesn’t sound very different than in most places, does it now?

Chinese GP: Team Lotus says they’ve joined the midfield

Did you enjoy yesterday’s Chinese GP? There was plenty of action in Shanghai and a some breakthroughs as well. For one, the season saw its first winner other than Sebastian Vettel in Lewis Hamilton. Another is Team Lotus joining the midfield, as declared by the team itself. Kovalainen’s T128 finished 16th, ahead of Sergio Perez (Sauber) and Pastor Maldonado (Williams), although the Sauber was competing higher up before he received a drive through penalty.

“That is our best ever performance,” the Finn said. “It’s not the highest place we’ve had but today we beat two midfield cars in a straight fight so I am very happy, with my performance and the performance of the whole team. We knew we would struggle in the cool conditions yesterday but today the temperatures rose and we expected to be able to put in the sort of race that would do justice to the pace that is in the car,” he added.

Tech chief Mike Gascoyne was equally happy. “That was an absolutely fantastic race from both drivers and from the pitcrew who performed brilliantly under huge pressure. It is very satisfying to have beaten two other midfield teams on track on pace and strategy and to be able to show that we have bridged the gap to the established teams.

“With the tyre degradation we were able to stick to two stops, which was always our plan and that allowed us to jump a couple of people, giving us our strongest race in F1. Additionally, we were only lapped once, right towards the end of the race, so I am very proud of the whole team today,” he beamed.

No statement from Tony Fernandes, but fellow Malaysian CEO Riad Asmat said: “I am actually lost for words. We were racing today, actually taking on teams who have been in the sport for many years, and even though there is a huge amount of work ahead of us, now we need to enjoy this moment, build on this feeling and keep moving forwards.”

Hamilton wins action packed Chinese GP ahead of Red Bulls, brilliant drive from Webber – 18th to the podium!

Lewis Hamilton has won the Chinese GP, preventing Sebastian Vettel from scoring a hat trick of wins. The reigning World Champion finished second ahead of teammate Mark Webber, who drove an amazing race from P18 to a podium spot. The Aussie deserves more than a pat on the back for his battling display which saw him make successful moves on the front runners late in the race – he’s our driver of the day!

Jenson Button finished fourth for McLaren, ahead of Nico Rosberg (Mercedes GP Petronas) and the Ferraris of Massa and Alonso. The rest of the points scoring positions were filled by Michael Schumacher, Vitaly Petrov (Lotus Renault) and Kamui Kobayashi for Sauber.

At the tail end, Team Lotus’ Kovalainen finished 16th and ahead of the Sauber of Sergio Perez and the Williams of Pastor Maldonado, but Perez had a drive through penalty for a collision with Adrian Sutil. Behind them was Trulli, who was ahead of the Virgins and HRTs. There was only one retirement – Jaime Alguersuari lost his right rear tyre from a botched pit stop.

It was all action from the start, where the McLarens sprinted off the line to jump pole man Vettel. Nico Rosberg, starting fourth, had a go at Seb too, but failed. Button-Hamilton-Vettel was the front order for the early part of the race. Mark Webber, starting from P18 after yesterday’s qualifying nightmare, didn’t make much headway at the start as he battled with the Saubers and Williams.

This season’s Pirellis degrade faster, forcing pit stops for more action. And the pit stops played a big part in today’s results. Leader Button and Vettel dived in the pits the same time for their first stop, and Jenson made a mistake by driving into Red Bull’s slot! He realised it soon after, but those wasted seconds saw Vettel jump him. McLaren’s bad pit stop day was followed by Massa jumping Hamilton shortly after.

It wasn’t that straightforward to watch in the middle part, as drivers with different strategies merged on track. Some such as Vettel and the Ferraris chose two stops while the others like Rosberg switched from two to three stops. The McLarens did three stops as well, and that looks like the better option on hindsight. The fresh tyres of Hamilton and Button saw them overtake Massa and Rosberg in the final stages of the race.

Button took considerably more time than his teammate in passing Massa/Rosberg, which left Lewis to do a sole pursuit of Vettel. He caught up pretty soon after and the duo served up a nice duel, with Lewis finally succeeding on lap 52, four laps from the finish. Without KERS (again) and on worn tyres, Vettel was the target of Button, but he couldn’t get close enough.

Meanwhile, Mark Webber was making a late charge, but unlike in Malaysia, his attack paid off handsomely in Shanghai. Successive moves on Massa, Rosberg and Button gave him a deserved third. He got within striking distance of Jenson on the second last lap and made a move at turn 14. Button fought back and looked good to retake him, but Mark managed to make it stick. If he had a few more laps, Vettel would have been in danger!

Outside of the front runners, Schumacher was involved in a few duels, first with Alonso and then with Webber. Toro Rosso’s good qualifying result didn’t turn into a good race day – both Alguersuari and Buemi had poor starts before the former retired. Force India’s Paul di Resta also had quite a bit of camera time. He outdrove Sutil but finished just out of the points.

The changes made this season – KERS, DRS, tyres with shorter life – seems to have successfully injected more racing action so far. Next stop is Turkey on May 8.

New Volkswagen Jetta spotted in apartment carpark?

We’ve already seen the new generation Volkswagen Passat and the new Volkswagen Polo Sedan going around town in the past, but the road convoy’s been missing the model that slots in between them so far – the Volkswagen Jetta.

The new Jetta finally makes its appearance without a road tax sticker or number plates at somewhere which is claimed by reader Paul Wee to be an apartment carpark somewhere in the Klang Valley. Wee doesn’t specify where exactly in his email.

The new Jetta grows in size and wheelbase compared to the outgoing model and it no longer looks like a booted Golf, having its own unique sheetmetal now. It also has a longer wheelbase compared to the Mk6 Golf which should translate to greater interior space.

Chinese GP: Vettel makes it a hat-trick of pole positions!

World champion Sebastian Vettel continued his early season form by taking the third pole position in as many races at the Chinese GP. He lapped the Shanghai circuit in 1m33.706s and will share the front row with McLaren’s Jenson Button, who was 0.715 sec behind the German. Button just outqualified teammate Lewis Hamilton, who was third, while Nico Rosberg brought cheer to the Mercedes GP Petronas camp with a strong fourth.

The Ferraris of Alonso and Massa will occupy the third row. Another team that will be delighted with today’s showing is Scuderia Toro Rosso, which had both cars in Q3. Jaime Alguersuari lines up on the grid in seventh while Seb Buemi is in ninth. They sandwich Force India’s Paul di Resta. Looks like these “midfield teams” that Team Lotus is aiming to challenge have progressed by a fair bit!

The unfortunate Vitaly Petrov of Lotus Renault is in tenth place. 13 minutes into Q2, the Russian’s black/gold car stopped just before turn 6 after he set the fourth fastest time so far, causing officials to stop the session. His time proved to be good enough to enter Q3, but there’s no more car to do so. Let’s hope they can fix the issue in time.

When the session restarted, there was an almighty scramble at the pit exit, and Massa managed to lead the pack and set a good time. It was like a snake, and those at the tail were affected by traffic. Those who fell out in Q2 include the Saubers, both Williams, Sutil, Nick Heidfeld and Michael Schumacher.

Earlier, Q1 saw the usual six drivers from Lotus, Virgin and HRT eliminated, but they were joined by a high profile name in Mark Webber. The Aussie Red Bull driver was sent out at the end on hard tyres to save a result, but he couldn’t improve and will start in 18th tomorrow – shocking!

Of the other six cars, Heikki Kovalainen of Lotus was the fastest with a 1m37.894s lap, ahead of teammate Trulli. The Virgins were next, ahead of the two HRTs, who managed to get inside the 107% time.

Will Vettel make it a hat-trick of wins tomorrow, or will McLaren have a say in that? Tune in to find out, but only if you have Astro, unfortunately.

Looks like Lotus Cars Limited’s five-year business plan is on. The wholly-owned subsidiary of Proton Holdings today signed an agreement for facilities amounting to £270 million (RM1.33 billion), extended by a syndicate of six financial institutions.

The six financial institutions acting as lenders are CIMB Bank, Malayan Banking, Overseas-Chinese Banking Corporation, Export-Import Bank of Malaysia, Affin Bank and EON Bank.

The agreement was inked at the Proton Centre of Excellence Complex in Shah Alam by Group Lotus CEO Dany Bahar on behalf of Lotus Cars Limited, while signing on behalf of their respective banks were Datuk Seri Nazir Tun Razak, group chief executive of CIMB Group; Datuk Seri Abdul Wahid Omar, president and CEO of Maybank; Tuan Syed Abdull Aziz Jailani Syed Kechik, CEO and director of OCBC; Adissadikin Ali, CEO of EXIM Bank; Datuk Zulkiflee Abbas Abdul Hamid, CEO of Affin Bank and Peter TC Chow, head of group business & investment banking and principal officer of EON Bank.

The loan syndication forms part of the funding required to execute Lotus’ five-year business plan. With the conclusion of the syndication exercise, the external portion of the funding is now in place and, together with other financial resources, this means that Lotus has successfully raised the required funding to realise the future plans.

“On behalf of Group Lotus, I would like to express our sincere appreciation to CIMB Group, Malayan Banking Berhad, Overseas Chinese Banking Corporation Limited, Export-Import Bank of Malaysia Berhad, Affin Bank Berhad and EON Bank Berhad for their support and, above all, confidence in our future plans,” Bahar said.

I am confident that the execution of our business plan will mark the return of the iconic Lotus brand into the elite ranks of the world’s premium sportscar manufacturers and generate greater profitability and long-term financial sustainability for the company and its stakeholders,” he added.

“I would like to thank our shareholders, Proton, for the unwavering support and confidence in Lotus. I believe Lotus has a lot to offer to Proton moving forward. As the future plans bear fruit, I am confident that Proton will benefit in terms of branding, product development, and sales and marketing,” Bahar concluded.

Tan Chong initiates service campaign for Nissan Grand Livina, Latio and Latio Sport to fix inaccurate fuel gauge

Edaran Tan Chong Motor (ETCM) has initiated a service campaign for 32,100 units of the Nissan Grand Livina produced from December 2007 to June 2010 and 9,300 units of Nissan Latio and Latio Sport produced from May 2007 to June 2010 in Malaysia.

There has been some cases in which the fuel gauge (meter) may not show an accurate reading, especially at the lower end (might still show that there’s petrol left, even when there’s none). Upon investigation, it was found that such incidents may have been caused by “electrochemical migration on the resistor-card in the fuel gauge being affected by a combination of environmental aspects, fuel variation and etc”.

Owners of the abovementioned models can contact the nearest Tan Chong Express Auto Service Centre or ETCM’s Customer Service Hotline toll free at 1800-88-3838 to book a service appointment. Alternatively, the fix can also be done during your scheduled service. Not all vehicles may have the issue, but this service campaign covers all 41,400 units of the models stated above.

“Customers are always our top priority. We initiated this service campaign to cover all the vehicles produced during the mentioned period even though not all the vehicles may be affected. All labour and replacement parts for this less than an hour exercise will be free-of-charge,” explained ETCM’s Executive Director, Dato’ Dr Ang Bon Beng.

In the meantime, to avoid the inconvenience of an empty tank, ETCM advises owners of the three models to constantly keep their vehicle’s fuel level at “half tank or more” pending replacement of the parts.
