Daimler donates cash and 50 trucks in aid of Japan

The earthquake-tsunami-nuclear crisis that has befallen Japan is one of the major disasters in recent history, wiping out entire towns and communities in a stroke. They who survived desperately need help, and some have heeded the call. German automaker Daimler donated €2 million in cash shortly after the disaster and will now send 50 vehicles to support the rebuilding process.

The 50, worth about €4 million, include eight Mercedes-Benz Zetros trucks, four Mercedes-Benz Unimogs, and eight Merc G-Class off roaders. Thirty Fuso Canter trucks from Japan are also included. They will be given to Nippon Foundation, a Japanese aid organisation headquartered in Tokyo, and will be used primarily to support assistance and clean-up operations in the affected areas. The Mercs are currently being freight forwarded and all 50 will begin operating in two weeks at the latest.

In addition, the management, General Works Council and the executives’ committee of Daimler are together organising a fundraising campaign for the Japanese. So far more than 10,000 Daimler employees in Germany have participated and donated over 500,000 euros to the cause. The cash goes to the German Red Cross, which will forward the donations to the Japanese Red Cross.

MINI Inspired by Goodwood: Rolls-Royce limited edition

Rolls-Royce is the ultimate in luxury, so a MINI blessed with the feel and smell of a Rolls should be a highly coveted luxe accessory with no lack of takers – it’s the perfect partner to that limited edition LV bag! Say hello to the MINI Inspired by Goodwood, a 1000 unit collaboration of the two BMW owned British brands that some say might be priced as high as £50,000.

This little dose of the good life from Goodwood comes with a bespoke cabin supervised by Rolls-Royce interior designer Alan Sheppard. Here, the standard MINI interior is covered with materials that Phantom and Ghost owners are familiar with, including walnut burr veneers on the instrument panel and door pulls, Corn Silk beige leather on the fascia, seats, centre console, door cards and pillar trim. Also check out those deep lambswool fleece carpets.

There’s more. The roof lining, sun visors and boot cover are not in standard fabric, but coated in a Rolls-Royce-spec cashmere blend. The instruments feature RR fonts. The standard colour is RR’s Diamond Black, but one can opt for Reef Blue metallic by MINI.

It’s based on the Cooper S, so you’ll get a twin scroll turbo 1.6L that makes 184 hp and 240 Nm of torque, or 260 Nm on overboost. Sorry, the Rolls-Royce V12 couldn’t fit!

Ford to introduce 15 new models in China by 2015

According to a Reuters report, Ford is set to introduce no less than 15 new models into the Chinese market by 2015 as part of its agressive expansion plans in the world’s number one automotive market.

The company said in a statement that it will be doubling its dealerships in the country from the 340 now over the next five years, and is looking to add 1,200 employees into its workforce there.

The blue oval already makes the Mondeo, Fiesta and Focus, among others, in China, in partnership with Chongqing Changan Automobile and Mazda, and also holds a 30% stake in light commercial vehicle manufacturer Jiangling Motors.

Ford sold 53,440 units in China last month, a 20% increase from the same period in 2010, a significant percentage rise in an overall market that has only grown 5.4% for the month, year on year, the report adds. It’s still a ways away from catching top dog GM though, which sold just over 233,000 vehicles in March. Undoubtedly, it’s looking at closing the gap in a big way over the next five years with the introduction of all those new models.

Cash strapped Saab eyeing to buy current MINI platform

Saab’s production workers are now at home, not because it’s a public holiday, but because the carmaker has stopped production “until further notice” amid a row with suppliers over unpaid bills. Rescued by Spyker at the death last January, Saab is not in very good financial health. The fact that it didn’t meet sales targets last year didn’t help.

Sweden’s National Debt Office received yesterday an application from Saab on changes to its financing aimed to save the cash-strapped company. The NDO has a say in Saab’s finances because it guaranteed a European Investment Bank loan to Saab.

A likely saviour is Russian businessman Vladimir Antonov (pic), who last month said he was ready to invest 50 million euros in Saab in exchange for a 30% stake. At the time of Saab’s sale, GM didn’t let Antonov take a stake over concerns that its intellectual property rights will fall into the wrong hands.

Cashflow problems aside, Saab still has ambitions. Reports say that it’s lining up to buy the current MINI platform from BMW, which Munich will retire in late 2012 when an all-new F56 MINI is launched. This is after securing a deal to use the MINI’s 1.6L turbo engine. These are all for Saab’s upcoming “9-1″ small car, which from the looks of it, will be a “MINI with different styling”.

Kia Forte Koup captures company’s first-ever racing win

It’s the first one ever for the company, making it a meaningful and historic moment for Kia Motors in just its second year of involvement in motorsports. The No. 10 Kinetic Motorsports/Infinity Audio Forte Koup, co-driven by Nic Jonsson and Michael Galati, took the ST class win in the GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge (CTSCC) race, making for a very big feather in the brand’s cap as it continues its rise globally.

Fresh from his win at the Malaysian Grand Prix, and ahead of this weekend’s Chinese Grand Prix, Formula One World Champion Sebastian Vettel had a different type of cameo run on track, test driving two Infiniti vehicles around a test track in Shanghai.

The Red Bull Racing driver took to the wheel of a 5.0 litre V8 Infiniti FX50, followed by a 3.7 litre V6 Infiniti G37 sedan, and amazed onlookers by lapping the circuit at high speed and demonstrating the handling capabilities of the luxury road cars.

The 23 year-old world champ thought the whole thing was a blast. “It was great fun to drive these Infiniti cars today. I was impressed; they have good handling and plenty of power – which is always a good mix – it was fun out on the track. I have been driving an FX50 myself recently, they’re nice cars and it’s great that more dealerships are opening in China.”

After the drive session, Vettel visited an Infiniti Center in Shanghai where he met fans and senior Infiniti executives, plus toured the showroom to take a closer look at the full Infiniti range available there. Ah, yes, the benefits of signing on as a major partner with a F1 team – lots of great publicity and PR, from a world champ at that. The brand is due to make its debut in Malaysia late this year.

Peugeot SXC Concept: New look applied on a crossover

It’s an indication of China’s prominence that so many carmakers are lining up to set up world debuts in Shanghai. Peugeot is one of them, and the French marque that’s targeting 200,000 sales this year plans to launch at least one new model per year in the world’s largest auto market. At this year’s Auto Shanghai, they will launch the 508 saloon for China and also show off this sleek looking crossover concept called SXC.

Done by Peugeot Style Studios of the China Tech Center in Shanghai, the SXC (which stands for Shanghai Cross Concept) takes Peugeot’s new look first seen on the SR1 and applies it to a crossover body. According to the design team, SXC adopts certain characteristics from the world of the SUV (such as strength, high driving position, protection), without caricaturing them. It’s modern, elegant and refined and “close to the upmarket world of the saloons”.

At 4.87 m long and 2.035 m wide, the SXC is quite a large vehicle, mirroring the size of an Infiniti FX. Main styling points to look out for are the “floating grille”, “feline headlamps”, boomerang rear lamps, reverse-hinged doors, two-part panoramic roof and the use of brushed aluminium on the exterior.

Power is courtesy of Peugeot’s HYbrid4 technology. which sees a 218 hp 1.6-litre THP engine driving the front wheels and a 70 kW (95 hp) electric motor driving the rears. Combined fuel consumption is rated at 5.8 L/100 km and CO2 emissions is at 143 g/km. The drivetrain has a “zero emissions” mode powered solely by the electric motor at low speeds.

Volkswagen mulling stake in Isuzu, eyeing possible takeover

According to reports, Volkswagen is considering taking a stake in Isuzu Motors or purchasing the company outright, though it looks like a decision won’t be made anytime soon.

Seemingly, one of VW’s board members, Jochem Heizmann, has visited Isuzu’s production sites and held talks with the Japanese company, which is Japan’s largest manufacturer of medium to heavy trucks and of which Toyota has a 5.9% stake in.

Apparently, VW also discussed the possibility of MAN acquiring a holding in Isuzu, which would put the latter into the Veedub fold by proxy – VW holds a close to 30% stake in the German truckmaker. Both MAN and Isuzu declined to comment on the reports.

VW is of course on a quest to attain the No 1 automaker spot in the world, and is looking to acquire brands to aid its march to the top – Porsche is already set to become VW’s 10th brand, and the company is looking at Alfa Romeo as a possible addition to the stable.

Next gen BMW 1-Series hatchback snapped in Munich

This next generation BMW 1-Series hatchback was snapped by Danny while he was in Munich last week for a BMW press event. Since the E87 5-door hatch has been around since 2004, it’s about time now for a refresher, which is expected to come soon in the form of the new F20 1-Series.

This next generation model will probably be in hatchback body forms only at first, as the E82 coupe and E88 cabrio models made their debut only three years later in 2007 and they still have quite some time left in their lifecycle. After all, the new BMW 1-Series M Coupe has only just been released.

Hopefully the new F20 will bring about much needed improvements in interior space. The current 1-er is really quite poor in terms of rear legrooms compared to other C-segment hatchbacks, and a lot of that probably has to do with the fact that it’s one of the very very few rear wheel drive hatchbacks around. It would also be nice for the 1-er to debut with a range of smaller 4-cylinder or perhaps even 3-cylinder TwinPower Turbo engines – a 1.6 turbo like the one in the MINI range would be nice!

Look after the jump for the rest of the spy snaps.
