Nissan Lafesta based on Mazda Premacy teased online

Nissan Japan has put up a teaser page of their new Nissan Lafesta on their webpage. This new Lafesta is essentially a rebadged Mazda 5, known as the Mazda Premacy in Japan.

It actually looks pretty good – even better than the original in fact, since Nissan has elected to remove those wavy lines at the side of the original Mazda 5. No specs yet but we think the engine will be one and the same as the Mazda, as there would be no point to reengineer the MPV to accept a Nissan engine.

Look after the jump for the rest of the teaser pix.

Proton presents black Inspira 2.0 to Datuk Lee Chong Wei

We’re here at Proton’s Centre of Excellence along the KESAS for a simple ceremony, where Proton has just presented world number one badminton player Datuk Lee Chong Wei a Proton Inspira in recognition of his accomplishments in the sport. Lee was handed the mock key by Proton chairman, Datuk Seri Mohd Nadzmi, who is also the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) president.

Lee, who is known to own a Nissan GT-R, among other vehicles, will be using the Inspira 2.0P as his “official transport” to badminton events, so we hear. Of the four colours, Lee chose black. Proton Group MD Datuk Seri Syed Zainal joked that he had promised Lee a Proton for quite some time – so maybe LCW was holding out for the Inspira!

“Our contribution to badminton goes beyond brand building, but working together with BAM, it underlines our commitment to seeing badminton in Malaysia continue to excel for many future generations to come,” said Syed Zainal. Proton first supported the sport 16 years ago in 1995, when it was entrusted by the government to act as corporate custodian under the Sports Partnership Programme.

World No. 1 Lee is the reigning back-to-back All England champion. This year, he won his seventh consecutive Proton Malaysian Open title. He won a silver medal in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

Bristol Cars lives again, helped indirectly by an old friend

Never let a good thing go to waste, indeed. Such is the case with Bristol Cars, which has apparently been rescued from slipping into history and obscurity by a Swiss company called Kamkorp Autokraft, reports say.

Bristol, the last British luxury car manufacturer remaining in private British hands, looked to be going out of business after 65 years when it went into administration in March. At that point, 22 of its 27 employees had been made redundant, including all workers at the manufacturing unit in Filton, Bristol.

The acquisition by Kamkorp means that Bristol has been given a new lease of life, and there’s even a bit of nostalgia and romanticism surrounding the purchase, if you consider the history.

Kamkorp is part of the Frazer Nash group, which includes Frazer Nash Consultancy and EV division Frazer Nash Research, the latter being the company that assisted in the development of the Proton Exora Hybrid, which won the “Best Range Extender EV” award at the Royal Automobile Club (RAC) Future Car Challenge event in the UK last November.

Nothing out of the ordinary, except that the Frazer Nash of today is descended from Brit automaker Frazer Nash, which began life in 1922. In the late ’40s and ’50s, FN used Bristol engines in its cars, and these included the Targa Florio, Sebring and the Le Mans Replica.

Moving ahead into the future, the report says that Kamkorp intends to blend Bristol’s legendary craftsmanship with the modern technology of Frazer Nash; the idea of a Bristol EV sportscar is definitely not far-fetched. So then, a case of the king is dead, long live the king, by the looks of it.

Volkswagen now offers 5-yr roadside assistance in Malaysia

Yet more in the way of value-added items for Veedub owners – Volkswagen Group Malaysia has announced the start of the Volkswagen five-year premium roadside assistance programme.

As its title suggests, never fret if something untoward happens to your VW – rather than finding a tow truck in the dead of night, relying on friends or family or simply counting on someone to stop and help, a single phone call will have assistance on the way.

In the event that the vehicle is immobilised due to an accident or breakdown, the 24-hour Volkswagen Premium Roadside Assistance (VPRSA) hotline can be contacted for said immediate assistance. If it’s possible for minor repairs to be carried out, VPRSA will arrange for such repairs on the roadside. In the event it isn’t possible to repair the car on the site, VPRSA will arrange for the vehicle to be towed.

The offering announced today follows on the five-year warranty with unlimited mileage that was launched by the company last year.

In the case of the five-year premium roadside assistance programme, it’s offered to new Volkswagen car owners who have purchased their cars from 2009 onward. If you’re a VW owner, it’s all great stuff, undoubtedly.

Toyota to adjust production volume temporarily in Malaysia

The effects of the earthquake that hit Japan continue to show, this time right here. UMW Toyota Motor has issued an announcement that there could be disruptions in parts supplies coming in from Japan, and it is preparing for this by making adjustments to its production from April 25 to June 3.

The adjustments will come in the form of implemented cuts in overtime and a change to a single-shift operation from April 25. On June 6, a revised production plan will be made, in line with the recovery of parts supply, it says.

Seemingly, this will inevitably translate into delays in customers getting their new rides, but UMW Toyota stresses that it has communicated and will update all its customers individually concerning their vehicle delivery status. It adds that it will closely monitor the parts supply situation in Japan and will provide any updates or information in a timely manner.

Jaguar XF gets facelift – cosmetic changes, mostly

Jaguar has introduced its facelifted XF sedan at the New York show, and leading the list of changes are cosmetic enhancements which bring the car’s exterior in-line with the design language introduced on the flagship XJ.

Revisions to the grille, hood, and front fenders, which incorporate new triangular side vents, give the car a more muscular appearance. Three front fascia and lower rear valance treatments differentiate between model levels, and the XF Supercharged hood is fitted with louvers featuring the “supercharged” script, while the XFR gets styling upgrades that further differentiate it from the other XF models.

Also new are bi-function HID xenon headlamps, which incorporate LED daytime running lights arranged in a distinctive Jaguar ‘J-Blade’ signature. Over at the back, the tail lamps have also been redesigned and now extend onto the central portion of the trunk lid, and feature LED lighting for stop, tail and turn signal function.

A revised trunk lid trim with a gloss black lower edge separates the tail lamps, and the trunk also features a power latch on all models. Elsewhere, three new colour shades and an expanded selection of alloy wheels, ranging from 18- to 20-inch units round off the revised exterior styling.

The old, and the new

The interior has also been updated, with changes coming in the form of new trim shades, seats, audio systems and instrument panel. The revised front and rear seats incorporate a ‘hoop’ design element on the seat and backrest that improves both appearance and support, and feature a choice of new colour combinations and veneers.

Trim-wise, the centre console, dashboard, and steering wheel get a new colour scheme, where buttons and switchgear are now in dressed in black, and the ‘Tungsten’ finish has been replaced by a more contemporary ‘Aurora’ theme.

Elsewhere, the instrument cluster information display is now a full-colour TFT unit, which offers greater resolution and clarity, and the seven-inch touchscreen now comes with a new polarizing filter for improved contrast – it also features a revised graphics palette, as well as additional buttons below the screen to switch instantly between different functions.

As for infotainment changes, three new audio systems are to be found, headed by an optional 1200 watt, 17-speaker Bowers & Wilkins premium surround sound system. Lastly, the hard-drive based satellite navigation system now offers multiple connection options, with two USB ports and Bluetooth connectivity now on for the ride.

Team Lotus to takeover Caterham? We’ll know next week!

Now here’s a piece of interesting news. We received an invite by Team Lotus for an event that’s to be held at The Imperial War Museum in Duxford, UK.

With the headline “Team Lotus Powers Ahead”, the 10:30 am April 27 event is all about two things – the T128 doing a “straightline aero test” and “an incredibly exciting announcement about the future of our team”.

What’s this you ask. Well, we were scratching our heads too, but reports from the UK are saying that this big announcement is likely to be of Tony Fernandes’ Team Lotus buying over Caterham, famous as the maker of the Seven. Yes, you read right, they’re saying that Team Lotus is going to buy a carmaker, one whose defining model started life as a Lotus!

Autosport’s sources points out that this possible takeover of Caterham would provide marketing and technical opportunities between the F1 operation and the road car business. Autocar says that the Kent-based company, owned by private equity firm Corven Ventures and run by former Lotus exec Ansar Ali, will net fresh investment and ambitious product plans with this deal, which Team Lotus has not commented on.

Another interesting view is that by having Caterham on board, Team Lotus will have a car brand to fall back on if it loses in the Lotus name battle with Group Lotus.

The naming rights case is currently being played in British courts, with a verdict not likely to be out till next month.

How’s this for a twist? Stay tuned for updates!

Castrol EDGE Experience Nurburgring – Days 1 & 2

Castrol

Just earlier this year, Castrol Malaysia had a competition called the Castrol EDGE Experience Nurburging challenge, where contestants had to undergo several stages of challenges before ending up at the grand finals at Sepang where they underwent various driving challenges.

At the end of the day, everyone went back with something but there was only one person who would be heading to the Nordschleife to undergo an amazing driving program, all thanks to Castrol Malaysia. That lucky man was Khairul Izwan Razali!

Although the Nurburgring is closer to Frankfurt, we landed in Munich as the program included visits to the BMW Welt, the BMW Museum and BMW Classic. We would make our way to the Nurburgring via a 6 hour bus ride later.

BMW Classic is somewhat like a little historical car museum, but with limited access to the public, unlike the BMW Museum. It’a also a workshop where owners can send their classic BMWs to be restored by BMW themselves.

There’s plenty of evidence of Castrol’s long standing relationship with BMW here – there are so many old racecars with the Castrol logo on them.

This is a prototype E32 7-Series with a V16 engine. It was developed as a testbed for BMW as at that time they were considering introducing something more upmarket than a 7-Series.

The engine is so huge that the cooling systems could not completely fit into the engine bay – the radiator and other components were moved to the rear into the boot.

This is the James Bond E38 7-Series – you can watch it in action by clicking this link. It has been specially modified to be able to be controlled by a driver sitting on the rear floor behind the front passenger seat, so the car would appear to be driving itself in the movie.

This is a concept scooter with a roof produced in conjunction with Louis Vuitton – all the leather you see is by LV. You can find more photos of this scooter in the gallery after the jump.

We then moved to the BMW Welt, which was basically a huge BMW showroom with an amazing architecture pretty much devoid of pillars – they’re there but they’re kept to a minimum and very cleverly disguised.

This creates a feeling of spaciousness – you’re basically in a giant hall with a roof over you that looks like metallic clouds.

Customers from around the world (limited countries of course) could do what they call an “European Delivery” here. An American customer can order his BMW, then fly over to Munich and take delivery of his car in a grand way at the BMW Welt, drive through Europe for a road trip, and fly back to the US after you drop the car off to be loaded on a ship.

It was fun checking out all the models that we don’t get to see in Malaysia in the metal – an F10 535d M-Sport looks delicious!

This Castrol-themed BMW M3 Coupe was parked outside the BMW Welt. We didn’t know it at this time but we were going to be taken around the Nurburgring GP Circuit by Dirk Muller in this car.

Just next to BMW Welt is the BMW Museum. It’s exhibits include old and new BMW models as well as the more important concept cars that BMW have unveiled over the years.

The BMW Art Car collection is also on display here.

Lots of funky concept cars including the GINA Concept shown recently.

Now you may be wondering why a Castrol event had so much BMW intertwined in it – we’ve visited so many BMW buildings and then we’re heading off to the Green Hell to be guided by BMW driver trainers. Castrol has a long standing partnership with BMW and is BMW Motorsport’s Premier Technical Partner.

They work closely to develop lubricants. In fact, BMW says BMW M engines such as the one in the M3 and the M5 must run Castrol TWS 10W60, or Castrol EDGE 10W60. Castrol engine oils and functional fluids are recommended for all BMW cars and motorcycles. Castrol supplies BMW with first fill lubricants for new BMW cars.

The partnership between Castrol and BMW began in 1999 as a way of developing, testing and optimizing the combination of car, fuel and engine oil technologies.

As well as working together on the commercial brands within the BMW group, Castrol have worked in partnership across numerous motorsport properties in both the two and four-wheel categories with notable championship victories for Andy Priaulx in the 2005, 2006 and 2007 World Touring Car Championships.

According to Castrol Senior Development Technologist Simon Gurney, Castrol EDGE has been tested to the extreme – for example, their endurance test runs the engine at maximum power and fires a total of 147,000,000 times, more than 3.5 times than it would during a Nürburgring 24 hour race.

For events like the Castrol EDGE Experience Nürburgring, the importance of this level of testing becomes clear. According to Gurney, the standard engine speed for a BMW M3 on a lap of the Nürburgring is 7100rpm, with a peak engine speed of 8,400rpm. The piston speed inside the engine will be around 20m/s (approx 60mph).

On average the engine will fire 240,000 times per lap, amounting to 39,000,000 in a single Nürburgring 24hour race. It’s critical that drivers are able to rely on the highest level of performance being delivered on demand.

Anyway, after enjoying the BMW Museum, we loaded up into the bus and headed off to the Nurburgring. It was a very long bus ride, but the European scenery was pleasant and very different from what you see here in Malaysia.

The sun casts its shine a differently, which explains why European photos always look nicer, and you can have extremely bright days that hurt your eyes but the outside temperature would still be chilly.

A few hours into the bus ride, I started seeing an increased frequency of powerful cars and superbikes on the road. I had wondered if this meant we were getting very close to the Nurburgring. Sure enough, a couple of minutes later it was announced that we were 10 minutes away from our hotel.

Now that we are here at the ‘Ring, we will undergo a BMW Driver Training course for one whole day before we hit the Green Hell the next day. Here’s where the fun starts. More on that next week!

Kia Soul gets facelift, but when is it coming to Malaysia?

The Kia Soul is long overdue here in Malaysia, so long that the funky box has received a mid life facelift, as revealed in New York. The usual facelift rules apply here, but the Soul also gets new powertrains.

A new 1.6-litre gasoline direct injection (GDI) engine mated to a six-speed manual produces 140 PS – an 11% increase over the previous engine – and 164 Nm. Some markets such as the US get a new 2.0-litre unit available with six-speed transmissions, manual and auto. The 2.0 produces 162 PS and 194 Nm.

On the outside, Soul is freshened with new projector headlamps with LED daytime running lights (a must have these days), a redesigned hood and new front and rear bumpers. The rear lights are also LEDs. Kia says that the overall shape of the vehicle has been “finessed” for a smoother and more streamlined silhouette.

New creature comforts include an Infinity premium audio system for the higher trim levels. Also new is the UVO powered by Microsoft in-car hands-free communication/infotainment system. A Premium Package is also available with heated front seats, leather seat trim, automatic climate control, and navigation system. The car you see here is fully loaded with all these features.

A MINI Countryman for a fraction of the price? This could be it. But when it’s coming is anyone’s guess. Full gallery after the jump.

2012 Nissan Versa Sedan launched in NYC – it’s the Sunny!

Nissan has unveiled the Versa Sedan for North America at the ongoing New York auto show. As you can see, the Versa Sedan is the same car as the Sunny that debut in Guangzhou last year, but with a different name. In the US, Versa refers to the hatchback we know as the Latio Sport. The busy company also just unveiled the new Tiida hatch in Shanghai.

This 2012 model year Versa Sedan is being tagged as the “Big Small Car”, one that offers mid size tech without the mid size price – it starts at $10,990. The mid size tech Nissan is talking about includes things like Fine Vision instruments, Bluetooth, navigation system with 5-inch touch-screen display, Satellite Radio and an iPod/USB interface.

The Versa Sedan/Sunny sits on Nissan’s global V platform (V for Versatile), which also underpins the March. Compared to the Versa hatchback’s B platform, the V utilises nearly 20% fewer components and weighs around 150 pounds less. Size wise, this car’s footprint isn’t that different from its predecessor (Latio to us); width is the same while length is up by 11 mm to make 4,426 mm.

The 2,600 mm wheelbase is unchanged. Nissan claims better rear legroom than the Mercedes E-Class, BMW 5-Series and Lexus LS460. Sounds incredulous, but having sat in it before, I believe them. Sometimes, it’s not about the bare figures but the packaging.

The exterior is identical with the car we saw in Guangzhou, down to the same rims, and the differences in the cabin is down to spec. The car we see here has steering wheel controls and electric wing mirror controls that the China spec we shot didn’t, but it looks like auto climate control won’t be available in the US – there are three rotary knobs in a triangle in place of the Sunny’s donut-like controls.

Under the hood is the 1.6-litre HR16DE 4-cylinder engine with twin CVTC, bigger brother of the HR15DE used in the Chinese Sunny. Compared to previous versions, this latest HR gets two injectors for every cylinder. The finer spray from the smaller nozzles brings more stable combustion. The engine makes 109 hp at 6,000 rpm and 145 Nm at 4,400 rpm. The Sunny’s HR15DE has 110 hp (112 PS) at 5,600 and 139 Nm at 4,000 rpm.

Transmission options are between a five-speed manual and the Xtronic CVT. The latter is the latest gen design that adds an auxiliary gearbox using planetary gearing, helping improve efficiency. It also has a transmission ratio of 7.3:1, broader than those of conventional CVTs and typical 7-speed autos. Friction is reduced by about 30%, weight by about 13% and overall size by about 10% versus the previous Versa Sedan’s CVT.

To be manufactured at Nissan’s Aguascalientes, Mexico plant that also builds Sentras for the US, the Versa Sedan goes on sale this summer in the States.

Full gallery after the jump. Click here to view the Sunny world debut in China last year.
