Citroen DS5 arrives, completes the Different Spirit line-up

Citroen has unveiled the third model in its DS line in Shanghai, and this one is pretty much targeted at the executive segment. The DS5, as it’s called, is based on the C-SportLounge concept, and completes the intended Different Spirit range, the other two being the DS4 and DS3 hatch..

It’s the first model from the brand to feature HYbrid4 diesel hybrid technology, and in this case there’s 200 hp on tap in the four-wheel drive vehicle, which is encapsulated in a 4.52m long and 1.85m wide body.

You get five real seats, four doors and all the access and modularity of a hatchback, as well as a driving position worthy of a Gran Turismo coupe, so says Citroen. There’s good cargo space too, with up to 465 litres to be had in this one.

External design elements include an oversized air intake, a large chrome-finished grille that houses the chevrons, a new LED light signature and chrome-finished ‘sabre’ inserts that stretch from the top of each headlamp to the windscreen.

At the back, key strokes of a very meaty tail include twin tailpipes built into the rear bumper and a rear signature featuring six light guides. A sizeable range of alloy wheels, from 16- to 19-inchers, adds to the flourish.

Inside, the driver-focused cockpit features a coupe-like driving position with a near-vertical steering wheel and a wide central console. Plenty in the way of switchgear too – an array of buttons, switches, scroll wheels and toggles are grouped on two central consoles, one low down and one above the driver’s head, aircraft-style.

There’s also push-start ignition, a colour Head-Up Display and lots of premium materials and design cues on call, from fine-grain Club leather to the watchstrap-pattern seat upholstery.

For its Shanghai debut, the DS5 on show appears in a one-off livery known as the Citroen DS5 White Pearl, wearing 20-inch alloys. The cabin on this one features ebony-coloured full-grain leather contrasted with silver-flecked overstitching, and interior detailing includes decorative inserts in Markassa ebony and a highly reflective, multi-layered lacquer fascia.

Bravo replacement won’t be a regular hatch, Fiat to ‘do a Nissan Qashqai’ to rival Golf and Focus

Not many know of it here, but Nissan has pulled off a masterstroke by introducing the Qashqai (called Dualis in Japan) in 2007. The C-segment family hatch market is not a friendly place for those trying to snatch sales from the Golf and Focus, even more so for a Japanese brand.

So instead of taking the market head on, they made an SUV styled car to offer something different, and it has paid off handsomely. The British made Qashqai is the fifth best selling C-segment car in Europe, behind only to the Golf, Focus, Astra and Megane, which all have more bodystyles. A Nissan that sells more than the equivalent Peugeot, Skoda and Fiat in Europe? Wouldn’t have dreamt that with the Almera for sure!

Now comes the news that Fiat will be using the same strategy for their next C-segment car. Group CEO Sergio Marchionne wants them to replace the pretty but slow selling Bravo with an all-new high-roof crossover inspired by the Qashqai. Marchionne first hinted at this in Detroit early this year, and the decision was finalised late last month, according to Automotive News Europe. Sources said that this car will appear in 2013.

Actually, the Bravo vs Qashqai comparison is apt. Both cars came into the market in 2007, with the Fiat having sexy good looks and home territory advantage. But the taller riding car outsells the Italian one by 5-to-1. Sales of the Bravo have been slipping badly. Only 44,850 units found new homes in 2010, which is less than what the Skoda Yeti, a niche product, managed.

Fiat’s original aim was to sell at least 120,000 Bravos a year. The company said the car would make a profit as long as 75,000 units were sold a year. That target was hit in 2007 and 2008, but never since.

Will this “crossover strategy” work for Fiat? Nothing’s certain, but it’s surely a better bet than taking on the giants in a straight fight!

Volkswagen Beetle – new generation bug makes debut

Thirteen years since the New Beetle arrived on the scene, and more than a million examples on, the new to replace the New is finally here – The Beetle, as the new one is simply called, made its global debut today, and quite litreally at that.

The latest generation bug was unveiled earlier in Shanghai, Berlin and New York, embedded in MTV World Stage Concerts, with the official introduction at the Shanghai Port International Cruise Terminal – on the eve of the Shanghai Motor Show – kicking off things.

Breaking free of the geometry of the previous model and displaying a sportier appeal, the new Beetle (not New, but new) features, among other design changes, an extended bonnet, sharply swept-back windscreen and a longer wheelbase. The interior has been worked on considerably, and now offers a driver-oriented coupé experience as well as a distinctly improved feeling of space, aided by a longer roof section.

Working on a “design a new original” objective, the design team, led by Walter De Silva, VW’s design chief (from Group) and Klaus Bischoff (from Brand), have come up with a Beetle that’s bolder, more dynamic and more masculine than the old car.

Indeed, nothing remains as it was on the 1998 car. The Beetle not only has a lower profile, it’s also substantially wider and features a longer front bonnet, while the front windscreen is shifted further back and has a much steeper incline. While the New Beetle was defined by three semi-circles (front wing, rear wing, domed roof above it), the new model has broken free of this geometry – the roof profile actually runs distinctly lower and can be considered a continuation of the Ragster concept car, which was shown in Detroit in 2005.

The new bug is 1,808 mm wide, 1,486 mm tall and 4,278 mm long, which makes it 84 mm wider, 12 mm lower and 152 mm longer than the New Beetle. The new car’s track widths and wheelbase have also been increased. The gain in length means that the roof is now extended further and the front windscreen shifted back, with the rear section following the contour of the original Beetle, the new focal point now being the C-pillar.

Here’s something for the anorak: If you take the original Beetle and the new Beetle and place them in a room together, shining light just over the roofs and viewing them from the side, you’ll see that the lines of the rear sections are nearly identical.

Traditional design characteristics remain, including the round headlights (optional bi-xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights are available for the first time in this model series), the flared wings as well as the shape of the bonnets, sides and door sills.

There’s a new rear spoiler that is homogeneously integrated in the design, available as standard on some variants. Incidentally, the top surface of the rear spoiler is always black, while its underside is painted in the body colour, which are available in 12 different hues. Sizeably, the new bug can accomodate wheels up to 19-inches, good news for those who like their round bits large.

Inside, The Beetle’s cockpit has been reworked, with everything pretty much redesigned, with key items within reach and sight. Classicists will love some of the cues in here. Similar to the original Beetle, the new car has an extra glovebox integrated in the front fascia, whose lid folds upward (the standard glovebox that is also integrated opens downward). Another classic feature is the optional auxiliary instrument grouping above the selected audio/navigation system, which display oil temperature, clock with stopwatch function and boost pressure gauge.

Improvements abound too in terms of boot space, with 310 litres compared to the 209 litres on the older car. As usual, the car has a split, folding rear seatback and a wide opening bootlid, making for easier loading and unloading of cargo.

Engine-wise, the US will get petrol engines in 170 PS and 200 PS output form, as well as a 140 PS 2.0 TDI turbodiesel lump, the first time that one is available there. Partnering gearbox configurations for the diesel variant are a six-speed manual or a six-speed DSG, while choices for the petrol versions are a six-speed manual or a six-speed auto, with the larger output TSI available with DSG as an option.

Meanwhile, the rest of the world gets 105 PS, 140 PS, 160 PS and 200 PS mills. In markets such as Asia, Australia, Europe and New Zealand, the new Beetle will be offered exclusively with charged four-cylinder engines, in TSI or TDI guise.

The three charged TSI petrol engines are the 105 PS 1.2 TSI (with BlueMotion Technology, and including Stop/Start system and battery regeneration), 160 PS 1.4 TSI and 200 PS 2.0 TSI, while the two diesel engines are the 105 PS 1.6 TDI and 140 PS 2.0 TDI jobs (incidentally, the TDI engines are not going to be offered in China). All five engines get DSG transmission as a drivetrain option.

The 160 PS (European version) and 200 PS (worldwide) petrol-engine variants come with a factory-installed XDS electronic differential lock as standard. XDS – which extends the familiar EDS functionality – improves handling in fast curve driving and calibrates the car toward more “neutral” steering; it does this by using active brake intervention to prevent wheelspin of the unloaded wheel on the inside of the curve, and this improves traction. Elsewhere, electronic stabilisation programme comes as standard, as is a network of six airbags.

Three equipment lines will be available for the car, these being tagged Beetle, Design and Sport, each with their own unique character. Among the key features in the equipment lines are the aforementioned bi-xenon headlights and LED daytime running lights; 15 LEDs frame the xenon module on the outer perimeters of the headlights, and implement the daytime running lights and parking lights.

Elsewhere in the mix are a transparent panoramic tilt/slide glass sunroof, Keyless Access, radio-navigation systems, even an optional Premium sound system by Fender, replete with an additional woofer and 400 watts of output power; bagging the system gets you adjustable interior ambience lighting as well, and this includes two light rings around the loudspeaker boxes in the doors.

The Beetle will be launched in the US first, around September/October this year, followed by Europe sometime in October/November. Then Asia gets its turn in February 2012, followed by South America in late 2012 or early 2013. You’ll find the photo gallery of The Beetle after the jump.

Black Volkswagen Jetta TSI spotted in Hartamas

The Black Jetta has been spotted again, this time on the go with a white Volkswagen Polo hatchback accompanying it. These photos were snapped by reader Ian Chew in Hartamas.

Notice the “TSI” badging on the rear of the Jetta, which means this particular black Jetta has one of Volkswagen’s downsized turbocharged engines in the engine bay. The Polo Sedan that we saw previously did not have TSI badging, but instead featured the “1.6″ badge.

We can take these as rough indications as to what engines these new yet to be launched Volkswagens will be available with, but we cannot be 100% sure. These may just be CBU models being tested, while we’re supposed to get CKD versions.

But in any case, all three Volkswagen sedans that are supposed to be CKD assembled in Malaysia have already been sighted being driven around on our roads with trade plates, that could be a good sign of them being available soon. If you notice, the rear window of the Jetta has the number “3″ on it – this could indicate that it has been used sometime in the past for some kind of event involving a convoy – perhaps dealer/sales training or something.

Proton co-organises Pertandingan Kemahiran Malaysia Ke-20 – Sektor Teknologi Automobil

Over 150 youths representing various local institutes of higher learning, as well as the government and private sector attended the Pertandingan Kemahiran Malaysia Ke-20 – Sektor Teknologi Automobil (pra kelayakan) last weekend in Alor Setar, Kedah. The skills competition was co-organised by the Human Resource Ministry and national carmaker Proton, which is also the event’s main sponsor.

Besides the above mentioned Automotive Technology main category, which is open to youths aged 22 years or below, other categories include Pertandingan Kemahiran Proton (for Proton technicians/mechanics), Pertandingan Kemahiran Peringkat Terbuka (for coaches/trainers in vocational and technical institutes) and Pertandingan Kemahiran MySkills (for teachers and coaches).

The winner of the finals will receive RM5,000 in cash as well as medal and certificate, but the bigger prize could be being in the running to represent Malaysia in the ASEAN and international stage of the competition.

The brainchild of ex-PM and Proton adviser Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamed, Pertandingan Kemahiran Malaysia is a government initiative that aims to sharpen and bring forward the talent of youths in vocational and technical studies. It focuses on 21 skills that involve seven main industries: automotive, construction, manufacturing, ICT, hospitality, cosmetology and wood/handicrafts.

Proton’s involvement in this competition started in 2003 when the automotive category was introduced. As part of its contribution to this year’s edition, Proton set up a showcase of vehicles created in house by its employees in an innovation competition. Some of the modified cars were also shown at KLIMS 2010. There was also a recruitment drive for youths interested in joining the automotive industry.

Those who attended the carnival at the Stadium Darul Aman car park also got to enjoy a drift demo by sideways king Tengku Djan, who is also R3 head, motorcycle shows and performances by local artistes.

Proton collects first IRC 2011 points at Rally Islas Canarias in Spain, two cars finished in 9th and 16th

After a heartbreaking season opening Monte Carlo Rally, Proton Motorsports has collected its first points of the 2011 Intercontinental Rally Challenge (IRC) season. Italian driver Giandomenico Basso finished ninth in the Rally Islas Canarias El Corte Inglés in Spain, the second round of IRC 2011. The rally was won by Skoda’s Juha Hanninen ahead of teammate Jan Kopecky and the Peugeot of Thierry Neuville in third.

The yellow Neo S2000 of Basso was the best placed car that wasn’t a Fabia or 207. Team mate PG Andersson completed the rally in 16th place. Proton now has 16 points, two behind Subaru, but a long way behind powerhouses Skoda and Peugeot.

“It is a positive result to start with the new team…I think we did a good job and now that the event is over, we will be discussing what further improvements we can make to the car with as there is still a long way to go in the championship,” Basso said.

PG Andersson lost a lot of ground on Day 1 of the rally due to two punctures. The Swede stopped to change a first puncture but with the absence of a second spare tyre, was forced to tackle special stage six nursing a slow puncture. That dropped him to drop to 19th overall, but the ex JWRC champ fought back hard on the second and final day to reduce the deficit to 16th.

After Monte Carlo, the team will be happy to see two cars finish the rally and put some points on the board. This also comes after Proton’s win at the APRC season opening Malaysian Rally earlier this month.

The next IRC event is the Tour de Corse at Corsica Island, France next month.

ISIS AM01 – a street-legal sportscar based on the Saker GT

It’s called the ISIS AM01, and it’s built by a small Dutch company called Isis Cars, which is the brainchild of Anton van Nunen and Max Alting Siberg. The AM01 is due to be launched officially at the end of May, but the first prototype is currently on show at the ongoing AutoRAI 2011 show in Amsterdam.

The AM01 is based on the Saker GT, another Dutch racing car designed strictly for the race track. It took van Nunen, Siberg and Saker Sportscars three years of testing and integrating a diverse range of materials, shapes and concepts to modify the latter into the AM01, which is street legal.

The multi-tube chassis/fiberglass body vehicle is powered by a 2.0 litre turbocharged Subaru boxer engine, here offering 275 hp and 350 Nm, mated to a five-speed manual transmission.

The power output might not sound like much, but with the rear-wheel drive vehicle weighing in at just 850 kg, it’s enough juice to get the AM01 from 0-100 kph in just 4.2 seconds and to a top speed of 260 kph.

When it goes on sale, the AM01 can be had at 120,000 Euros, but there’s more to be had than just this one from Isis – the company has signaled its intention to start a small series production of a second model called the AM02 later this year, with just 10 cars to be made.

The AM02 will again be based on the Saker chassis, but the body will incorporate further developments in shape and feature, among other things, a 400 hp 3.0 litre mill, six-speed gearbox and body material options such as carbon fibre or aluminium/carbon fibre.

Spy images of Kia K2 surface ahead of Shanghai debut

These leaked and spied shots are of the yet to be launched Chinese market Kia K2, tipped to make its debut at the Shanghai show. Its name and styling are exactly what one would expect of a smaller sibling to the Kia K5.

The K5, or Optima to the rest of us, is a sharply styled D-segment saloon that was introduced to the Chinese market last month. Made by the Dongfeng-Yueda-Kia joint venture, the K5 was launched with two engine options – a 2.0 with 165 hp/198 Nm and a 2.4 with 179 hp/231 Nm. A six-speed manual is also available in China. We’ve driven this car in Aussie spec already – click here to read the report.

This K2 will complete Kia’s saloon range in China, which currently has the K5 and the larger Cadenza (K7). It will most probably come with 1.4L and 1.6L engines from the Hyundai-Kia pool, paired to a five-speed manual in the base spec. A check on Kia’s Chinese site reveals that the Forte isn’t sold there (although the Forte Koup is, badged as Shuma), so the K2′s role would be the “small saloon” of the family, replacing the Kia Rio.

Nissan Leaf start-up problems to be rectified

Nissan has said it will launch a voluntarily repair service campaign for its Leaf electric vehicle to address problems of some vehicles being unable to start, according to reports.

The company has received reports from Leaf owners where the car has failed to start, and will reprogram software in the Vehicle Control Module to address incorrect diagnosis programming.

Even though the glitch has only affected a small proportion of vehicles, Nissan says all 8,000 or so Leafs made in the US and Japan are covered by the repair service. The company says that this is not a safety-related issue (hence, it’s not officially tagged as a recall) and will not cause the vehicle to stop running while being driven, just that the car may not restart once it is off.
