2011 Perodua Myvi – bookings open from June 4

It looks like the launch of the new 2011 Perodua Myvi is around the corner – the company sent an email stating that it will begin accepting bookings for the new car from this Saturday, June 4. Unfortunately, the press release that was supposed to be attached wasn’t there in the mail, so we can’t say what other info there is on the release.

The car itself has already been spotted many times – in disguised form – out on the road, so the shape of the new form isn’t a stranger. What remains to be seen is whether a 1.5 litre version will come about with the D54T, as initially mentioned months ago. Guess the answers to all will be revealed soon enough.

Funny little things: New Tata Magic Iris and Ace Zip

Not sure if you remember that funny little penguin that was spotted back in 2009, but it has just been launched as the Tata Ace Zip in India. Together with covered sister Magic Iris, the duo look soft toy cute (to me at least) with their wide open eyes and odd proportions. Eyelashes will work well here, don’t you think?

Wait, it gets funnier. The one with the roof, Magic Iris, is described as a four-wheel, 3-4 seater small passenger carrier, a good alternative to those three-wheelers that are popular in India. The pick-up bodied Ace Zip on the other hand, is described by the press release as a 600-kg micro truck “for deep-penetration goods movement”. By the way, this is not Google Translate playing tricks, the release is in English. Deep penetration goods movement, I like!

Both are powered by a 611 cc, water cooled engine with 11 hp and 31 Nm of torque. Those wheels are 12-inch items. No performance figures are given, but the Ace Zip’s payload is 600 kg. Turning radius is a small 3.5 metres. The body is all steel, including the hard top and double steel sheet doors on the Magic Iris.

The Magic Iris is priced at Rs 1.95 lakh (about RM13,000) while the Ace Zip costs Rs 1.90 lakh, ex showroom Thane without octroi tax. They come with a warranty of 36,000 km or 12 months.

Tesla to end Roadster production, Model S out next year, 2014 Model X to combine SUV and MPV qualities

A filing with the the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission by public listed electric car maker Tesla has shed some light on future plans. There will be a prototype of a Model X crossover by the end of the year, and the company will end production of the Tesla Roadster in December this year, concentrating on a new platform series. Tesla has delivered 1,650 Roadsters to customers in over 31 countries to date.

According to Tesla, it is “designing the Model X to incorporate the functionality of a minivan with the consumer appeal of a sports-utility vehicle.” CEO Elon Musk has previously revealed in an interview that the Model X will debut in 2014.

When pitching to investors for its IPO last summer, Tesla said it wanted to build four derivatives from the Model S platform. First out will be a midsize sedan (the car pictured here, click here for gallery and video) followed by a convertible, a van and a crossover/SUV. From the latest plans, it looks like the latter two will be combined into one Model X.

As for the upcoming Model S sedan, customer deliveries are scheduled to start in mid-2012 and that there are several drivable prototypes already complete. Tesla is planning to make about 20,000 Model S per year, with prices ranging from $57,400-$77,400. As of end April 2011, the company has collected around 4,600 bookings with a minimum refundable payment of $5,000, the filing said.

“We anticipate that the initial units of the Model S will be introduced with a Signature Series, which will have range capability of 300 miles (480 km) and include certain colors and options, some of which may not be available in the general production of the Model S. We also plan to offer the capability to fast charge in as little as 45 minutes and the ability to rapidly swap out its battery pack at commercial charging stations,” it was revealed.

Aston Martin V12 Zagato makes track debut at Nürburgring

Just a week after the Aston Martin V12 Zagato was unveiled, the endurance race car concept has completed its first running under race conditions in the 53rd ADAC ACAS H&R-Cup VLN race at the Nürburgring. The V12 Zagato was joined in the race by four other Astons, including the factory supported V8 Vantage and V12 Vantage (nicknamed Smurf and Kermit).

The four-hour race alongside 150 other competitors served as preparation ahead of a two-car entry at the Nürburgring 24-hour race in late June. The new car experienced some inevitable teething issues, but most importantly the team accrued valuable data.

“For V12 Zagato today was all about working on our race setup and developing the car ahead of the 24-hour race. Clearly, the car is still in the very early stages of development having only been unveiled a week ago and it was important for us to take as much learning and data as possible from today and give our drivers chance to familiarise themselves with the car,” said Aston Martin’s Head of Motorsport, David King.

“In terms of our other runners, the V12 Vantage was very unfortunate to be caught up in an incident on the first lap but managed to limp to the pits where the team heroically made the necessary repairs to get it running and back in the race,” King added.

A modern interpretation of famous Aston Martin and Zagato collaborations such as the DB4GT Zagato, the V12 Zagato won the Concorso d’Eleganza Design Award for Concept Cars and Prototypes at the event where it made its debut – the Villa D’Este Concours on the shores of Lake Como.

Daihatsu to open R&D centre in Indonesia

Following on Daihatsu’s plans to make Indonesia a base for its business expansion, the automaker has announced that it will establish a research and development centre on the site of its new plant being built in the country.

The Nikkei again reports that the R&D facility will be set up after the factory is ready for operation at the end of next year. Daihatsu says it will gradually transfer over from Japan certain design functions for new vehicles as well as redesigned models produced locally. Some of the subsidiary’s 70 developers have begun training in Japan ahead of this.

Local subsidiary PT Astra Daihatsu Motor has just begun work on the plant, located on the outskirts of Jakarta on an 800,000 sq. m site. The plant will have an output capacity of 100,000 units a year, and is slated to build small cars for the local market as well as for export. It will also contain a test course.

No surprise that Daihatsu is focusing very much on Indonesia – the country is now the automaker’s largest overseas manufacturing base, and its annual production capacity has bumped up to 330,000 units this month in the country, up from 280,000.

Jaguar Land Rover opens its first Indian plant at Pune

Jaguar Land Rover has officially opened its first assembly plant in India last week. Located in Pune in the Maharashtra region, the facility will first assemble the Land Rover Freelander 2, supplied to it by in Complete Knock Down (CKD) form from JLR’s Halewood plant in the UK. It has the capacity to assemble 3,500 vehicles annually.

Two variants of the SUV will be available, the TD4 SE Automatic and the SD4 HSE Automatic. They’re now cheaper by Rs 2.5-3 lakh compared to previous fully imported CBU units.

According to the Tata owned company, the Pune facility (it’s not newly built, production line at the Tata owned building was earlier used by Mercedes) will be subject to JLR’s mainstream launch quality processes and will be overseen by experienced manufacturing and quality managers who have moved to India from the UK.

“Today marks a significant step in our growth strategy for the Indian market. The opening of this plant demonstrates close co-operation between the parent company Tata Motors and Jaguar Land Rover and we are keen to develop this further,” said Carl-Peter Forster, CEO and MD of parent company Tata Motors.

JLR is also planning a new £400 million engine plant in India, supposedly a “carbon copy” of a facility JLR has already announced for for the UK. It will churn out four-cylinder engines that are modular in design and up to 2.0 litres in capacity.

Hyundai reaches five million unit milestone in Europe

Hyundai has reached the five million vehicles sold milestone in Europe, 34 years after the first Hyundai Pony was imported in 1977. The five millionth vehicle was an i30, a Golf class hatchback launched in 2007. Hyundai has shifted over 320,000 units of the i30 across Europe since then.

The momentum only picked up strongly in recent times. It took until 1996 before Hyundai recorded its first million sales, but the last one million was achieved in just three years. The two millionth car was sold in 2001, three millionth in 2005 and four millionth in 2008. For 27 consecutive months up to March 2011, Hyundai has outperformed the market sales trend in Europe. Its 2010 market share stands at 2.6%.

Designed for Europe. it was the introduction of the i30 in 2007, the first of the company’s products to carry the ‘i’ prefix, that started the recent climb. The i30 was soon followed by the i10 and i20 supermini, and more recently the ix20 compact MPV and ix35 SUV (Tucson to us).

“Hitting five million is a wonderful achievement for Hyundai, but this is just the beginning for the brand. We are planning for further sales growth during 2011, to take us to 3% market share. And in the longer term we expect the quality and desirability of our cars to help us maintain our momentum and deliver our next five million sales in a much shorter time frame,” said Allan Rushforth, Senior VP and COO of Hyundai Motor Europe.

Output from Hyundai’s manufacturing plant in Nošovice, Czech Republic increases this year to 300,000 units, even as its European R&D centre in Germany leads the company’s work on diesel technology.

Petrov Monaco crash: No swelling and no broken bones

One of the big moments in yesterday’s Monaco GP was when the leading trio of Vettel, Alonso and Button caught up with a group of cars fighting among themselves on lap 68. They were Maldonado, Sutil, Hamilton, Petrov and Alguersuari. They all came together at the Swimming Pool, where Sutil and Hamilton damaged their cars while Petrov and Alguersuari crashed out. The leaders scrambled past the melee.

While Toro Rosso’s young Spaniard walked away immediately unhurt, Vitaly Petrov was clearly hurt in his Lotus Renault R31. The safety car was out, and the ambulance too, which drove the Russian to Princess Grace hospital. While Vitaly complained about his left ankle to the medical crew, no fracture had been diagnosed at the circuit and further checks in the hospital revealed no swelling or broken bones.

When asked, the LRGP driver said: “I’m fine, thank you. It’s been a big crash but I’m ok. First of all, I would like to thank all my fans for all their well wishes, the medical teams at the circuit, the hospital for their efficient and friendly assistance, and the team for their concern.

“After the impact, I could not feel my legs very well. I thought it was best for the medical team to assist with removing me from the car as it was difficult for me to move and my legs were trapped in the cockpit. I did not lose consciousness but I was in quite a lot of pain when I was inside the car,” he explained.

Good to hear that he’s fine. The crashes over the weekend is a testament to the safety of today’s F1 cars.

Angry Lewis Hamilton blasts stewards and fellow drivers

Wasn’t yesterday’s race the most eventful Monaco GP we’ve seen in recent times? Lewis Hamilton contributed generously to the cause and was punished by the stewards for his efforts. The McLaren man was given a drive-through penalty for causing an avoidable incident with Felipe Massa while the pair fought for 10th place. He later collided with Williams’ Pastor Maldonado, denying the rookie his first points of the season.

The very angry man blasted the stewards when the TV cameras ambushed him after the race. “Out of six races, I’ve been to the stewards five times. It’s a joke. It’s an absolute frickin’ joke,” he told the BBC. When asked why he thought stewards had been paying attention to his driving this year, he joked: “Maybe it’s because I’m black. That’s what Ali G says. I don’t know.”

“I was quite a lot quicker than Massa. I went up the inside, and the guy turned so early and just turned into me. So I tried to go over the kerb to avoid him and we were stuck together. And of course I get the penalty, which is usual. He held me up in qualifying and I got the penalty. He turned into me, and I got the penalty,” Lewis added. Can you feel the anger?

There’s more. Here’s his piece of mind about the Maldonado incident: “I went up the inside of Maldonado and you can see on the screen that he turned in a good car length too early to stop me overtaking him and he crashed into me. It’s just ridiculous. These drivers are absolutely frickin’ ridiculous. Just stupid,” Lewis blasted.

“People want to see my racing, want to see overtaking and [then] you get done for trying to overtake. You get done trying to put on a show. You get done trying to make a move. Fair play, if I really feel that I’ve gone too late and hit someone, I’ll put my hand up and realise [that] I really have caused an incident and I’ve been the stupid one, but it is not the case [today],” he ended.

This has to be THE outburst of the season so far. Can you feel the anger?
