Mazda SkyActiv-G 1.3 DI engine – first one to arrive

Mazda SkyActiv-G 1.3 DI engine – first one to arriveMazda has announced that a direct-injection 1.3 litre gasoline engine called the SkyActiv-G 1.3 will be the first market example to feature its next-generation SkyActiv technologies. It is set to unveil the mill at the Automotive Engineering Exposition on May 18-20 at the Pacifico Yokohama convention center near Tokyo, Japan.

The company plans to introduce the SkyActiv-G 1.3 domestically in the facelifted Demio (Mazda2) soon, making it the first ever 1.3 litre direct-injection gasoline engine to be equipped in a compact car built in Japan. It will offer 84 PS at 5,400 rpm and 112 Nm at 4,000 rpm for output.

The breakthrough block features a record high compression ratio (for a regular gasoline mass production automobile engine) of 14.0:1 and exhibits high efficiency, especially under high load at low rpm. In order to avoid knocking – an unavoidable issue with conventional high-compression engines – the unit features a number of new technologies, such as piston cavities that are specially designed to support ideal combustion, and multi-hole injectors that enable precise fuel injection control.

Other features include a cooled EGR system and Mazda’s first dual sequential valve timing system (dual S-VT with electronically-operated intake) – in combination with the high compression ratio, this achieves an unconventional Miller cycle (extremely delayed closure of intake valves) that improves efficiency. It also has 30% less mechanical friction, due to a narrower crankshaft, new roller followers and low-tension piston rings that also reduce oil consumption.

Partnered with i-stop, Mazda’s unique idling stop system, and a continuously variable transmission (CVT), the lump – with more than 130 patents applied for it – promises a fuel economy of 30 km per litre (under Japan’s 10-15 mode test cycle).

I wonder what minimum octane it requires.

dont worry, even ron95 is going up….so no harm if need to fill in with ron 97

    • According to GoAuto Australia, Mazda would produce a 13:1 compression ratio Skyactiv engine for Australian market as their minimun fuel octane is at ron 91.
So i don’t see why can’t the normal 14:1 compression ratio Skyactiv use ron 95.

If a car able to fill in 30 liter, the car able to run 900km!!!This is great and can cut government subsidy…

that’s true, it has about 10% less power but almost double the fuel economy!

come on..the fuel efficiency is calculated using test cycle not true road test calculation

weak power for a latest engine……
but if even we dont get 30km/l as claimed, 20km/l is still fantastic for the real world driving, thats at least 750-850km on a tank

Great to see engines getting smaller, but more powerful and yet more frugal!!

rival such as toyota have 1.3 with 101hp already…

and paul… skyactiv g already available in canada …

  • quite Impressive. Honda fit scores for only 24km/l under japan’s 10-15 mode test cycle.

You don’t even need to get VW cars for Direct Injections any more :)

the output of the engine is so lousy
    campro iafm 1.3L can make
    98hp @ 6000rpm
    120nm @ 4000rpm

98hp is the actual value for campro iafm, 94hp for campro, they keep 94hp for consistent, read it during saga launch

      • I don;t understand why ppl solely look at the figure of hp. If you put these 2 cars together, I m 100% sure you will feel more power from Mazda 2 than the campro engine. and we dont even need to mention about the fuel consumption here.

campro doesnt have a fuel efficiency of 30km/liter rite, plus m2 is a small car,i m sure the power to weight ratio can be matched.campro is a crappy engine.

With $200 oil coming soon i think this is very smart thinking. I would guess its less than 100 CO2 ?……thus Road Tax free in the UK. The cost to produce this engine will be about the same as normal 1.3……………….low CO2 engines normally require a Turbo (look at Fiat Twin 900cc )

no point if it’s fuel efficient but that price of the car itself is already expensive in Malaysia

Expensive?? I thought Mazda 2 is even cheaper than the overpriced City and Vios?? How much cheaper you want? By the look of it, why pay closed to 100K for an Insight…

it make no sense here if it were to be fitted in a budget car as it’ll most probably require the “premium” RON97 to run.. 14:1 compression ratio..

mazda has this habit of under declaring thier engines…..they tend to give figures thats on wheel instead of the crank and hence the much lower outputs..i but i know this for a fact as the dyno charts on my mazda 6 spits out the same power as stated on the brochure … a check on a friend’s cx7 came out only 2 hp less than stated so this has to be the case….. its weird for the marketing team to do so but i rather know what kind of power i ‘really’ have…..

its gonna be a crackin engine…i rather have an engine thats drivable rather than one thats so powerful and peaky…my commute to work is not a track day unlike some others tend to think so i rather have a car that puts its power down to the road really well..the sky engines are gonna be a cracker….

if only mazda decides to go into turbo or superchargers
that’ll make the engine an even bigger cracker with a very efficient engine to boot.
i own a mazda 3 too, and seriously the power it gives feels more than the understated figures in the brochure.

This engine can go up to 34 km/l for the future production. For the time being, since Mazda introduce this engine to already existing Demio (minor change only), it can go just 30 km/l.

The SKYACTIV technology will involve 4-2-1 exchaust system, SKYACTIV-Body and SKYACTIV-Chassis. But that all will be into the future model.

The current model is developed for Japan market, which is RON91. Later model will be for RON95.

I get this info from the japanese website.
