Mazda to part production ways with Ford in the US

Mazda is in talks with Ford to stop joint production in the US by 2013, the Nikkei reports, paving the way for it to go the North American route alone as it goes about rebuilding its US business, which has stuttered of late.

It currently produces the Mazda6 at the AutoAlliance International plant in Michigan, its equal partnership venture with Ford, but with US production at well less than half the planned levels, Mazda is looking at letting go its stake in the JV to Ford. The Japanese automaker built just 45,000 vehicles in the US in the year ended March, though its production capacity at the AAI plant is 120,000 vehicles a year.

Ford is anticipated to maintain production at the plant by increasing the number of models it produces there, when the proposed change eventually takes place.

Mazda will be looking at supplying US demand through Japanese production at its Hofu plant and from its future assembly location in Mexico. It has plans to construct a JV plant with Sumitomo Corp there, and intends to eventually also supply Latin America with automobiles produced at the Mexican plant. The plans are part of a review of the carmaker’s global production system and rebuilding of its US operations.

Skoda Fabia RS2000 roadster blows the lid off things

You can always count on the annual Volkswagen festival, the GTI-Treffen, which is held annually in Lake Wörthersee, Austria to provide a healthy blitz of unique treats, and the 30th anniversary of the event was no exception – withness the likes of the Audi A1 Clubsport Quattro and the VW Golf R Cabriolet Concept as proof of that.

Skoda wasn’t to be outdone. The company displayed a Fabia RS 2000 design concept especially prepared for the event. Using the Super 2000 rally Fabia as inspiration, the Skoda boys took a Fabia RS, lopped off the roof, slapped on some widebody arches and corresponding bits, as well as reworked the interior to come up with this topless rendition

The kitbag for the one-off includes seating for four in individual bucket seats replete with racing harnesses, 18-inch alloys in white and a sharply sloping windscreen. Plenty of air in your hair with this one, and no one can ever accuse you of not going green with this one at that.

Juho Hanninen wins IRC Yalta Rally, no returns for Proton

The reigning champion of the Intercontinental Rally Challenge (IRC) has become the series’ most successful driver after winning the Prime Yalta Rally in Ukraine. Skoda’s Juho Hanninen now has seven wins under his belt, one more than Belgian Freddy Loix. The win also puts the Finn back on top of the IRC drivers’ standings and Skoda ahead of Peugeot in the manufacturers’ race.

Peugeot’s Bryan Bouffier came in second, ahead of Hanninen’s Skoda teammate, Czech driver Jan Kopecky. In the standings, Hanninen has 58 points, three more than Kopecky and nine points more than Bouffier, so there’s still plenty to play for. The top five are only separated by 13 points.

In Ukraine, Hanninen looked good for the win going into Saturday’s final six stages. He led Bouffier by 8.2s at that point. The Frenchman pulled it back to 5.1s at the midmorning service halt but the Finn charged his way to victory after that. For Kopecky, a less than confident stage 11 had allowed Andreas Mikkelsen (Skoda) to threaten his third place but successive stage wins in the afternoon cancelled out the Norwegian threat.

No points for Proton, who had to see Giandomenico Basso retire with engine damage. After running as high as fifth, the Italian reached Friday night’s service in 10th overall, but didn’t continue on Saturday. Oil pressure issues forced out PG Andersson on Friday.

The third Proton driven by local heroes Oleksandr Saliuk Sr and Evgen Chervonenko finished third in the Ukrainian National Rally Championship. The former USSR Rally Champion was a big draw at Yalta, drawing thousands to the event and even Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych to the Proton camp! Apparently, the Neo S2000′s fetching looks got plenty of media attention and Proton’s merchandise was sold out, so there’s some consolation to be had.

The next IRC event is the Ypres Rally in Belgium from 23 to 25 June.

Dany Bahar: If we couldn’t afford it, we wouldn’t do it

Group Lotus has been making the headlines regularly of late. We were there to witness the Proton owned brand’s five car blast at last year Paris show, which will now be financed by a £270 million loan from a group of six Malaysian banks. Of course, there’s also the entry into F1 via title sponsorship of Renault, and the bitter legal battle and name tussle with Tony Fernandes’ Team Lotus.

Gone are the days where the British brand quietly made sportscars in Hethel to a small enthusiast audience; they’re now preparing to join the big league and do battle with the likes of Porsche. They’re also looking at (finally) making profit for loyal owner Proton.

The man behind this major transformation plan is ex-Ferrari marketing man Dany Bahar. Here, the 39-year old CEO of Group Lotus talks about the relationship between Lotus and Proton, extending the life of the Evora, a new self-developed engine and of course, the war with Team Lotus.

Bahrain is back in 2011 F1 calendar, India is now last race

The 2011 Bahrain GP has been reinstated and will take place on October 30, FIA’s World Motor Sport Council (WMSC) announced on Friday. In the original F1 calendar, that date was scheduled for the first ever Indian GP, which will now be the season finale on December 11 and venue of the FIA Annual General Assembly and Prize-Giving Gala.

If you remember, Bahrain was supposed to be this season’s opening race on March 13, but the wave of civil unrest and uprising the hit the Arab world saw it being postponed. The on/off decision was to be made early May, but the island state asked for a later deadline from the FIA.

“Following a fact-finding mission undertaken at the request of FIA President Jean Todt, FIA Vice President Carlos Gracia visited Bahrain on 31 May 2011 to assess the situation in the country,” read an FIA statement.

“Meetings were conducted with the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the Bahrain Motor Federation and Bahrain International Circuit, as well as other national and international organisations including Mr. Tariq Al Saffar at the National Institute of Human Rights. It should be noted that the recent announcement by the King of Bahrain has established a political dialogue and reconciliation process.

“This decision reflects the spirit of reconciliation in Bahrain, which is evident from the strong support the race receives from the Government and all major parties in Bahrain, including the largest opposition group, all of whom endorse the Formula One Grand Prix and motor sport in the country.

“The WMSC feels that reinstating the Grand Prix is a means of helping to unite people as the country looks to move forward, and also recognises the commitment made by the Formula One teams, their employees and families, and personnel associated with the Championship including the local team of volunteers who are so vital to the event,” it added.

The decision to reinstate Bahrain means that this season’s F1 calendar will have an unprecedented 20 rounds and will end on December 11. The teams aren’t happy with it, as are human rights activists.

2011 Perodua Myvi spotted being trailered in the night

We thought that yesterday’s posting of two lightly disguised Myvis would be the last of the new 2011 Myvi spyshots before the car’s launch this month, but it looks like we were wrong! Reader Syed Adam snapped a few photos of this trailer transporting a few units of the new 2011 Perodua Myvi without any disguise on them, although we can’t see much anyway as the photo was snapped at night.

I suppose that these Myvis are being trailered to dealerships across Malaysia. There should be many Perodua dealerships with the new Myvi in their compound by now, although I think with strict instructions for them to be covered up before the launch. That probably won’t stop the dealerships from lifting the covers a little if you’re a serious buyer that wants to place a booking though.

Look after the jump for four photos of the trailer.

2012 BMW 1-Series pictures leaked on the internet

The first official product photos of the new generation 2012 BMW 1-Series have found their way onto the internet.

It actually reminds me of a modernized E46 ti compact, with a peculiar choice of styling at the front end, mostly because of the decision to make the lower edge of the headlamps slope sharply upwards towards the kidney grilles.

As a result, there seems to be lots of body surface in between the headlamps and the kidney grille – a trait not usually found on any other modern BMW other than the BMW 5-Series GT. If you recall, the E46 ti also had weird headlamps.

At the rear, the design is an evolution of the current 1-Series hatchback. The car pictured here is the 120d, which has a single round chrome tipped exhaust pipe.

The side character lines of the body no longer features that droopy slope found on the current 1-er, which in my opinion looks much better.

Now, the lower character line only slopes up towards the rear wheel arch – before this the line sloped up towards both front and rear wheel arches giving the impression that the car was sagging under its weight.

The interior features a similar iDrive display panel design as first seen on the new 6-series. The instrumentation cluster is of a dual meter design, with the fuel gauge integrated into the lower half of the speedometer.

There seems to be a black panel style multi-info display at the bottom of the RPM meter.

Look after the jump for the rest of the leaked pix.

2011 Perodua Myvi – last of the spyshots before launch?

New photos of the upcoming 2011 Perodua Myvi have come about – two examples, in white, were snapped near the company’s home base in Sungai Choh, presumably carrying out some final evaluation exercises.

The photos are the clearest of the new car so far, and the cars are seen wearing very little disguise – at the front, the emblem and fog lamps are covered with white tape, likewise at the back, with the emblem and rear fog lamps getting the same treatment, and the rear lamps are covered with minor cladding.

Essentially, this should be the last set of spyshots of the Myvi, which should be launched into the market very soon, given that bookings for the car are officially set to begin tomorrow, which means the launch can’t be too far away!

Another day, another topless star – Audi R8 GT Spyder

Another day, another topless star. No, we’re not referring to a certain Gossip Girl but the equally hot Audi R8 GT Spyder. How hot? This Spyder is a open-top version of the R8 GT unveiled last year, so it has 560 hp and 540 Nm of torque, as opposed to the “standard” R8 V10′s 525 hp/530 Nm. 0-100 km/h is done in 3.8 seconds on its way to a 317 km/h top speed.

It’s not just more power, though. At 1,640 kg, the R8 GT Spyder is 85 kg lighter than its base car, the R8 Spyder 5.2 FSI quattro and just 15 kg heavier than the R8 GT. The Audi Space Frame (ASF) body, consisting of cast nodes, extruded sections and aluminum panels, accounts for just 214 kg of the total weight.

The engine frame is made of magnesium and the long cover over the soft-top compartment and the large side panels at the rear are made of carbon fiber-reinforced polymer. CFRP is also used for the modified front spoiler, the fixed rear spoiler and the new rear bumper. Together, all these saved 5.5 kg.

Inside, the bucket seats alone, with their chassis of glass fiber-reinforced polymer, saved 31.5 kg. As to not waste their efforts, I’d skip that banana leaf lunch if I was driving one of these!

The fabric soft top with its electrohydraulic drive transforms the car in 19 seconds, at speeds of up to 50 km/h. The extendible glass rear window is nestled in the bulkhead, separate from the soft top. Integrated in the bulkhead is a rollover protection system comprising two pretensioned plates.

The quattro permanent AWD has a strong rear-wheel bias, granted by the axle load distribution. If the situation calls for it, the system sends additional torque to the front axle. The gearbox is an automated six-speed R tronic transmission.

The interior is black and can be had with titanium gray or crimson stitching. Alcantara is found on the sport steering wheel and windshield frame. Unique details to look out for include white dials and R8 GT logos. The distinctive R8 “monoposto,” a large arch encircling the driver’s cockpit, is made of matt CFRP.

Not just hot, but exclusive as well – the R8 GT Spyder is limited to just 333 units.
