Kia Sportage launched in Malaysia, rolls in at RM138,888

Naza Kia Malaysia today launched the all-new Kia Sportage; the SUV – which was teased last week – was unveiled at the KLCC earlier this evening. Rolling in at RM138,888 (on-the-road, with insurance), the Sportage is well set to take the fight to the competition within its price segment.

For one, the vehicle finally has the looks to do so – where the previous Sportage, which was facelifted last April, was a very functional and practical offering, its looks were kind of utilitarian, to put it simply. The new offering, with its more urban and fluid silhouette, changes the ballgame considerably – very much a looker, this is in essence a scaled-down version of the Sorento.

With a high belt line, sweeping angles and pronounced wheel flares, the design conveys a modern and athletic appearance, so it goes. Its full-sectioned body is defined by a spearing shoulder line throughout the length of the car, which visually connects the headlamps and tail lights.

In keeping things in line with the family look, the vehicle – which is longer, wider and lower than its predecessor – features Kia’s signature grille, and the 18-inch alloy wheels (rather bling, like the Optima’s) and 235/55 series tyres help lend the SUV even more presence.

It’s not just looks with this one though; the new Sportage features increased levels of performance, efficiency, comfort, convenience as well as loads of equipment and tech.

The Sportage is powered by a Theta II 2.0 petrol engine which features dual CVVT (continuous variable valve timing), and the mill – offering 166 PS and 197 Nm of torque – is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.

Other than continuous variable valve timing on both intake and exhaust, the engine also features a Variable Intake System which uses a long runner at low RPM and a short runner at high RPM to optimise intake airflow.

It wears an All-Wheel Drive (AWD) system which continuously monitors driving conditions and anticipates AWD system requirements – during normal driving conditions, the AWD system delivers 100% of engine torque to the front wheels to enhance fuel economy. However, when wheel slippage is detected, a certain percentage of engine torque is transferred to the rear wheels.

There is also a four-wheel drive (4WD) lock mode, with the torque split up to a maximum rear bias of 50:50 for low traction surfaces. This 4WD lock mode automatically disengages above speeds of 30km/h to return to automatic mode.

In terms of ride and handling, the Sportage features MacPherson struts at the front suspension and a multi-link rear suspension as well as an amplitude selective damper, which facilitates instant reaction in wheel movement and maintains optimal damping and level quality, and offers more precise road contact, better ride comfort and increased handling precision, Kia says.

Inside the cabin, features include full leather seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, push-start ignition, leather seats, dual-zone temperature control air-conditioner (with ionised filtration), an illuminated and cooled glove box as well as an eight-way electronically powered seat for the driver. Oh, and let’s not forget a panoramic sunroof, which can be partially retracted.

Other items on the list are a six-CD changer with a seven speaker system (two tweeters, four midrange units and a subwoofer) as well as AUX, USB, iPod (cable included, we hear) and Bluetooth connectivity, integrated LED turn signals on the side mirrors, a rear view camera display on the rear view mirror, auto headlights, electronic chromic mirror, a rear parking assist system and auto cruise control.

Besides LED daytime running lights, the Sportage features what Kia calls headlamp escort, otherwise known as get-me-home lighting, whereby the headlamps remain turned on for 30 seconds after the engine has been turned off.

In terms of safety, the five-star Euro NCAP rated Sportage comes with six airbags, ABS, EBD, downhill brake control, hill-start assist control, cornering brake control, brake assist system and a traction control system. It also comes with a 5 year warranty, which Naza Kia says is fully backed by the manufacturer and not a manufacturer + extended insurance warranty plan.

Five colours are available for the SUV, which are techno orange, sand track, mineral silver, bright silver and clear white. Naza Kia is targeting monthly sales of 200 units a month for the Sportage, which is quite conservative given what the SUV is, and offers.

Ford Fiesta 1.6 LX sedan upgraded – now with Bluetooth, USB and seven airbags, RM81,388

News is about that sometime from the end of the month on, the Ford Fiesta 1.6 LX sedan will be available in slightly upgraded form, featuring a few new items on the equipment list. An example of the type was on show at the recent Ford roadshow at Sunway Pyramid.

Bluetooth capability and USB are now included, and that also means the addition of a steering wheel control, which wasn’t on the original sedan. The most significant inclusion is with the Safety Pack, which means the LX sedan will now come with seven airbags (driver, passenger, side, curtains as well as knee), a jump from the single one previously.

In line with this, the pricing for the sedan has been increased from RM78,888 to RM81,388 (on-the-road, with insurance), a jump of RM2,500 – it will only be available in this guise from now on. Aside from these new bits, the rest of the car remains as before – the sedan still comes shod with 15-inch alloys, and without the higher-grade fabric seats, leather steering wheel and fog lights as found on the Sport hatchback, so it’s not tagged as a ‘high-specification’ model, but rather as an upgraded variant.

Meanwhile, word is that the limited-run XTR Sapphire edition hatchback – in blue and white exterior colour choices – is set to make its debut sometime in July, replete with the blue-coded fabric interior, seven airbags, bodykit and transfers as noted previously, with indicative pricing being RM88,888, a 6k premium over the Sport.

Renault Mégane R.S. 265 Trophy sets a new FWD lap record of 8’08” at the Nürburgring

Records are meant to be broken, and with that do we come to a new one set by Renault’s latest wunderkind, the Mégane R.S. 265 Trophy. The car has set a new lap record for a front-wheel drive production car at the Nürburgring, almost three years to the day the Mégane R26.R established its lap record for a FWD production car at the Nordschleife in June 2008, with a time of 8 minutes 17 seconds.

Last week, the R.S. 265 Trophy clocked 8 minutes 8 seconds to break the R26.R‘s record, which has stood since then. The time posted at the Nürburgring puts the Mégane R.S. Trophy on par with an extremely prestigious list of supercars, with a level of performance rivalling that of vehicles with power outputs of up to and beyond 500 hp.

“The Nordschleife is a legendary course. Its difficulties are extremely varied, ranging from fast and even very fast in places to much twistier and slower portions. Turns like ‘Karusell’ and ‘Pflanzgarten’, for example, make huge demands of the car and driver alike, yet the Mégane R.S. Trophy is very much in its element here and feels particularly reassuring despite the uncompromising nature of the terrain,” said Laurent Hurgon, development driver at Renault Sport, who took the R.S. 265 Trophy out on its record-setting lap.

“The limited slip differential allowed me to accelerate hard out of the countless turns without understeer. The carefully-tuned Cup chassis, the dampers, the fade-resistant brakes, the Recaro seats, the power of the 265 hp engine, the ready availability of torque between 2,500 and 5,000rpm and the car’s Bridgestone RE 050A (235/35 R19) tyres allowed me to make the most of the car’s enormous potential, especially into and out of the corners. It is this package which enabled me to post such a quick time round this circuit, which you must always approach with a certain degree of humility,” he added.

Japan setting out to get its own GPS off the ground

Some GPS-related news. The Japanese government – with the the assistance of private firms – is ramping up research on a Japanese version of the Global Positioning System in a bid to turn satellite-based technologies into a key export, the Nikkei reports.

Plans are afoot to conduct joint reserach and development on this – nine firms and two organisations are slated to participate in a study group to be formed by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry at the end of the month, with an aim to come up with new services in five years, the report says.

The venture will include companies such as NEC and Mitsubishi Electric Corp, which develop satellites or ground facilities, as well as those with a broad range of businesses, including transport systems, logistics and machinery.

Having launched a quasi-zenith positioning satellite last September, the addition of two or three more satellites will enable an around-the-clock service, though specific plans for the second satellite haven’t been drawn up yet. The Japanese satellite system is designed to supplement the GPS currently operated by the US, and is meant to cover the region, including that of Southeast Asia and Australia.

A domestic GPS would yield many benefits beyond just making and launching satellites – with a projection that the overall market will grow from around four trillion yen in 2008 to roughly 10 trillion yen in 2013, a wide range of infrastructure-related fields will stand to grow as well.

Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG powerslides for 2,308 metres – Mauro Calo sets new world record for longest car drift

Driving a stock Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG, Mauro Calo has set a new world record for the longest car drift at the Mercedes-Benz World in Surrey, UK. Calo smashed the existing world record by 394 metres, drifting a total distance of 2,308 metres to add his name to the record books.

To achieve the record breaking distance, Calo chose part of the Handling Circuit at Mercedes-Benz World – the circuit provided a complete 360 degree circle of tarmac which saw him complete almost eight laps.

Calo, a precision stunt driver and senior driving specialist for Mercedes-Benz and McLaren SLR, broke the record set in 2009 by 2010 Formula Drift champion Vaughan Gittin Jr.

Lotus Cars enters China – Lotus China Symphony appointed as official distributor

Lotus Cars has begun its move into the Chinese market – the company has appointed Lotus China Symphony as the official Lotus Cars distributor for the country.

Beijing-based Lotus China Symphony – or known as Lotus China, if you will – will carry the full range of Lotus models for the Chinese market, these being the Evora, the Elise and the Exige. It has put in an initial order for 100 cars, with the Evora accounting for the majority of these first customer cars, with the remainder being Elise and Exige units.

Lotus China will open its first dealership in the capital in October, followed by dealerships in Shanghai, Chongqing and Guangzhou later in the year. Eight further dealerships are planned for 2012, and plans are underway to prepare for the arrival of the new Lotus models, starting with the Esprit in 2013.

Nissan Grand Livina Tuned by Impul premieres

It’s less than two weeks since the launch of facelifted Nissan Grand Livina took place, but a new variant of the type has arrived, and it’s called the Grand Livina Tuned By Impul. The vehicle made its debut yesterday in Sepang, in conjunction with the Super GT International Series 2011 at the SIC.

The boys at Impul have dressed up the Grand Livina with a newly designed aerokit, with a front grille that wears the brand new Impul logo. Mechanically, the vehicle gets an Impul suspension system consisting of upgraded shock absorbers and springs that lower the ride height by 25 mm.

Elsewhere, there’s a high quality stainless steel exhaust muffler and a tailpipe bearing an etched Impul logo. Rounding things off are Impul Aura SX-10 17-inch polished alloy wheels, which are 20 to 30% lighter than conventional alloys thanks to Impul’s New Super Cast manufacturing process.

The Tuned By Impul version can be had for all GL model versions, and adds RM10,700 above that for the standard Grand Livina, so the on-the-road price (inclusive of insurance, road tax, registration fee and ownership claim fee, for Peninsular Malaysia) is RM97,500 for the 1.6 MT Comfort, RM100,500 for the 1.6 AT Comfort and RM109,500 for the 1.8 AT Comfort. The Impul parts will also be available to existing Grand Livina owners, so fret not if you would like to add them on.

Jaguar XF and XJ 3.0 litre Diesel S variants in town

They’ve rolled in quietly, without any fanfare, and they’re doing very well indeed. Jaguar’s diesel variants of the XF and XJ have begun selling in Malaysia, and both Diesel S jobs are pretty much being snapped up the moment they arrive.

Both the XF and XJ diesels are similarly equipped with a AJ-V6D Gen III S 3.0 litre turbodiesel mill, offering 271 hp at 4,000 rpm and 600 Nm at 2,000 rpm, mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.

Performance-wise, the lump is listed as giving both models an identical 0-100 kph time of 6.4 seconds and a 250 kph electronically-limited top speed (the cars weigh in at around the same, and in fact the XF is heavier at 1,820 kg to the XJ’s 1,813 kg).

Pricing-wise, the XF Diesel S rolls in at RM499,888, which is just a shade above the 3.0 V6 petrol version’s RM488,888, while the XJ Premium Luxury LWB Diesel S is priced at RM699,888, a very enticing alternative to the 5.0 Premium Luxury V8 petrol variant, considering its asking price is loads lower than the latter’s RM958,888.

Some notes on the XF – the Diesel S isn’t the facelifted version of the car, but the news is that the 2011 model year XF should be arriving on these shores soon. XF fans will of course have to be very patient for the new 187 hp 2.2 litre option of the car to arrive here.

Top five finishes for Jazeman Jaafar at Brands Hatch

A fourth place finish in the first race, fifth place in the second race and a storming drive from a tenth position start to fourth place at the chequered flag in the third and final race at Brands Hatch in Kent over the weekend has kept Jazeman Jaafar in the championship hunt of the 2011 Cooper Tires Formula 3 International Series after four events.

The first race on Saturday afternoon featured ever-changing weather conditions. The race started on a wet track, after a sudden shower just before the cars went to the grid, with all the teams opting to start on wet tyres.

Jaafar, one of the six drivers racing with the championship-winning Carlin team, maintained position in the first half of the race and then, along with the majority of the drivers, opted to pit for slick tyres when the track dried. The Petronas-backed Malaysian dropped to seventh after his stop, but fought back to cross the line in fourth place.

The second race of the weekend, in dry conditions, saw Jaafar off the line cleanly and into sixth position, but a start line shunt behind brought out the safety car for five laps to clear the stricken cars. Having used up half the time available for racing, it left few laps for Jaafar to improve on his position, and in the end he finished fifth.

In the last race, a torrential shower prior to the start meant wet tyres, and Jaafar once again showed his prowess in the wet conditions – starting in tenth, he’d moved up to eighth spot by the end of lap one and was up to sixth by half distance, eventually finishing fourth.

“It’s been a good weekend, but all three races were pretty tricky, especially the last one when we had a torrential downpour in the middle of it, so I’m pleased with that result and to have finished all three races in the top five,” said Jaafar. “I’m lying fourth in the overall drivers’ championship, just one point off Carlos Huertas in third, so we’re mixing it at the front.”

The fifth of ten events in the British F3 International Series takes place at the Nurburging on July 2–3.
