Nissan-Mitsubishi minicar joint venture underway

The new joint venture between Nissan and Mitsubishi Motors Corporation to develop minicars for the Japanese market has gotten underway – NMKV Co, which is based in Takanawa, Minato Ward, Tokyo, commenced operations on June 1, 2011, with 35 employees.

The new company will integrate the product planning and engineering of future minicars for Nissan and Mitsubishi in the Japanese market by uniting the strengths of both companies in the areas of vehicle engineering, development and parts sourcing, as part of an overall strategy to bring new minicar products to market.

More than a third of new car sales in the Japanese market come from the minicar segment, and the JV will enable Nissan to continue development of products that reflect Nissan’s DNA at the design and product planning phases, and benefit Mitsubishi by supplying highly-competitive products to its product line-up and by offering increased economies of scale advantages through Nissan’s purchasing capacity, the companies said.

Proton wins Rally De Nouvelle Caledonia – Chris Atkinson takes top honours again, Alister McRae finished third

After the heartbreak in Australia, Proton has returned to winning ways in the Asia Pacific Rally Championship (APRC), winning the Rally De Nouvelle Caledonie. Chris Atkinson and co-driver Stephane Prevot took the Satria Neo S2000 to victory in the third round of the APRC, finished ahead of Pertamina Cusco Racing’s Rifat Sungkar in a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X.

Teammate Alister McRae capped off a successful weekend in New Caledonia with a hard-fought third place, after having conceded his early lead in the rally due to a puncture and broken driveshaft. The result mirrors that of the Malaysian Rally, the opening round of the championship.

“It’s a phenomenal result for Proton – the entire team and for Stephane and I personally. Our rally wasn’t exactly trouble free, especially with a broken driveshaft on day 2, but we were lucky we had built a big enough gap to have it replaced and still hang on to the lead,” said Atkinson.

Atkinson moves into the lead of the APRC Driver’s Championship with 58 points, just two ahead of McRae. In third place is Team MRF’s Gaurav Gill, who retired in New Caledonia. McRae also reclaims the top spot in the Asia Cup Driver’s Championship ahead of Gill.

Victory in New Caledonia saw Proton claiming not only the overall victory, but also top honours amongst the APRC contenders, finishing first in the Pacific Cup and clinching the APRC Team Trophy at the event.

A further bonus for Proton came from Karamjit Singh, who won the Two-Wheel Drive Category in a 1600cc Satria Neo, extending his lead in the Driver’s Championship and Proton’s in the Manufacturer’s Championship. Karamjit finished ninth overall in the rally.

“Two victories in three rounds of the APRC certainly prove the competitiveness of the Satria Neo S2000. We’ve endured our fair share of misfortunes and mechanical issues, but the car has nevertheless proven time and time again that it is able to take on the more powerful turbocharged cars and more importantly, win rallies,” said Proton’s managing director Datuk Seri Syed Zainal Abidin.

“We have channeled a lot of effort towards development in terms of achieving both greater performance and reliability since the last rally in Australia and this has indeed paid dividends here in New Caledonia. This is a big step forward and with all the mechanical issues hopefully behind us, we now look forward to our next immediate event, which is the Ypres Rally in Belgium in the Intercontinental Rally Challenge (IRC) and New Zealand in the APRC,” he added.

“Monster” Tajima looks for win No 11 at Pikes Peak

By the looks of it, as long as he’s able to, Nobuhiro “Monster” Tajima won’t ever give up doing Pikes Peak. The 60-year-old Suzuki rally legend will of course be in Colorado this coming weekend to defend his title as King of the Mountain at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.

Tajima has been a fixture at the event since 1988 and has now won the unlimited division a record ten times, all behind the wheel of Suzuki vehicles. This year he will be behind the wheel of his SX4 race car, aiming to maintain an unbeaten run that began in 2003.

He will return to the event with his SX4-based special, though for 2011 the car has undergone significant aerodynamic changes to adapt to the modified road surfaces for this year’s race.

The turbocharged 2.7 litre V6 engine – now measuring just over 3.0 litres in capacity – has resulted in the 1090 kg Monster Special Pikes Peak SX4 producing 912 hp at 8,750 rpm and 890 Nm of torque at 5,850 rpm.

Looks as if everyone else in the class, including the likes of the Dacia Duster ‘No Limit’ , will be hoping Tajima – who of course holds the all-time course record with a time of 10 minutes 1.41 seconds set in 2007 with the Suzuki XL7 Hill Climb Special – doesn’t make it win number eleven in the Race to the Clouds.

Nasim expands Peugeot presence in Sabah

Nasim has appointed Kota Kinabalu-based Angkatan Hebat Motor as its sole Peugeot dealership in Sabah. The appointment follows the recent launch of the Peugeot Blue Box Malacca and is part of the brand’s nationwide expansion exercise.

Angkatan Hebat Motor is a unit of Angkatan Hebat, which is the fleet management services provider to the Sabah state government and is also a dealer for several commercial and passenger vehicle brands.

The company is set to launch a showroom at the One Borneo Hypermall in Kota Kinabalu and a 2S dealership for after-sales services in Kolombong, Kota Kinabalu, by end-July.

Angkatan Hebat Motor kicked off a series of two-day road shows in KK over the weekend, and next up is Tawau (June 24-25), Lahad Datu (June 28-29) and Sandakan (July 1-2). The cars that will be featured at the road show will be the 207, 308 Turbo, 3008 and the new RCZ coupe.

F10 BMW M5 finally unveiled – twin-turbo V8 power!

BMW has finally unveiled its flagship high performance F10 – the all new BMW M5, seen here in Monte Carlo Blue. For the F10, BMW has given it a higher level of design differentiation over the regular F10 and F10 M Sport, unlike the E60 where the cars looked almost the same from the front.

Moving to the rear, there’s a subtle bootlid spoiler, and like the M Sport bumper the reflectors have been moved up nearer to the tail lights. Where the M Sport bumper featured a gloss black section around the tailpipes, the lower part of the M5 bumper gets an aggressive bespoke look to complement the classic M5 quad tailpipes.

What’s in the engine bay is pretty much expected – a 4.4 litre twin-scroll twin-turbo V8, which the turbos sitting inside the V bank, so we have to say goodbye to the high revving V10 of the E60 M6. The V8 is similar to the engine in the X5 M and X6 M, except the power output is a wee bit slightly higher at 560hp instead of the 555hp in the M SUVs. Peak torque is the same at 680Nm from 1,500rpm.

There are some changes though – like most latest revisions of their force inducted engines, BMW has now managed to cramp Valvetronic valve control into the cylinder heads, which means there is now no need for a conventional throttle. This means that now technically even though the new engine does not have the individual throttle butterflies of the outgoing V10, each intake valve acts as its own throttle, so you could consider this new engine as having a total of 16 (2 intake valves per cylinder) individual throttles!

Other changes compared to the M turbo V8 engine in the X5/X6 M include an increase in boot up from 1.2 bar to 1.5, and an increase in cylinder compression ratio from 9.3:1 to 10.0:1. Peak horsepower comes in earlier at 5,750rpm compared to 6,000rpm, and this peak power is sustained up to 7,000rpm. Redline has also increased by 200rpm to 7,200rpm.

Also, unlike the M SUVs which pair the blown V8 with an M Sport Automatic to drive all four wheels via xDrive, the F10 BMW M5′s engine hooks up to a 7-speed BMW M DCT twin clutch transmission, which drives the rear axle’s Active M Differential.

The car hits 100km/h in 4.4 seconds, and goes on to a top speed of 305km/h, which is by default locked to 250km/h unless you buy the M Driver’s Package.

There are two different wheel options available, as we found out from an online BMW M5 configurator tool. The press photos only show one wheel design, a nice optional 20 inch forged design with 5 slim doublespokes called Style 343M, similar to the Style 351M wheels and the E63 M6′s wheels. The other style has double the amount of doublespokes in a 19 inch size and is called Style 345M, and this design was previewed on the M5 Concept. The 345M design is standard on the F10 M5.

These wheels are wrapped with regular tyres just like all M cars, which just goes to show that run flat tyre technology doesn’t seem to have caught up to the standards which BMW M wants just yet. You will also notice the color-coded 6-pot brake calipers which the slim spokes so proudly show off.

The instrumentation cluster continues the tradition of having white backlighting instead of amber, complimented with red needles. The black panel multi-info display on the lower half of the display is also a shade of light blue instead of amber on regular F10s. This blue theme continues in the iDrive menu system, which is also now blue instead of red.

The 7-speed DCT transmission gets its own bespoke shifter and shifter surround. The trim around the shifter area also seems to be fixed to the black shade you see above, instead of following the dashboard and door trim as with regular F10s.

The suspension system uses Dynamic Damper Control and offers Comfort Mode, Sport Mode and Sport Plus Mode. Comfort is self explanatory, while Sport stiffens the dampers a little. Sport Plus stiffens the dampers even further. These drive modes also control the M Servotronic steering system’s assistance levels, with the most assistance naturally being offered in Comfort mode.

However, there isn’t the usual rocker toggle near the gear lever as with the F10 for selecting these modes. It looks like what you have to do is control it via a button somewhere and the black panel display shows you what options you’re cycling through.

The “default” trim for the dash and doors seen here is Aluminium Trace (F10 M Sport is Aluminium Hexagon), but you can also specify Finewood trimash grain Brown or Fineline Anthracite.

The most adventurous leather trim you can go with has got to be this full Sakhir Orange trim, but you can tone down on the orange a little with Sakhir Orange/Black, which switches certain areas of the interior to black for a more two tone look rather than just orange all the way. There’s also options for a leather wrapped dash.

As for color choices, other than this blue you see here the rest are all different shades of grey or white. What about a nice red like the debut color of the X6 M? Perhaps it’s coming soon in the future. Look after the jump for a huge pic gallery of the new F10 M5.

Castrol Magnatec “Instant Protection” campaign kicks off

Castrol’s latest campaign to highlight the benefits and workings of its Magnatec motor oil kicked off on Thursday – the Instant Protection roadshow, which incorporates Augmented Reality technology to showcase the instant protection that Castrol Magnatec offers against start up engine wear, addresses the topic in a fun and interactive manner.

The campaign highlights the point that the problem of engine wear, which is caused by friction, happens mostly during start up – conventional oils drain to the bottom of the sump when the engine is off, and that up to 75% of engine wear happens while your engine is warming up, the company says. That’s where an oil like Castrol Magnatec comes in, offering a ready layer of protection with its Intelligent Molecules that cling like magnets to vital engine parts at all times.

“As up to 75% of engine wear occurs during the critical start up and warm up phase, we at Castrol liken start up engine wear to a “monster.” Castrol Magnatec has been uniquely engineered to provide unrivalled all round instant protection so that you can be sure that your engine is protected from the moment you turn the key,” said Mark Ng, marketing director of Castrol Malaysia & Singapore.

The main attraction of the Instant Protection roadshow is the opportunity to be the first to experience the world’s first giant Augmented Reality Monster, courtesy of technology where elements in a live direct or an indirect view of a physical, real-world environment are augmented by computer-generated sensory input.

The technology functions by enhancing one’s current perception of reality, allowing visitors at the roadshow to enjoy an interactive experience of being protected by Castrol Magnatec’s Intelligent Molecule from a giant monster attack.

The roadshow is currently running at Mid Valley Megamall until tomorrow, June 19, and from there it will proceed to Gurney Plaza in Penang on July 1–3, AEON Tebrau City Shopping Centre in Johor Bahru on July 22–24 before returning to the Klang Valley at One Utama Shopping Centre on August 11-14.

The campaign will also incorporate Augmented Reality technology in an interactive online game contest via Facebook, not surprisingly called the Castrol Magnatec Augmented Reality Monster game. All you need to do is become a fan of Castrol Malaysia by clicking on the “LIKE” Castrol Malaysia button, play the interactive and experiential game to stand a chance to win a host of attractive prizes.

These include holiday trips to Hong Kong Disneyland and Singapore’s Universal Studio, as well as the all-new iPad 2 and Castrol Magnatec products – visit www.facebook.com/castrolmalaysia for more info.

Chevrolet shows off double-cab Colorado Rally Concept

This Chevrolet Colorado Rally Concept made an appearance in the 5th International Motor Show in Buenos Aires, Argentina. A follow up of the Colorado Show Truck revealed at the recent Bangkok Motor Show, the Rally Concept and its predecessor is a preview of GM’s upcoming one-tonne pick-up challenger. But while the BKK Show Truck was king cab, this is a dressed up double-cab.

Equipped with 4WD and 18-inch “double ended” aluminum rims with 305/60 tyres, the Colorado Rally Concept also comes with high performance shock absorbers, height adjustable suspension and integrated winch on front and rear bumpers, with 23-metre long reinforced steel cables. The unique tailgate with cutouts is to improve aerodynamics and reduce weight.

Inside, the basic dash architecture is similar to the Bangkok truck, but with redesigned elements that go well with the “extreme” overall theme. Power comes from a 2.8-litre turbodiesel engine, Chevy says, although the main thing they want to show off for now is the styling.

Very macho. Gallery after the jump.

Shocked but happy would best describe the winner of the second Proton Inspira 2.0 CVT up for grabs during the four-month Infiniti Fever Frenzy II contest by Boustead Petroleum Marketing Sdn Bhd (BHPetrol). The lucky winner was 31 year old, Joyce Wu Kam Yin, a teacher residing in Ampang, Kuala Lumpur.

Madam Wu was eyeing the Proton Inspira first prize and as regular user of BHPetrol Infiniti Advanced2X 95 she joined the Infiniti Fever Frenzy II contest immediately upon the launch. She submitted five entry forms since the start of the contest.

Not only do I get the best fuel in the market but now I can drive home with a brand new Proton Inspira. With rising fuel prices, my concern is savings on petrol.  Infiniti petrol gives me the best mileage and that means more savings for my family and I.

“I am so happy to have won the new Proton Inspira. I am driving an old Proton Wira now so the new car will be a welcome change. Rest assured I will be pumping my trusted BHPetrol Infiniti Advanced2X 95 for my new car! Why not? Since I get good mileage and smooth driving. I can really feel the difference”.

“I will continue to be a loyal user of BHPetrol’s fuel. Now I know why Infiniti Advanced2X 95 gives me better mileage and power – it has 800ppm additives, the maximum quantity of additives to give the petrol that extra ‘kick’!” said Madam Wu.

Madam Wu was not the only winner in May as 30 customers also won RM1,000 cash prizes.

Infiniti Fever Frenzy II runs from April 1, 2011 to July 31, 2011 and for a minimum spend of RM30 at participating BHPetrol service stations, Malaysians will be eligible to win one of the two remaining Proton Inspira 2.0 CVTs or other fabulous prizes.

BHPetrol’s Retail Director, Mr. James Khoo said that there are two more months to go before the contest ends and urged Malaysians to give BHPetrol Infiniti Advanced2X 95 and 97 a try to feel the difference and at the same time be eligible to win a brand new performance-bred Proton Inspira and 30 RM1,000 cash prizes every month until July.

“Not only are two Proton Inspiras and RM60,000 cash up for grabs but in the July Grand Finale we will be giving out ten Apple iPad2, five 40 inch LED television sets and ten 500,000 BHPetrol ePoints. What’s even better is all entries submitted from the first month will be eligible to win in remaining two months. So the more you spend, the better your chance of winning.

bhpetrol

“So what better time than now to try out our BHPetrol Infiniti Advanced2X 95 and 97. BHPetrol Infiniti Advanced2X 95 and 97 will offer unparallel performance with our Advanced Double Strength formula as the new fuels are treated with Advanced Additive Compound (AAC) from Germany at the recommended maximum treat rate to give Malaysians the ultimate in fuel savings and power and at no extra cost to users.

With Infiniti Advanced2X you get top petrol performance because of Quality additives developed with world-class German technology treated at the maximum Quantity of 800 parts per million,” added Khoo.

All entries received are eligible for participation in the remaining segments of the contest. All entry forms must be submitted via contest drop boxes at participating BHPetrol service stations nationwide. Eligible participants can submit as many valid entries within the contest period but are entitled to win only one prize. First pics of European spec new Toyota Yaris revealed

These are the first official pics of the third generation European spec Toyota Yaris, which will be launched in the UK this summer. No surprise in how it looks – we’ve already seen the Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) Toyota Vitz that was revealed last December. The Yaris name is used for international markets, including ASEAN.

Developed from an original concept of “compact outside, spacious inside,” the new Yaris is claimed to “further improve the clever packaging” seen in the current car, although rival Honda Jazz is hard to beat in this department.

Toyota also says that Yaris marks a segment breakthrough for affordable multimedia connectivity with Toyota Touch & Go, which features a 6.1-inch touch screen display. New Perodua Myvi Elegance owners, you have one of those too!

Manufactured at Toyota’s Valenciennes factory in France, the new European Yaris won’t have an easy time as a foreigner in the homeland of the supermini, but Toyota hopes that “highest possible build quality”, high quality materials and surface finishes and a more driver-focused cockpit will help the cause. Three powertrains will be available: 1.0-litre VVT-i and 1.33-litre Dual VVT-i petrols and a 1.4-litre D-4D diesel.
