Fiat to build its dual clutch transmission in China

Fiat will produce its dual clutch transmission in China for its Chinese market vehicles, according to reports – the transmission will be used in vehicles built by Fiat’s 50-50 joint venture with Guangzhou Automobile Industry Group.

The DCT box will be made by Hangzhou Haveco Automotive Transmission, a three-way JV equally owned by Fiat, Guangzhou Auto and state-owned Hangzhou Advance Gearbox Group. Production of the transmission is slated to begin in 2013, HAG said in a statement. Plans are in place for an investment of 2.3 billion yuan (US$355 million) for the production of the new transmission, and in the long term, the JV will be increasing its annual transmission output to 500,000 units, HAG added.

Fiat and Guangzhou Auto’s new assembly plant, which is under construction, is set to begin operations towards the end of the year, with an initial annual capacity of 140,000 cars and 220,000 engines.

The JV’s first product is set to be the Fiat C-medium, with the likes of the second-generation Dodge Caliber – which will make its debut next year – entering the Chinese market badged as a Fiat. The current Caliber wears a CVT, but there are plans to also offer a nine-speed auto transmission for the new model by 2013, though whether this is globally or region-specific remains to be seen.

Kia Sportage to be launched next week, estimated RM140k

UPDATE: Kia Sportage launched in Malaysia – RM138,888

Naza Kia is gearing up for the launch of the all new Sportage, which is scheduled for next week (21 June). This is the third gen Kia Sportage that made its debut at last year’s Geneva show (view our post and gallery here), and it features the brand’s new design language that has won many fans.

This also means that it’s not recognisable as a successor to the current car, which was introduced here in facelift form last April.

The new Sportage will be powered by Hyundai-Kia’s Theta II 2.0-litre petrol engine with Dual CVVT, producing 166 PS and 197 Nm of torque. The transmission is a six-speed automatic with manual override. These compare well with the the segment leading Honda CR-V’s 150 PS/190 Nm and five-speed auto.

The feature list will include LED day time running lights, a large panoramic sunroof, rear view camera display, dual zone auto air con, Bluetooth, AUX, iPod and USB connectivity as well as a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating.

The indicative price is RM140,000. Click here to view live and official pics of the Sportage.

BAIC interested in acquiring Opel in Europe?

Beijing Automotive Industry Holding is certainly ramping things up – the company, which has joint ventures with Hyundai and Mercedes-Benz to build cars for the Chinese market, is set to launch its own brand later this year when it completes development of a mid-sized sedan based on the previous Saab 9-5. It also plans to launch its first electric vehicle, a compact sedan, in September.

Now, it’s looking at expanding into foreign shores, specifically Europe. The Chinese automaker has apparently intimated to General Motors that it has an interest in acquiring the latter’s Opel division in Europe, as initially reported by German newspaper Die Welt.

Beijing Automotive’s president Wang Dazong, who spent two decades working at GM as an engineer, has stated that the company aims to expand outside its domestic home market, but the reports add that no formal offer to buy Opel has been made, and GM – which has a JV in China with SAIC Motor – hasn’t offered any comment on the matter.

Porsche Cayman R launched: 10 hp more, 55 kg less, RM630k – our brief impressions from the track

Sime Darby Auto Performance, local guardian of the Porsche brand, launched the new Cayman R yesterday at the Sepang International Circuit. The hottest Cayman was first revealed to the world at the LA show in November last year. More hardcore and uncompromising than the Cayman S, the Cayman R loses weight, adds power, and takes on a different character from the S.

The 3.4-litre flat six engine from the Cayman S gains 10 horses to make 330 hp in the R, while torque remains at 370 Nm. The redline for this water-cooled, direct injection naturally aspirated powerplant is 7,500 rpm, which one will reach easily while rowing through the seven-speed dual-clutch PDK gearbox. SDAP (a yummy acronym!) says that they will forward customer orders for the six-speed manual to Germany, if they insist on self swapping.

We don’t think many would want to do so, as the PDK version is faster to 100 km/h and more fuel efficient than the manual. The century sprint is dispatched in 4.9 seconds on to a 280 km/h top speed. Combined fuel consumption is 9.3 litres per 100 km, or 10.75 km/l. Compare this to the manual’s 5.0 sec and 9.7 litres per 100 km.

The other main point is weight reduction. The Cayman R uses aluminium doors (15 kg saved) and special seats (shells made of glass and CFRP, 12 kg saved), and Porsche goes to the extent of replacing the inside door handles with fabric straps. The 19in wheels are the lightest Porsche has, and a complete set of four weighs only 40 kg.

In Europe, one can have the R without air con and radio for max weight savings, but these are essentials here, even on a car like this, so SDAP ordered them. Unladen weight is 1,295 kg. If money isn’t an issue, the RM32k optional Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCB) can add stopping power and shave a further 15 kg off the weight. One can also order a lithium ion battery in place of the normal lead acid battery – this saves 14 kg.

From the outside, the Cayman R can be spotted via its signature “Peridot” colour. But if it’s not in that shade of green, one can look out for the fixed rear spoiler, “PORSCHE” lettering along the doors, black framed headlights and a body that’s lower by 20 mm over the S. The latter is part of the sports chassis which also includes more rigid springs, bespoke anti roll bars, stiffer dampers, wider tracks (+4 mm front, +2 mm rear) and a standard rear differential lock.

A larger negative camber has also been set for both axles to increase directional stability. Also, as Stuttgart set out to build a “purer” sports car, the R cannot be specified with PASM electronically controlled dampers.

At the launch, Porsche allowed journos a chance to sample their new baby on Sepang tarmac. There was a long queue with only one running unit, but yours truly managed to squeeze in one lap before they closed shop. Read our brief impressions of the Cayman R and view the gallery after the jump.

KTM X-Bow – Clubsport and Street available in Malaysia

The KTM X-Bow, which was spotted during homologation testing at JPJ Putrajaya last month, has made its first public appearance – local KTM distributor MotoNation recently previewed the two-seater at the Auto-City Carnival in Penang, where it enjoyed a fair bit of attention, to put it mildly.

The X-Bow (as in Crossbow) will be available in Malaysia in two variant forms, the Clubsport and Street, though you can choose to dress it up in the same colours the top-of-the-line R version wears, like the one previewed in Penang.

The Audi 2.0 TFSI mill on this one offers 240 hp at 5,500 rpm and 310 Nm from 2,000 to 5,500 rpm, so there’s definitely no lack of juice. The block is mated to a six-speed manual transmission, and common to both versions are a carbon fibre monocoque (with crash box in visible carbon fibre) and a smooth surface racing underbody with a rear aluminium composite diffuser.

Also common to both variants are a mechanical limited slip differential, sports suspension, adjustable push rods and adjustable front/rear stabilisers, individually adjustable pedals and an adjustable/detachable multi-functional steering wheel.

The Street version features a keyless go system, painted wheels and a four-point safety harness, and opting to got the Clubsport route bags you a PowerParts package made up of side protection drops, a steel roll bar, racing head rest, race tow hook, an emergency stop switch, hand held fire extinguisher and a six-point safety harness.

The car hasn’t officially been launched yet, but KTM Malaysia has opened the order book for the car. Photos after the jump.

Suzuki to debut Swift-based plug-in hybrid in 2013

Looks like the Suzuki Swift will be going electric – the Nikkei reports that the automaker is set to introduce a home-rechargeable plug-in hybrid version of the hatchback sometime in 2013.

The vehicle, which will be a remodeled version of the Swift, will have a lithium-ion battery – offering it a 30 km range on a full charge – as well as a petrol engine, the displacement of which wasn’t mentioned in the report.

The hybrid is likely to cost 500,000 yen higher than the gas-powered Swift, but its pricing will not exceed 2 million yen. While initial deployment will be for the domestic market, the company is looking at exporting the model as it goes along.

ZF 9HP 9-speed auto transmission – details announced

ZF Friedrichshafen’s 9HP nine-speed automatic transmission, which was first announced earlier this year, now has more specific details about it, though there’s still no mention of when it is expected to debut in a production vehicle.

The unit, which doesn’t replace the 8HP eight-speeder and is meant for passenger cars with front-transverse drive, will be available in two variant forms, covering a torque range between 280 and 480 Nm.

The transmission, which is stop-start capable (with only one friction shift element that needs to be closed for restarting), features four individual gearsets and six shifting elements. A torque converter is used in the 9HP as the standard starting element, with a multi-level torsion damper system minimising hydraulic losses and quick bridging of the torque converter lock-up clutch facilitated at low speeds. In hybrid-based applications, the torque converter is replaced by an electric motor.

ZF says the unit, with its extremely high total spread of 9.84, offers savings of up to 16% compared to today’s standard 6-speed automatic transmissions in front-transverse installations. In ninth gear, only 1,900 rpm is needed to cruise at 120 kph instead of 2,600 in a 6-speed transmission.

With a view in installation in a wide variety of vehicle applications, the 9HP has been prepared as a ‘construction kit’ – for example, an additional transfer case can be connected for all-wheel drive operation. In this case, it can be mated to ZF’s AWD Disconnect all-wheel drive, which can be decoupled – it actuates the rear axle drive only when needed, offering a fuel savings of around 5% compared to permanent all-wheel drive.

Renault Mégane Renaultsport 265 Trophy limited edition – 15 hp and 20 Nm more than RS 250 Cup

Those salivating at the idea of a Renault Sport Mégane RS 250 Cup will be dropping buckets at the sight of this one – it’s called the Mégane Renaultsport 265 Trophy, and it’s the fastest ever road-going Renault.

The car, which will make its world debut at the World Series by Renault in Nurburgring next weekend, has 15 hp more than than the RS 250, as well as 20 Nm of extra torque at 360 Nm.

Naturally, it has improved performance statistics, if slightly so – the newcomer does the 0-100 kph sprint in exactly six seconds, compared to the 6.1 of the RS 250, and top speed is up from 245 kph to 254 kph. Meanwhile, the 360Nm is usefully available across a broad rev band between 3,000 and 5,000 rpm.

To achieve these gains, Renaultsport has upped the engine’s maximum turbo pressure to 2.5 bar, up by 0.2, together with the air intake being revised to take account of the higher pressure and running temperatures.

Features on this one include Recaro seats with yellow seatbelts and detailing, Renaultsport Monitor on-board performance tracking and an optional gloss Renault i.d. Diamond Black roof.

The 265 Trophy wears gloss black 19-inch Speedline alloys with red rim, high-performance Bridgestone Potenza RE050A tyres, ‘Trophy’ red decals on the F1-style front blade and doors, and LED daytime running lights.

The exterior shade welcomes the return of Liquid Yellow i.d. metallic paint, reborn from its original use on the Clio Renaultsport 182 and V6 255, and on the R26 and R26.R. If yellow’s not your flavour, black and white options are available.

Elsewhere, the new 265 Trophy retains the essence of the Mégane Renaultsport’s award-winning recipe, including the critically acclaimed Cup chassis (stiffer springs, dampers and anti-roll bar and grooved brake discs), mechanical limited slip differential, Brembo brakes, as well as the innovative PerfoHub independent steering axis front suspension set-up, which virtually eliminates torque steer.

Deliveries of the Mégane Renaultsport 265 Trophy commence next month, but it’s all going to be rather exclusive with this one – the car will be a limited production run of only 500 examples worldwide. Gallery after the jump.

Peugeot 408 (T73 sedan) spotted undergoing camouflaged testing on the highway

This disguised sedan was spotted by reader Eugene on the PLUS highway between Kampar and Sungkai on Friday afternoon during lunch hour. It was accompanied by a Naza Forte. Although it is disguised, we can identify it as the Peugeot 408 by looking at the shape.

Nasim has been referring to the Peugeot 408 by the codename T73 sedan so far, as the “408″ name has not been confirmed for our market. It is known as the 408 in the markets its been launched in so far. Despite its name, it’s not really a continuation of the 407, as the successor for that car has moved upmarket and is now called the Peugeot 508.

Although Nasim plans for the T73 to be locally assembled, this unit shouldn’t be one of the locally assembled units as from this picture we can see it is a left hand drive unit.

The Peugeot 408 is a C-segment sedan and is based on the Peugeot 308 hatchback chassis. However, Peugeot has increased the wheelbase so there should be significantly better interior space for the 408 sedan as compared to the 308 hatchback. Because of the longer chassis and new body panels instead of merely carrying over the 308 body panels, the 408 doesn’t suffer much from the awkwardness of typical hatches that are converted to sedans.

The 408 has a wheelbase of 2,710mm, which is 10mm longer than the roomy 8th generation Honda Civic’s 2,700mm wheelbase. In China, the 408 was launched with two engines – a 110hp/147Nm 1.6 litre engine and a 147hp/200Nm 2.0 litre engine.

Look after the jump for the full gallery of spyshots, a promo video, as well as product photos of the Peugeot 408 from its international unveiling.
