Mercedes GP hoping to continue run at Silverstone

It certainly promises to be an intriguing race this weekend at the British Grand Prix in Silverstone, what with the latest changes to occur. The weather is also looking to play a part in the proceedings, with wet conditions being forecast.

This is welcome news for Mercedes GP, which is hoping to follow up on the result obtained in Montreal. MGP boss Nick Fry says that chances for the weekend are looking up, though it will depend a little bit on the weather. “We have a situation with the car that it tends to work better in cooler conditions, and it looks like it will be cooler and potentially with showers, so I hope we can do better. Obviously the result in Montreal was a much better one, so with similar conditions I hope we can do the same,” he said during a brief interview at the team’s base in Brackley.

Red Bull Racing has been far ahead of the pack, but will the latest change mean others will now catch up? “Red Bull have done a fantastic job this year, but Formula 1 can change very quickly, as we all know. It’s clear that they have some bigger benefits that the rest of the teams with the blown exhaust system, as it’s called, so Adrian Newey is saying it will affect them more than others.”

“I think that things may change for the second half of the year, but Red Bull Racing has gotten so far in the first half of the year, it’s difficult to see them being caught, but you never know. In F1 many unexpected things happen.”

“Realistically, the people we need to compete with for the moment are Ferrari and McLaren. At the moment Red Bull is a little bit out of reach, though that may change with the changes in the regulations, but we’re slightly behind the other two, so they are our immediate targets,” he said.

Newey has certainly been vocal about the latest change, and Fry is sympathetic. “In
many ways I personally have sympathy for Adrian and Red Bull – to change something as significant as this halfway through the season is a little bit tough. We’ve had a history in F1 of changing technology, but usually at the end of the season.

“If you think of the mass damper which Renault had or the double diffuser that we clearly had, these all finished to the end of the season. I do think that we need to think in the future about how we control the introduction of these things, about the implications about some of these technologies early on, and if we think it’s going to lead F1 into a situation where its undesirable, it would be better to stop it in the first place rather than have everyone spend a lot of money and time pursuing a particular innovation and then have it banned,” he explained.

Guess we’ll find out how much the latest changes will affect things this coming weekend.

Bersih Road Closures in KL on 9th July 2011

The following major roads going in and out the city will be closed this Saturday, as part of the government’s measures to head off the Bersih 2.0 rally.

Please take note, and if you are not going to participate in the rally (your personal choice – please try to keep the comments area free of political messages) it’s best that you stay away from the area.

According to city police chief Datuk Amar Singh, those who live and work in the area would be allowed in – I’m presuming some kind of proof would be needed – the easiest would be to check the address listed on your IC.

Facelifted Inokom i10 launched, RM47,988 to RM53,988

Hyundai-Sime Darby Motors (HSDM) has launched the facelifted Inokom i10. Besides Hyundai’s new corporate face, the latest i10 also comes with an improved 1.25-litre Kappa engine. The range now consists of three variants, an entry level 1.1L, 1.25 standard spec and 1.25 high spec, priced at RM47,988, RM50,688 and RM53,988, respectively.

The 1.25 Kappa engine’s main improvement is the addition of Continuously Variable Valve Timing, or CVVT. Power and torque figures are also up on the previous non-CVVT unit – 86 hp and 120 Nm versus 79 hp and 112 Nm. Claimed combined fuel consumption is 5.3 litres per 100 km. There are no changes to the 1.1 Epsilon engine, which churns out 65 hp.

Both engines are paired to a four-speed automatic gearbox. The i10 uses Hyundai’s Motor Driven Power Steering (MDPS, another name for EPS), which helps with fuel economy.

Besides the new face dominated by that trapezoid grille, the i10 1.25 also spots a new rear spoiler and rear bumper plus elongated combination lamps. The bigger engined variants also come with new wing mirrors with LED indicators. There are also new design alloy wheels.

Inside, the instrument panel is now illuminated in blue (used to be green), with the addition of a digital display. It shows a digital fuel gauge and gear position, things that were previously not available. The audio system has MP3, USB and AUX input, as well as a remote control.

Spec wise, equipment exclusive to the 1.25 high spec are ABS with EBD, dual front airbags and fog lamps.

The i10 1.25 Kappa CVVT is available in four colours – Alpine Blue, Ice Silver, Crystal White and Oyster Grey. The 1.1 can be had in the same shades, except for Oyster Grey, but with the added choice of Stone Black and Champagne Gold.

The i10 is one of our favourite small cars; read the review of the pre-facelift i10 Kappa here. More pictures after the jump.

Saab-Youngman JV to build three new models in Sweden

Swedish automaker Saab, part owned by Spyker, part owned by the Chinese, has signed an agreement with Zhejiang Youngman Passenger Car Group Co to form a joint venture in Sweden. This 50-50 JV will develop three “completely new” vehicles, namely the Saab 9-1, 9-6 and 9-7, according to Swedish Automobile, formerly known as Spyker Cars NV.

The arrangement will see Saab design, develop and test the new models while Youngman provides financial support. However, the agreement between both parties has yet to get the all important approval by regulators in Sweden and China.

Besides that, Swedish Automobile also said that the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed last month with Youngman and Chinese auto distributor Pang Da Automobile is now a formal and legally binding agreement. Under the deal, Pang Da and Youngman will jointly invest 245 million euros in Swedish Automobile. The trio will set up joint ventures to manufacture and distribute Saabs in China.

As we know, Youngman’s current range in China includes rebadged Protons branded as “Lotus”. Now that they have Saab, will they still need the partnership with Proton?

July 9: Puduraya bus services moved to Hentian Duta and Bdr Tasik Selatan, stage buses not allowed into city

As we all know, this Saturday (July 9) is the day that Bersih has chosen to make its stand, and the authorities are doing all they can to disrupt the gathering, which is, for now, planned for Stadium Merdeka at 2pm.

Among the measures will be preventing people from entering the city centre, and the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) has announced that the city’s main Puduraya bus terminal will be shut down, with northbound services directed to Hentian Duta. Bus services at Hentian Putra will be moved to the Terminal Bersepadu at Bandar Tasik Selatan. This is effective from tomorrow midnight till Saturday 10pm.

In addition, stage buses (such as those by RapidKL, Metrobus, Cityliner etc) will be barred from entering the city centre. For buses coming from Jalan Semarak, Jalan Setapak/Genting Kelang, Jalan Ipoh, Jalan Kuching and Jalan Duta, services will terminate at the Titiwangsa LRT/Monorail station. Buses from Jalan Ampang will stop at the Dato Keramat station.

As for routes from Jalan Kg Pandan and Jalan Cheras, buses will stop at the Maluri LRT station. For those coming from Federal Highhway via Jalan Bangsar, Jalan Travers and Jalan Tun Sambanthan, your coach will stop at KL Sentral. The same goes for buses from Jalan Damansara.

It’s going to be chaos on the roads, so be prepared or stay at home!

Mitsubishi i-MiEV – two new trim levels, extended range

In Japan, Mitsubishi Motors Corporation has announced that its i-MiEV electric vehicle is now available in two trim variant levels, these being the entry-level M and higher-spec G.

Both versions are powered by a similar Y4F1 motor drive system but differ in their max outputs – the M offers 30kW, or 41 PS, while the G has 47 kW, or 64 PS – and battery rated capacities, in this case 10.5 kWh for the M and 16 kWh for the G. As a result, the cruising range per charge also differs, with the M offering 120 km of travel and the G, 180 km. In the case of the latter, this is a 20% improvement over the original i-MiEV.

Besides the extended cruising range, the G version will be equipped with more comprehensive equipment and a higher trim specification. It will feature LED headlamps and rear combination lamps, 15-inch alloy road wheels, leather-wrapped steering wheel/shifter knob, a 7-inch navigation system and heated seats (driver and front passenger) as standard, all thrown in at a price lower than that of the original i-MiEV.

There’s also a factory-fitted option called MiEV Remote System for the variant, which allows the owner to set the time he wants battery charging to start and finish and to pre-activate the climate control system before entering the car.

In terms of charge times, with a 200V AC current, the M can be fully charged in 4.5 hours, while the G takes seven hours, and on quick charge (to 80% capacity) it takes just 15 minutes for the M, and double that duration for the G.

The cruising range per charge has been extended by linking brake pedal usage to the regenerative braking system, while Active Stability Control (ASC) is now fitted as standard. The M model makes its domestic debut on July 25, while the G arrives in August, with seven body colours available for the two trim level variants.

Newey: Diffuser ban will ‘quite heavily’ affect Red Bull

The FIA has imposed a ban on off-throttle diffusers that will come into effect this weekend at Silverstone. While most teams sport a variation of it, Red Bull Racing’s Adrian Newey designed machine has made the most of it so far, and the ace engineer admits that the champs will be “heavily affected”.

“I think we will be quite heavily affected because our car was designed around the exhaust in as much as it was part of the design right from the outset. Probably with the exception of Renault and ourselves, everybody else has generally speaking copied someone else’s principal, mainly ours, and adapted to the car that they had pre-season. Because our car has been designed around it, it’s going to be more of a hit for us but it’s very difficult to forecast,” Newey told Reuters.

The RBR chief technical officer is clearly unhappy with the ban, hinting that it’s a move in favour of Ferrari.

“I’m slightly baffled by it because it’s been declared legal forever until this race. The obvious parallel is when active suspension was banned at the end of ’93, where there was no regulation change. Ferrari couldn’t get their active to work and suddenly it was illegal for the next year,” he pointed out.

“It’s easy to fall into the Machiavellian conspiracy theories. Whether that’s true or not, I don’t know and I can’t comment. My read of it would be that, of our main competitors, which are clearly McLaren and Ferrari, then Ferrari probably haven’t got their exhaust to work that well so they are quite happy to see the back of it.

“McLaren probably don’t know whether they are going to lose more or less than us. But probably on the basis that they could probably do with a wild card thrown into the pack, they are probably relieved to have something that is different,” Newey added.

Is FIA trying to level the teams and give a leg up to the chasing pack? Will it work? We’ll find out this weekend.

Peugeot ’208′ to debut next year with new family look

It has been five years since the Peugeot 207 found early adopter homes in Europe, and it’s time for the next generation. Word is that a Peugeot “208″ will make its motor show debut at next year’s Geneva show, and it will be a fresh start for the brand, design wise. That means the end of the current wide mouthed look, which is already not present on the Peugeot 508.

This is according to PSA Peugeot-Citroen’s director of design Jean-Pierre Ploue. “The new Peugeot 208 will be a break from the past, it must be homogenous. Each model must feed the brand and be part of the family,” the ex Citroen design boss said, pointing out that this family look method is also used by Peugeot’s Euro rivals Volkswagen and Opel/Vauxhall.

“The 208 must be able to be sold worldwide in Asia, South America, or wherever, as well as in Europe. It must be easily recognised as being distinctly Peugeot everywhere in the world,” he added.

What should we expect? “You see a little bit of what (the new style) will be in the SR1 concept car. The SR1 represents what we want to do, with an athletic, pure, elegant, and precise design with much allure,” Ploue said.

The SR1 and HR1 Concept from Paris previews Peugeot’s new direction. Do you like what you see, or do you prefer the current signature Pug look?

CONFIRMED: CKD Subaru model will be based on the XV Concept, brand to have 20 outlets in Malaysia by 2014!

Yesterday, we broke the news of Fuji Heavy Industries (FHI) and Tan Chong Group signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to assemble Subaru vehicles in Malaysia, making our country the regional production hub for the brand. Production will start in October 2012 at 5,000 units per year, and the vehicle in question will be a “compact SUV”. We figured that Subaru wouldn’t have categorised its Forester as “compact”, so it has to be another model.

Well, we can now confirm that the compact SUV in question is NOT the Forester, but the production version of the Subaru XV Concept. Making its debut at this year’s Shanghai show, the XV Concept is billed as a crossover “blending exceptional SUV practicality with a fashionable form”.

While the XV’s shape looks similar to the Impreza hatchback’s at a glance, its front and rear styling is unique. The Shanghai show car measured 4,450 mm long and had a 2,635 mm wheelbase, figures that are 35 mm and 15 mm longer than the Impreza hatch, respectively. Not sure if the production car will stick to this, but we see similarities between the XV’s relationship to the five-door Impreza and Suzuki’s SX4/Swift models.

The CKD XV is part of FHI and Motor Image’s big plans for the ASEAN region. While Subaru doesn’t have much of a presence in Malaysia at present with just two sales and distribution outlets, that’s going to change with 18 outlets planned through 2013. This means that by 2014, Malaysia will have 20 Subaru outlets if all goes to plan.

Following the same timeline, Indonesia will get 20 new outlets while Thailand will have 22. Both these right-hand drive countries will be importing the Malaysian assembled XV under AFTA rules.

Motor Image, which is part of the Tan Chong Group, sold 2,300 Subarus in ASEAN last year, but will be targeting much higher figures from next year – the company expects to increase revenues by over 10 fold within the first year of introducing the XV in Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia.
