Proton stringently re-evaluating all its vendors

According to reports, Proton says it will reevaluate all its vendors as it sets out to ready its plant for the production of its new global car, slated to enter the market early 2012.

Proton MD Datuk Seri Syed Zainal Abidin said the more stringent reevaluation of the Proton vendors is to minimise the level of defects in the new car. “At the moment, we have identified 20 Proton vendors from the 108 for our new model. Some vendors will be merged to ensure a better quality of production,” he told reporters yesterday.

The reports add that the company has also signed a MoU with the National Productivity Corporation to enhance the abilities of its vendors through a Business Excellence Practices (BEx) model, which represents a working structure capable of evaluating the performance of a company in terms of leadership, customer focus, planning, information, processes and outcome.

“The target objective is to enhance the ability of the Proton vendors to be more competitive, in line with the government initiative, as outlined in the Third Industrial Masterplan,” said Syed Zainal.

First image of next generation Honda CR-V released!

A single photo of the next generation Honda CR-V has been making its way around the internet, a sign that Honda could be prepared to launch the new SUV soon.

This doesn’t really look like a production car though, as it has tinted head lamps and very small wing mirrors. It might be a concept car designed to reveal what the production next generation CR-V would look like, before Honda reveals the production form. Honda USA has been known to do this in the past, just like it did with the recent new generation US market Honda Civic sedan and coupe.

From the looks of this image, the CR-V looks like it will continue to be a 5-seater. The Accord Coupe-like side window profile looks nice, and there’s a hint of the Volvo XC90 at the rear tail lamps. Check out our previously featured spyshots.

Honda Stream to undergo “product update campaign” in Malaysia – 1,494 vehicles from MY 2008-2010 involved

Honda Malaysia is undertaking what it calls a “product update campaign” for its Stream, involving 2008 to 2010 model year vehicles, with a total of 1,494 units involved. This is aimed at addressing a technical irregularity involving the water pump pulley bolts, caused by a burr around the periphery of the bolt-mounting hole.

Essentially, a burr is a raised edge formed from the machining operation, which in drilled holes can cause issues, such as that happening here with the Stream.

Honda Malaysia said in a statement that owners with affected units may observe a few symptoms including the constant display of warning lights on the speedometer and a noise from water pump. In the long run, the burr will cause the pulley bolt to become loose and the bolt may break.

When that happens, the auxiliary belt will loosen and eventually detach from the alternator. As the supply of current is interrupted, the electric power steering assist will gradually come to a halt that makes maneuvering difficult. There is also a possibility that the engine may stall.

Upon inspection, all affected units will be replaced with new water pump pulley bolts. The company is in the midst of preparing the replacement parts, and necessary inspection and replacement will be carried out when the parts are ready. Honda Malaysia added that all current selling models are not affected.

Meanwhile, in related news, reports say that Honda will be recalling about 200,000 passenger cars globally due to the issue above. The company said it had received 63 customer reports in Japan of engine malfunctions as a result of the defect, but said none had led to accidents.

In Japan, it will recall 50,122 units of the Stream, Civic and Crossroad that were made at its domestic plants between July 2008 and July 2010. “Globally there are some 200,000 cars, including those in Japan, with similar troubles,” a Honda spokesman said, adding that it would recall about 100,000 units in South America and 6,800 in Europe.

The Italian military police have selected the Lotus Evora S as rapid response vehicles – two units of the car will see service in Rome and Milan in a two-year long stint. The Arma dei Carabinieri, as it is known, is a division of the Italian army and plays a similar role in Italy to Scotland Yard in the UK, working with the civilian police.

In preparation for the job with the Carabinieri, both Evoras have been equipped with some of the very latest voice recognition technology, including the EVA (Enhanced Vehicle Automation) system. A special portable refrigeration compartment has been fitted behind the front seats, which will allow for the rapid transport of vital organs and blood required during medical emergencies.

It’s a feather in the cap for the brand, Group Lotus’ CEO Dany Bahar said, considering the market where the cars will see service. “Everyone knows that Italy has more than it’s fair share of high profile sports car manufacturers, so it is a real honour for a relatively small British brand to be in this position,” he said at the cars’ handover ceremony.

Suzuki now looking to expand ties with Fiat

In further news that is surely telling about the current climate of that particular relationship, Suzuki is eyeing deeper ties with Fiat as its frustration with Volkswagen grows, reports say.

Automobilwoche reports that a senior Suzuki executive, who was unnamed, told the German weekly that the cooperation with Fiat has been going well in a climate of mutual trust for years. “It is perfectly imaginable that a strengthened partnership would be beneficial to both parties. On the other hand, our cooperation with Volkswagen is still being reviewed,” he said.

Back in May, Corriere della Sera, an Italian daily, reported that a secret meeting took place between Fiat and Suzuki executives in Italy.

Meanwhile, Hans Demant, who is in charge of international cooperation at VW, said both automakers were two independent companies with different economic models. “As a result, cooperation should be developed with caution. It is unfortunately taking a little longer than what had been initially planned,” he was quouted as telling Automobilwoche.

Geely to build its own assembly plant in Indonesia

Geely Automobile is definitely looking at making some serious inroads in Indonesia. The company has been selling its cars in the country since April 2010, and through its local subsidiary Geely Mobil Indonesia now has 18 dealerships across the country, with two new ones to come about this year.

Now, reports say that it is planning to build its own assembly plant there, which will be located in Cikarang, Bekasi in West Java. Land clearing for the site is being carried out now, and when completed – at a cost of between US$30 million to US$50 million – the plant will start assembling Geely products in 2015.

Currently, the company sells the Panda hatchback as well as the MK sedan and MK2 hatchback in Indonesia, the latter two being assembled locally at an Astra International plant in North Jakarta. It showcased its latest product for the market, the Panda LC Cross, at the IIMS in Jakarta last week. Looking to be very depanda-ble as a player in Indonesia, the brand is.

2011 German GP: Lewis Hamilton wins it for McLaren

Lewis Hamilton has won the 2011 German Grand Prix. The McLaren driver took the gong at Nurburgring ahead of Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso and Red Bull’s Mark Webber. It was Hamilton’s second win this season after China, and his 16th career victory.

Current world champion Sebastian Vettel had a quiet race by his standards – enduring a big spin on lap 10 after an uncharacteristic mistake of putting his wheels on the grass while at that – and finished fourth, ahead of Felipe Massa of Ferrari, though there was a final flourish from both at the very end of the race.

The two drivers pitted at the same time a lap from the end for hard tyres, and while Massa led Vettel in, the Red Bull crew managed to get the German out ahead of the Brazilian. Still, it was Vettel’s first no-podium finish this season.

Finishing in sixth was Adrian Sutil of Force India, followed by the two Mercedes GP Petronas cars of Nico Rosberg and Michael Schumacher. In ninth was Kamui Kobayashi of Sauber, while 10th place went to Vitaly Petrov of Lotus Renault.

Meanwhile, it was another day to forget for the other man at McLaren, Jenson Button. Things may not have been as dramatically painful as that in the British GP a fortnight ago, but a retirement is a retirement, however it comes – the end for the 2009 world champion came on lap 36 when a hydraulics problem put him out.

Pole-sitter Webber had a poor start to the race, allowing Hamilton to get the jump on him at the first turn, and he was almost taken too – on either side – by the two Ferraris, though that moment came to pass and it eventually settled into the usual strategy game and seeing if staying out longer – or coming in early – on a particular compound could prove an inspired choice.

While that dictated things, the race itself was far from dull – there were certainly enough moments of bravado, first from Webber on lap 32 in attempting to overtake Hamilton as the Englishman came out from the pits after a tyre change, though that maneouvre, which almost came to the point of contact, didn’t come off for the Australian.

Then it was Hamilton’s turn to do the same to Alonso a lap later as the Ferrari came out of the pits, and through sheer muscle, the 2008 champion darted past the Spaniard. Once in the lead, Hamilton edged away from the two-time champion.

Towards the end, the leading pack attempted to stretch their softs for as long as they could – Hamilton traded to the hards on lap 51, Alonso two laps later, and Webber holding out until only four laps from the end, a gamble which didn’t pay off. In the end, Hamilton cruised to a comfortable victory, and set the fastest lap of the race two laps before the chequered flag.

Beyond the racing, what is perhaps more telling is the fact that the previously all-conquering Red Bulls are starting to look quite mortal after all. Vettel still holds a commanding lead in the drivers championship, 77 points ahead of second-placed Webber, but if the last two races are anything to go by, it’s going to be a very interesting run to the end of the season. Has the RBR juggernaut finally been derailed? Next weekend’s race in Hungary should provide more clues.

You can check out the full results here.
