Skoda is back with two models – Octavia RS and Superb!

After a period of inactivity, the Skoda brand has been relaunched by franchise holder AutoPraha Sdn Bhd, which is part of the Berjaya Group. The two models spearheading this comeback are the Octavia RS and the Superb.

The Octavia RS is the range topper of the Octavia Mk2 family, which was introduced in 2004 and facelifted in 2009. The Octavia sits on VW’s PQ35 platform, which underpins a big number of cars within the VW Group, such as the Golf Mk5, VW Scirocco, Eos and Tiguan, as well as Audi’s A3 and TT, among other models.

Skoda is back with two models – Octavia RS and Superb!

The Octavia RS is powered by a 2.0 TSI petrol engine with 197 hp and 280 Nm of torque (as per Golf GTI Mk5) paired to a six-speed DSG gearbox. 0-100 km/h is done in 7.2 seconds, slightly, but not much slower than a GTI.

The long standard kit list includes xenons with AFS, fog lights with cornering function, multifunction leather steering, 12-speaker and in dash 6-disc ICE system, ESP and front/side airbags. Also thrown in are the go faster bits seen here.

Moving on, the Superb is the brand’s biggest car and flagship model. Unveiled at Geneva 2008, the Superb sits on a stretched version of the platform used by the Octavia.

It has a unique five-door liftback saloon layout, with a tailgate that can open like a regular saloon boot or fully up liftback style. Skoda calls it the TwinDoor. The rear legroom is simply superb, better than some mega bucks premium badged limos. Experience to believe.

Under the hood is a 1.8 TSI with 158 hp and 250 Nm, the latter produced between 1,800 and 4,500 rpm. 0-100 km/h is done in 8.5 seconds and combined consumption is 7.6 l/100 km with a seven-speed DSG box. The kit list mirrors the long one of the Octavia RS, with added leather.

The Octavia RS costs RM188,888, while the Superb is priced at RM199,999, OTR without insurance. The Fabia RS will be joining this duo soon. Skoda’s showroom is located within Bermaz Motor’s Mazda showroom in Glenmarie.

superb is really made for people that value the car with price per size. which is the most case in malaysia and other emerging market, like city over jazz, elongated pug 20x ,fiesta,mazda2(or is it mazda 3), vios over vios.

it is cheaper than A4/c-class/3-series but has more interior space to offer than A6/e-class/5-series.

Wow,nicely priced!!I really like Skoda’s simplistic designs. And I’ve read an issue of TopGear last time about the legroom. It’s even better than a Bentley Continental if i’m not mistaken.or was it a LWB 7-er/S-klasse.But the design of the superb does looks quite luxurious~

In fifth gear , they pitted a Superb with a Merc E-class, their conclusion was, if you don’t mind the badge and the slightly less refinement (compare to an E-class), you still get ALOT of car for the money… , in some areas it is better than the E-class even…

Camry compare to this? You got to be kidding. Camry has no way near superb in terms of space, interior, engine, gearbox, handling and so many more. I’ve tested this car, its very spacious. Although its big, but it feels like you are driving a small car.

But, one thing do disappointed me, it is the price, it is way overprice. Do Berjaya even know that this car is selling cheap in Europe???

The Superb sits well above the Passat. In tests it is frequently compared against BMW 5 series, Audi A6 and Mercedes E class, and it can hold up well. It is extremely good value for money at 200k. The main competitor costs 370k. I mean, come on, how can you complain? Is brand image all that matters? If BMW would stick the BMW badge on a Viva and sell it at 80k, will it be very good value for money?

  • For the Octavia RS are just slightly RM20k cheaper than Golf GTi and less 10bhp? Hmm…

The Superb at RM200k quite a bargian car in their continental car segment compare to 2.0 S80 for RM260k or same 1.8TSi fitted Audi A4 for RM230k. But it doesn’t have a status make it among premium S80 or A4, its more to the class of Peugeot 407 or Citroen C5.

As the Polo 1.2TSi sold at RM110k and Golf 1.4TSi at RM150k, the Fabia 1.2TSi should sold below RM100k and 1.4TSi below RM120k.

But still Skoda is a ‘poor man’ car back in Europe. I believe only Jeremy Clarkson’s biggest fan would bought it lol

As the Superb is competing with 5 series and A6, i think the price is rather fair. The Octavia RS is a supersized Golf GTI, since it is bigger obviously it costs more. It competes with Camry, Accord, Mondeo, Passat.

Perhaps this is how a kia or hyundai should progress to look like in 2011 if its not for german designer assistance… hehehe.. the czech & korean seem to love ugliness, but the korean design have mostly moved on..

which is rather weird as skoda did get helps from the germans all this while… why insists in designing it this ‘unattractive’ when the rest is rather impressive?

What’s so unattractive about the Skodas? I usually prefer them over their brothers from VW, Skoda and Audi. Also keep in mind the Superb is a (luxury) executive saloon. Those cars aren’t meant to look flashy.

Elsewhere these cars are rather popular. http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/carreviews/driver_power_2011/265609/the_top_100.html

    China Skoda Superb 1.8 tsi c/w 7 speed DSG sell for RMB 220K – 240K (RM 103K – 108K).
    Sonata 2.0 auto RMB 142K (RM 66K)
    Base on malaysia price Superb RM200K / RM 103K = 1.94 or 194%
    Sonata RM136K / RM 65K = 2.09 or 209%

So judge by yr self who is making more margin ?

i dont think it is overprice (for performance car like this), it’s CBU price, even Proton is more expensive than some of Japanese cars in Singapore.

As one of a Skoda owner, here some of my opinions:

    – Skoda’s (in Malaysia) is CBU from Czech, and imported from Germany, so the price is standard for CBU units. Even CBU japanese cars also expensive in Malaysia.
    – VW bring here is not assembled in Germany (some 3rd world country …) i think (correct me if i’m wrong),
    – In China, of course Skoda is cheap, because it is locally assembled, and they produces in masses quantities.
    – You can compare other makers that have same specs/performance with Octavia VRS, Honda Civic Type R is more expensive, Audi with same mechanicals (A4 2.0 turbo is RM100++ more …of course it’s a luxury brand..) , Volvo s40 2.0T CKD, more expansive, Only Mazda3 MPS is cheaper. Compare with BMW 325i thats is double the VRS price (almost same performance maaa…)

For me, Octavia is more for family car, you get huge boot (even more spaces than a current BMW 5 series… and it’s liftback style, you can put a 12kg washing machine inside..huhu….), if you are singles, go for Golf GTi.

in terms of quality you must go and see the real car, not just judge from the pictures, becoz it;s not a pretty car indeed, the finishing is better than CKD BMW (dont compare the luxury items and the extra2 gadgets indside, of course cannot match the BMW…)

  • How on earth can some people actually compare the Octavia to proton?? I mean.. proton??? come on lah.. it’s like comparing Ramly burger and a T.G.I.F burger.. no match at all.
And might i remind everyone, it’s not the looks that matter so much as the performance and the specifications..how many 2.0L cars can actually match almost 200hp? Not many, right? This car can eat the Accord and Camry and Teana for breakfast..

    Skoda is for someone who:
    1. Do not want to own a car which you can see tons of them in the street with same logo, same made, and same color…
    2. Do not want to follow the mass market trend
    2. Do not want to show off their money
    3. Appreciates a good car with unbelievable conti car reliability
    4. Know the engine, platform , suspension, gearbox, electronics, radio, aircond, and many more [except the body] is the same with audi and volkswagen [apparently many ppl here in this forum simply blind] – how to compared a korean engine with DSG/TSI
    5. Enjoy driving the car for a long long years
    6. Do not believe in 2nd hand value of car – If you want 2nd value, go buy house
    7. Enjoy constantly being asked ” what car is this?”
    8. Can teach rude roadhog ah beng driver a lesson once in a while
    9. Like to here” WOW” when somebody take a ride of your car
    10. Believe in buying a car is simply our choice. You buy yours and I buy mine. No need to condemn who is wrong and who is right.

Frankly, compared with Singapore, Skoda brand is spoilt by bad dealership in Malaysia. Bad in terms of their market strategy. Made worst by Malaysia NAP policy.

the car ‘s performance and credibility is no doubt….but i still think the price needs to be a little lower….if its priced around 160-165 for the octavia..it be quite a steal..as good as the skoda is…it is a budget brand in the vw group….

the beauty about VW is they are able to really make small but significant differences to thier cars despite sharing almost everything underneath….which is why the passat is not as sharp as an a4 front wheeler or the difference between the touareg and cayenne although they are basically the same car bolt for bolt.. or even the tt and sirocco..in VW world..what u pay is truly what u get……if the styling was sharper..this price would be a steal..but at the way it currently is..its still a tad too high….good effort nonetheless..more options for all of us i guess….

in 2006, Octavia FSI (N.A) priced at RM165k, then reduced to RM150k a year later, then to RM140k… no worry, we can wait for next two years and enjoy the discounts price.

Yes, there is a difference but that small difference made RM50,000 difference [passat vs audi]. Mainly the differences are due to shape and car weight as mentioned by the review and test drive in Europe For example the heavier Skoda VRS vs lighter Golf. But there is a steal if you own Volkswagen group cars especially the turbo engine version TSI . By small cash, your car becomes a monster. As what i have done.

  • I’ve put a dream to own one for octavia RS. Somehow it all goes off completely after the mechanics show me the true colors in repairing my fabia. Even Ah Beng can do better than them. They are not even repair but also damage my car with smile. Sighh… From that day, no more intention to add skoda in my list. bye-bye skoda.

How long is the warranty period? I foresee it should be no less than 5 years – being the relatively unknown brand, what stop most Malaysian from buying this car is the maintenance. 5 years should be good enough.

I have been in a Skoda Fabia as a passenger, doing 200 km/h on the Autobahn. It still felt relatively secure and refined (well, the road was friggin slippery! Snow everywhere…), and it’s not really bigger than a MyVi (ok, it was the station wagon version, so it’s bigger).

Hi all, am a Passat CC baseline owner, and after seeing the video and spec of the Skoda superb in their website, I believe the specs that comes with the Malaysia Superb is better than the top of the range VW Passat CC. The auto side parking is only available in the Toureg for VW Malaysia, yet Skoda put it in the Superb.

I was driving past one yesterday at the Pus highway, and the power was ok as it tried to keep uo with me, a gorgeous lady was behind the wheel, so I finally slowed down to take a closer look.

If you all do your research, Skoda in Europe has a very good reliability record, and is often mentioned when compared to VW and Seat (The Spanish). The built quality is also better than the Seat.

If only VW had taken over Proton, our Satria GTi would have te same as the golf and Octavia engine under the boot! And the perdana will be equivalent to the Superb or Passat instead of Mitsubishi Lancer rip-off.
