Another version of the new Toyota Camry – is this ours?

Two days ago, we posted on the new seventh-generation Toyota Camry that made its debut in USA. However, we all know that there are various versions of Toyota’s popular D-segment sedan, and what we may be getting is likely to different from the North American car.

Now, here are some official shots of another version of the new Camry, released by Toyota Ukraine. We can see that the front and rear design of this car is totally different from the US version. This set of pics reveal a Camry with a “baby Lexus LS” front end, which features a grille with more slats and more chrome, which is what buyers from our region (plus China and Russia) generally prefer.

And while the side profile is similar to what we’ve seen from the US, the rear end is once again completely different. While the US car has those distinctive “boomerang” lamp clusters, this one is more “full” in shape, and both sides are connected with a fat chrome strip. Even the rims look familiar.

Inside, there’s lots of wood with glossy finish and metallic accents. They go on to a dark grey cabin, and the overall look is quite classy in a traditional way. We have a feeling that this Camry we see here will be the one ASEAN is getting.

A quick look at the teased brochure/price list reveals two variants for the Ukrainian market – a 2.5 litre inline-4 making 180 PS and a 3.5 litre V6 making 277 PS, both with 6-speed automatic transmission. Hope this means our Camry will also get a 2.5 litre with 6-speed AT to replace the current 2.4 litre with 5-speed AT.

Do you prefer this over the US version? Gallery after the jump.

Proton set to take on IRC champs Skoda in their home rally

The Intercontinental Rally Challenge (IRC) resumes this weekend in the Czech Republic, and Proton will be there at the Barum Czech Rally Zlin with their yellow Neos piloted by two-time FIA Junior World Rally Champion P-G Andersson and double FIA European Rally Champion Giandomenico Basso. This is round seven of IRC 2011′s 11 races.

Based in the south-east of the Czech Republic, some 300 km east from capital Prague and about 200 km north from the Austrian capital of Vienna, the 41st edition of the Zlin Rally will be contested through the forests close to the city of Zlin. The event will consist of 15 special stages with a combined competitive distance of 248.48 km. High-speed and tricky asphalt roads will be waiting for the drivers.

Rallying begins with a 9.36 km test along a super special stage in the town centre which will be run in the dark before day two takes teams through another nine SS totaling 133.4 km. The third and final day will feature six special stages with a distance of 115 km. The event will see 29 S2000 cars battle, 14 of which are Skoda Fabia S2000s, from a total of 123 registered entries. This is the home race for Skoda, the IRC champions.

“The roads on this rally can be quite bumpy with some broken tarmac, which is good for me – this kind of condition suits me quite well. I haven’t competed in Zlin before, but I have heard a lot about the rally. I’m looking forward to getting out there and driving again to chase a good result,” said ex-Suzuki man Andersson.

“The most important thing is to find a good confidence in the car on the bumpy surface. Barum is not like a normal tarmac rally, it is very specific. The bumps make finding the right set-up complicated so there is a lot of work to do with the dampers. The roads in Zlin can be especially difficult when there is rain,” said the experienced Italian Basso.

I went to the official Czech Rally website, and guess what greeted me? Hint, it’s not a Skoda!

Diesels and Hybrids, how are they faring in Malaysia?

Diesel powered passenger vehicles outside of the pick-up truck segment have mushroomed in recent times, thanks to players such as BMW and Ford, while some like Hyundai, Chevrolet and Land Rover have brought in torquey oil burner SUVs. This is in addition to truck based SUVs that traditionally use diesel engines such as the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport and Toyota Fortuner.

As for hybrids, they’re now a regular fixture in urban areas. The government’s tax exemption for hybrids below 2.0 litres has benefited Honda with the Insight and Toyota with its Prius; the former is the cheapest and most popular hybrid in the country now. Even premium brand Lexus has joined in with the fun with the CT 200h, RX 450h and the LS 600hL, although the latter two do not qualify for tax breaks.

Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) figures show that Honda sold 745 units of the Insight in July, and 3080 units so far this year, far higher than the costlier, but higher tech Prius, which did 158 units in July and 1085 units year to date.

By the way, Honda Malaysia sold more Insights than Civic 1.8s from Jan-July; the RM99,800 hybrid also highlights the ambitious price of the Jazz, making the supermini, which costs an extra RM10k, look very poor value.

Some considering the RM140k Prius may have decided to cough out RM30k more for a Lexus badge and the associated luxury. Launched in late February, the RM168,000 CT 200h has found 141 new homes so far. Interestingly, the RM196,500 Luxury spec is the more popular of the two CTs with 171 sales this year.

The hybrid RX and LS haven’t caught on though – only one unit of each has been registered, likely the ones on display at Lexus Mutiara Damansara.

Combing through the figures, it’s obvious that BMW is the diesel champ, which comes as no surprise since the company is the most vocal and active proponent of modern diesel tech in the country. It’s paying off – ‘Advanced Diesel’ vehicles now account for more than 25% of vehicles delivered by BMW Group Malaysia.

In fact, the F10 520d became the second top seller in BMW’s stable for July – with 62 units sold, it’s second only to the 523i’s 74 units.

However, many still fear the infamous “poor Malaysian fuel quality” issue, which according to diesel drivers Paul and Harvinder, are unfounded. Some are put off by the cleanliness (or rather lack of) at the diesel pumps, while others don’t like the clatter, which by the way, is near inaudible in the 520d’s cabin.

Another brand racking up big diesel numbers is Hyundai. The Santa Fe SUV and Grand Starex MPV both come with modern commonrail turbodiesels; the former with Hyundai’s latest ‘R engine’ with 197 PS and 442 Nm of torque, which is a lot of grunt for the capacity.

No surprise then, that 306 buyers chose the CRDi variant (Jan-Jul) compared to 182 for the 2.4 Theta II petrol. The 2.5L Starex (526 units YTD) remains popular thanks to its huge body and unrivaled seating capacity.

So while the seeds of hybrid and diesel sown in Malaysia are beginning to see fruit, there’s still a long way to go before these alternatives become mainstream. The hybrid cause is gaining momentum, but it remains to be seen if it can be sustained when government incentives are lifted.

For diesels, despite the facts and figures strongly favouring its kind, age long prejudice and perception is hard to reverse, and we’re a long way from Europe, or as our earlier story revealed, India, in acceptance.

New Segment: Malaysian Automotive Association Vehicle Sales Data for July 2011

We’re introducing a new segment in this website to show you who are the real movers and shakers in the industry. Why does Tan Chong still sell the Sentra? How many units of the Savvy did Proton shift? Is the Proton Saga or the Perodua Myvi Malaysia’s best selling car?

You’ll get all those answers in this new regular segment. Presenting the industry sales data from the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA).

Starting from this month we will publish sales figures from each brand and each model sold in Malaysia, as submitted to MAA by the manufacturers. We kick off with data from July 2011, but have also put in the previous month’s numbers for comparison. There’s also a year-to-date (YTD) number to see how they’ve done so far in 2011.

The table includes features such as the ability to sort alphabetically as well as by number of units sold. Just click the column headers to sort. There’s also a little search field at the top right of the table so you can filter the list down to the specific model/brand you want. Bear in mind that the figures are only from official distributors, and grey imports are not included.

Instead of visiting the usual hot spots in the area, both Harvinder and Julie try the unconventional by making a stop at a traditional Malay house, which is part of the Kampung Sungai Sireh Homestay experience. At the homestay, the hosts try their hands on making the traditional ketupat snack and attempt to catch an eel.

Frankfurt preview: second-gen Bentley Continental GTC

Bentley’s Continental GTC convertible goes into its second-generation form next month, when the car makes its debut in Frankfurt. The drop-top, which replaces the current model that was introduced in 2006, will feature cues from its GT coupe sibling launched last year.

If the original Continental GTC was elegant and understated, then this one is beefier and has a more assertive presence. It also offers a more dynamic driving experience, with a wider track front and rear, sharper steering and retuned suspension helping to improve things on that front.

The all-wheel drive system features a new 40:60 rear torque bias (compared with 50:50 of the original GTC), minimising understeer during hard cornering and allowing the spirited driver to manage the car’s line and balance via precise throttle control.

At the heart of it is the 6.0 litre, twin-turbocharged W12, with a ZF 6HP28 transmission replete with QuickShift in tow. Power output has been raised from 552 hp to 567 hp and the famed Bentley ‘wave of torque’ has been increased by a further 50 Nm to 700 Nm. Performance specs include a 0-100 kph time of 4.8 seconds and a 314 kph top speed.

The new GTC’s cabin features additional rear legroom, new storage solutions and current faves such as touch-screen infotainment, automatic seat-belt presenters, Naim for Bentley premium audio and a Bentley-designed Neck Warmer for comfortable roof-down motoring.

Luxury continues to be the buzzword here, and the four-seater gets a new, even more spacious and sumptuous hand-crafted cabin, with soft-touch leather hides, an extensive range of wood veneers, cool-touch metals and deep-pile carpets. In all, 17 standard soft-touch leather hide colour choices are to be had, with six colour split combinations, complemented by a range of seven veneers, all done in house.

Twenty-inch ‘Five Spoke’ alloy wheels, wearing Pirelli P Zero 275/40 donuts, come as standard, with optional 21” wheels in three styles (‘Five Spoke Two-Piece’, ‘Seven Spoke Elegant’ and ‘Ten Spoke Propeller’) available, a first for the GTC. Going the latter route gets the 275/35 P Zero rubbers.

New Maruti Swift off to a great start, 80% ordered diesel!

Maruti Suzuki launched the new Swift in India last week, and the supermini has got off to the best possible start. Even before the price was announced at the launch, Maruti received an amazing 50,000 bookings for its latest model, and the waiting period starts from three months.

Maruti plans to sell 18,000 units of the new Swift per month, making it the market leading brand’s second biggest model in terms of volume, second only to the Alto. It’s looking like a successful sequel to the success that is the previous gen Swift, which found over 600,000 new Indian owners since it was launched back in 2005.

Here’s something more interesting: of the 50k pre orders, 80% of them were for the Swift Diesel, proving that diesel torque and economy is really catching on in the subcontinent!

The oil burner in question is a Fiat sourced 1.3-litre DDiS engine with 75 PS and 190 Nm of torque from 2,000 rpm. Maruti quotes 22.9 km/l economy, which should be a best effort cruising figure. The other option is a 1.2-litre K series petrol engine with 87 PS and 114 Nm of torque at 4,000 rpm. This one does 18.6 km/l.

Wouldn’t it be great if Suzuki introduces a diesel option when they launch the new Swift here?

Toyota Camry definitely has Hyundai’s Sonata in its sights

Well, it’s very much a case of can’t ignore any more, and making no bones about it at that – a report says that Toyota’s new seventh-gen Camry definitely has the Hyundai Sonata very much in its sights as the Japanese carmaker aims to get back on top in the US.

The Camry has been the top-selling passenger vehicle in the US for nine years, with annual sales in the market poised at the 300,000- to 400,000-unit mark over the past decade, a figure good enough to account for around 20% of Toyota’s sales there.

Of course, being the king means only one thing – there’s always going to be a slew of contenders looking to topple you. Among them has been the Sonata, which has emerged as a strong contender over the past year or so, aided by a weak Korean won. Close, but still no cigar.

The March 11 earthquake that hit Japan also hit the Camry, changing the run of play. While in 2009, the Sonata sold just one-third as many units as the Camry did, in May this year it managed to finally outsell the Camry, which suffered supply shortages as a result of the disaster.

Slated to enter the market in October, the new Camry is anticipated to bring the title back to Toyota. Still, the company isn’t hiding the fact that it has responded to the Sonata’s challenge very seriously, the Nikkei report adds.

Toyota’s engineers went over the Sonata with a fine-toothed comb, with one stating that the Hyundai’s “interior offers an outstanding touch of luxury for its price.” Sources within the company added that just before the decision was made to begin production of the new Camry, requests came about for design changes, with the Sonata very much in mind.

The Japanese automaker also had its American engineers evaluate the new North American-based model from the prototype stage. And Toyota president Akio Toyoda even went so far as to test-drive the new Camry again and again. “We’re rolling this out with 100% confidence,” he was quoted as saying. Well, looks like they worked very hard to be absolutely sure about that.

Bumper to bumper – Mazda recycles old to make new

Over in Japan, Mazda has begun recycling scrapped bumpers from end-of-life vehicles (ELV) to obtain raw material for use in new vehicle bumpers. The new technology is initially being used to make rear bumpers for the Biante minivan.

Conventionally, bumpers from cars destined for scrapping are processed into automobile shredder residue (ASR) and incinerated to recover heat energy. The new process will yield approximately 10% of material for each new bumper produced. For starters, the company is collecting bumpers from end-of-life Mazda vehicles in the Hiroshima area to obtain the necessary.

With bumpers comprising a large proportion of plastic, collecting and recycling ELV bumpers is expected to make a significant contribution to reducing waste and loss of resources, and the company says that the cost of recycling is less than the cost of purchasing new plastic. A case of ashes to ashes, bumper to bumper, indeed.

Chevrolet Malibu set to be brand’s flagship in Europe

The new Malibu is set to be Chevrolet’s European flagship model – the midsize sedan, which debuted in Shanghai in April, will make its first appearance on the continent at Frankfurt and go on sale from next year.

European customers will be able to chose between two four-cylinder engines, a 164 hp 2.0 litre petrol and a 169 hp 2.4 litre diesel, with both manual and automatic transmission options available.

Specifications for the market include eight airbags, HID headlamps and a seven-inch touch-screen radio display, with wheel sizes ranging from 17- to 18-inch options to suit an array of buyer preferences. Nine exterior colors and up to four interior colour combinations can be chosen from, depending on variant.
