Frankfurt preview: Kia’s RWD 4-door concept is called GT

Fast rising brand Kia will be bringing a dramatic rear-wheel drive four-door sports sedan to the Frankfurt show. We’ve seen some pics of the concept already, but details were scarce. Now we know that the big sedan will be called GT, thanks to leaked official pics.

Apparently, this will be the first in a series of concept cars that will see the Korean brand explore new market segments with style-led models. This approach is already in place to some extend in the brand’s main model lines – the Forte, Optima and Sportage are eye catching cars in their respective segments.

“No matter from which perspective you look at it – this concept car is roaring with energy and ready for take-off. I believe the car is a strong statement from Kia: we are ready to fast forward to an all-new chapter,” said Kia’s design boss Peter Schreyer.

As for what’s under there, Autocar UK says that it’s based on the Hyundai Genesis saloon with a big V8 engine under the hood. Don’t expect a production version of the GT in the near future though.

“We have made good progress recently. But it is now important for us to improve our brand power. Concepts like these will help a lot with that. But we are prepared to take our time. We will test plenty of ideas before we make any decisions about production,” Kia’s vice chairman and CEO, Hank Lee, told the mag.

More pics after the jump. Do you think Kia is ready to challenge the premium boys?

Hyundai and Kia are ready but the market and buyer don’t. Brand perception will be the biggest challenge for them especially in Asia. The brand itself is way underrated when their product line-up is so interesting at this moment. Some small sporty proper coupe or convertible are more ideal than the proper RWD car in boosting their brand and profitability…

    • Agree the “brand perception” is a challenge in M’sia.. and some Asia country only..
But u may wrong since there is a huge market for Hyundai-kia in other country!!!

Hyundai-kia already been a world top 4 car manufacturer, only the M’sia mind set not to accept new thing and having defensive attitude.. it may not good to hear but it is the fact..

Hyundai & Kia Brand Perception are single word “CHEAP” nothing more, just becoz they sell more cheap car doesn’t mean their brand value is high.

Infact even No. 1 Toyota brand perception can never equal to BMW, Mercedes Benz, Ferrari, Audi despite they sell less car compare to Toyota.

Even Proton can produce a Sports Car as good as Ferrari 458, it would not be salable becoz Brand perception for Proton are consider cheap car like the rest of Korean Car like KIA & Hyundai (That why u see Jeremy Clarkson TopGear catagorized Proton, Kia & Hyundai as CHEAP car).

Just becoz Bonia sell more handbag in Malaysia doesn’t mean their Brand Perception is better than LV, Gucci & Prada which sell less.

Reason people associate them self in Sports Car is for social status, be in a Sport Car with “KIA” logo simply mean cheap skate wannabe.

Infact KIA & Hyundai sales in Europe are nothing to shout about, The US are getting poorer with high uemployment rate, their would buy anything is CHEAP unlike the good old day their market are nothing to bragged about anymore.

Please let it stayed as Concept, it would be one of those car Jeremy Clarkson ranked as totally uncool n stick the photo outside the studio far2 away from the board.

I would hope KIA looses the front end for something a bit more conventional but having sampled how decent the Genesis turbo coupe end up being, I wont be complaining if this makes it to market.

Imagine that they would probably rummage through the Hyundai parts bin as usual and stick the 270hp GDI turbo 4 in.

We need Kia and not Naza, we need Hyundai and not Inokom/Sime Darby/Kah Bintang…

We will be going no where if those companies/glc are playing with us/money.

At the end of the day, we still need to remove the protectionism to have a fair fight…

Without Naza you need to pay 95K – 110K for Forte, 95K for Rondo.

Offcoz this is good for the country as the Tax & Duty suppose to collect for this car since they do not deserve National Car tax rebate as they are CBU in disguise.

  • Brand Value is very important for a Sports Car.

That’s why KIA Elan never make it (I am sure 90% of those KIA @ Korean Fanboy have never seen or even heard of KIA Elan @ rebadge Lotus Elan Roadster).

People buy KIA due to “CHEAP” price tag & nothing more, so to be seen in a “CHEAP” Brand sports car is something most people do no desire.

    KIA GT should stay “Concept”
