Chery hits export targets early, Brazil is biggest market

Chery hits export targets early, Brazil is biggest market
Other than Proton, who else uses ‘FL’ to mark a facelift? This is the Chery Tiggo FL!

There are so many car brands in China that only a visit to a Chinese motor show will open one’s eyes. But apart from a handful, most of these brands are unknown outside the country, or province. One of the better known ones is Chery, which is also China’s largest passenger vehicle exporter.

Chery seems to have the vision its peers don’t. The Anhui based state owned company exported 122,441 vehicles in the first nine months of 2011, up 80% year-on-year. This surge of exports has allowed the company to achieve its original 2011 target of 122,000 units three months ahead of schedule. For the whole year, Chery expects to ship 180,000 vehicles overseas.

Chery hits export targets early, Brazil is biggest market

Who’s buying their cars? Exports to emerging markets have been especially strong. Fellow BRIC country Brazil is Chery’s largest export market, followed by Russia and Ukraine. Chery plans to export to Europe after 2015.

They won’t go it alone. According to a German report from last month, Chery Quantum Auto, a 1.5 billion euro joint venture between Chery and Israel Corp, will build three compact models to be sold in China and exported to Europe, reaching the continent next year. The cars, developed by Magna Steyr, will be built at a new factory near Shanghai with an initial capacity of 150,000 units per year, rising eventually to 500k units.

The cars, designed to meet Western standards and expected to cost around RM46,700 to RM63,500, will be sold under a new brand called Qoros. Read our post on that here.

      Our Jaguh Kampongs??

Jaguh Kampong P1 just announced power window lifetime 10 years waranty, or 250K km, which ever come first.

Jaguh kampong P2, very busy with one basic model, 2 type of 1.3 and 1.5 engines, but plenty of variances – limited edition, special edition, sport edition, extreme edition, etc.

1 thing that you should know is that Chery is just like Proton, owned by Gov. and Chery is lucky to have richer papa (China) compared to Proton :) their earlier products scored badly in crash rating, and being sued for few times for copyright infrigment… but they have improved in term of safety.
not so long time ago, i read Mitsu would rebadge Exora and Persona to be sold in South America, which includes Brazil, for Proton to rebadge Lancer. kind of model swap. what happen? only top people in Proton could tell us…
but i do hope Proton’s global car which should be ready by next year could penetrate export markets like Chery.

what the hell.. simply put words into my mouth? the papa is rich, so i believe they have much bigger start-up funds. plus, they could reach economy of scale easily in a much bigger market, about 25 times bigger than Malaysia’s market size!
look at their earlier models, many are “copycat” to foreign designs. they’re ‘kebal’.. nobody could win the copyright case if they sue in China. and remember, they could force foreign automakers to share hybrid and EV technology. it was big in international news last year. with all the “shortcuts” you still praising chinese automakers and cursing P1?

dude, u never know what will happen, rite?
if the company or industry become soo big, any gov wouldn’t let them fall. look at Citreon and Kia. they became bankrupt during economic crisis and their gov stepped in to help, both are merged with another stronger company, so now we get Peugeot-Citreon and Hyundai-Kia.
just recently US gov bailed out GM and Chrysler which already 90-100 years old with billions of dollars. what are you going to say next?

China kaya tapi adakah kerajaan mereka tolong Chery sampai kereta import mesti dikenakan cukai?

budak crap, aku dah cakap, jangan nak tunjuk pandai kalau kurang membaca. kalau bodoh, banyakkan membaca, bukan bercakap! semakin banyak kau bercakap, makin terserlah kebodohan kau.

ini yang ditulis oleh paultan sendiri:
“Other proposed areas that Mitsubishi and Proton are in discussions about include the rebadging of the Persona and the 2009 Proton MPV as a Mitsubishi in certain markets and the joint development of an A-segment hatchback (a new Savvy-sized vehicle), but when contacted by this blog, sources in Proton indicated these additional projects are at best only in discussion stages only, and not something confirmed.”
            source: http://paultan.org/2008/12/05/next-generation-proton-waja-to-be-based-on-the-mitsubishi-lancer-platform/

dah la, malas nak layan ko dah. makin banyak ko cakap, makin jelas kebodohan ko.

somethings still missing from our proton, they hv not responded fast enuf for the world market needs, that’s why…. n dun depend on gomen protection all the time, grow up n b responsible manufacturer, fulfill current n further market needs, then u stand to gain some ground. but act fast, cause consumers dun wait. either u fulfill a current /further market need or create a need that many ppl want. that’s consumerism… forget all abt protectionism. u wan to go global, forget neopotism, crynonism…. ur EV could b the next thing the world is waiting for, develop further on that. improvement hv been seen on the saga flx, do more… like i mentioned b4, either create a need everyone wants or fulfill current/further mkt needs. still the EV sounds promising, go into high gear for this

And can you tell us which gov in this world that doesn’t practice nepotism, cronyism, whatever ism there is. Whatever the deal between Chery and Brazil is a deal between two gov, perhaps Brazil is exporting their AWACS airplanes. With the recent budget announced we can see that our gov has to rethink on their spending. Unless Proton is bought over by a filthy rich Malaysian billionaire that has no connection whatsoever to the gov, who has plenty to splash out than you might get your wishes.

for china, slow and steady win the race… admit it, proton is simply too slow and too steady.

am not asking for proton to increase their export by 80%, just a steady 10% every year is also a problem.

Proton should stop producing low quality cars, go for higher quality cars, give 5 years warranty, this will change proton’s image. come on, 25 years is more than enough.

The only open secret of this success for Chinese car company is economic of scale compared to ours. Haiya..logic maa…make sense…0.1% of 1 billion people already 1 million cars sold but in Malaysia 28 million people 1% only 280 000 cars sold. See the math?? So they can break even faster than proton which the profit will translated into more R&D capex and rapid new improved products.

yeah, like the Koreans got economy of scale of such magnitude? Sure there are probably 2 times more Koreans than Malaysians, but they have 3 – 4 national car, we have 1 – 2 (depending on how u look at things).

Yes, Koreans cars was protected, so was the Japs. But the Korean knew those are borrowed time and they use it to improve their product.

For proton, they continue to sell that outdated saga and wira coz malaysians don’t have much choices coz they are the cheapest.

            Latuk,
P1 had 70% market share 2 decades / 20 years ago. that time our market size was just around 200,000 units. Proton was able to build Tg Malim plant and aquire Lotus in 1996… at that time RM was strong, US$1 = RM2.50
Hyundai currently hold about 45-47% Korea market. that 45% is already the same size as entire Malaysian car market, which is over 600,000 units. current proton production is only around 150,000. imagine if Proton have production size as big as Hyundai.. 4 times bigger than what proton have now. definitly they can spend more on R&D and produce more models quickly.

Not lying, just half truth. You never mentiond Korean get their own car at market price. Hyundai Sonata selling at Korea for RM 60K ++ only. They deserve 95% for that. But our rebadge 15 years old Perdana still selling at around RM 100K.

      • Yeah, but korean people so patriotic that they even buy their own lousy products decades ago. They subside the exported cars so that the cars company can dump their cars in exported market. Malaysians? Ask yourselves le. Google it and you see what people wrote.

Yes. Korean have 80 million population. 1% of 80 million is equal to 800 000 units of cars. See the figure?

Its so ironic in this past few post..

    1) Naza Malaysia bring in Indian motorbike
    2) Naza Pug508 test review (which will be in Msia soon)
    3) China Chery hit export target..

Isnt it a slap to the face of all Msian who has P1/P2 how many years ahead of China? a close economy until 1990s? Dont even mention about Korean now, its only a shiok sendiri that we try to compare with korean car, where they conquering the biggest USA market now..

P1? P2? its only mean to squeeze the $$ from all Malaysian!!! period!!

  • Looks good but hopefully Chery can lift up their game in the safety count. Over here, Chery recalls two models, the J11 SUV and J1 city car due to safety concerns. They scored sub par two stars and three stars consecutively in the ANCAP. The modifications would not matter much to the results according to the safety testers as fundamentals not addressed. Here is a link to the article:

Cheap cars but you do get what you pay for. For most people, safety only counts in emergency which in most cases it is a case of a little too late.

There is no point comparing companies that operate in different environment. Eg, some say Chinese market is huge with its 1.2 billion people and ours is small. But we need to remember the competition is also very stiff in China with so many manufacturers..
Hence, every market has its own advantages and challenges..

But, personally without comparing with other companies, P1 and P2 are indeed taking its own sweet time to improve on quality and costings. Perhaps there isn’t much incentives to improve much because the demand will still be there for their car models due to government policies.
