Google Malaysia has introduced three major enhancements to Google Maps which will allow Malaysian commuters to better plan their journeys and to look up real time information – the enhancements consist of two new layers called Traffic and Transit as well as a Bahasa Malaysia interface.
Traffic, as its description suggests, provides data on real time road congestion right on the map. By turning on the Traffic layer on Maps, users can quickly see whether roads are congested or flowing freely, all based on colour coding — red for choc-a-bloc, yellow for slow moving, and green for smooth flowing. Drivers that are fairly well-versed with the roads can also use the information to plan alternative routes to their destination.
As for Transit, this one provides information on travel via the Malaysian public transportation system on Maps. Now, in areas with available transit data, if a user selects point-to-point directions, there is a third new option in addition to the familiar walking and driving directions.
Maps users will be able to view the step-by-step public transportation information, which includes bus, LRT, monorail and Komuter travel options. Users can also see where bus stops and train stations are located.
Traffic and Transit for Maps data comes from a variety of sources, including government departments of transportation, private data providers, and users of Google Maps for mobile, who contribute anonymous speed information through Google’s traffic crowdsourcing feature.
Lastly, Google Maps is now available in Bahasa Malaysia, giving Malay native speakers better accessibility and the option of interfacing and navigating with Google Maps using the language they are most comfortable with.
With 60% of Malaysians using Bahasa Malaysia as their primary language and with over 90% proficiency in the language nationwide, the localisation initiative should make it easier for Malaysians to get the most from Maps, says Google. All the enhancements are available on the desktop and mobile versions of Google Maps.

at last!!!! have been waiting this for years!! yes!! this made my day
what about a layer for ‘Police/JPJ Road block’ or ‘speed trap’ data in real time????? that’s the most important layer omg!!
Now it makes more sense to have an internet connection on the go! Quick questions though..
i) how reliable and/or valid is the information projected by Google?
ii) and what is the sampling rate of the information?
Google, please enable navigation on android devices in Malaysia. Thanks
But we still won’t get turn by turn navigation? :(
okay? how about street view? when they wanna do it?
Long waited for this..use this when traveling in Japan years ago….hopefully they will include fare in there also…
i always use google maps n its great ….sometimes things jus need to be in english and full stop….not everyting have to be translated
Still no navigation from google
This is a amazing! I hope this works well on mobile devices like android. Can’t wait for it to fully launch
Great..!! Yes Google, when can we have Navigation on Android..?
u can install modified ver of Google navigation and get turn by turn navigation. google
When Google gets the licenses to do it. Which they probably won’t, cause these licenses are so expensive. In other countries that was afaik solved by sending around the StreetView cars, which then also collected all the road data.
However perhaps Google could use Malfreemaps?
Wondering, how google do the projection of traffic? A green route can turned to red if so many people get the updated and choose to take the green route.. vise versa..there might besome time when we need to play reverse pyschology by taking those red routes..hehe
Android phones submitting their location (if you agree to) when using the Maps/Navigation software. That way Google can see how fast traffic moves (of course if an Android owners club decides to take a break and no one else with an Android phone is on that highway then it will seem like there is a traffic jam).
I have been using an app called Waze on my iPhone. Awesome free app with real time and fast response, try it out =) I think Android also can use it…
very reliable…. this morning’s traffic indication is bloody correct. unfortunately it says very jam at my place. ai…… it’s true.
This used to be my domain few years back. Let’s see if we can speculate:
1. Congestion traffic road segments. There’re several ways to implement this:
a) Google managed to integrate with the DBKL’s ITIS system consuming latest traffic info but the question is whether this traffic info would be part of the equation for street routing and navigation?
b) Google have collected time-dependent traffic data e.g. Jln Sultan Ismail would be extremely congested from 7.30am till 8.45pm, less congested from 12.30pm till 2.00pm etc. This is what Tomtom or Navteq have for their street data in Europe and North America. They can then use this as added parameters for street routing and navigation.
2. Transit dataset. Yeah they should have this by now as they’ve been engaging actively from their local partners to collect rail and buses routes, stop points and timetable. I’m not really worried about railway/lrt, but the buses transit can be challenging when the buses here won’t really follow exact route and timetable definitely would be a mess. What would be interesting if they can do pedestrian navigation that can navigate you between buildings. Some of the global data companies have this data already but remain to be seen if this has been implemented along with transit data :)
bt i prefer english, though
is this for KL only or what??
