Hello P3-21A, are you called the Proton Prevé?

Hello P3-21A, are you called the Proton Prevé?

We already know a fair bit of the soon to be launched Proton P3-21A – we have spyshots, videos of it in action, a leaked spec sheet and the estimated price. All we need now, short of Proton’s “world car” being officially launched, is a name to replace the robot sounding codename P3-21A. Well, we have one now!

This image has been circulating online, and it shows the C-segment sedan in a brochure like pose with the name “Proton Prevé” emblazoned above. So P3-21A, is your real name Proton Prevé?

We’ll need an official explanation to confirm, but “preve” means “to prove” or “proof”, which dovetails nicely with the car’s “Drive it to believe it” tagline. There’s only so much we can say, so you’ll need to “drive it to believe it”. Here’s the “proof” that we can come up with a credible world car, I can hear Proton say. In Spanish, prevé or prever means foresee or predict.

We figure that it’s not a name that will roll off Malaysian tongues easily, and there’s bound to be many different “versions” of it, but I’m sure Proton has its rationale. See you soon, Prevé!

        • It’s a Waja Replacement Model. Call it Waja. I like Proton Waja’s name and I still remember replacing the power window several times before buying a Neo. Booked 1 P3-21A during Power of 1 for my dad. It’s OK to fail as long as u learn from your failures.Part of learning process. Too many Proton haters and anti brand Malaysia. I will continue to support Proton. I bet 20 years from now, Proton will be a global player. Honda & Japanese carmakers made shitty cars during their 1st 20 years of existence.

Dude I agree with this… too many people say proton sucks just out of prejudice to the brand.

I just wish it wasn’t called Prevé though…

i have to toally disagree with you that japanese carmakers made shitty cars in their first 20 years of existence. the japs actually made damn good cars since they first started and they represented very reliable alternatives to their more expensive american, italian, british competitors at those times. add to that, their cars were also actually quite good to drive and some had more power than their competitors which had unnecessarily big engines, high consumption and low power output. by what you are saying, the toyota 2000gt, toyota stout, toyota bj, subaru 360, the prince nissan’s, honda s500, s600, s700, the various mazda’s just to name a few of the older jap cars which i think are rather charming if not exactly connoisseur collectors items. i can agree in the past 5 years japanese cars seem to have become boring but then again…most of the japanese branded cars these days aren’t even made in japan. they often compare korean and the chinese to the japanese. the koreans actually got a slow start cause initially they were making rebadged crap jap cars but lately they have been gaining leaps and bounds, kudos to them for that. for the chinese, i just don’t see them becoming a major player, unless they (somehow sadly eventually will if the economy keeps on going like that ) buy over most of the companies in the world. proton, it’d be a long time. the brand has been around for 27 years already and the progress isn’t what it could have been. 20 years and 20 years and 20 years, there isn’t time for such slow progress these days. and get your facts right sir, after all, proton was and still are rebadging japanese cars, don’t stick a knife into your own chest.

I agree with you sir. The Japanese cars somehow are more reliable from the beginning. In fact, we cannot deny the truth that Toyota or Honda cars are one of the best selling cars over the globe.
Although I have to be honest that Proton is improving nowadays, still, the major problem with proton is their poor quality control. And, most importantly their marketing strategies that selling cheaper proton car with good specs in foreign markets but selling overprice low quality car in local market! As what we call the “Pride of Nation”, the Proton isn’t making their promise to Malaysians – produce cheep but quality cars. I guess that why many Malaysians are not supporting Proton products.

Im using Volvo S40 at the moment. It’s definitely better than Proton. But shit happens. My ‘auto light’ is permanently on. I think the light sensor is dead. But I don’t care. Got my increment looking at A4 S line at the moment. Sexy shit. Blue or white.

Jap cars started before WW2 bro. They made lousy cars. Honda made its 1st car actually pick up in the 60s. Jap cars were jokebutts in US & Europe. But they learn to make better cars.

Korean Gov ban all imported cars right before liberalising the sector sometime before the turn of new century.

Give Proton a break. Its our money in there. If they go belly up shit we have to bailout again. ha2.

I did read an article about japanese automotive industry years ago. They said japanese car was crap car because they took parts from american machine and built a car. the quality was bad and it is a joke for the american. but the japs were improving until what they have today. Conclusion: early years of a car company will be very hard and they have just to keep improving and be innovative.

I’m glad Proton exists. People can get cheaper cars.

Don’t get started on the tax nonsense. It’s a good thing the government taxes imported cars. They get a steady “income” that way. I hope they increase the tax further and get money out of people who buy imports.

I think Proton should already have a permanent line of name for their models. And Proton should produce one model for a few segment Proton tend to play in, as in B-segment 1 model, C-segment 1 model, and D-segment 1 model. No more 2 models in one segment of car.

Proton probably hired some lame ass Marketing guy, who read up some where that Malaysians who buys Proton are uneducated. Hence wants new stuff with new names. Plus putting the same name on different looking cars will confuse uneducated folks.

Therefore sticking to something like Waja (internal model P3-21A) will not help build the brand or push cars.

Seriously, stick to the SAME name already will ya! Every successful car manufacturer is doing that except for Proton.

an honest effort by proton but unfortunately a lot more is expected.

for example, from the same brochure circulation the price stated for the turbo model is 75K in peninsular, and 71K in langkawi. that means… after deducting sales tax the actual car is costing like 60-62K.

that is truly amazing since a VW golf GTI landed price in malaysia is only 49K (turbocharged 2.0 with DSG, CBU, all the gadgets – incl launch control and pure exhilarating power)

common proton, cannot expect add push start button and to add 15K to the price tag!! cost of R&D and production for platform and engine is already reduced by sharing with exora

he he go check with JPJ or VW salesman. i was with a VW dealer 2 years back.

that figure is stated in the Customs form, you know.. the yellow colour document. that is required upon registration or a new car (but nowadays its E-daftar)

the Golf 1.4TSI landed price is 47K.. is VGM taking all of us for a ride..?. ha ha. it is yes and no. 1st – non-asean CBU cars are heavily penalised by import tax. this is one reason theres no point for VW to sell the standard 1.6 Golf but rather go for the top end spec.

and i was with Toyota as well… guess what? the ACV40 camry 2.4 that retails for 174K in malaysia only cost 89K without the taxes.

but will the G allows Toyota to sell Camry 2.4 at 100K.
        NOOOOOOOOOO

now, imagine what will be the cost of a Vios. he he.

fyi, proton cars also have to pay 75% excise duty + 10% sales tax. harga waja RM63k tapi kalau takde tax, waja hanya RM39k. tak percaya? cari MM2H car price, dalam list tu ada Proton Waja dengan harga tanpa tax RM38,934.50! harga Preve high spec kalau takde tax mungkin hanya sekitar RM45k.
harga di langkawi memang takde tax. tapi ia bukanlah harga sebenar. harga di langkawi adalah tinggi sebab showroom & car dealers ambil untung lebih tinggi untuk cover cost sewa, bil letrik, gaji dan sebagainya. kalau tak percaya, cuba la ronda keliling langkawi tu cari sampai dapat kereta Golf Gti harga RM49k… sedangkan inspira & lancer pun lebih RM70k, jangan mimpi la nak dapat Golf bawah RM50k!
jualan kereta di langkawi terlalu sedikit sebab rakyat tak ramai… walaupun harga kereta murah di langkawi, tak ramai yang mampu nak beli kereta kat sana.
harga prius kat US dalam RM70k sahaja. import dan eksais utk hybrid = 0% di Malaysia, so macam mana 10% sales tax menyebabkan harga prius melonjak jadi RM130k? cuba ko explain kan… bleh?

oh, sebabnya mudah saja bro. ko nak prius 80K ke?
sbb kerajaan tak mahu toyota prius harga 80K. tu aje..

kalau prius 80K – toyota vios akan mati, banyak model lain akan melingkup (latio, cruze, forte, mazda 3, mazda 2, inspira).

this is a logic so without common-sense, org tak akan faham. kalau prius 80K, vios nak jual baper? 60K? habis waja/gen2/persona nak pegi mana? 50K?? setakat beza 10K bungkus la proton… myvi… dah tak boleh turun dahh… its too low already.

owh by the way, landed price means car price sold by the manufacturer.. without adding the distributor’s profit margin too.

anyway, i like to disclose where i work so some of you may have added confidence but i rather not since i believe i may expose myself to the big bosses reading.

perhaps we can TT one day. search for alldisc and you can find me at many automotive forums.

another thins – kia spectra landed price was less than 15K in 2002. naza were FORCED to sell at 80K+ to prevent from hurting P1/P2 and the reason the late Tan Sri became super rich.

kalau nak tipu pun jangan la terlalu jauh menyimpang. ko pikir logik dulu sebelum terlalu mudah percaya cakap org. mintak bukti kalau perlu. open market value (OMV) utk Kia Spectra 2004 = +/- RM25k kalau ikut kastam singapore.

it does not make much sense, right? but the reality fact is – it is true.
cuma kau saja belum lihat lagi.

Kia boleh jual keta begitu murah sbbnya ialah they have the economy of scale. tak perlu market luar negara pun South Korea has a population of close to 70 million ppl. and cuba tengok material kualiti kereta Kia and Hyundai, check how thick is their wire harness… and then you will realise why they can be so cheap.

if cant understand that, i cant help much my friend. ko tanak percaya pun takpe. no one is forcing you to.

talking about 75% excise duty tu citer skrg, what about back then… 8 years back? 15 years back. if you dont know about this, then i’m afraid you dont really know the government of malaysia and its policies. and theres not much left i can do but refrain.

uff… kalau pricing antara insight dgn prius tak boleh bezakan.. ini situasi yg agak serius. so now i know u better. hehe

            1. prius is full hybrid – means it has a second power source other than engine and it also can generate energy that recharges back the battery. Insight and Civic Hybrid is only’mild’ hybrid. engine is on almost all time and assisted by an intergrated motor.

            2. prius is bigger than insight

            3. prius has more powerful power output but has lower FC than insight

            4. prius has 7 airbags, versus insight 2 airbag.

            5. prius has VSC (or as honda calls it VSA). previous insight dont have. facelift model i think has

            6. prius has some high tech gadget including attractive LCD display, touch tracer function on steering wheel and HUD.

That’s the problem with proton. Except for the Satria and Saga, every new model they will market it ‘in-between’. The dimension grows and it is bigger than Persona of course, but look at other manufacturers.. the FN civic is bigger than the ES, but honda still calls it Civic.

I know this car is for global market, but then again ‘Persona’ was the name for Wira in the export market. Are they trying to get rid of the bad image on previous models? ‘Preve’ sounds more glamorous? What if the Preve is a flop? later give a new name for the Preve replacement?

  • I don’t understand the people behind proton. Why don’t they stick with 1 name. Like BMW, Honda, Mercedez etc. Just keep it simple. I think the 4 categories should be:

    Proton Tiger (Young and successful)
    Proton Cougar (Family car)
    Proton Lion (Perdana replacement)
Proton Leopard (Sports car, maybe rebadge from lotus)

You’re seriously suggesting that they name a car Proton Cougar, and let the world know about it? Are you kidding, or do you really not know the colloquial meaning behind the term ‘cougar’ ?

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0
    • You know why? Because they don,t want to carry the bad reputation of the first model. For example, they just stick to juara for new mpv. But then they go for exora..so for them what is past is past.. The answer came out from their 20 years senior manager in product planning department. When i ask exactly question like you.

Nobody can stop you from being a Proton hater, but please bear in mind that a car name does not necessarily reflect how shitty a car performs. Sometimes shitty cars have cool names and vice versa.

How many people in Malaysia are going to pronounce it ‘Pray-Vey’? Take the ‘Myvi’ for instance. Myvi is pronounced ‘My-V’ but it can also be pronounced ‘Me-V’ as in the words ‘mystery” The ‘Prevé’ do not have a hope in hell of being correctly pronounced by Malaysians at large. Proton which claims to be a Malaysian effort should use Malay to name the car. I hope that Proton naming the car Prevé is just a rumour.

Sorry as l’m going to say foul words for some idiot. FYI idiots, post 1997s RM conversion no longer like it was used to be. The CHEAPEST VW Golf (not ours 1.4TSI) currently offered in Germany now (UK even dearer) is 16975.0 Euro = 69376.7255724 Malaysian Ringgit. If this idiot live in 1990s he may get Golf less than RM50,000.

Even at pre-1997s exchange rate, cheapest Golf still over RM41,000 (assume Euro1=RM2.4).

Kudos to Malaysians, you hate Proton but you can accept lawya Cherry from China. Proton definitely not a top brand, but hardly encounter stall Protons. I saw many brand new BMWs towed (without accident) at NPE, a spanking new 7er.

    I never had a Proton.

Can wait for it official launching. What ever shitty things people@haters said about Proton, one things is clear enough, they still want to catch the latest update.Hahahaha…
So call, DHF Volvo,Japs high performance, europe perfect handling and design etc2… Why are u guys here? I’m not sying that proton is already good enough and the price and spec is value for money, but give them a chance to improve. At least when I’m abroad, I still proud to see one or two proton roaming the street among other car produced by well established car makers.
I own my Neo in 2006. JJW xxxx. It has been 6 years now with 196,753 km milage clocked( running outside just to checked actual). Only encounter charging alternator, A/C condensor leak O-ring, and ECU reprogram problem others than normal wear and tear after 5 years. Wow! I might be one of the luckiest person who’s to own a proton car.
my family had used@own proton since saga, iswara, wira, satria, waja, neo and latest Inspira.most are still owned and few sold already and japs car also.no complain,Unless for service center issue la. Hahaha… Whatever it is, I still proud of proton. Go proton s2000 for the upcoming APRC. wuhoooo…..

I love Proton. Even right now,i thought if i’ve so much money or become a rich man one day,i’ll buy BM or Merc, but i still love proton. Just the matter of price that should reduce same like Japs car..that the only problem i saw. But to ignore the improvement of proton today..i’ll not.

The Reason is simple- No matter how bad it is,how cheap its dashbord was,how weird its name, IT’S STILL PROTON,IT’S US.

When it comes to performance, people compare Preve to Elantra 1.8, Altis, Civic, Fiesta, Cruze, Forte 1.8 etc

When it comes to price, people compare Preve to Almera, Vios, City etc

anyway what worries me, DS Syed Zainal has left Proton and so are important and brilliant engineers (anak tempatan, working against the caci maki, bashing sana sini in the name of passion and determination).

Its not them (the staff) tainted Proton name, its the politician. go figure adik ipar siapa yg supply power window proton yg famous sangat tu.

once again the politician has put their hands into Proton (sold to DRB Hicom)

Proton Preve will be the only proof that Proton had achieved its greatest level and peak.
