ETCM forms First Energy Networks – subsidiary to build/operate EV charging infrastructure and system

Nissan looks like its ready to up its EV game here, what with Edaran Tan Chong Motor’s recent announcement of the incorporation of a wholly-owned subsidiary called First Energy Networks. The start-up’s principal activity, according to the statement made in its filing to the Bursa, will be to build and operate the charging infrastructure and system for electric vehicles and any related facilities.

The company already has the Nissan Leaf about, though the EV isn’t running commercially, but as part of a pilot programme to create public awareness of the car and the tech. Still, the move beyond just that now looks certain, and with the formation of the new subsidiary, ETCM looks like it’s planning early for the future.

Perhaps it’s all spurred by the suggestion that the Government may pile on more incentives for hybrid and EVs. Reports indicate that the Government is looking at various avenues to help spur the uptake of such vehicles, and the incentives will supposedly be revealed when the second revision of National Automotive Policy is announced sometime this year.

  • EV and hybrid vehicles not cheap at all. How to spur the uptake for such vehicles?

Small sedan or hatch hybrid also cost almost RM100,000 despite tax-exemption. Government should look into this.

Its called Capitalism. Its business; supply and demand. The sticker price says its MSRP* If you click the disclaimer it reads partly

“…Excludes taxes, license, title and available or regionally required equipment. The Delivery, Processing and Handling Fee in AL, AR, FL, GA, LA, MS, NC, OK, SC and TX will be higher. Actual dealer price will vary.”

          Prices vary between states.

The US got also subsidize green vechicle making it even cheaper to own, unlike us zero import and excise duty tax but AP & other sales tax still apply… Yeah, in the end it still cant be own by the masses.. How many ppl can own a RM100k hybrid?

NTCM should really concentrate on bringing newer more efficient model beside promote hybrid / electric cars like this.. Building more charging point like in Petrol station, public places like Universities, shopping mall, office parking lot would be a great place for people to charge their electric cars.. But do in mind, starting from a depleted battery, about 20 hours at 110-120V (depending on amperage), approximately 7 hours at 208-240V (depending on amperage) and about 30 minutes at 480V (quick-charging station). (Google Nissan Leaf charging time)

So for those charging point, how they gonna charge the user also another issue.. While using quick-charging station, a lot of website have argue that quick-charging may also reduce the life-span of the battery..

  • Any idea when will the NEP be announced? Sometime this year, may be end of the year since the GOV is focusing on election now. Read from newspaper somewhere that the GOV is looking to give more tax exemption for Hybrid vehicle drivers…

  • If the government really really wants to promote pure electric cars, a good start is to have absolutely zero tax on such cars. And I mean zero, unlike hybrids here which actually still have form of tax charged.

After that, the second step is to begin creating a network of quick charging points, maybe nor by the road but maybe in reserved place in parking lots and petrol stations. This way, people who actually bought a pure electric vehicle in their area will be assured that they can at least make some significant distance with their electric cars.

Of course it would not be possible for such networks to be available everywhere so quickly, so maybe a good place to start is in Putrajaya. With proper encouragements and help from the government, I believe it is possible for Malaysians to start looking at electric as their main mode of transport. Especially those who works or studies nearby everyday.

    • Putrajaya is already EV and charging point ready. There are few EV moving around daily as part of the pilot programme..

  • you all think ev car is totally green. we already conduct feasibility study on the EV car usage on the road especially. you will be surprise how much the % of emission compare to new development of new Internal combustion engine such as VW bluemotion technology. those country produce electric have renewable energy and further more they generate by nuclear power plant, so how much low emission you want if in the same time we need to burn a a lot of coal and fuel to generate electric power to support the infrastructure of EV cars if we decide to change all vehicle on these road by using electric vehicle

Yes, you’re right – not completely green.

But it’s certainly greener than each and every vehicle on the road actually burning fossil fuel-lar…… as opposed to just EV.

Currently, the cost of producing EV is the major stumbling block and prices are prohibitive. And don’t even mention the cost of building the supporting infrastructure….

If prices are reasonable, I’ll leap into EV anytime.

Guys..What if the infrastructure can offer you discounted prices on anything u buy at the place you park & charge and also a rebate let say 1 hour parking Free with min 2 hours park & charge. How about you have an area dedicated for EV charging parking just like JOne card at 1utama. U dont need to drive in circles 7 times just to get a parking spots. Immediately u can get the spot to charge n park by the mobile application which offer u booking of the spot 15 mins earlier. If u all go and do ground research at JOne Card parking at 1utama. U can easily see that a lot of free spaces even when the non-Jone areas are seriously crowded.

How about when using EV through the infrastructure, you can get a personalized special offers by participating outlets such as Sushi, Chatime, GSC, TGV etc. Offers by the medium of at the charging station, mobile app installed in your smartphones and also from your email as your email is sync to the mobile.

How about government impose/encourage using EV on weekdays but weekends with ur much loved VTEC, Turbo, Nismo etc…hahah…bcoz u can easily saves cost as EV really performs in traffic. No consumptions as the EV is not moving. KL & PJ or other major towns would be cooler climate due to low carbon. I recommend you to ride a motorcycle from NKVE to tol damansara. U can immediately sense the big difference of cool between “the NKVE exit to Damansara Tol” and “just before reaching damansara tol booth”. and that is because of few big old trees. I insist of u all to try that.. The cool feel is like walking in London. Our climate now is so hot right now. I need to switch on my econ just to cool down my body.

Fuel will go up guys definitely when under BN after PRU13..but if opposition wins and lowers down the fuel as stated in Buku Jingga..That’s gonna be hard for EV..

It is a great move by ETCM to start this company. It means they really want to lead us (all of us, not just the “rich” ones) to the Journey of Zero Emission. I hope later NISSAN will start something RENAULT has been working with Better Place – A battery switching EV plus switching station in the charging network. China is doing it, and I think it should work in Malaysia too.
