Peugeot 301 – a compact global sedan for new markets

Peugeot has released the first images and information on its new 301, a compact global sedan aimed at conquering new markets. The car is set to make its debut at the Paris Motor Show in September.

The car is the first to kick off the company’s reinvention of its naming policy, which now utilises a “1” final digit for new “value for money” conquest models and permanently fixes the names of the models with an “8” final digit for future renewals, to simplify the understanding of things. As such, models will no longer change their number when they are renewed. So there won’t be a 509, by the looks of it.

Meanwhile, the company says that the 4.44 metre-long vehicle – with a 2.65 metre long wheelbase – has been developed to adapt to various conditions and extremes (cold weather, hot weather, poor roads, that sort of thing), with a promise of space, including that of the boot, which offers 506 litres in volume.

Three powertrains have been initially announced, these being a 115 hp 1.6 litre VTi four cylinder, a 72 hp 1.2 litre VTi three cylinder and a 92 hp 1.6 litre HDI four cylinder diesel, with manual and automatic transmission options in the mix. The Peugeot 301 will be the second Pug to wear the new three-cylinder 1.2 litre VTi, after the 208.

Specific kit and features will undoubtedly be announced as it gets closer to its debut, but items already mentioned for the car include ESP, ABS, up to four airbags, remote boot opening, a MP3 audio system with Bluetooth hands-free and USB connection as well as rear parking assistance.

The 301 will make its market debut on November 1, and the first country to sell it will be Turkey. This will be followed by entry into Central and Eastern Europe, Greece, the Middle East, Russia and Ukraine as well as selected South American markets.

obvious answer…from the picture, preve = outdate / 308= modern
not only interior, exterior as well

I think Haris referred to the outdated dashboard of the 301, thus for the :O gesture haha. Don’t get me wrong, this car looks fantastic from the outside, like a mini 508… but the interior is a letdown.

The Preve’s interior definitely looks better IMHO. Both 301 & Preve interior looks flat & simple, but the Preve’s dash got the ‘3 series’ flair which is elegant, while this one looks like some late 90s japanese car dashboard.

From the image, looks like its made of hard plastics, and the steering has no audio controls. Remember this is a ‘cheap’ value proposition from Peugeot. The real one that should be compared with Preve is the 408. On a positive note, it has ESC which some C-segment Japanese cars dont have. If Naza wanted to sell this car, it better retire the unpopular 207 sedan and replace it with this one with the same price.

a bit squarish, lacking the usual french flair to maximize interior space,
    but looks soild enough
Interior is something special tho …, where’d you’d spend most of your time anyway ,especially with KL traffic…

yup, not too bad for what could be a baby 508, but i sense the car’s missing a bit of that Gallic flair.

but since it’s for certain emerging markets, spec-wise most of the good stuff are all there.

should do very well here too if it ever gets here.

      agreed.

Econoboxes in europe tend to be hatchbacks but asian markets have a strange affinity to sedans. This 301 seems to be targeted at these markets. the 207 and 408 are asian only models.

I don’t remember Peugeot having a compact sedan since the 306.

A compact car is much better off being a hatch since it offers much better utility, especially when if you can only have one car, it has to do more things.

This seems to be a really nice little sedan….the interior is nice.

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0
      • agreed, when are our diesel going to be upgraded to be more competitive wt our n’bours. our nbours are all euro4 and above, even my maid’s country have better diesel qualities.

Dont start with the fuel subsidy *&%$#, what subsidy??? we already paid upfont the fuel subs thru sky high car taxes when we bought the cars, its us car buyer whom subsidise the fuels!

anyway, Pug are more towards diesels…their petrol are not so advance as their diesels (hence , issues wt its cars in msia = which are all petrols variation).

Proton, take note at the interior, dash board (IP)

Stylish design does not mean expensive cost… You pride of being able to freely design a car, and yet bland, boring, outdated dash board is fitted into your new car. You have the gift of freely designing your own car, unlike others in malaysia, so use it to amaze malaysian!

Wah !!!! Very nice looking this new Peugeot 301. Peugeot 207 sedan replacement in Malaysia? Hopefully with the 115 hp 1.6 litre VTi engine with manual and auto transmission option. ASAP early next year please !!!

    • 115hp only for the 1.6vti? the 308vti 1.6 has 120hp. why the 301 has only 115hp? don’t make sense. and what if it comes with a 4-speed auto? afaik, peugeot don’t have any 5-speed auto and their 6-speed auto is reserved for current top-of-the-line turbo models only.

I was taken aback when i saw this piece of news. It is news to me. Never heard about it before. And boy.. it does look fantastic… for a ‘compact sedan for emerging market’. It could well be a cracking car (in terms of worldwide sales).

A quick Google search reveals that this news is reported by quite a number of automotive website around the globe. And the amazing things is that, reviewers and readers, almost unanimously, genuinely like it and saw its huge sales potential for Peugeot. A strange achievement for a Peugeot.

Even reviewers and readers from market that don’t fancy this kind of car (low-cost compact sedan) and from developed market where Peugeot don’t plan to sell it, give it a warm and positive feedback. The common response it received reflect the notions that, we humans, no matter who and where we are, know a good thing when we saw it.

Personally, i like it for what is it. And to me, the Peugeot 301 is just too good for what it is for. Darn, PSA should have done this car many years ago.

But the weird things is, PSA decided to only made a left-hand drive version of it (for now). Duh..? Make a right-hand drive version quickly.

I reckon that this Peugeot 301 will be well received in Malaysia (or almost anywhere where compact sedan is appreciated).
It could sit below the 408 sedan and be the model that replace the 207 sedan.

That’s the thing. The clarification of the name change didn’t really make sense to me, it seemed to say models ending with 1 are sort of lower down the food chain compared to the models ending with 8, but yet this looks good enough to be an “8” car, not a “1” car. Perhaps we’re so used to emerging market cars looking super cheapo from the other car manufacturers.

may not have the specs to compete. the looks may be good but buyers here also look for a long spec sheet and being a basic entry model (from the report, spec doesn’t sound very encouraging and basic. even the 207 has those items), it could possibly be out specced by its competitors and even if it comes… when? no point coming years later. and all the countries mentioned indicate left hand drive only. don’t think they will make it in right hand drive as uk is not indicated in the list of countries it will be sold in.

Can you imagine the recently launched 408 with the 301 front end design? The 408 to my mind would look much better and would snugly fit into the brands ‘new face’ strategy.
If you recall, the 408 was only going to be in specific emerging markets, now look where its sold, so who knows, they may rethink about this region further down the road if it sells well.

the point is, even if it comes, when will it come? will it be too late and already outdated if and when launched in malaysia? and if or when it comes, will it have the specifications to beat the competitors? today’s b-segment buyers are a fussy lot. must have interactive screens lah, must have voice activation this n that lah, must have at least 5-speed (6-speed better!) auto lah, so many ‘must-haves’ and at a price not more than a myvi (ok, i’m exaggerating here). plus, don’t forget, they’d want a sunroof too at the price and not a penny more. i’d give this a 50-50 chance if it makes it here despite the good, elegant looks.
