New Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brake unveiled!

New Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brake unveiled!

The Mercedes-Benz CLS range has gained a new bodystyle – it’s now available as a Shooting Brake, essentially the curvy wagon body that previewed the second generation CLS as the Mercedes-Benz Shooting Brake Concept to begin with.

The aura of occasion continues inside, where Mercedes-Benz has given the CLS an interior completely unique from that of an E-Class. There are five interior colours, five trim designs and also three qualities of leather to choose from. Customers have a choice of three exclusive wood types: high-gloss brown burr walnut, high-gloss black ash and satin-finish light-brown poplar.

The interior is given an even more progressive look with the addition of piano lacquer trim elements. A completely new addition comes in the form of porcelain interior appointments which afford both CLS models a sense of luxury normally found in the S-Class.

Of course, one advantage a CLS Shooting Brake would have over the normal CLS would be the more versatile luggage area, with a load volume of between 590 to 1,550 litres. Mercedes-Benz has given that part of the car a special touch as well. There’s an optional wooden luggage compartment floor. Cherry tree wood is a classic among fine wood species and contrasts perfectly with the inlaid smoked oak and aluminium rails. It reminds me of a yacht.

Selected veneer sheets are glued and pressed together by hand in five cross-bonded layers to achieve high dimensional stability. The blanks are milled into their precise shape using a CNC machine, and the surfaces sanded to a smooth finish and waterproofed to maintain the natural beauty of the wood. Inlaid work using darker smoked oak, precisely cut into three millimetre strips using laser technology, helps to enhance the design of the wooden floor.

I have to say the E-Class wagon looks better due to the boxy styling of the car that really matches the styling of a car.Curvy wagon like this seems weird and overdone.Wagon buyers are most older than the buyers of typical sedan or 4-door coupe.I wonder what’s the target age for this CLS Wagon.

This is an old british term for estate cars – people that bought then would typically be hunters that would shoot whilst sat on the tailgate

I really liked this as a sporty estate car until someone pointed out how much it looks like a new R Class from certain angles – namely from behind and front 3/4 view

  • This is one wagon that I would gladly given up my Volvo V70XC for. Good to see the return of the Shooting Brake concept first envisaged by the Aston Martin DB5. Jaguar is releasing one too and it looks as good.

I don’t know, I draw a different distinction from the term shooting brake.

A shooting brake means a coupe with an estate end. 5 doors are usually called wagens.

But hasn’t stopped mercedes by bastardizing even the word “coupe” with a 4 door saloon so it comes at no surprise that they decided to call this a shooting brake. A minor misnomer no doubt.

Wasn’t the actual Shooting Brake concept a 3 door?
