KL Mass Rapid Transit system construction – a series of proposed alternative routes for motorists

Work on the KL Mass Rapid Transit system is underway, and Phase 1a of the project is expected to be completed in 2016. With 35 stops and four interchanges linked to existing rail services (the KTM Komuter lines at Sg Buloh and Kajang and for KL, the Putra KJ line at Pasar Seni and Star Ampang line at Maluri), there’s going to be plenty of construction over the next four years.

The areas surrounding the various MRT construction stretches are likely to see congestion, and as such, a series of alternative routes have been identified by Mass Rapid Transit Corporation (MRT Corp) and its project delivery partner MMC Gamuda KVMRT to minimise potential traffic inconvenience to road users during the project’s construction.

Thus far, a total of thirteen alternative routes in eight areas have been identified along the 51 km Sungai Buloh – Kajang (SBK) MRT alignment.

“Seven out of the eight elevated packages have been awarded, and construction works are in full force. The MRT alignment is now active with construction activities. Traffic congestion will be inevitable at several locations along the alignment in the upcoming few months,” explained MRT Corp’s director of strategic communications and public relations, Amir Mahmood Razak.

“Our job is to ensure these potential disruptions will be minimised, by identifying alternative routes for motorists so that they can avoid MRT work areas and get to their destination easily. The routes are meant to lead people away from our construction areas, not meant to be a shorter way for motorists. What we want to do is offer motorists an alternative. It is also our duty to keep the public informed about the best routes to use when they’re travelling, especially during the morning and evening peak hours,” he added.

You can view the identified alternative routes at www.mymrt.com.my or at the MRT information centres located at Kota Damansara, TTDI, KL Sentral, Kajang and Bandar Tun Hussein Onn. There’s also the MRT hotline at 1-800-82 6868.

Not sure if it is the best time to start the construction since Hari Raya is around the corner, and chances are there might be some traffic jams when people balik kampung on the roads mentioned.

Anyway, thanks for posting the alternative routes. Hopefully those balik kampung for raya or for holidays can plan properly on which route to follow either going out or coming in to KL (especially coming back after raya).

The thing about construction is, there will always be reasons to delay it one or another. At least in Malaysia, we should be thankful that its already starting, instead of being delayed.

And yes, thanks for posting the alternate routes. :)

Construction is fine and can be tolerated if not for the plain careless and shortsighted traffic management that is in place (or lack thereof ). They don’t seem to get it that by only closing certain sections of the lanes are WORST than closing the entire stretch of lane along the road. That way motorist don’t cut out and have to merge back in, causing even more traffic flow interruptions.

Is it just me or construction here take a lot longer than they would normally be.
One prime example would be for Pudu and Sultan Ismail intersection.(and the adjacent LRT station upgrades).. It’s been on construction for what feels like years now.

Hope KL public transport will be much better in 2016. Then we will have spare time to sleep in the train!

  • This is the “price” of development. traffic. I just hope at the end of the day, the MRT runs flawlessly and not breakdown for at least 15 – 20 years. Considering the construction per kilometer is the most expensive in the world by a margin of at least 30%.

Actually, most people compared the construction cost with China and say Malaysia is expensive. What most people forget or don’t know is that in China, land is so plentiful (and undeveloped) that it is fairly easy for the government to develop the land. There are few compensation cases, and building a straight line is much cheaper. In KL, building a line means maneuvering buildings and underground structures, because we are smaller and development has taken place prior. London had the underground in 1863! And went electric in 1890 (hmmm wonder how the underground was when it wasn’t electric eh?)!

I wish, they pass the management of KTM komuter to someone else (those guys running star or putra). Currently the service is unreliable.

    It’s never ending.

Construction / Jam for 2 years then jam free for next 2 years. The following 2 years construction for another project somewhere again and the cycle repeats itself year after year.

Have gone through this decades ago. It’s a never ending vicious cycle.

The best solution is to make all roads toll-free in Klang Valley then traffic will disperse better. I’m going to avoid Federal Highway at all cost from now on!

    Anthony,

The MRT website should be www.kvmrt.com.my

Actually, www.mymrt.com.my is the migrated address. the previous one is still in use, until the new website is launched. The reason is “kvmrt” was too Klang Valley centric. The company could potentially move to other Malaysian cities, in the future.

  • guess we will have to face/bear with the bad traffic till 2016-2017, and i do hope the MRT will be a success COZ we need IT. The current KL traffic is too congested without a good public transport. While waiting for the MRT to complete, I’m going to get a bike for commuting to work in KL coz can foresee the coming bad traffic the next 3-4 years till MRT is up and running.

Hmmm, the new SYM 400cc scooter looks inviting as a commuting tool (just twist & go wt enough power for safe NKVE speed) or should i just take the Kawa’s ER6N/F/Versys like most KL’s folk are using to beat the bad traffic??
