PKR launches ‘Turunkan Harga Kereta’ campaign

PKR’s aim of promising to make cars cheaper if the Pakatan Rakyat opposition pact takes over power in the upcoming general election has taken to the road, with the launch of a nationwide campaign to promote the issue.

According to reports, the party kicked off its Turunkan Harga Kereta (Lower Car Prices) campaign yesterday, which will see 50,000 vehicle stickers and flyers explaining PKR’s proposal being distributed at tollbooths throughout the country this coming weekend.

The timing coincides with the expected surge in traffic during the coming week. “The campaign will take advantage of the ‘balik kampung’ holidays in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidilfitri, so information about Keadilan’s proposal to reduce car prices by gradual abolishment of excise duties will reach the whole country,” PKR’s communications director Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad told reporters.

The logo for the campaign – which has its own Facebook page – does not represent any political element so all Malaysians, regardless of political belief and background, can unite and agree on the matter, he added.

PKR has promised to make cars a cheaper proposition for the rakyat by reducing the triple-tax burden – excise and import duties as well as sales tax – imposed on cars in the country. While slashing excise duties would cut government income by around RM8 billion, the party said that revenue could be earned through other means without having to impose additional financial burden on taxpayers, it was earlier reported.

It said that should it come into power, the party would offer a complete revamp of the National Automotive Policy (NAP) so that car prices will be made competitive and actual costs reflected, with the aim of improving the disposable income of Malaysians and reducing household debts.

How to make sure the car distributors/dealers will not telan bulat-bulat the profit from tax saved (by keeping the same selling prices despite car tax reduction)? This has happened to many of our CKD cars NOW.

These are US car prices with US duty and import tax paid, which are just like Malaysian car prices with duty and tax also paid, but here, you will see, they are much lower and less exorbitant than in Malaysia.

Bear in mind all cars are CBU (complete built up) Japan, CBU South Korea or CBU Germany.

The following cars we get here are CKD (complete knocked down) cars with more than 50% Malaysian content and “supposedly” are cheaper due to their being CKD and supporting Malaysian manufacturers.

I cannot understand, we support our own Malaysian manufacturers and beli barang buatan (buy local) Malaysia too, and yet the prices can be higher than barang buatan (made in) Japan or German, which is usually higher in quality.

And yet, to make matters worse, US people’s GDP per capita is higher than Malaysia’s and the average American earns five times more than the average Malaysian.

Every Malaysian must realise they are being cheated on car prices and have been cheated for the past 30 years.

Most Malaysians pay close to 50% of their salary for their monthly payments for their cars.

Not only do the banks get an easy ride (cause everybody is “forced” to take loans), we have to live in debt for over seven years, depriving our family of better food and clothes.

        • Dude, cars there are for lease, not for hire purchase like the cars here in Malaysia. Of course their cars are cheap, many first world countries adopt that leasing system. So there’s no point in comparing car prices here and in the US/Canada.

They lease it for 3-5 years, then return the car to be sold as ‘used cars.’

I hope this clarifies the wrong information you’ve all gotten about car prices over there in the US.

I however am in full support of this move of reducing the price of cars here.

Matt, you are completely wrong. I lived in the US. These prices are retail for everybody and not just for lease companies. Btw and fyi, Honda Accord reaches our Klang port at far less than RM$50,000. That is the price Honda Japan sells to Honda Malaysia.

Malaysian Cars Cost 3 x more than US. And yet the US car dealers are making a huge profit on each cars sold and the US government is also collecting duties and taxes on these cars. See for yourself the difference between US and Malaysia. Some QnA

Question 1: If the car prices drop will it increase number of cars on the road ?(since more people can afford to buy cars)

Not really, even if I have zillions of cars, I can only drive one at a time. Unless of course if I can clone myself to zillions of meself.

The motorcyle riders will continue to ride as usual cause that’s the best and fastest way of getting to anywhere in Malaysia, they can “cilok” here and there. Unless when the car prices drop the sizes of the car drop to the size of motorcyle…

Question 2: The government will lose 8 Billion in annual taxes so they must increase other taxes to compensate for this right?

Yeah maybe if the government is run by not so smart people.
But with better person managing the country, actually the GDP will expand.

The disposible income will increase, people will have more money to spend on clothing, good foods, and many others.

Businesses will thrive, since the demands are higher. As businesses in the country increase so do the tax collected. As the sales increase for the restaurant owners, shop owners and others the tax collected by the government will increase as well.

The 8 billion will be recouped back but this time around, the rakyats are in better position with the same amount of money for many other products and services for them. Before this huge chunk of the income is spend on paying car loan.

Question 3: If the car prices drop, then the resale value of my car will drop, how to trade in then?

In short term you might lose but in the long term you are on the winning side.

Lets say in 2006 you bought a Honda Civic 1.8 at RM115k. 90% loan @3% for 7 years = RM 1,490 . In 2012 after 6 years of paying loan, you balance is RM 17,890.

Under present Government the 2012 Civic 1.8 is RM 116. Trade value is at RM 75,000 at motortrader online. Minus the loan balance you have about RM 57,000 for downpayment. Loan at 3% for 7 years will set you RM 835 monthly.

Let say under Car Price Drop Policy, the 2012 Civic 1.8 is RM 60,000 . Honda Civic US is only RM 50,000. Trade in value might be RM 39,000 based on ratio 115,000/75,000=60,000/39,000 . Minus the loan balance you have RM 20,000 for downpayment. Loan at 3% for 7 years will set you at RM576.

Under drop car price policy you will have extra RM 259 to spend on. I have to take back what I wrote earlier, actually with the price drop, you are actually at better end.

Current government claims that RM8billion in revenue will be lost, let’s say if fuel subsidy is remove and for the sake of easy calculation, if RON95 is RM2.80/litre. If a car’s fuel tank is 40litres and requires refuelling every week and is used for 20years total expenditure for fuel is RM2.80 X 40 litres x 4 weeks x 12 months x 20 years = RM107520. Comparatively, it is still affordable and the amount saved on subsidy can be utilized for other meaningful purposes.

        • Change car more often is not a bad things. Its will make our city look clean with all newer car in city jz like in Singapore. And also with new car we will be safer driving new car with new safety technology. Furthermore, steel recycle or junkyard will increase productivity and boost up their business. Indirectly, they are giving more tax to our country and also increase the economy of Malaysia.

      • I dont think the issue of car prices matter most to the country. In fact if you have a good public transport and security you wont need a car anyway. This is clearly a political gimik to buy votes. Even high car prices in singapore people can still afford it. From a neutral point of view I think the address of the issue here has been underestimate by a new political partywho wants the votes so desperately. Hence youare not only talking about new cars but existinglycar owners or dealers who has cobtribution to the cycle of econony that runs between 2.5 billion and 7 billion a year. Scraping of taxes of cars may look interesting but it can only buy and convince people who has less know to the running economy of malaysia currently. Scenario: cut car taxes may not increase disposable income in the next 10 years. Carowners, dealers will have to spend the next 8 years holding back by paying off loan anf debts because their debt has increase vs market value. Carindustry will close to their stand still and bancruptcy will rise. Just like housing market in united states, market value decrease and debt increase. This are amature call by non experience govt. Majority of country road tax payer are existing car owners.

Hey moron! The excise duties in some countries such as Japan and Singapore are also applied for pickup trucks such as Toyota Hilux and Nissan Navara aka Frontier. Because of this, Toyota Hilux and Nissan Frontier are no longer offered in Japan, and some dealerships in Singapore didn’t import these trucks.

Reduce car price, and ….. ?? what ??

“Reduce corruption, leakage, govt overspending”….OK what can balance. Maybe this is just first stage of the campaign, we will know the bigger picture when PR announcing the mechanism to tackle the issues arise from reduction of car price. Btw won’t you happy to pay less for a car? which in turns will help you to reduce your monthly commitment and lower the loan tenure..I’m sure a lot will love too. my 2 cent.

Do you know whats the purpose of COE in Singapore for? Save your time and let me answer it for you. COE is a bidding system in which it is used to control the amount of vehicles is allowed on the road in Singapore. If there is no such system, imagine what would happen. There is nothing much to complain about in Singapore about their Public Transport. Compare it to Malaysia, it is comparing heaven and earth.

Compare our car prices to other countries (Indonesia, Thailand), you’ll understand why our cars is considered one of the highest in the world. For 50k , i can get a Myvi (at the current price) or maybe a Jazz (without excise duty). What is your choice?

Stand on your own two feet and think for yourself for a change.

I am talking about public transportation. When i was working in Singapore, i rely on it. I don’t need a car to get me to anywhere. Their public transportation is comfortable, reliable and predictable. I could own a car when i was there, doesnt mean i need too. However, as a Malaysia, i am sad that we are so way behind in terms of development.

For those that are still kept in the dark, i pity you. We might have 1st World Country facility, but most if not all of us, still have a 3rd Work thinking.

wait a second here, you’re comparing malaysia with singapore??? you do realize that a person in singapore could easily go about his life (working, leisure and so on) without having to need a car…. cuz they have a bloody good public transport system…. so i’m pretty sure the high price together with COE don’t affect the majority of singaporeans

in malaysia however, EVERYONE needs a car in their daily life… well except for the lucky few for whom our crappy public transport system seems to work….

For years the Rakyat has been burdened with high prices for cars and houses. Its time that somebody is willing to step up and do something about it rather than asking you to adjust your lifestyle all the time. You talked about car industry, what harm can it do when more people can afford cars? That would spur growth for the industry and create jobs. Don’t forget that if car prices are drastically reduced, people can afford safer cars. What we have today, if you don’t die on the road, you die having to pay your loans. If anyone should worry, it should be the Governement because they would have to have lost a lot of money from the stupid excise duty and high taxes.

Cheaper cars doesn’t necessarily means more cars. It could mean better cars and more fuel-efficient cars.

My family have 2 cars now, by necessity. If car price are reduced to half, we will still have 2 cars but most likely better and safer ones.

To compensate, the government can reduce slowly the fuel subsidy so people will drive more efficiently. Fuel smuggling will be eradicated too.

So what is the RM2billion revenue forego annually as compared to income tax revenue? In addition, S’pore has good reasons to increase tax as S’pore has very good public transportation and running an efficient government.

It’s time the G take it serious, since RON97 already float & P1 already bought by DRB-HICOM. We as end user also find it hard nowadays to buy & own a new car.. Read! Cars are not an asset, but a burden & depreciate.. If the G concern regarding the aftermath of sudden price drop, why not implement all car manufacturer to have safety feature as standard in their cars like 6 air-bags (min.), ABS & ESP standard to counter balance the price drop?

I totally agree with you. But need to highlight here that the price drop is not because for less features. The price drop is duly removal of excise duties and taxes with the complete features (you name dem airbags, ABS, ESP, VSC, etc). Not compromising for less quality for every penny we pay.

I am not a supporter of PKR. I support BN but being a Malaysian who loves Malaysia so much, I don’t necessarily agree to all BN policies and I won’t outrightly reject any new ideas introduced by others. Each has its own flaws. While I still want BN to win next GE, but a stronger opposition will sends a message to the ruling govt that they better buck-up, business is no longer as usual, and to always put rakyat’s interest first. I hope that people in this forum could digest the issue more intellectually before attacking each other with some derogatory remarks which just shows our own level of mentality. Maybe some of us here do not have the privilege of certain info, so educate us, and respect others position or opinion as well. Being a Malaysian, working in the US, makes me appreciate my country more, and how i wish Malaysian voters and politicians could reach the ideal level of political maturity. I support the idea of reducing the car price, but it has to be done in the right way bcos there are so many other implications at stake. My personal opinion is that, reducing the car price is not the number one priority in Malaysia. But the underlying issues has to be sorted out, ie where the tax money from car industry went? does it goes back to the industry? public transport systems? or subsidizing the poor in education, nutrition or social development? Even if the car prices reduced, is there a mechanism to restrict the number of cars on the road hence reduce road accidents? ie allowed only safer cars to be sold. The only way I see it, it has to be done gradually, and i don’t think 5 years is enough, i would prefers for the car price remain the same, but enforce the manufacturer to produce safer car will all state of the art safety features without incurring extra cost. and phase out ‘unsafe cars’, like scrap them and this time no restrictions like buy proton only or such other crap. Even though i fully subscribe to the idea of “take from the wealthy and give it to the poor” but only to a certain extent. we are not communist, and like it or not, we are some sort of kapitalist, but every Malaysian has our social obligation as well, and most of us here pays income tax, so naturally we contribute to the nation’s development. I just hope that people can look at the bigger picture, I know the G is looking at it too, (while the opposition will try to squeeze everything to force their way to win the GE) but sadly the results on the ground is too slow and sometimes questionable. Its their lose if other political party is using this issue for their political mileage. I just hope that if the current G is given another chance in this coming GE, they would have learned their lessons. They are already on the right track with all the MRT systems and all, I have seen and read carefully the KL Master plan, its the best plan we have albeit 10 years too late (thanks to world economic crisis) but again its a plan, we are good at planning, but could be better in executing it. And moving forward in becoming an advanced nation, we have to think of ways to have a sustainable development, an inclusive one, and also equitable to all. bigger cars, bigger engines, is old fashion, we would love to have, greener, safer and affordable way to move around, and not necessarily cars. Thats the way forward.

Even if we support PKR, we don’t have to agree with every single they do.

For example, this is a stupid idea.

A better idea is to keep car prices, BUT use the tax profits to

    1) Reduce TRAFFIC JAMS, and
    2) Improve PUBLIC TRANSPORT first

If car prices cheap > big increase of cars on roads – what is the point if you can AFFORD to buy car, but can’t drive it anywhere?

At least if public transport is improved, people will actually prefer to travel in comfortable trains and nice buses. So hassle-free and convenient, can read book, watch lenglui’s, watch movie on phone etc.

What logic is there that there will be a huge increase in cars ownership?

Bro.. Currently I am riding a modenas and I have an old altis car as well. Not all riders are not eligible to buy a car. But they are still riders because of the comfort.

I cant imagine what will happen to our environment if the car number increases,
          1) Our cities and suburb will be polluted like major metropolitans like Beijing, Chennai, Delhi etc. Increase in carbon rather than reducing it.

          2) Too much cars on the road will lead to reckless driving habits. (For people can afford if the car met accident they can replace with new cars and cause huge risks for road users).
          3) Parking will become a major problem.
          4) Fuel price will automatically increase 300% or more.

This is purely a political agenda to catch votes for coming election.. If we didnt support the local car manufacturer, who else going to support it? FYI I have planned to book exora which is really a good mpv for my family.

proton cannot expect forever to get support from malaysians. which explains why they are facing difficulties to reduce the cost of production and have to sell them high.

it is proton that need to change, by making cars that can sell in mass numbers. in europe, read carefully its all about small turbodiesel engines and 6 speed manual gearbox. not petrol and automatic like the majority of cars sold by proton now.

Exactly which I keep saying the public transportation needs to be better. But that doesn’t mean you ignore our import taxes.

“There is 10 drivers with 10 cars out there at the current car price. If the car price is further reduce, does it mean, there will be 10 drivers with 20 cars because the price has been reduced??
What logic is there that there will be a huge increase in cars ownership?” another Malaysian with short term mentality and selfish thinking. First of all your statement of 10 drivers with 20 cars don’t make sense, but have you thought of people on public transportation? People on motorcycles? Fresh graduates who usually just use back their parents old car, instead of thinking of purchasing their OWN one? The nation consist not only of people with cars as their mode of transportation. Think of others. There is no harm for those who would want to obtain a car from their public transportation, motorcycle use because it’s more convenient, safer, etc. Imagine the influx of cars that we would suffer from a conjestion crisis like London. The aim is to give the nation a choice, a car when you truly feel the need is great, or efficient enough public transportation which benefits not only Malaysia, but the world in the long run.

BalanceD, there are 10 drivers who can afford to buy 10 cars now. But there’s actually more who can drive but can’t afford to buy cars. I think there are still a lot of household who can only afford 1 car per family (wife drives, hubby end up having to ride kapchais). If car price drops, means households which now can afford only 1 car, maybe can buy 2. Those who already have 2, maybe can get a 3rd for children. So government must also think ways to mitigate problems if there are too many cars on our road

The government should make a Law lah.. 1 person can only own 1 car.. if they buy the second & third car then the 300% tax should apply… same goes to property. 1 person under their name can only owns 3 properties. Otherwise the rich people will buy 10 houses and rent or resell the houses double or triple the prices they bought. Because of this the property prices increased.. How the low & middle income people can afford to buy house especially in Klang valley. Say what?? Rakyat didahulukan?

I definitely agree on your suggestion. Bringing the car price down seems like a populist move. I, however prefer that the excess tax collected be used for public transport (imagine double track high speed train covering the whole Malaysia peninsular). This , I believe, will be much better than cheap car prices.

And for the public transport, do you just improve KL traffic? How about ppl in other states? Traffic and all also depends on urban planning and cost of MRT is to exorbitantly HIGH with the markup.. It’s not that we can’t improve the traffic, just due to wastage, corruption that is causing the cost so expensive.. Look at reports, How much to built train system in China, India compared with KL, or better still check GErmany train cost… Unless people wake up, and know what really going on, we will forever be going downhill, and u want your grandchild, not being able to find a job?

Guys, let stop coming up with some stupid comments when you have no vision. This is about a chain reaction in the world that we are in which no competition = no improvement. Bare in mind that a positive result is much more important than a suffering progress! There is always pro and con when things happened, lets c,

when car price drop, why do you think ppl is going for getting own vehicles if public transport is good enuff for them to travel around, instead choose to stuck in traffics for hours. But current public transports quality sucks… When revenue drop, public transport shall look into how to improve and more routes, better services and etc. Thats when citizen gains benefit. By that time, ppl will have their choice when both can benefits them well for those who love driving, go ahead and take your chance whether to stuck in JAM or chill out with public transport with less hassle. NOT EVERYBODY LOVE DRIVING OR NICE CAR BUT EVERYBODY WOULD LOVE CHEAP NICE CAR!

if you have the vision, u can even think of more possibilities and lets hope the final result is good.

My point is, lets the competition make the change. For cars like Proton compare to Toyota when price is almost the same, same goes to politics.

        Just my 2 cent

The idea is NOT to remove tax all together but to lower it. So, with the high prices of cars due to all the taxes and what not, do we have World Class roads? Do we have proper public transportation? Do we have toll free highways? Answer is NO. Since, we are paying more and getting nothing. I might as well Pay less and get nothing. But then again, how sure are you nothing will be done to address the jams and public transportation even with the reduction of car prices? Did the article mention they will not do that?

I quite agree with ur public transportation & toll free highways. But as for the roads, we have far off better roads than neighboring countries like Thai & Indos. Even S’porean admits that we have good highway roads (minus the toll fees). The trouble is NOT the road but our road system got problems that causes massive traffic jams, potholes, etc. The entire system in current Gov is Never integrated & that has caused Rakyat a heavy expense. Eg. Recalled the speed trap cameras installed many years back? Why are we purchase new & better ones? Sounds redundant, right? I remembered that TNB also bided for broadband but failed. And TNB currently has the fibre optical infrastructure…you may notice that comes with single cable on each side at the highest point traveling through every electrical transmission towers

IMHO, if base on this rafizi’s article, abrupt changes to current pricing would be a bad idea.

Regardless whether this is merely political gimmicks by PKR, my view on this:

        1. It is a fact that even P1 & P2 cars are being tax at least 85%, I really prefer this being reduced gradually so that more rakyat can afford to buy cars (or at least buy a viva/myvi/saga/persona/preve/oxora for what it actually worth).

        2. The G (especially current G really need to manage our beloved Bolehland with integrity, transparency, good governance and efficiency.

        3. G expenditures especially mega projects shall go through detailed cost estimates, being challenged, undergo cost risk assessment. Tendering shall undergo screening of bidders, open tendering exercises, thorough techno-comm evaluations. All these need to made know to public including contractor’s performance and progress.

        3. The current G must be responsible and take immediate action to prevent/minimize Illicit Financial Flows http://iffdec2011.gfintegrity.org/ which the number is very staggering and alarming.

        4. The current G must be responsible and take immediate actions to prevent further leakages from fraud/corruption based on recent General Audit Report.

Only with this, the loss of RM8b income per year from car taxes means nothing actually. Moreover, this loss can be replaced via other means/sectors where rakyat’s quality of living are elevated and have more purchasing power.

        Just my seposen.

There are several measure to discourage drivers
if petrol subsidy is removed i think most people will be cautious about their usage n therefore will resort to public transport when ever possible.

The PKR proposal is too simplistic. In the ideal world it can happen overnight. But what is the impact to the car industry in general? If you minus something, you will also need to add something. Of course I would be happy to have cheaper cars, but a more detailed study must be done and not seen merely as a political ploy for the coming GE.

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0
    • Leonardo is right, the proposal is just too simplistic without any detailed studies of the advantages and disadvantages of the proposed move.

the mentality of most malaysians are, if the taxes and duties were removed, people would start buying foreign makes. so what bad does it do then, you ask? our national carmakers will close down. so? it doesn’t affect me, even better still, we have less cronies to feed (assuming they are) you say. BUT, are you aware of the fact that, there are hundred thousands of people who are employed in the national car industry and its supply chain, so imagine, if these people were to be displaced off their jobs?? you tell me the consequences.

thats not all, the average joe like you and me, or the 2nd hand car dealers, who have all bought or took ownership of foreign makes, will then have the values of their cars immediately slashed. we consumers will probably just make do with it, but what about mr. wong and mr. ahmad who earns a living selling 2nd hand cars? you tell me.

word of caution, don’t be so shortsighted, drastically changing a policy requires more in-depth studies than just campaigning it. and don’t be so selfish, just because you want a foreign make at a more affordable price, other people would suffer just to satisfy your cravings for luxury.

but when the dust settles, i would take a good car at lower prices anyday, and just hope that it’s not at the expense of someone elses’ livelihood.

Buy a 20 km/l car to replace your 10 km/l car, so your total fuel price will stay the same. The RM 50k you saved on the purchase price (and interest)of the car can be used to offset your more expensive nasi ayam.

      • Please dont accuse others of being a moron when you are the very epitome of it. Your “scenarios” are far too simplistic, worthy of one thought up by a moron. Perhaps if you delve deeper you would start to see the possible ramifications.

Lets expand on your scenario B. You pay much less for the same crappy car, but like some smarter people has mentioned above, when you minus something, you have to add back something. Perhaps you are familiar with accounting? If you are not at least I hope you understand the concept of balancing.

So lets say we pay lesser for a car, we may have to end up paying more for petrol. In another sense, our cash flow does not improve at all. The difference is that the cash is channelled into other avenues instead, which eventually ends up into the alleged “cronies” pockets.

Because to come up with such a proposal would need MAJOR LOADS OF PLANNING and to actually have observation of the current financial situation of the country before suggesting such a thing. AND THIS WILL OBVIOUSLY TAKE TIME.

Also, in politics, you have to play your cards right and be strategic. Not just throw your entire hand for your opponent to see. I’m sure they have a reason why to make an announcement at such a time (when: new cars are coming out, stupid VW Polo GTI price hike, etc.).

To make it easy, just take those complain above about cheaper car price and subsititute “car” with “property” where applicable.

Sorry if you are a house-owner, but real ones will agree property values does not only appreciate/depreciate when govt introduces new schemes or whatsoever but, when there is a nationwide economical upturn/downturn, property location, type of build, size, availability of public amenities and lots more..and if at all i were to make the change like u simply suggested, i will still put ‘houses’ instead of ‘properties’ purposely because i think fighting for lower house(residential) prices are more important than fighting for lower commercial, industrial, agricultural, or even development lands.,and CARS absolutely

There is this thing call something like GST/VAT,hmmmpppp lets check with mr google, OOOOOOoo it seems only malaysia and burma out of so many countries in asia have not adopted, even when systems and examples to how to use are all in place. With it EVERYONE is equal AND, when adopt, generally business and personal income tax is reduce…… such a good thing for the people, big income for the govt, yet BN does not want to adopt, Hmmmmmmp. Only pay so much tax when you spend so much…….. THINK! Don’t be spoon fed.

PS. business do not need to increase price because of gst. As gst is pass on to end user, Foods are generally not included. and lots of nation allow certain % of vat/gst claim back or deducted from the year end income tax.

“While slashing excise duties would cut government income by around RM8 billion, the party said that revenue could be earned through other means without having to impose additional financial burden on taxpayers, it was earlier reported.”

This is just a mere straight talk, and I am not convinced by this. Why not just abolish fuel subsidies altogether. Malaysians have been living in a cocoon (from oil price fluctuation) for too long while the rest of the world is grappling with ever increasing oil price and a threat of passing peak oil production.

Sorry for saying this but this is the truth. We want more sustainable, yes… buy more fuel efficient cars (hybrids, EVs, clean diesel etc.) OR just force the state and local governments to improve public transportation. Depending on Federal alone is not the ultimate solution.

Those individuals in business will not have an urgent need to mark-up unnecessarily on what they produce eg houses….with living espenses reduced and with the rakyat having more at their disposal to spend, we have increase Domestic Spending to spur the economy further. Also as living costs are contained, we can gradually improve our labour costs making our country attractive again to FDI..

Actually, what marina said it true. Because we have proton and perodua, G have no choice to increase import cars.

If import cars is lower/almost same price with national car, no body will but perodua/proton.

Everything is about nationalism, if you support M’sian car industries, make sure import car is higher than local car. If you not support, you are not nationalism to our country.

P1 and P2 existence is to supposedly to make malaysians people proud to have their own car manufacturer (design, build, assemble by own)…(not including P2 which is always rebranding from daihatsu)…oh yeah forgot that P1 also started their business by rebranding mitsu cars…but started from Gen-2 cars (not including Inspira),they design the car themselves plus make the engines themselves….that something that at least malaysian people should be proud rather than Thai or Singa people which used brand not from their own country…

now about the taxes, yes i do believe it shouldn`t be that damn high…maybe as many people as you guys said, the money goes to the cronies but don`t blame on the P1 or P2 people that`s working there.heck if you guys were on their shoes what would you do (i`m just saying but i`m not P1 nor P2 employee).beside i do belive if you guys were the minister and had the opportunity to get chances money to goes in your pocket surely you`ll do (not many peoples are so sincerely nowadays will fight for other peoples,i`m just saying again)

Tell me who will feel proud of driving m’sian car. Some even change the proton emblem to Mits emblem. The fact is they don’t have any choice. They will have more choice if car prices are reduced.

In Japan during 1970, Japanese people still using their own brand car compare to BMW< Mercedes, etc. Even though their car is not as good as other outsider brand in term of quality, but with the support by their own people and car engineer, they work hard and make an establish brand in the world now.

In M'sia is different. If get extra money, buy expensive car like BMW. The worst part, you will say P1 and P2 is useless, patut ttup kedai. So, that is showing ur benchmark or your nationalism.

Not to mention the technology it gives to us and more jobs for skilled and professionals mechatronic technicians, manufacturing engineers, automotive engineers, statistician.

Just because of your lust to get imports, you are willing to let your countrymen without a job.

Reducing the import and Excise duty by a few percent, I agree.

To remove it totally, hell no. Unless they have a convincing countermeasure plan, that can ensure Local Automotive Industry is not affected.

I will take a bus to work if i do not have to be canned like sardine. However, i will still get a cayman as a third car if it is cheaper but this is selfish of me. So with hindsight, keep the tax slightly lower and improve our infra. Force p1 and p2 to provide better cars. We still need to take care of our own. Btw i am an architect and do not work for the car industry. As for property, we need to control speculation. I pity the younger generation who cannot buy a flat.

I support this as well! But what is the “catch”? I have heard speculation that interest rates is going to jump due to high demand for car loans. If interest rates is high, the monthnly installement would not be any cheaper.

A good example is Australia where car prices are cheap, petrol prices are floated. The car loan rate is between 10% to 12% a year!

Nonetheless it is still a good proposal by PKR.

it’s a good proposal to drop car prices but by how much ? 10% 20% 30%…..this is inline with ‘peoples…first’ spirit..BUT

how many manufacturers are willing to lose something for nothing in return ????

in the business world, bear in mind that it is logical that if car price are reduced , there will always be an increase in other areas which will be reflected in maintenance cost, spare parts, which somehow ‘hidden’. Bank interest may no longer be 2%-3%. Overall total cost of owning a car may not change much

even in Brunei, cars are cheaper but bank interest is about 7%.

Off topic, more importantly, why PKR keep quiet about significant surge in HOUSE price ? Why no proposed action to keep HOUSE price down ?

the reduction in car price doesnt come from the car companies, but rather the excise duty (which is a standard 70% for all cars). they dont lose, and when they start to pass the savings to consumers… they will surely get more sales.

when toyota announce the new vios is 62K, honda will follow by saying honda city is at 65K but better spec.

      the people win.

on the house prices, there are many external factors beyond control like:-

      1. many property owners are taking advantage by selling high, but there is good demand and limited supply and this is something any government cannot control.

      2. many properties are sold by agents especially in klang valley and those agents are actually the one responsible for marking up prices to their benefits.

      3. ppl keep on buying properties at ridiculous price, if the buying stops the selling at crazy prices will too.

Curious.. What would happen to the value for car that had been bought? Let say I’ve bought a car on 2011 with 7 years tenure. If the tax abolished/reduced, will my car’s value will be dropping to nothing? Am I stuck with a 7 year loan and cannot tolak my car to get the new one?

If you have bought a decent & reliable car, i am sure it will serve you the whole 7 years. sure, the resale value will drop but once you paid off the car, you’ll still be able to get some returns when you sold it. a bitter pill to swallow but in return, you’ll be able to buy a BETTER car with the same price or lower. OR, buy a similarly decent car but cheaper in price hence lower monthly installment or shorter loan tenure.
Unfortunately many Malaysians do not see the bigger picture.

thats what our grandfathers did (sacrifice to come all the way from China and India, and for the Malays to fight colonialism by the Portuguese and the Dutch). lets do the same thing, avoid being selfish.

Agree. Better sell car now before price drop like crazy. We ride kapchai for awhile, save money on fuel too. Then when PKR wins, car price drops, we all buy Mercs and Beemers. Or we can stick to buying Proton or other cheaper cars, and use the disposable income to invest in houses (and house prices will go up).

Those who currently can’t afford to buy a car (like one of my staff who got his car loan rejected because gaji tak cukup tinggi to even buy a the lowest spec Viva), can at least after this get a car, any car. Those who stuck with 7 year loan, nothing much can do but just look enviously at those brand new cars driven buy people who previously can’t afford to buy a car. Big city living style can be seen all over the country, as even the old kampung households should have at least 2 cars.

There will be double the number of cars on the road. Traffic jam got worse. Air pollution got worse. Then we all come to our senses, ditch the cars and ride bicycle. What a happy ending.

Friends. People here talk about looking at the big picture. But I ask you, are you all satisfied with the CURRENT BIG PICTURE??

There are pros and cons, and everything must be balanced at the expense of either the rakyat or the politicians. Which one are you? Who comes first? This may be a desparate attempt at gaining votes, but can we blame them? Its something most people have wanted for so long.

Now the current scenario is – too expensive cars, malaysians deep in debts and less income to save. Proposal for cheaper cars, less loan interest and more money saved is becoming reality. Why not? But hey, let’s look at the big picture.. :p

Understand this, RM8b is nothing to sniff at, but then again, are we able to see the improvements in the country from this number? For every RM1 paid to govt, you guess how much of that really goes to rakyat? This proposal is without discrimination and prejudice and applies to every Malaysian to benefit. Still want to look at big picture?

Also, no point comparing other countries here coz Malaysia Boleh in every respect! All others are irrelevant.

If this does go through, the next step is remove fuel subsidy.
    Advantage:
Country saves the money lost from removing taxes
Encourage people to purchase fuel efficient vehicles
No issue on bringing in high quality fuel
Reduce emission as people will depend less on cars to reduce spending on fuel

So yeah i think removing taxes is feasible
Not to mention along with that protection for Proton also goes out the window

I rather pay less for car now,and even when food prices increase i m sure i can afford it cuz i have greater disposable income now.
Plus without the taxes i can choose to buy a very fuel efficient car anyway

If you unable to compete in the open market. I suggest Malaysia to end up the business. Singapore is better than us but they don’t feel itchy on their back-side to produce their own car like Malaysia did. What a shame if you couldn’t compete and just simply raise the taxes.

Before you all go goo-goo-ga-ga over this, I suggest you see it from another point of view. Before I say anything, I just want to put on record that I have always supported PR’s struggle against this corrupt government. BUT, there are things I don’t agree with them and this is one of them.

Sure, paying less for cars is a good thing. But think about it, I am sure most of you who read/write in this forum own cars. Would you still be happy to know if overnight they remove all the taxes for new cars, how much would YOUR current car be worth? A Saga BLM (like mine), would’ve easily dropped in value by 20-30%. Then what? I can’t trade in my current car to buy a cheaper car because I have to service a 7 year loan for it. Which by now means I am servicing a fat loan for a car which has just devalued significantly. What happened to the 10K (example) i put on my Down-payment? GONE! I can’t sell my car because the value of my car has gone below my outstanding loan amount. So I am stuck to service the remaining tenure of my loan until the loan is paid up.

Fair enough, they may have a plan. But if the plan focuses on FUTURE car prices and not so much on CURRENT car prices, it actually burdens the rakyat more, not to mention all the 2nd car dealers in the country. I hope Dato’ Seri Anwar and co. can and will come up with a solution to address current car owners’ fears.

      compared to Mahathir’s yearly budget= 60-70 billion.

Hence…NAJIB spends 4 times more than Mahathir to run this country….That’s why our hutang is RECORD HIGH.

Reducing car tax for sure had to be done step by step if PR is to implement this. You need to create a soft lander for those ppl who are still paying car loans. We are suppose to cut down the car tax by 2015, to me, the current government is doing nothing about it, what we see is the car actually getting more expensive for some with the mask of ‘face lift’, ‘limited edition’, etc.
With the lower on car tax, the petrol subsidy should be gradually removed too. So you pay more petrol if you use more of your car, this is to deal with the situation that there will be more cars on the road. Anyhow, the money you saved for a cheaper car is good enough for you to pay for lots of petrol.
People have been burdened very much by having a car in Malaysia, given our rising living cost, high car price, it is time we put things into balance. No point protecting a useless ‘National car’ if they don’t beef up and face the true competition. >25 yrs of protection is more than enough, time to stand up and walk on your own. Don’t worry about ppl or suppliers losing their jobs, this is because the more competitive one will survive. Having new car industry building factory in Malaysia, it will create new jobs.

If manufacturer increases the car price, is it the govt’s fault?
Even if they abolish all taxes for car, the manufacturers will abolish entry level models and only sell high level models which again defeats the purpose of abolishing taxes.

Matlamat 1: Meningkatkan pendapatan bolehguna rakyat

Matlamat 4: Menjamin kebajikan pekerja-pekerja industri automotif

Matlamat 5: Pengurangan jumlah kenderaan persendirian

rather than reducing the car price might as well put their effort in doing something that is more necessity to the rakyat, free water, lowering house prices, controlling the inflation etc. Not all people living in malaysia really need a car, what they really need is food on the table and roof over their heads.

By lowering the price, u get to lower the amount of loan u’re paying. Hence, more food to feed. And also more money to buy house. Anyway, this is one method to a better life for the rakyat. Doctrine by the G, look 1 thing at a time. Like bantuan br1m rm500 so good, but don’t look at the cost of living increased. So, berterima kasih for br1m n forget bout the cost of living. Hehe. Look at the bigger pic bro.

do you think everybody needs a car? youre the ones who need to look at a bigger picture. With more car on the road of coz it will increase demand for more fuel –> will this still be subsidised? with higher demand for fuel do you think our current production of fuel still can cope with it? do you think that the price will stay still? with the increase in fuel (if not subsidised) then the price for other consumables will increase also, will this then be subsidised? Am not supporting nor against PR but there are more things in life rather than car prices.

In a way youre right, lower car prices and lower obligation monthly hence more money to buy food and shelter. But with the above ripple effect, will the subsidy still in tact? will the extra money derived from lower monthly obligation is enough to compensate the ripple effect?

increasing petrol prices by removing subsidy will have huge impact to the rakyat also. roti canai become RM10. teh tarik become RM8…. :(

people who don’t change cars will end up being hit. people who consume a lot of goods and services will end up being hit harder (maybe harder than the savings they gain from buying a cheaper car).

Less excise duty = less income for gov
Less income for gov = less unnecessary+unreasonable expenses

why must the gov have to sort out the lost from excise duty, if you can buy a pen with a right price. easy gain, and everyone wins!

I think this is the long-awaited wake-up kick-in-the-rear…which the long-suffering rakyat has called for, and it seems PKR has picked up the baton…

The government initially signed the ASEAN Free Trade Agreement WAY BACK IN 1992…but only decided put its John Hancock to paper IN 2008…yet Malaysia continue to disregard the Common Effective Preferential Tariff (CEPT) agreed and adopted by ASEAN member countries. The government is still handing rebates up to 50% to Proton on top of the engine-capacity-related Excise Duty (which can be anywhere between 75% – 105%) imposed on new non-national car models.

If the CEPT agreement was honoured and adopted, import duty for cars would have been 0% after 2010 under AFTA. Which means an ASEAN-assembled Honda for example, would cost just 10% more than a comparable Proton here…

Unsurprisingly ASEAN members are not very happy with us…well, who can blame them? Malaysia went against free-trade regulations that was agreed upon…because it might put Proton on a ‘level playing field’…then WHY sign on in the first place if you have no intention of keeping it…?

How long do we need to spoon feed Proton and shun our ASEAN neighbours…? Proton bukan kecik lagi, dah besar panjang…why still need the big G to hold your hand after more than 25 years…? If you still can’t compete on a level playing field until now, maybe it’s time for Proton to consider other options…

I don’t have any political leanings…but like most Malaysians, I only want the powers that be to provide what’s best for us – the rakyat…so I’m not saying PKR’s Turunkan Harga Kereta battle call will become a utopian reality…there’s so many factors at play here…but it will make a LOT OF NOISE…and also gain much support from many of us who long to own and enjoy quality cars minus the ridiculous sticker prices…So I do believe PKR have found their magic ticket…and with the GE just right around the bend…who knows…

Cheaper priced car good la. But to curb overflow of cars on the road to me is easy. 1st, increase insurance premium according to age n driving experience. 2nd, road tax is based on C02 emission n coupled with class CC (higher co2 n high CC pay more). 3rd, parts r taxed at higher rate so that it discourage the usage of cars. 4th, public transport must be wide n well connected. 5th, increase the age of license holder to 21. All this will if implemented, will be fair to all current n future road n public transport users. My 2 cents.

No tax = Malaysian will buy conti cars? LoL. So u mean those in US will only buy conti cars? By your logic All non conti car manufacturers can Tutup kedai rite? Let me teach u, rule of thumb is to spend not more than 1/4 of your take back home pay for car installment. Lets say u take back home pay is 6k, limit car installment to 1.5k/month. With this price now u can get a Civic range, u can forget about conti. With no tax you pay this price u can own a BMW 3 series a better more efficient & safer car. It’s about quality of life we will get. If u pandai kira, instead of paying 1.5k / month previously u can now pay less for the civic. Yes people will still take loan. Again if people don’t take loan bank will die la do u know a big portion of bank income come from loans?

Reading through some of the comments really makes me wonder what kind of mindset some Malaysians have. There are many people who are worried about the after effects of reducing car prices by slashing the tax and excise duty. Come on, we are not against local car makers or hope they go bust. By reducing car prices, it will reduce the burden of most Malaysians. Whether they end up buying a Perodua or a Porsche its entirely up to them and their pocket. Part of the reason car prices in Malaysia were jacked up is to PROTECT the local car makers. But we have seen long enough that the protection is not doing any good to the companies to be competitive. Maybe the reduction of car prices will be a wake up call for them to buck up and produce better quality and affordable cars.

For those who worry about traffic jams, well you can always ride a bicycle or walk if you think you’re willing to do your part to help solve the traffic congestion.

This is called the “protongkat” effect: Those relying on govt crutches must be saved at all costs to the detriment of the majority.

will only be interested in this when they fully explain the outline of their plan..until then, this is just another political gimmick..remember obama populist move during his campaign era and what effect it brings the USA now..the country is in debt to cover for the health benefits promised by obama during his campaign, which is one of his populist move to win the crowd..i want to know first how PR plan to do this..and another thing, despite having poor public transport, please stop comparing our public transport to singapore..the same logic of country size applies..they are small, thus, easier for them to plan and manage an efficient public transport..same goes with car, they are small, thus have to pay more expensive for car because it takes up space..
a lot of factors come into play when they want to reduce the car price…what will happen to 2nd hand car industry..what will happen to finance business, what will happen to chop shop owners, what will happen to our own automotive car industry? what will happen to their workers? we are talking about millions if all those industry are taken into account..i really hope this move can be a reality but i hope it won’t bring some bad side effects just because it is done to win the vote of peoples..

Now it is time somebody realised and start to do something about car prices which has already gone way too expensive. The present govt already taken the rakyat for a ride for far too long. It is time we realise the national car policy does not benefit the rakyat but burden the rakyat more and only feed the cronies who married many wives and drives Porche & Merc.

I think most of the educated Malaysian can think about it, no need to ask PKR. There’s a lot more than the propaganda spread by BN media and BN mentally educated people like you. To gain something of a greater objectives there’s always a need for sacrifices. No need for listing of the benefits please do research on your own. Just read a comment on top saying kapcai people will still ride on bike if car price goes down. Nope, not through. Believe me, this is human nature. If they can afford it, they will buy it.

What we need is real projection of value to good and service.

So, car price may be high, lets bring it down and have it taxed reasonably. In our way to become high income and developed nation, we must do away with importing reconditioned cars. Instead, we should be the one sending our 2nd hand cars to say, Myanmar or India.

And like it or not, too, fuel subsidy must go away. Let it float at market value. Those should be helped can be helped by giving rebates or coupon, but that is also gradually reduced, to teach them to be independent. Same for cooking gas, flour, sugar, rice, and a host of other subsidized items. All these subsidy must go.

Similar to developed nation such as UK. Car is cheap, income tax is high (at 40%), fuel price is floated (only to be helped by favorable currency exchange rate), yet their production is double that of Malaysia (easiest reference is wikipedia). Then, there’s VAT.

We want higher income from our employers, so do the Indonesia maids. It is not always a one way street kind of deal.

Politically, it may be good to pressure government, whatmore with election nearing. But, I certainly do hope that PKR can give free pre-school education first as promised in their 2008 manifesto before moving on to bigger idea.

What makes we worry is that these people, they pop up with new ideas every once in a while. Every single issues must be looked in totality. Look at your own boss, if you ask for a raise, he will have to make sure that there’s enough money to sustain the company. He will have to see whether by giving you the extra few hundreds, there will be performance increase by you. Not to mention too, how about the rest of your colleague, do they deserve it as well? And when you got the raise, it is always at the expense of something else, ie company coffer.

When PKR talk about lowering tax, how is it going to recoupe the lost government income? Cut down Inefficiencies? Don’t give generalized answer. Our healthcare spending is at RM13 billion every year and we are struggling to maintain 30% authentic drugs, that includes the ones for your elderlies who can’t afford to buy that RM200 a pil for their heart medication or RM1500 for an MRI scan for your brain cancer. Our public education system are heavily subsidized. Our security personnel needs to be paid. Our public infrastructure needs to be maintained. The public servants are asking for raise too. And there’s money need to be saved during rainy days, ie during economic slowdown. All these problems are inter-related.

I hope Malaysians are being realistic. Life isn’t just about cheap cars.

This is a more realistic post, compared to others. Frankly, most of us have more pressing concerns right now with the coming economic slowdown across the world. Although I support lower car prices, but it must be done in a more holistic manner because it concerns government revenue. All I see is just a statement from PKR going to lower car prices. The reduced tax will be compensated through other means. What other means? GST? Discard fuel subsidies? Discard other subsidies like food, education, health, etc? Do any of you know the impact these will have, compared to car prices? When the time comes, sure, we will have low car prices, but we won’t be able to afford a car by then. Look at other developing countries with low car prices. Do they really have so much extra money to spend? My point is, whenever any of these politicians come up with a policy or campaign, they should think it through. Not just do it for cheap publicity. Cheap car prices, I want. Now tell me how it’s going to be done!

But this PKR’s proposal should be limited to cars below 1,600 cc only

Above that limit either maintain the current tax or increase it to recover the lost RM8 billion tax revenue

Also limit car buyers to keep their cars(with new lower tax) at least 5 years before selling it to prevent abuse (like Langkawi Labuan cars rule)

Anyone that oppose this proposal means they’re happy to see poor income car buyers being slaughtered with crazy 75% duties

Are you happy that poor income folks keep on being slaughtered by NAP?

This campaign will only benefit the wealthiest and average citizen, I don’t see how it will benefit all range of citizen, especially the needy. You all who can afford your car sure like this kind of janji, you are all blinded by their gula-gula. Dont eat to much, you might get your leg cut.

It’s amazing the kind of thinking that you get after a few generations of brainwashing via RTM/TV3/Utusan/NST/TheStar etc. When price go up, complain. When some people want to fight to lower price, they use talking points from the people who brainwashed them. They can drive all the protons and kancils that they want. If 30% still want high car prices, let them have it, let them pay the high price, and we have 30% less of that RM8b to worry about. Like the 3 pricing scheme that we have now (peninsular, sabah sarawak, langkawi/labuan), after car reduced we will be down to 2 pricings (BN price, PR price). They want to pay higher, let them. We want lower and real market, not artificially-jacked-up car prices.

    2) You are paying back the loan in first year, let says another 4 years to go. What are you going to do in these 4 years? Pay big chunk for car but others just pay half of yours. They now can buy more things, invest, enjoy. So you have to work HARDER & HARDER. Did you do anything wrong? Ya, maybe you made a wrong decision, that’s all.

FYI, the ‘Turunkan Harga Kereta’ was proposed by Rafizi Ramli, not by Big Guns like DSAI, LGE or NANM. The trick now is, they propose to do this campaign 1st (in order get popularity votes). Then, when they won the GE, the new PM say ‘I din’t say that I going to do ‘Turunkan Harga Kereta’. Its was Rafizi who say that. I just promise you as PM from what I said “from my mouth only”.

Then, if people still insists PM to keep their promise, the will doing it SLOWLY, not so significant and so fast. For exp, they wont reduce it like Thailand or Singapore..maybe few % only and the execution will take years if they have enough financial to do that. They also will say that we cannot do that because the last gov. has bad financial management, so no budget to do that. Lastly, he will say ‘When time is ready, we “will” do. But I can’t promise you now’.

So, just understand the tricks. No black & white agreement by him do execute their promise.

Talk about fuel subsidies and other kind of subsidies, that are the biggest joke and lies by gomen! Let put it in welfare state perspective. For “end consumers” like us, it is not “subsidy”, but should categorize as “welfare allocations”!

Subsidies is npormally part of “incentive” and “protect-ism policy” design to apply to “industrial market” like those manufacturer, farmer or any producers that produce local product for local and export.

Subsidi baja for paddy farmer, or 18 Billion gas subsidy to IPP (i.e. YTL) is SUBSIDY, but RM 1.00 for medical treatment + medicine at gov clinic (Kelinik Kesihatan) or RM 20 billion allocation fuel for RON 95 and diesel is “WELFARE ALLOCATION”.

  • The reason if there is anyone argue with trade in value drop, its just about them being so shallow. If the price for cars has been reduced, why they need to trade in their car at lower value? They can keep extra cars. Or in case they really need to ditch the old car, the reduction in new cars price certainly offset the lost of addition depreciation on their old car.

Only 2 parties affected in this if the legislation apply tomorrow. Used cars dealers and new car dealers. Used car dealers who accepted higher trade in value, but for a normal circumstances, used car dealers are working around RM10K margin minimum, from trade in to selling price.

New car dealers who order bulk from the distributor. The can easily recoup their lost, after selling more cars. Since they also working on a slightly bigger margin.

What about importers? Hmm… Do you think they really pay up the tax before their cars can display at the showroom or park at their stock yard? They pay the tax when the grace period due, or when buyers’ pay them to clear the tax. And best still with lower tax value, they can even bring more cars for showroom due to the lower inventory cost.

I only see more benefits than drawbacks , the authority can let loose of subsidy on fuel price. or add another one off vehicle ownership title per car. That should also recoup the tax income contribute from auto sector.

As I shared before, with the floating fuel price, we are paying high fuel price with tax only when we use them, if we can’t afford, we don’t drive (that should also ease authority worry on more cars on the road). Currently, the moment you buy a car, you are paying tax value of at least 40 years fuel subsidy (per person usage) at one go. And the same apply for any subsequent purchase later.

You can ask Singaporean…they will say that to ‘own’ a car at Singapore is more expensive that Malaysia due to COE issue.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Certificate_of_Entitlement

From the link above, singaporean people need to pay almost S$50k (for 1600 cc & below) in order to get the COE. Not yet include the price of the car itself. In Malaysia is different, you pay the car and buy no plate, no COE required. No hidden cost. The COE itself is how the Singapore gov. get their money back from this ‘tax’.

Even singaporean buy cars from Malaysia and bring it back to Singapore as their own personal car. It is the relaity that most Malaysian do not know.

Every gov. have their own way to control their money. They can lower their car price but higher their tax or the other way round. Same goes if you become big boss to a company. You can give high salary, every employee get company car, good medical benefit…end of the day, salary low etc. You can give high salary but low benefit as mentioned above.

In politics, do not 100% trust what they said. Does not matter BN or PR. Just see the result, not promises.

** Do you all know that most Singaporean people enjoy more benefit from M’sia like cheap fuel, food, hotel, golf, travel…everything is cheap in M’sia. Only M’sian people will say everything expensive in M’sia. I bet u all if you stay in Singapore for 1 week, for sure u will coming back in M’sia coz cannot tahan evrything so expensive except CAR.

Car prices is always a hotly discussed topic in Malaysia, well here’s my 2cents about it.

Firstly,I think it is possible to reduce car taxes. How to compensate the 8Billion lost? well abolish petrol subsidies and float the price. It means a lot of people can afford owning cars, but they must also be willing to pay petrol at market prices. This can encourage car pooling and use of public transport (if the ever manage to improve it), which can help reduced traffic congestion. Infact money saved from abolishing petrol subsidies can also be used to buy back all the highways one by one and only charge RM1 per entry (for maintenance because with the increase number of cars in Malaysia every year, for sure each year Toll will collect more than previous year). Advantage of this, no more petrol smuggling to neighboring countries and neighboring countries driver won’t fill their tank in Malaysia and enjoy subsidies meant for Rakyat, and it also encourage more travellers driving in from Singapore & Thailand.

Secondly, why is it when it comes to cars high taxes and NAP, its always Proton that get blame? they’re not the only company benefiting from this policy. Perodua, Inokom, NAZA also enjoying this protection and benefiting from it. They way i look at it, if car taxes go down, for sure it will affect P1, P2, Inokom and NAZA sales. So how many malaysian are there working in those factories and assembly plant combine, 50k maybe(and we still haven’t considered how many more workers could be involved working for vendors. so what about these 50k workers and vendors workers? what will happen to them? and also what about the vendors (even P2, NAZA & Inokom has local vendor). Try asking around if you know anyone (friend or relative or friend of a friend or friend of a relative) that works related (directly or indirectly/vendors) to the 4 local car company mention above, whether it is good for the company that they worked for or owned to be in a situation where local brand cars don’t sell very good. I just feel that if local car companies crash, that there will be a big consequences that we haven’t really thought off.

That’s I agreed with one of the comments above where it says that if you feel a particular car that you desired is expensive, maybe it means its out of your league or simply put it, You Cant Afford It and have to work harder if want to owned it. I mean Ferrari, Aston Martin & etc cost more that 1mil right, so do you think their owners will complain to other that their car is expensive. Instead they are proud that their car is expensive. It the average joe like me and you that like to complained that car are expensive in Malaysia, when it actually means we cant afford it. But then again, rather than admit that we can’t afford it, we take the easy way out and put the blame on others like P1 (but not P2, NAZA & Inokom when actually they are making more profit then P1 because the rebadge their car, selling other people with their name on it, so not a lot of investment is needed in R&D like what P1 went through in order to develop their own product)and the Gov.

There are far more important issues that high price of cars, for example price of houses. if there is 100 new houses on offer, only 50% of the buyers really want to live in them, while the rest bought it for invesment and rent it out. that’s why we hear people have more than 3-4 houses. This make demand for houses very high and drives the prices out of reach of average Malaysians. I dont mind the current car prices, but i want more reasonable prices for house. I dont mind taking bus or train, in fact I’m commuting by motorcycle to work every day. What I want is a reasonable price house with ample space so that I can provide a comfortable roof for my family. not min RM500k for a 18×65 double storey link house. The way I see it, we malaysian need to learn to live moderately.

I am envisioning some system will be in place to ensure those who are rich (i.e. can afford more than one car) will have to pay higher tax/duty on their next vehicle. Not fool proof, but good enough to cover most of the scenarios. And there must higher duty too for higher capacity/luxury cars.

Government might just lost 1 b plus or less from local car sales tax. So how to recover these taxes? show more transparency in governance and governemnt will have infiniti more fund, 1b 2b 8b? to invest and benefit rakyat.

theoretically when there is more disposable income, it would helps to expand the economy, and the excess would disburse among a enlarge segment of pupulation and not in the grip of a few cronies, and govt can impose more tax on the rich and affluent business, for instance, those bank and car distributer that made billions each year from our sweet and blood servicing the exorbitant car price and loan rate.

halo, no wonder kena tipu 50 over years masih tak sedar, ini orang semua tak baca ke? of course the pocess is a gradual one.

I just came back from overseas … Besides lowering car prices by at least HALF! Malaysians also need to improve their driving ethics by not double park and also improve on their parallel / side parking! It really annoys to see Malaysian driving BIG cars like Alphard/ Vellfire / S Class/ 7 Series but head in parking with the other half outside the white box!! Come on! This is really third world mentality!!!! Driving first world cars, but parking with a third world attitude! PLEASE! If really cant park the car well, get a driver/ chauffeur!!!!!!!

So that RM8 Billion tax should be:

    a) To feed the already-rich Kronies easy money or,
    b) To be returned to rakyat car buyers hard-earned money

Your choice shows either you with Kronies or with Rakyat…he he he

Is this going to help Malaysia or only some MalaysianNs?

There is car less than RM40k, MalaysiaNs can afford, but greedy wants bigger more expensive car. There is inspira, but MalaysiaNs want Toyota.
Malaysia is losing RM8,000,000,000 incomes to satisfy politiciaNs and some MalaysiaNs.

If PKR wins, they can use the 8 Bils to do many useful things, which is tax from the rich. Now PKR gotta find another way to get the 8 Bils. So where to get? Rakyat again?

Malaysia is crying but MalaysiaNs just don’t care. The siaNs are so easy to get manipulated by stupidoo politicians.

30 years of ripping Malaysians off is enough !

-Expensive cars rakyat can’t afford…expensive houses….cost of living escalating.

    – Ministers rob us by billions, get away with it & ride in luxury cars.

    – Proton priced higher in Malaysia than overseas.

    – Billions of ringgit lost to Thailand & Indonesia in the auto industry.

    – Crap cars from Proton for 30 yrs….especially since they were made of local parts mostly.

    – Gov always say will revise NAP but never do.

Proton buck up or get out !

  • I think the gov and JPJ should come out with quota system to control the population of cars on the road. Let say 2000 quotas will be provided for each type of vehicle. eg. car, motorcycle, lorry, etc.. In order to eligible the quota, the gov must impose some rules to car buyer.

    1. Only car buyers whom make a downpayment 30% or higher are eligible to receive the quota.

    2. Paid by cash is recommended..

    3. The car owners are limited to owned two cars under his/her name. Otherwise, higher surcharge will be borne by his self.

And shame on those who vote them because of such ridiculous campaign..this is just a political gimmick, there are alot of bussiness on 2nd hand cars, they will collapse, and if so, our country economy also get affect. And each of us also have to sell our used car at very2 the less price. Cars are necessity but LuXuriouS cars are lust. As an adult, please think ‘maturely’ and dont simply get trap into this kind of political gimmick. Ive already heard ppl saying not to buy 2nd hand car now because of this campaign. pkr should anaylse the effect of doing such campaign. there are many implications just by spreading rumour..and it is not healthy for Malaysia’s economy. I know ppl getting excited because of this campaign coz they think can get BMW or Merc at cheap price but im telling you…it wont happen (the price drop). that is truly correct. PR wants to gain vote by giving back to rakyat.

does BN do that? no, rakyat didahulukan means rakyat kena dahulu. high car prices to protect so called national car (actually cronies), high house prices (developer has to pay unofficial fees to govt officers to get proposal approved)

what rakyat gets? tolled highways which still jammed, low fuel quality, no rise in wages & salary, car prices kept increasing (camry 2.2 in 1996 was 120K, latest 2.5 model in 2012 is 180K), rm500 BR1M (cheapskate)

      dont write rubbish.

cars with 300k value depreciates like nobody business.

look at Jaguar S type, Merc E270, BMW 528i, Volvo XC90.

a new mercedez S class that sells at 1 million ringgit can lose something like 400K after a year. dont believe? go read car classifieds in the star paper, or mudah.my

honda civic 2.0S (model FD1) that was sold at 130K 3 years ago lost 30K this year, and we are not talking about trade-in value yet which is even lower.

your worries are actually pretty baseless.

    1. increase in number of cars on the road when the price drop is irrelevant. A person who wants/needs to buy a car will buy a car. you can get one for as low as RM1K for a crappy car. What will increase is the number of better quality cars. Total numbers should be more or less the same.
    2. People will change their car more frequently instead of driving the same old banger for 9 years.Total numbers should be more or less the same.
    3. One person can buy 2 or more cars but only one will be driven on the road at any given time. Want to reduce the number of cars? Reduce the number of driving licence.
    4. Patronizing the rakyat to work harder or ubah cara hidup and be thankful with the status quo when they aspire to have better living standards; this is the kind of elitist mindset that plague the current gov which everybody hates.

Hey Paul why don’t you make a pro and cons table on this issue based on reader’s feedback. I saw some great points/insights from them tho from different camp.

This might sounds stupid but here goes. Why don’t they make 2 types of car prices since there are different views on this.

1st type is cars with lower taxes and excise duties for people who wants less burden in their life.

2nd type is the same cars but with the current tax and duties added OR even higher tax rate if they wish. So, people who are willing to so called contribute to the Government for whatever development or traffic congestion issues they have or if they want to fund for better public transportations can pay the higher price for the same cars.

I would see this as a win-win situation. This way, you can pay more if you’re happy to do so and everyone is happy.

sekarang, sekali lagi kepentingan rakyat diberi perhatian iaitu harga kereta yg mengarut.

You can forget about tax refunds cos there won’t be any money.. when i bought my Wald Edix, the value declared on the customs form was RM15k… my Sorento which i bought from Naza earlier this year is also the same.. imagine not only these people get dished APs from govt for free.. but they get away with underpaying tax. So if PR really takes over, I think a lot of people will go to jail.. maybe the whole board of NAZA and half of Malaysian Customs and MITI.. it’s big money guys and that’s why Najib is making small reforms everywhere but standing still on this one.. I admire PR to attack this issue because all of us grew up knowing this is a systematic corruption that burdens all of us. Systematic way to extract profits in such a manner is no different than organised crime! In fact it is probably worse because they are ‘legally’ doing it! Setahu saya harga kereta kat US,Japan dan Jerman memang murah berbanding malaysia. Tapi macam mana dengan kos-kos sampingan, seperti roadtax, insurance, parking, petrol dan sebagainya. Adakah kos nya juga murah atau berlipat kali ganda. Lagi satu Kereta kat US mereka boleh guna kereta tu selama-lamanya ka seperti negara kita. Bukan kah mereka ada policy disposal kereta yang berusia bawah sepuluh tahun tak dibenarkan lagi digunakan…kalau bolehpun insurance dia akan jadi mahal sangat. So sebab tu harga kereta baru mereka murah dari kereta malaysia. Negara kita…selagi kereta tu boleh jalan maka terus digunakan..sedangkan chasis dah teruk dan reput serta tak selamat dijalan raya. Saya pun rasa harga kereta kat malaysia ni melampau harganya. Memang cukai tu peru untuk pembangunan negara….tapi agak-agak la…., Bagi saya kereta import kat malaysia ni kena turun harga. kalau boleh cukai just separuh dari harga kereta. Kereta harga declare kastam RM 60K , cukai just mak. 30K ok lah….ni tidak kereta import harga 60K..cukai 120K,,,,total RM 180K…jenuh nak bayar yop….sapa-sapa yang pernah menetap diluar negara boleh komen sikit pengalaman tetang perbandingan harga kereta ni. In US, if your bayi is new born, you’ll own the car when he/she is 1 year old. In M’sia, you’ll own the car when he/she is 9 years old. Nothing to compare, their car in US is also full spec with 7/11 airbags/VSA etc for Hyundai, in M’sia, only 2 airbags for Elantra. What is there to compare? 27 Million rakyat akan untung vs 1 Million Cronies rugi if they kurangkan harga kereta. So What?

Anybody got the figure, how this RM$ 8 billion loss come about? Does it account only the tax duty policy or also account for the banking sectors’ revenues from car loans? Is it purely from tax excise duty abolishment or tax reduction? If abolishment does it mean no tax at all for imported cars? If reduction, is it from 150% or 300% down to 25% for both CKD and CBU or exactly what percentages for CKD and CBU? Some more breakdown detail figures would help.

    • This is how present govt keeps their grip on us since 1957… by putting us in fear and confusion. For so long, this is how the ruling cronies get their wealth. For a sum of a govt project, 1/3 will go to promoters/dept PIC, another 1/3 go to YB/Party and just another 1/3 to do the actual thing (that’s how we get our ‘runtuh sana runtuh sini’ things). Eg for 2012, the govt budget for devp expenses is RM51.2bil. So taking above general formula, only about RM17 bil will turn into things. Another RM34 bil just go into drain of cronies and ruling parties acc. That’s why we can see our ‘ex-classmates’ such as S. Korea and Taiwan have advanced 3 times faster than us, while Thailand and Indon have just overtook us. So all in all, what is RM8 bil to them?

Now he is proposing the u turn. While it sounds great to reduce our burden, I’ll wait m y pardon on him until he really materialise this promise/repent. idea adalah bagus, cara perlaksanaan hendaklah lebih komprehensif dan menyeluruh, bukan hanya segelintir rakyat yg belum membeli kereta sahaja. ini pun sama macam BN lah kalau pilih2 bulu.

IMHO, if base on rafizi’s article, abrupt changes to current pricing would be a bad idea.

For non-national makes, perhaps starting with abolishing the AP.

    2. The G (especially current G) really need to manage our beloved Bolehland with integrity, transparency, good governance and efficiency.

    3. G expenditures especially mega projects shall go through detailed cost estimates, being challenged, undergo cost risk assessment. Tendering shall undergo screening of bidders, open tendering exercises, thorough techno-comm evaluations. All these need to made know to public including contractor’s performance and progress. Perhaps, costs to improve our public transportation can be scrutinized and optimized via these steps.

Only with this, the loss of RM8b income per year from car taxes means nothing actually and no problem to maintain the fuel subsidy. Moreover, this temporary loss can be replaced via other means/sectors where rakyat’s quality of living are elevated and have more purchasing power.

    Just my seposen.

p/s: Perhaps, the move by PKR would at least trigger something on the Jeeb’s side of the field, even a small and gradual reduction would be much appreciated by us rakyat.

I totally agree with this suggestion, even if i don’t get a direct benefits from it but my children will do in long run, and i will stop envy others and stop cursing the government for giving me so much commitment to own my dream and high quality car. Even if the price is lowered the number of car on the road will still manageable, as we will spend more money on the accessories not get another unit. For those who can’t afford to get car now they will be able to afford one and less motorcycle accident or less mat rempit. we are all for this bravo…

if the duty redution for cars implemented instead of reducing the car price, the manufacture should take this extra allowance in produce a car which have the strongest body , fully of latest safety features, best rating ,best emission, best interior such leather, rims , navi, etc..the gomen should make sure setting highest standard on car imported or produced here…must have list of best standard and highest specification on cars in safety, body, emission, etc…if this done our vios should be the best spec, kits and safety in world ….and buying car in malaysia is worth if money

  • PKR should also take into consideration of increase traffic flow, To counteract the effect, PKR should naikkan harga P1 and P2, they have been subsidised long enough already. It’s time for other cars to turunkan harga.

Just a few cents on this matter.

    Loan Period
With a lower car price (without the triple duties), the loan period will fall from our 7-9 years, to perhaps 3-4 years. So, if you’re paying RM800 now for your Vios, you’d still be paying RM800 for it when you buy brand new. That Vios was worth RM56k 2nd hand would probably be worth RM20k after 9 years.

    Actual Car Prices
Just a rough idea, a CRZ costs RM115k. In the UK it costs approx 19k GBP. At current rates, its the same. Its still pricey. Its definitely not RM40k. Another note is, please don’t compare US car prices. They are the worse to compare to because a USD100k S-Class costs UK GBP100k. In the US its so much more cheaper for cars. Use UK for a benchmark (RHD model, common legislation, centralised tax collection.

    Regional Prices
You’d be suprised that a Honda Civic costs about RM140k in Indonesia, and about RM130k in Thailand. Yes, the Toyota’s are cheaper, but not to the point of it being ridicolously cheap.

    Petrol Prices
Most likely the RM8 billion will need to be covered from one source or another, and its going to be from the pumps. This will lead to full float, and your RON95 would probably be RM2.80 per litre. Depends really, cheaper car, more expensive to run, or more expensive car, cheaper to run. Depends on how much you run the car.

    Lost Revenue
The RM8bil figure will need to be covered from somewhere. Whilst I would love to believe that it will come from ‘rectification of mismanagement’ or ‘eradication of corruption’, the fact of the matter is, show me something physical. Sick and tired of this ‘mismanagement’ reasons. You base your projections on past budgeted items, not on what you think are ‘mismanagement’ costs (even though its clear to the eye to see).

    Conclusion
Look fellow petrolheads, I support car price reduction. Its silly amount we’re paying. But I also acknowledge that its pretty cheap to run a car in Malaysia. Cheap petrol, low insurance costs, long loan repayment periods. The reason I write the above is because I want to just put out some thinking points before we all dream of buying BMWs for RM150k (320d price in the UK, GBP27k o.no) . I’m guessing if we do remove the excise duties, these ancillary prices will come up. I love for the price to go down, but can we please know where the money is coming from to replace the lost revenue?

I’m no government stooge, but I’m no blind follower either. I’m a reasoned citizen able to make up my own minds. Its a good move this lowering of car prices, but can we know full details please before we can make our minds.

what about the salary that msians are earning here ? if they earn Rm5k per month in msia, while others earn 5k gbp per month in uk, most certainly the 5k gbp earner can afford the 19k gbp crz easier than those who earns Rm5k in msia

To be fair to Rafizi on his suggestion to reduce car prices, I would sincerely suggest Paul Tan or any car website to be transparent on the actual car prices, e.g: list the exact car price, the various breakdown of the taxes/duties imposed, the AP cost that is included and the cost of buying the insurance for that particular car. Not forgetting the interest that will be paid by buyer of those car. Than we will see the whole actual picture.Agreed?

  • how does cheaper car price relate to increase in traffic congestion????
people can easily buy a used car like iswara/kancil for less than 10k on mudah. No need to wait for MITI to erase NAP/abolish tax, excise and everything.

we dont need BMW 320D or CRZ for our daily drive, all we need is level playing field in automotive industry here in malaysia so it can benefit the end user/customer. monopoly is just bad for any economy.

and who asking about lost of revenue.how do you consider this as a lost revenue when it is not a justifiable revenue to begin with???its more like a ripoff/songlap rather than revenue

Also the used car dealers will most probably die because their car values will also fall even further.

Agree car prices should come down. A BMW 328i E36 cost around 180k in mid-90’s, now F30 cost 300k. I don’t think the government has introduced new taxes since then. But why almost doubled?
These sounds sweet, but where can government recuperate that RM 8bil . Hope Pakatan will not remove subsidies on food stuff and fuel. Because that will shoot everything up haywire. We may all have nice cars, but nowhere to go coz it’s too expensize. That is something PKR failed to explain.

well i just bought a wish at RM160k…what hurt me most is i am paying, if i am not wrong, almost 20k as AP to a retired umno Tan Sri veteran politician. I work hard not only to get decent car for my 4 kids but also to support luxury living of umno retired politician!?. AP is used by them as their political ‘benefit’ to their politician and cronies!! at the expense of us ordinary rakyat..

And even though i will suffer on resale value if the car price is dropped, i will still support it for my kids and future generations..that is my sacrifices to them for not living as modern slaves anymore…working hard while enriching others!

You may choose to forever sacrifice your hard earn money to enrich others ridiculously or sacrifice now and stop all these modern slavery..the words used by our own PM with regards to taxi permits practices in the country…taxi drivers are treated as slavery for years and if they still voted BN because of the new tyres they received, no wonder Malaysia is behind other neigbouring countries nowadays..

Cars are not our only priority in life of course, but the burden of owning a car in malaysia is so ridiculous..reducing car prices would have increase car numbers, traffic jams, affected second value but those are the risk that we need to take and brace through in order for change to happen…

Remember, we can say the PR is talking nonsense as what BN want us to think and say, but all the ‘transformation’ being done now by the G is undeniably due to pressure and counter policies initiated by PR..we won’t receive TNB bill subsidies if not PR Selangor started with water bill subsidy….taxi drivers will continue to be modern slaves if not PR promises to change their conditions if it wins…and we wouldn’t know that the menteri besar wrongly get his million ringgit bungalow if not he be thrown out from his chair!

Just give the other side a chance to change…developed nations keep on changing G but they are even prosper now and then..

Don’t be too afraid to change and assume to much on negativity effect of changes…the rakyat had long being implanted with fear of change that they develop so much fear assumption beyond reasonable doubt!

Go for cheaper cars, and you can have a different life ahead! trust me in this..

  • Actually, this issue no so important few years back during 90’s and early 00’s. However, people rite now do not want to use P1 and P2 anymore and prefer to use BMW,Merz,Audi, etc. Earlier people thanks to G for producing reliable national car which affordable compare to other brand.

Generally, people now are much richer compare old days. Before not many people able to buy even Honda, Toyota. So many people using P1 and P2 on the road. Conclusion; people nowdays very wealthy with the current G for 55 years compare on 1957.

So…now people say P1 and P2 not good. The reason many people want this ‘Turunkan Harga Kereta’ is there are able to use those branded car other than P1 & P2. Frankly they wanna say that P1 n P2 should tutup kedai because of crony issue.

I can guarantee u, even G will be changed in next PRU13, crony problem will be the same, only diff people. Same goes as bribery etc. Those r politic agenda by that parties so that u vote for them. Then, they will do same practice but diff style/people.

Lastly, nowdays people not so much patriotism like old years. That’s the reason people like P1 and P2 goes down n support other brand. To be positive, P1 and P2 nowdays much more better compare like old saga, wira. But still want to compare other brand that already establish.

To check either u r patriotism for M’sia..who raise M’sia flag on their car during Merdeka Day? Can count by fingers. People now think bout money, money, money and don’t care bout their own country. Like P1 and P2 shut down and BMW same price like Inspira.

If u have your own child who not so excel and well-educated compare to other people who has bright and intelligent child, u will still love him/her no matter what and do the best for him/her to be a better person. Same concept if u love ur P1,P2 and ur country.

Ayam, there you goes again..playing assumption kinda thing..nobody says PR is an angle..they’ll have their cronies and may eventually be corrupted too BUT they will have to start it from somewhere..and compare to all the 55 years or so corrupt network, cronies build up etc..even the whole country system may have been set up to benefit them for the past 50years! think of that..and even if the PR ever be corrupted, the people have already learn through the changes and would not hesitate to change the G again..it is all in your hands, the people. By doing this the we will have a system that will self correct itself…ne more talking and talking and slogans and slogans…

The way you think vindicate how corrupt our mind be after being ruled and ‘programmed’ by the current G for tens of years! How can a smart citizen think like that bro?

I will lose if the plan materialised, but i will not loose much. imagine this, you will have to sell off your car at very much reduced resale value, but you will get the chance to buy a very much reduced car price too..so you end up not loosing too much. Then when you opt to buy the next car you’ll get back the loses from you first selling by getting a cheaper car, and then your kids will get the chance to enjoy cheaper car and overall malaysian will be much richer than 55 years of BN rule!

  • Now if giving an option:

    1. The diff price from national car amd oversea brand car is coz of the protection of the national car itself. So, ttup kedai for P1 and P2 straight away (People said coz of crony issue and low quality). Then the car price will drop significantly like he price at Labuan. Singapore and Thailand for exp can have cheap oversea brand car coz they do not have their own national car.

    2. Still proceed with the campaign..and P1 and P2 for sure no one buying coz have same price with other oversea brand car. 60k for honda city or persona, which 1 u want? ENd of the day also, P1 and P2 will ttup kedai also in few years time..

Sometimes, we have to think if u r the PM of M’sia..r u responsible enough to lower the oversea brand car and on the same time u beleive P1 and P2 will survive another day? U have ur votes during next PRU. I’m not very 95% sure that the PKR as the new G will staright away do this campaign overnight, coz most Malaysian knows they not so committed to make their promises. I was voting for PR last PRU, and I felt cheated with wat they have done to my own state, Selangor.

U see, easy to talk but not talking responsibility. Not yet count if they really execute their promises. It just about getting popular votes. That’s all.
