The Foton Tunland is now in Tunland Malaysia! Or at least, someone is exploring the possibility of bringing it in, since a lightly disguised one with trade plates has been spotted in Penang by eagle eyed reader Tommy. The Tunland is not the only Foton with an amusing name, as we were first acquainted with the brand thanks to an SUV product called the Foton Saga.
Like most pick-up trucks, the Foton Tunland is powered by an oil burner, which in this case is a 2.8 litre Cummins ISF2.8s4161P diesel engine, rated for 161 hp at 3,600 rpm and 360 Nm from 1,800 to 3,000 rpm. The Cummins engine is mated to a Cadillac-derived manual transmission. Not segment leading numbers, but competitive none the less, although the large 2.8 litre engine displacement will incur a higher road tax cost than say, a 2.2 litre Ford Ranger.
We wonder if it is Berjaya or Warisan TC Holdings who are the ones who are testing this truck, or someone else altogether.
Warisan TC are in business with Foton, with their subsidiary Angka-Tan Motor selling Foton bus chassis and related products, and another subsidiary Kereta Komersil Seladang Sdn Bhd selling Foton light commercial products. Warisan TC uses the Bison brand for Foton products in Malaysia.
Berjaya also sells Foton products in Malaysia. Its sole offering right now is the Foton View commercial van.
