Toyota Fortuner updated in Thailand – increased output for 3.0L, 5-speed auto transmission finally on

Toyota Motor Thailand has given the Fortuner a technical update for 2012, with a slight increase to the output of the 1KD-FTV 3.0 litre turbodiesel and the inclusion of a five-speed automatic gearbox the key changes.

Equipping four variants in the Kingdom. the 3.0 litre oil burner’s power and torque figures have been revised to 171 PS at 3,600 rpm and 360 Nm at 1,400 to 3,200 rpm from the previous 163 PS and 343 Nm. Malaysia of course doesn’t have the 3.0 litre diesel Fortuner, the 2.7 litre petrol and 2.5 litre diesel equipped models being the versions sold here.

Of more interest is the inclusion of a five-speed auto ‘box into the equation – besides all four 3.0 litre models, the Fortuner 2.5G AT 2WD also gets the new five-speeder AT in Thailand, leaving the sole 2.7 petrol unit the only version retaining the use of the four-speed. The Prerunner versions of the Hilux Vigo also feature the five-speed auto drivetrain.

Locally, both the Fortuner and Hilux pick-up facelifts arrived last year, but are set to feature improvements in the upcoming 2012 MY introduction. The Fortuner 2.5G – as well as the Hilux Double Cab 2.5G – for Malaysia will feature VNT and improved numbers from its 2KD-FTV D-4D mill, these being 144 PS at 3,400 rpm and 343 Nm at 1,600 to 2,800 rpm, but will retain the four-speed auto transmission.

We do have a 3.0 litre diesel Hilux here, will that be updated to 5-speed auto soon, or will it be phased out because of the Hilux 2.5 VNT?

I prefer ESP over 5-speed auto, IF Toyota is kind enough to give only ONE of them.

Seriously, when are they going to launch a completely new Hilux? Is this car trying to beat the original Beetle’s lifespan, with minimal changes?!?!?

What’s the point of increasing output if the speed is capped at 160km/h?
