Porsche 911 range welcomes AWD Carrera 4 and 4S

The Porsche 991 family is set to welcome two new all-wheel drive members – the 911 Carrera 4 and 4S, available in Coupe and Cabriolet forms. The all-paw duo will debut at next month’s Paris show.

All models have a seven-speed manual gearbox as standard, with the seven-speed PDK twin-clutch transmission as an option. The rear-end of the Carrera 4 houses a 350 hp 3.4 litre flat-six that’s good enough for 0-100 km/h in just 4.5 seconds (Cabriolet 4.7 sec) and a top speed of up to 285 km/h (Cabriolet 282 km/h).

The 4S gets a 3.8 litre lump with 400 hp, delivering 0-100 km/h in 4.1 seconds (Cabriolet 4.3 sec) and a top speed of 300 km/h. With that kind of firepower, who needs the Turbo?

The powertrains aren’t new, but they’re linked to the latest version of the active all-wheel drive Porsche Traction Management (PTM) system. Porsche says that while retaining the traditional RWD emphasis of the 911, the AWD chassis of the Carrera 4 and 4S delivers “increased traction, road-holding and dynamic performance over a wide variety of road surfaces and in all weather conditions.”

As usual, an identifying feature of the Carrera 4 and 4S are the wider rear wheel arches – compared to RWD Carreras, the “hips” extend outwards by 22 mm, and house rear tyres that are 10 mm wider. The signature red light band that connects the two taillights has also taken on a new form.

Inside, a new menu in the instrument cluster informs the driver how PTM distributes engine torque between the axles, in real time.

In conjunction with the duo’s unveiling, Porsche is introducing the option of Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) – which controls distance to traffic ahead and vehicle speed – across the 911 model range. When ordered with PDK, the ACC system adds the safety function Porsche Active Safe (PAS), which can help prevent front-end collisions. A sliding glass sunroof is also now available as an option for all 911 Coupé models.

  • Thank God, PDK is still an option.

Unless you’re going for the Turbo, you’d go with the RWD Carrera or Carrera S , with a manual stick.. if you call your self a man

7-speed manual transmission. But need to special order for it as Sime Darby Auto Performance mainly focuses on 7-speed PDK gearbox.

I disagree, the PDK is excellent fun especially in Sport Plus mode and coupled with the Sports exhaust. Besides the Carrera and Carrera S are still Porsche’s luxury-sports variant, for full hairy unadulterated classic 911 feel, you’d have to wait for the (expected) GT3 RS and GT2 variants.

    • I didn’t know that all F1 drivers are ladies…

They are pimple popping girls. See how big balls were required to drive F1 cars during Fangio, Clark, Stewart and even Senna days. There were onboard camera footages as early as Stewart days in the late 60s

        • I agree. I once saw a movie about the ‘Silver Arrows’ of the 1930s. A Mercedes-Benz W125 had 646hp then. The whole car weighted 1100kg, it had drum brakes, the tire size of a Kapchai and the drivers used to wear leather caps instead of crash helmets. And just beside the race track there were trees, buildings, etc.
But in this times it was quite “normal” that one or two drivers died each race…

I agree, the only Porsche i own is the legendary widowmaker model, the 930 chassis code 1989 911 Turbo S.It’s very, very rare and it’s my favourite model.I purchased mine from a collector from England after spending 24 years in the States. And mine is a 5 speed stick.

Came with 3.3 litre single KKK turbo and made 340ps.Stock form it has a serious amount of turbo lag, when boost comes on you better hang on and make sure the road is straight.Get it wrong on one of these and it will write your obituary.Very unforgiving and twitchy on the limit.

The current ones are really nice to drive but this one which lovingly own somehow gives you a true sense of what a Porsche really is.Mine has sorted with 18″ period correct design Fuchs alloys, suspension lowered and sorted correctly and it’s lovely flat six now runs a 3.6 twin turbo with just under 500ps at the rear threads.Quite the beast.

      Just my 2 cents.Cheers.

  • If I were to buy, I would get the PDK version for sure.

No, I am driving a manual 6 speeds RCZ. Why? The AT RCZ is not PDK, can’t compare.

Porsche…my next sports car! Have to work harder and dream for it!

    • Questions like these are the reason Porsche opted to put the “911” alongside the “Carrera” at the rear haha, to make sure no one gets confused anymore.
