Ah, a birthday celebration, and nothing like a limited-edition sport-racing edition to mark the occasion. The 45th birthday of Mercedes-AMG has brought about a special SLS AMG edition called the GT3 45th Anniversary.
Aimed at car collectors with a particular penchant for motor racing, the vehicle is being built by hand in Affalterbach, in a limited edition run of just five units. The installation of the AMG 6.3 litre V8 in this one is a bit special too – record DTM champion and AMG brand ambassador Bernd Schneider is involved hands-on in the production process, installing the unit as a VIP engine fitter, working alongside an AMG chap.
The car gets a new designo magno graphite matte paint finish, which thus far has been exclusive to the SL 65 AMG 45th Anniversary that was unveiled in New York back in April. The AMG light-alloy wheels are also done in designo magno graphite.
It wears a “45 Years of Driving Performance” logo framed in silver on its gullwing doors, and closer inspection will reveal the exposed carbon-fibre structure of the gullwing doors under the matte paintwork. Plenty of CFRP to be found too – the doors, bonnet, mudguards, boot lid, rear wings, front and rear apron, front splitter and rear diffusor are all done in the stuff.
Inside, there’s a steel rollover cage finished in matte designo magno graphite to match the exterior, and the dashboard and centre console sport a matt carbon-fibre finish. Effective contrasts are produced by six-point seat belts and a steering wheel with silver detail, and co-driver’s seat shell is finished in a high-strength carbon-fibre safety cell.
Elsewhere, a special badge with a “1 of 5” logo on the seats and the centre console reminds the owner of the rarity of the beast, while under the bonnet a special AMG engine badge bearing the signatures of Bernd Schneider and the engine fitter can be found. Rounding things off for the collectible is an AMG indoor car cover bearing a “45 Years of Driving Performance” logo.
