MINI Paceman John Cooper Works – first photos

Hot on the heels of the MINI Paceman is the John Cooper Works version, the top of the Paceman range and the seventh in the JCW line-up. Next month’s NAIAS in Detroit is set to host its debut, with market launches expected in March.

A turbocharged 1.6 litre sends 218 hp and 280 Nm of torque (300 Nm on overboost for short periods between 2,100 and 4,500 rpm) to all four wheels (ALL4 is standard) through a six-speed manual or automatic gearbox. 100 km/h is reached from rest in just under seven seconds, and top speed is 226 km/h for the manual and 224 km/h for the auto.

Technologies such as twin-scroll turbocharging, direct injection and Valvetronic enhance the mill, which also features reinforced pistons, lightweight crankshafts, an aluminium cylinder block and bearing mounts, and an optimised cooling system, air supply and exhaust gas discharge system. Despite the added go, MINI claims a respectable fuel economy of 7.4 litres (manual) and 7.9 litres (auto) per 100 km on the EU cycle.

What about the show? The Paceman JCW gets a bodykit, a suspension that’s been lowered by 10 mm, lightweight 18-inch alloys (19s are optional) and a sports exhaust with twin chrome tailpipes. Apart from white and black, the roof, mirror caps and interior trim strips can be had in an exclusive Chili Red paint finish as an optional extra.

Inside, there’s red-contrast stitching on the sports steering wheel, cloth sports seats (leather optional) gear lever gaiter and floor mats, while the dials and headlining are dark-coloured. Nine body colours are available, including the JCW-only Chili Red.

Want two more doors? Check out the similarly-equipped MINI Countryman JCW, which surfaced only three months back. Last month, the MINI JCW GP, a 2,000-unit limited edition and the fastest production MINI yet, made its debut at the Paris motor show.

While most dream of the future, Jonathan Tan dreams of the past, although he's never been there. Fantasises much too often about cruising down Treacher Road (Jalan Sultan Ismail) in a Triumph Stag that actually works, and hopes this stint here will snap him back to present reality.

VW Golf GTI is a driver’s car. This is a Teenager toy to showoff how rich they are.

No need to smoke others. Buying sports car is just as a toy for many of us. When you have reached that status, you don’t want to smoke others already, trust me.
True, Mini is a toy for teenager or ‘young at heart’.
A-class really looks pretty, despite being less sporty.

  • I like the Paceman .
But waking up in the morning and looking out of the window to see you have bought a Paceman over the Stunning 2-door Range Rover Evoque is a regret I cannot live with.
