Designed to sit at the top of the line-up in markets such as the US, Brazil, China and Singapore, the petrol-powered Audi SQ5 is set to join the facelifted R8 and RS5 Cabriolet on the Audi stand at next week’s Detroit motor show.
The engine is a 3.0 TFSI V6 that makes 354 hp between 6,000 and 6,500 rpm and 470 Nm of torque between 4,000 and 4,500 rpm. The compressor sits in the 90-degree V of the cylinder banks, downstream of the throttle valve.
Its twin rotors, positioned a few thousandths of a millimetre from each other, spin at over 20,000 rpm, resulting in as much as 0.8 bar of boost. Various other technologies employed facilitate heightened smoothness and charging efficiency, torque that develops quicker and earlier as well as a quieter operation.
An eight-speed Tiptronic ‘box with two modes and shift paddles works together with all this to yield a century sprint time of 5.3 seconds, which Ingolstadt claims is the best in its class. Top speed is an electronically limited 250 km/h, while average fuel economy and CO2 emissions (NEDC) are a quoted 8.5 litres per 100 km and 199 grams per km respectively.
The chassis, featuring permanent quattro all-wheel drive with torque vectoring, lowers the body 30 mm over 20-inch wheels (21s are available) wrapped in 255/45 series rubber, while springs and dampers have been “more tautly tuned for a sporty and balanced setup.”
Electromechanical steering is standard, but buyers can opt for the steplessly variable ratio steering, controllable via Audi drive select.
The mostly black interior (pics have yet to be released) has some nice contrasting touches – there are white-on-grey dials and aluminium look-finished pedals and shift paddles. The sport seats can be had in a combination of Pearl Nappa leather and Alcantara as standard, or the buyer may choose from four optional leather colours.
Likewise, the standard inlays are brushed aluminium, with Carbon Atlas, Piano finish or layered aluminum and wood in Beaufort black available as options.
Xenon plus headlights with LED DRLs, a stainless-steel loading-sill protector and a driver information system with colour display are standard equipment, while MMI navigation plus and Audi connect are among the optional assistance and infotainment systems offered.
