Detroit 2013: Volkswagen Passat Performance Concept

vw-passat-detroit-2013

Volkwagen will be showcasing the above tuned up Passat at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show. It’s called the Volkswagen Passat Performance Concept, and it’s been tuned up to 250 horsepower, mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission.

The 250 horses have been derived from the EA888 1.8 litre engine. The fact that 250 horses can be so easily achieved and the fact that the next generation Golf platform-based range of cars seem to have 1.8 litre instead of 2.0 litre engines as range toppers open doors to the possibility that the next generation GTI models could have 1.8 litre engines instead of 2.0 litre ones.

Other than the engine, other differences with the Passat Performance Concept is a dual exhaust system, 19-inch “Luxor” alloy wheels, Bi-Xenon headlights including Advanced Front Lighting System (AFS) and LED taillights and carbon applications on its mirror caps. Inside, carbon-like touches dominate the dashboard, matching the carbon-style inserts on two-color leather seating surfaces and complementing the black headliner and side pillars. A lowered sport suspension and electro-mechanical steering enhance the handling.

You’ll notice that this Passat doesn’t look like the one sold in Malaysia and it isn’t just because of the upgraded stuff like the fancy wheels that they’ve strapped on. This is the US market Passat, which is larger than the European Passat that we get. You’ll notice it has a different rear end design with a number plate that’s mounted on the boot lid instead of the bumper.

    • Only VW USA is safe to buy because most of them r not using those TSI engine and 7 speed DSG…u can found 2.5 engine with normal 6 speed transmission in their Passat and Jetta…own a Polo TSI and that’s is terrible and mechatronic is a fail thing!

  • VW – making owning T&H hybrid cars a dumb decision from now onwards.

Once your vw starts visiting workshops, you’ll realise T&H owners are not the dumb ones after all.

Perhaps I’m getting nostalgic but didn’t car companies used to use concept cars to explore future directions? Now-a-days it seems that car companies only idea is squeezing more HP from an engine, not that that’s a bad thing but it just doesn’t capture the imagination like the futuristic-but-unmakable concepts of old.

If only this was the Passat we get here in Malaysia. Somewhat it looks nicer, and with the space, it would make a great alternative to the usual Camry.
