Acura MDX Concept – thinly-veiled production 3rd-gen

Acura MDX Concept-05

The Acura MDX is another model that’s due for replacement, having been around since 2006, so Honda’s luxury brand rolled out the Acura MDX Concept at NAIAS 2013. Forget the concept name, as this showcar is a thinly-veiled example of the production third-generation 2014 MDX, which will be launched in America the middle of this year.

The seven-seat Acura MDX Concept features “Aero Sculpture” styling. Highlights include signature Acura Jewel Eye LED headlights, an arcing roofline (1.5 inches lower) and 16% better aerodynamic efficiency, achieved through extensive testing in Honda R&D Americas’ new wind-tunnel lab in Ohio.

Acura says that the 2014 MDX prototype features a longer wheelbase that enhances ride quality, increases second-row legroom, and improves third-row seat access.

The 2014 MDX will also feature an all-new, more rigid and lightweight chassis, including new front and rear suspension designs that “deliver a more refined, confidence-inspiring, and sporty driving character.”

An all-new, direct-injected 3.5 litre i-VTEC SOHC V6 with Variable Cylinder Management will deliver improved torque and performance while realising a significant increase in fuel efficiency to class-leading levels, Acura says. And in response to demand from consumers in warm weather markets Acura also will, for the first time, offer a front-wheel drive version of MDX in addition to the SH-AWD model.

The Acura MDX will be built exclusively in North America.

Cantiq, neat. DRL/fog lamps, straight and neat, not overstyles.
Rear also ok, overall looks more upmarket compared to Ab-Beng styled new design language from L.
    Takeri-like.

Huh? Save for the obligatory-concept-car-show-hall jewelery, this ‘concept’ looks (almost) like the MDXs running around the streets albeit with different proportions (concept model looks longer and less stumpy).
