These are patent drawings filed by Nissan with the Chinese patent office, and they show a next-gen Nissan X-Trail that looks nothing like the current one. No more boxy, but rather curvy, the third-generation Nissan X-Trail has looks that are more in line with the brand’s other crossovers like the Juke, Qashqai and Murano.
These patent drawings also confirm that the production car will retain most, if not all of the lines of the Nissan Hi-Cross Concept, shown at Geneva 2012. The Hi-Cross was a seven-seat SUV concept, so could the next X-Trail have that third-row option?
The showcar had a 2,780 mm wheelbase, a number that is between the current X-Trail and Murano, while its 4,660 mm overall length is just 30 mm longer than today’s car.
Now that the exterior design of the Hi-Cross has been proven to be realistic, how about the cabin and powertrain? Click here to read more and view a full gallery of the Hi-Cross concept.

No joke design please.
Nissan and Mazda exterior r improving !
Much much better than previous design..appealin
agree, no more boxy design.
Good News! for those in Standard six now and want an affordable, reliable newly-launch-in-Malaysia SUV for your college years, This is it!
These patent drawings are in isometric view (vs perspective) so these may look a little off. It’s not really back heavy. This is really the Hi-cross’s exact production form.
ZZz..after tucson, now all the suv wants to look like this
Driving X-Trail feels like driving a car in the 50s or 60s..!!
It’s so plain and so boring!!!!
Hopefully the new generation won’t be so.. Even nothing much to be expected from Nissan…
Cars in the 50s and 60s are way more exciting than today. They may not be fast, but the lack of any highway and cars itself have laughably poor NVH and safety is determine by luck, driving were waaaay more exciting(dangerously exciting) than today’s automobile.
Are you dreaming?
with olden cars, it’s a big no-no without aircond and good handling. One cannot compromise the speed or you will arrive late everyday
Yes speed is no comparison between this two era, today’s hatchback can smoke any 50s supercars to kingdom come. But I’am trying to point out which is more exciting to drive. Old cars with their poor NVH, no body rigidity and popping engine is far more exciting than the transportation appliance we use today.
Put it this way, a modern day Airbus A320 is much faster than a WW2 B17 bomber. But which one is more exciting? The pressurized cabin of the Aurbus or the none-pressurize cabin of the B-17
are you on high ? 50s 60s car are exciting to drive ? you must be granny or great granny..
Just read my comments above.
No, I’am no granny, I’am a purist. And there is a very high chance I’am younger than you. If you are by any chance younger than me, first-term is only a month and a half away, better start studying.
you can buy 60s tech car today…its call the stone age dugong!
their designing team finally had some breakthru in 2013
they finally got over their ‘award winning designs’ from the 80’s!
Looks like an internship project to round of some shape edges and improvise some dynamic styling. Is there a theme for the design?
Hopes it retain speedo at driver side, not at center in 1st Gen…. Nissan should make X-Trail as driver centric car!
The current X-Trail already has a conventionally placed speedo.
But it looks like Santa Fe 2006 model
i like the look of the 1st gen xtrail…it ages well…still looks good even by today standard. 2nd gen styling is wat i would call lazy design by nissan..but this 3rd gen looks like the current pajero sport to me.
Talk about X-Trail with its ever classic design, the car got four stars when first introduced in U.K and the funny thing ‘What Car’ publications give it full five stars when it becomes secondhand used. Appear like paradox?
Best SUV 2012 ‘What Car’ U.k placed Nissan Qashqai ahead of Mazda CX-5 despite already few years in the market.Pity Tan Chong do not market this car here.
Nissan SUV four wheels drive plus adorable CVT transmission is the best for pleasure and off road motoring.Whereas here the herd mentality is Honda CRV,more towards School Utility Vehicle.
Let’s see how the production of new model X-Trail when it reach showroom. For me, certainly this is my choice.-X-Trail owner.
nice design..
about bloody time! please Nissan, shut up and take my money!
…and the third gen X-Trail will be launched in Malaysia in 2020.
This reminds me of the Pajero Sport
Looks great…a scaled down version of the MY2013 USDM Nissan Pathfinder crossover. Definitely looks nicer than the awkwardly detailed Nissan Murano.
nice but i hope tan chong doesnt screw it up like the current x-trail
