Infiniti Q50 to get turbo four-cylinder, diesel engines

Two V6 engines were announced at the unveiling of the Infiniti Q50 sedan at the Detroit show: a 3.7 and 3.5 litre, with the smaller engine powering the hybrid variant. We lamented at the time that the Stateside-centric powerplants were too large for certain markets, including our own. Well, it seems Infiniti has duly obliged.

President Johan de Nysschen has said that in two years’ time, the compact exec will get a turbocharged four-cylinder and a diesel engine, with the latter meant initially for European buyers only, reports Autoweek. The new engines will stem from the Daimler AG and Renault-Nissan partnership, and the report says Infiniti will receive an engine derived from that used in the Mercedes-Benz C-Class.

“You must have diesel available to be a serious member of the premium market,” said de Nysschen at the show. The brand is reportedly considering whether or not to offer the diesel in the US.

The former Audi North America president observed that the lack of the two said engines in Infiniti’s range has resulted in the brand missing out on two of the most important product segments in the world luxury market.

“We simply lack a vehicle in those segments,” he said. “We can’t compete with the world’s most powerful luxury auto companies on a part-time basis.”

Head of Infiniti for the Americas Ben Poore also revealed to Autoweek that there will be an all-wheel drive option for the Q50 Hybrid.

But there are good sounding 4s like honda k20 and alfa twin spark… But the ‘turbo’ engines such as Nissan SR20DET and Mitsu 4G63T do make quite a noise, but the newer ones have quieter, ‘muffled’ sounds….
