Something to cheer about, if you happen to have been eyeing the BMW ActiveHybrid 3 and ActiveHybrid 5. BMW Malaysia has announced that the pricing for both models has been significantly reduced, the reduction brought about the government’s move to extend the Energy Efficient Vehicles (EEV) incentives to cover both AH models.
The cars were officially launched in Malaysia in October last year, and were then priced at RM538,800 in the case of the ActiveHybrid 3 and RM648,800 for the ActiveHybrid 5.
With special exemptions now accorded to them as EEVs, the AH3’s price has been revised to RM398,800, while the AH5 now goes for RM498,800, both on-the-road without insurance, with BMW Service + Repair Inclusive. This lops RM140k and RM150k respectively from the asking price.
Both cars are powered by a N55B30 3.0 litre TwinPower Turbo six-cylinder engine, the same mill used in the 335i and 535i, with 306 hp and 400 Nm for output figures. Paired to it is a 40 kW (55 hp/210 Nm) motor to increase both performance and efficiency, and combined output is 340 hp and 540 Nm.
In a recent statement by the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI), Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed said that the EEV forms an important thrust of the to-be-announced revised NAP.
Currently, the 100% exemption for both import duty and excise duty for hybrid vehicles remain in place until Dec 31 this year, but it only covers hybrid cars with 2.0 litre engines and below, so the move beyond that cap in this case is definitely very interesting news.
Looking to sell your car? Sell it with Carro.
potong stim for those who bought this before the tax exemptions
there were zero sales before price drop. Most BMW on the road is Recon.
nope.. u r wrong. Malaysia sold more than 6000 BMW for year 2012. dont talk bout Hybrid. i think even with price slashed the sales will still remained low. in malaysian mentality, hybrid car oni for the poor or cost conscious. those rich wont even have time to bother bout the environment.
the guy up there was talking about hybrid..this article is about hybrid.. the price reduction is only for hybrid..so if u are not talkkng about hybrid, go somewhere else..
I mentioned before, BMW marketing team, you have not done your job well.
It’s so cheap, I will buy it straightaway for my children to go to university
BMW should just drop the prices of their original cars. The 3 series and 5 series are overpriced. Even with our high government taxes paid, the 5 series cannot come to a drastic RM360,000 that it is sold. Based on the US prices, we know that it comes out from the German factory for such a cheap amount. You add the RM130% tax and excide duty also, it can never come close to the figure it is sold in Malaysia. To make matters worse, ours is a CKD model, should’t the prices be even cheaper than the original CBU?
These are the US prices for familiar models. Mind you, these are prices after US duties are paid and after the US dealership makes a profit of each model sold. The real prices direct from the German factory are far lower!
BMW 328i
US$36,500 (RM109,500) RM300,000
BMW 528i
US$46,900 (RM149,000) RM400,000
BMW 535i
US$52,500 (RM157,000) RM600,000
BMW X5
US$47,500 (RM142,500) RM580,000
the fault not just to the tax scale. the importer itself make a crazy profit from each car. who to blame now after Govt open the door?
You said it right!
It’s never as eaasy as we think, our fuel price is still lower than most of the world, and lowering down will cost a riot towards the Japs and Korean makes, who demand their price to be lowered as well and if that happens Proton will be in trouble, which will affect the people responsible of lowering down the tax, causing them to be unable to afford the maintenance on their Porsche, so is not as easy as saying a magic word and PooF.
all that being said..the price of malaysian car is already fark up from the start
cheap fuel? i rather have the cheap car rather so we dont waste precious fuel! let petrol be rm5 a litre. proton is now a private concern none of our business!
The truth of the matter is that they could not sell at the original prices. So, this proves, if BMW Malaysia wanted to drop prices, they could. In this case, somehow they found a way to legally drop prices. HAs anyone ever seen an Active Hybrid on our roads even?
But the US price for the ActiveHybrid 3 is US$49,000. How was it originally sold for RM538,000 when our taxes are ONLY 110% to 130%?
So, now with the green tax exemption, how is it still sold for RM398,800?
The ActiveHybrid 5 on the other hand is Us$61,000. How was it originally sold for RM648,800?
Now with the tax exemption, how come it is still sold for RM498,800?
BMW Malaysia, how much are you really making profit of each model? Somemore direct from Germany, the prices are even cheaper than the US prices where the US dealership also makes a profit and US taxes are paid.
must go through MITI maaaaaa… even if the manufacturer wanted to price their models starting at RM1 for the top of the line, it must be approved by big bro.
kennot price too competitively, else other people get affected by the cheap price. used car dealer, AP holders, P1 and P2, chairman of CKD plant, all must be considered.
the rest of the people? the rest of the people can go to venezuela. there got free education.
“Somemore direct from Germany, the prices are even cheaper than the US prices”
I’m currently in Germany and a 320D is EURO 54.000 (RM225,067) here?
Unlike in the U.S. you have to pay everything extra. ;)
germany has a percentage of tax. which i am sure as I.Me said, we need not have to pay. Thus before the draconian malaysian duties and taxes take place, we should have a very low base price for bmw’s. still, they are not the only culprits. make that virtually every carmake. don’t blame the parent though, something is fishy in malaysia.
Cannot be lah Encik Mohd. Even in Australia the BMW 320d is about AUD$50,000. No sense to what you quoted if everywhere in the world BMW sells their car cheaper except their own country. If so expensive why got so many BMW and Mercedes teksi in Germany? Berlambak teksi I see. You think teksi man can afford so mahal kah?
In the UK, the 320d (320d EfficientDynamics Auto 4dr) is GBP £27481. So its £27481 x 4.9 = RM134,656. Things in the UK is ALWAYS far more pricier than the whole of Europe. So, how Germany selling at RM225,067?
On the road, driveaway price.
It’s often alot higher than what is advertised.
Im shopping for a car in Australia atm, and it’s so annoying seeing for example: A sedan advertised for AU$31000 (~RM100k) brand new.
But that ends up being the bo0g standard baseline model without anything, not even parking sensors.
Oh and it turns out it’s manual. Automatic adds AU2k (RM6k) to the cost.
Add all the features you expect in a modern sedan, and the price goes up by a few grand.
Add leather seats (like the budget camry/accord/teana/maxima sedan cars sold as luxury sedans in malaysia) and HID lights and the price approaches AU$42k (~RM140k).
Then there’s registration, plates, and INSURANCE (who buys a new car with third party cover?). So add an extra AU$3.5k.
So a car that seemed to cost AU31k (keyboard reviewers searching car websites) ends up costing more like AU45k (RM150k) driveaway insured.
That’s not that far away from the price of a accord or camry in malaysia. Keep in mind they are marketd as luxury cars in malaysia and are usually kitted out.
TLDR: The luxury version of budget cars are sold in malaysia for a premium price. Not all of the price is explained by tax.
Mint Berry Crunch, GDP per capita income of Australians are about 3x what the GDP per capita of what Malaysians earn. My friend kerja bodoh in Australia also can get AUD$100,000 per annum. So even if your specced up Camry is AUD42,000, average Australian can buy 2 or 3 Camrys with what they earn per annum.
In Malaysia, with what I earn per annum, I don’t think I can even buy “half” a Camry lah. And I am a doctor!
Doctor Love?
From what I have read so far, its pretty obvious that the government is now playing further delay tactics, this time by pushing their responsibility to lower prices to manufacturers – which I believe is unfair.
How do you expect the carmakers to implement anything properly – when the policy up until today made by the Govt , is still very much UNCLEAR???
I still remember how much promises they made before election, just to turn around now after winning by giving this bullcrap… simply NOT sincere in making changes.
Bad news for Audi’s A6 Hybrid?
Should still be a gap there though, as this exemption isn’t 100% compared to the A6’s
I assume the road tax is still high due to 3.0L engine. At least people can still get the superb straight six engine at a lower price as well as lower fuel consumption.
Don’t be so naive everybody.
If I am the Boss, and through my talis, I know that the taxes for my about-to-be-launched cars are to be reduced, I will annouce a 150% higher than intended prices. When the tax reduction is announced, I will berpura-pura announce price reduction and the benefit is given to rakyats. Haha.
I am not commenting on any particular car brands, everybody can just give my comment a thought. You think about it.
Still as a “Dream” car for most of the rakyat in Bolehland….car that can own in the dream……
I’ve no idea that this car is super cheap in other countries that most of the citizens there can buy it without a second thought.
Wow,I must be behind times.
listen listen listen, you’re not behind times.
you’re just deprived of any say for the last 50 years.
sharipah said if other country is cheaper what are you guys doing in malaysia? go venezuela la. let sharipah & co live in malaysia.
Boleh la tu….kat men nk order ni??…waiting list lame tak??
Boleh la tu….kat mane nk order ni??…waiting list lame tak??
i was hoping the price of 3 series would be 150k..but nahh..not even 1 series
I find it hard to believe that the EEV plan can actually bring some good things, they had my curiosity, but now they have my attention. Still not looking forward to to the new NAP, but I’m certainly interested on what’s to come.
So both BMW are slashed by, to me , A huge margin. Makes it closer to the upcoming A6 hybrid. But the A6 is a 5 series size sedan, and with the rumored price of 288k, it is still cheaper than the smaller 3 series hybrid. It won’t give Audi hell, but it certainly did heat up the premium hybrid battlefield that people like me can only dream on.
Nonsence pricing, what’s the purpose of buying hybrid? To safe fuel and Eco friendly, ended you pay your life time money for one car
well your statement could only be true if applied on these BMWs. A Toyota hybrid doesn’t cost you your kidney.
Now why would u buy a toyota hybrid? Cheapest prius c about 99k. U buy suzuki swift or fiesta for about 85k, u save about 14k. That 14k u can pay for your roadtax n fuel for a few years. Ron97 summore.
not to mention RM0 to repair the battery. RM0 to repair the electric motor. RM0 to repair the whatever electric system.
RM14k for petrol and you could consider to actually keeping the vehicle after 5 years. too small of a car can give to your daughter, grandkids, niece or someone else in the family to drive.
could you say the same for a toyota hybrid?
U ada connection, u can get so-called-EEV savings and pretend to lower price so that more ppl can afford.
Hello…those can afford RM400k car can also afford RM600k lah…tax savings for them?
Hwat about
work harder bro…don’t complaint here and there…..if u can’t afford, just by toyota hybrid…
Work harder my ass la bro , u think people are not working hard enough .silly you ! You work too hard you sacrifice your family quality time and who suffers ? The society as a whole . The crux of the matter is car prices in Malaysia are insanely overpriced due to the stupid government policy. Dont simply talk through your areshole without using your brain . Im fed up with silly people like you . Why cant we complain if the governemnt policies are detrimental to our quality of life ? Shut just up and work like robots ?
I guess Magane could not work harder, he prefer to complain and complian and complain although he can’t afford even toyota. Seeking for attention using his pathetic nonsense attitude. Try find other forum to highlight your pathetic comments.
Grow up, please comment more related to this article! Although u can’t afford one!
this albert is clearly no einstein! Kekeke
Even it’s Toyota Prius , not many would able to earn this >100k car. We are paying too much for those fark people
It’s time to tech them a lesson, want to own a lot of money, work harder!
still expensive , if it was below the average price of the 3 or 5 series , then it would make a lot of sense, say, starting from RM180k – RM 280k
hallo! it is below a 335i price…
It will probably take a 100 years to break even by paying a hefty premium to get the active hybrid compared to the petrol variant. better off getting the diesel instead i think if u want to safe fuel.
having said that, companies should bring in 2.0 hybrids or lower and sell those instead of the normal variant..its a loophole in the system that can push car prices down..
They are now cheaper than the 335i and 535i on which they are based so how will it need to break-even??
Cannot sell that’s why they reduce the price. C’mon Malaysian, let’s boycott further and let’s hope they will reduce further.
the headline is freaaking misleading!!! i thot the price wd drop to 130k from 280k of the non hybrid version, bfor i find out that the originalprice was almost halfa million ringgit. Baru nak suruh parents beli -_-
I wish they bring 316i here.
singapore already get one recently.
this policy on efficient vehicles should extend to diesels too.. so we can see more small and medium size cars with diesel engine.. ford did with the last gen focus here.. it is a best seller for focus
Nice but still way way way out of my reach
Anyone knows how they classify? Because it effectively cuts the price of the corresponding 335i and 535i models
Unless they are going to kill off the 335i and 535i in Malaysia, but keep just the 535i GT only.
It would have been better if it was ‘price reduced TO 140-150k’, and not BY.
Quoted – “This lops RM140k and RM150k respectively from the asking price”. Can buy another new car already with this savings.
Buy for mistress?
Right… Base price is just USD$50k, add all the options and sales tax, it’s still just USD$80k = RM240k. Now you see that at RM398k, BMW Malaysia will pocket almost RM160k more than their BMW dealer friends in the USA.
Duty reduction is only 50% compared to 100% of other hybrids.
really can’t understand why would they need a hybrid for such a huge engine..
335 is classified as a performance car and a hybrid in it?
it makes more sense to put hybrid in 320 or 325 and price it reasonably..
Wait for the BMW 2.0 hybrid. If there is tax exemption, can have it good price.
One thing I understand is, they aren’t going for efficiency but performance (in this case efficiency is a by-product). The tax we pay is also based on cc….. so pity us. Unless there are other focus, our market is too small to command a specialized model….. so we have to live with it. Go buy the A6 Hybrid if u can afford and don’t like the Prius or Lexus CT200H or the Honda pseudo-hybrids.
at UK the AH3 sell price is around 41k pound and AH5 is 47K pound. seem at here the price still double.
Now you see who is playing the game! don’t simply blame gov for the nonsense tax structure..hahaha
er…i think MITI play their rules in fixing some car price and tax too.
they should introduced 3 series 2.0 hybrid so that can get 100% tax exemption and sell it at 150k, then only consider affordable! LOL
look at the bright side, singapore even worst. look at norway and denmark. its realli bad. besides, not all european driving AH3 & AH5. most of them oni drives basic spec 3 or 5 series. even their CLS doenst have LED in their headlight. if these cars were to be sold in malaysia at RM 300K rather RM500. Malaysian still will whine: ” Why Conti cars doenst have Xenon, Led…blabla…..”
in europe, those who buy basic spec BMW, pay basic price for these basic spec BMW cars.
in MY, if sell basic spec BMW at premium prices, who buys? ( in MY, BMW = premium prices. prices inflated either due to BMW MY, G or both, right? )
someone in BMW has the correct government links. it’s unfair isn’t it? the rest of the players are stuck thinking the limit is 2.0. and suddenly a larger capacity engined hybrid gets tax breaks. :)
oh well, it’s good for the consumer i guess.
Cant really understand.. under what clause and what policy these cars are exempted.. AFAIK, EEV policy not yet in place??
If these cars exempted.. how about mazda 6 with i-eloop??
most likely it needs to be a hybrid of some sort meaning there must be an electric motor somewhere that provides drive and also able to run on full electric
Hybrid cars are supposed to be fuel saving and cheaper than fuel cars, what the hell for this kind of big cc and so expensive hybrid cars? only for the rich to show off, Fxxk. The high prices u pay for, is more than enough to buy the fuel for your life of driving.
Change Gahmen in PRU13, oppo promise cheaper car. we oledi dekcuf up with current gahmen, try pkr satu round..if umno really the saviour of human kind then we change back to umno la…apa ada hal..kahkahkah.
What about the other hybrid cars???lexus n infiniti…does this eev thingy apply to them too???
Instead, they should introduce policy of how much fuel burnt per km to get the tax exemption. Then big cc sure texable, and they deserve it!
Sigh… still bloody expensive.
Dear Anthony Lim,
What about Cayenne hybrid or Touareg hybrid. Both Suvs are using 3.0L engine as well.
Hope Dato’ Mustapha look into this segment as well. I mean better yet is to include diesel engine because the hybrid and diesel engine technolgies are meant to reduce fuel consumption.
kalo underseat tak karat then ok la for the price….i bought the 320 new from A.Bavaria and the seat is karat..only realize it after googling 320i problem….sigh~
For EEV, look no further than modern diesels. They’re fun to drive too. The F30 BMW 320d comes with a large battery which drives all electric AC, power steering, cooling fans, with the alternator charging up low battery especially when engine at idle or coasting.
I should qualify for some tax exemption having very much lower carbon footprint than the hybrid-3
Owh one more thing…mistsubishi mirage also very good for non hybrid car…so this eev thingy should.include it….this mean cheaper price tag…more accessible for fresh graduate n unemploy person like me…so i would.hv more options for my first car….
still bloogdy expensve
no need argue so much. just buy Mazda 6 and use it ;)
One moment i thought it’s going for 140k-150k..
Great article. I will always and forever be a true blue BMW guy. They’re the best.
I am so depressed seeing those numbers
I’d say this is good news for the upcoming Audi A6, the AH5 has even more BHP than the 535i, and a whopping 100k cheaper. This means the A6 hybrid could be way cheaper than the A6 2.0.
holly shit government! working for a whole full year also not enough to pay just for the tax!
Of course the government is controlling the prices…….If one car maker sells it too low, then another car maker will then file a complain to the relevant authorities. ESPECIALLY if no IMPORTANT ppl are gaining from it, directly or indirectly. Why do you think some cars get better pricing structure than others? At the end of the day the OFFICIAL excuse and also VALID reason is that we are to protect our car industry and also the pockets of the IMPORTANT ppl (directly or indirectly)….AND for all those peeps who didnt get the gist of it, yes this BMW exercise is to increase its sell-ability and also to take advantage of a tax rule exemption that was bent to the advantage of IMPORTANT ppl (directly or indirectly)
Let’s make it more cheaper by voting in PR
Wow, this couldn’t be any more obvious then it is at PLAIN SIGHT. BMW are NOT supposed to be eligible for this TAX exemption. More reasons of boycotting brand new cars in Malaysia.
