Volkswagen has revealed the initial details of its new Golf R Cabriolet, which joins the Golf R and Scirocco R in the lineup. The very first open-top R model – which was teased in concept form at last year’s Worthersee tuning show – wears the same EA113 2.0 litre TSI as its AWD hatchback sibling, but in this case shares the same power output as the FWD Scirocco R, at 265 PS.
Mated to a six-speed DSG gearbox, the Golf R does the century sprint in 6.4 seconds and gets to an electronically-limited 250 km/h top speed. That’s pretty rapid, as last month’s video preview of the car showed.
The topless Golf R gets a bespoke front bumper with gloss-black grille and ‘R’ logo, gloss-black door mirror casings and rear diffuser as well as black-painted brake calipers with R markings.
Also on, side sill extensions, LED daytime running lights, bi-xenon headlights with black housings and smoked rear LED tail lamps, as well as an ‘R’ suspension which lowers the car by 25 mm over the standard Cabriolet. Wheel choices are 18- or 19-inch Talladega units, either in Sterling Silver or an optional high-gloss black.
The interior gets dressed with sports seats in Vienna Cool Leather and ‘R’ logos on the head restraints, while the leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel, handbrake grip and gear lever all feaure contrasting grey stitching.
Like the standard Cabriolet, the fully-electric insulated hood can be lowered in 9.5 seconds at speeds of up to 30 km/h, and raised in 11.0 seconds.
