Next Toyota Supra may get 2.5L turbo hybrid powertrain with 400 hp, could surface by 2017

autowp.ru_toyota_ft-hs_concept_5

This certainly isn’t the first time you’ve heard of a future successor to the Toyota Supra, but a recent report by Motor Trend has shed some light on a possible powertrain.

The report says the car may receive more than 400 hp from a turbocharged 2.5 litre four-cylinder engine with a hybrid system, and that a concept could emerge this year at the Tokyo motor show before the production car’s targeted launch in end-2017.

A reinforced version of the Toyota 86‘s platform is to be used, and a mid-mounted 3.5 litre V6 hybrid powertrain remains a possibility. A source has told the US magazine that the new car’s body will be bigger than the 86’s and draw design inspiration from the 2007 Detroit show’s FT-HS concept (pictured).

The report further states that BMW will contribute to the car’s suspension settings and handling (as part of its tie-up with Toyota), that the next Z4 will also use a strengthened version of the 86 platform and that the German company is testing its own V6 hybrid unit that will produce the same power as the new Toyota.

supra is legendary, but hybrid sound lame in sport car , rather dual clutch or Twin turbo into it , some more 2017 launch is aged for 400hp only

400hp may not sound much, but there is electric motor that gives some fat torque at 0rpm.

this is one reason on why VW and Audi can win road racing and rallying using turbodiesel engines. look at recent Dakar rally, current WRC and also Le Mans which Audi won for the past 3 years. high torque which capable of propelling a car fast

        • You don’t win races just by being quick in a straight line. The more power an electric motor is capable, the more weight it’ll add to the car. The more weight, the worse the handling.

Dude, you should have/drive hybrid before, and wish the assist that you get from hybrid motor to be more, cause it means torque, it’ll stick your body to the chair.. it also serves as a turbo.. Now, imagine what it could bring to a supercar with adequate amount of juice. :)
btw, who said hybrid means green?

  • Hybrid.. on a Supra.. facepalm… Best is there are no hybrid system at all, but since it will have, I hope it’s just a KERS system rather than those Prius hybrid system.

If Toyota can do like Honda did, it would be great.
But Honda already patern it. So Toyota can’t use that tech.

I think Honda Earth Dream Hybrid is still the best for sport car platform. SH-AWD.

If the concept if a hybrid Toyota supra works, I don’t see what’s wrong with a hybrid Supra, considering high end Marques like McLaren, Ferrari and Porsche are using it on their coming flagship cars. But it should have at least a V6 and 500bhp to counter the NSX, the original Mk IV supra was also design as an contender to the original NSX.

Hopefully it will be as awesome as the LFA and 1/6 the price. Being based on the 86 platform, it should be good, the 86 has a brilliantly designed and engineered chassis.

Supra should have a N/A or turbocharged V6, not hybrid gay sh*t from Prius because Supra means a lot to car mod’s fans!

Now I-3, then V-6. So based on testers reports saying that the I-3 sounded much like the I-6, this V-6 plant should sound like the esteemed V-12, isn’t it BieM?
