Pininfarina Sergio Concept – fitting tribute to a legend

Sergio1

Tributes come in all sizes, big and small, but when it comes to honouring the late boss of esteemed design house Pininfarina, only a stunning Ferrari concept would suffice. The Sergio Concept celebrates the man who led Pininfarina for 40 years and conceived many of its greatest car legends. It’s styled as a two-seater barchetta, is based on a Ferrari 458 Spider and lives off the spirit of Sergio Pininfarina.

Following the long-standing Pininfarina tradition, the Sergio (previously previewed here and here) is built on an existing production car, custom-made and specifically designed for ‘special’ clients. It’s only fitting that it wears a Ferrari badge, as Sergio’s legend has been based on many such creations, not least the Dino Berlinetta Speciale of 1965.

A magnificent mix of old, new and bizarre design touches presented in a beautifully finished carbonfibre body makes the Sergio Concept as striking as the famed styling house’s best creations. The tiny half doors sit flush within the bodywork, and opens in a unique 45-degree arc.

It eschews traditional elements such as a windscreen – modern aerodynamics have advanced so far that it’s not needed anymore, using clever ducts and air manipulations guiding the air above and beyond the occupants’ heads. The matching helmets are there for style, not function.

The interior and mechanicals are all that of the Ferrari 458 Spider, bar minor detailing touches. It’s lighter and stiffer than the donor vehicle too – thanks to a lot of carbonfibre – so it’ll do 0-100 km/h in less than 3.4 seconds and race beyond 320 km/h. Imagine doing that without a windscreen.

As of now, the Sergio is nothing more than a design masterpiece. Pininfarina being Pininfarina however, a limited series production is not ruled out, pending generous offers from ‘special’ clients.

I thought Sergio is an underwear maker. I have an underwear named Sergio. I did not know they make cars.

  • Sometimes, very rare, the car world comes out with a beauty that no words can ever describe. This is one of those rare moments, the unveiling of the pininfarina Sergio.

The other thing that amazes me is that the recent Ferrari F70(will never call it by its real name still), is the first Ferrari to be designed in-house and not by Pininfarina or Bertone or Scaglietti.
