Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV extended range electric SUV set for Malaysian launch by end 2013

Not content with having the Mitsubishi i-MiEV as the only car with next generation powertrain technologies under the hood, Mitsubishi is already planning it’s next energy efficient vehicle. A Mitsubishi spokesperson announced today at E-Mobilia World that the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV would be coming to Malaysia by the end of 2013.

The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is a plug-in extended range four-wheel drive capable EV version of Mitsubishi’s Outlander SUV. It’s powered by a 300 volt 12 kWh battery, which drives two independent electric motors that drive both the front and rear axle, hence giving the Outlander PHEV four-wheel drive capability. Both permanent magnet synchronous motors each offer a 60 kW output, and in terms of torque the front unit delivers 137 Nm, while the rear motor has 195 Nm.

The two motors are integrated with Mitsubishi’s S-AWC (Super All Wheel Control) integrated vehicle dynamics control system. The Outlander PHEV can travel on electric power alone for up to 60 km, up to a maximum speed of 120 km/h. If that’s not enough for you, a 94 hp 2.0 litre MIVEC engine will power up. It doesn’t drive the wheels directly, but generates electricity for the motors to use.

Thanks to the generator, the Outlander PHEV is said to be able to travel a maximum range of 880 km with a full charge as well as a full tank of fuel. More than enough for balik kampung trips.

    • When the Mitsubishi I-MIEV was launched few weeks back, it retailed at RM136k and in japan it retailed at ¥3,800,000 (RM125k), so rather marginally close. In Japan Mitsubishi is asking ¥3,324,000(base spec) to ¥4,297,000(highest spec)…that’s RM109,000 to RM141,000. So basically around RM120k to RM160k if the guv dosen’t taxed it heavily, it’s still an EV, after all. below RM180k for a REEV SUV, it’s quite the bargain.

Mitsubishi seems to move forward a lot lately.

  • If it’s below RM180k, this could quite literally be the bargain of the year. Agreed, unlike the I-MIEV, you still have to contribute some cash to the petrol and service station, but it’s closer to an EV than a hybrid and the performance figure is outstanding. 330+Nm and from an electric motors that generates that at zero (but 94hp from a 2.0l MIVEC?). This is going to be great if correctly price below bout 180k. MMM is really moving forward lately.

It seems Mits is making a comeback, just when T & H got nothing new. If this SUV goes for under 250K, I’m so going to buy it, not gonna to wait for the new Santa Fe anymore.

  • This is superb. Does anyone have any idea whether it’s a seven-seater? If so, I’ll seriously consider getting it.

Unfortunately the PHEV version is only a 5 seater, Mitsu had to eliminate the 3rd row to make room for some of the electronics components
