VIDEO: Design chief explains Subaru WRX Concept

The delectable Subaru WRX Concept, which recently surfaced at the 2013 New York International Auto Show, gets detailed in this video by design department GM Osamu Namba. You might very well agree though, that you wouldn’t need to understand its aesthetics to deem this Scooby one easy-on-the-eye brute.

All the same, the 57 year-old dissects the car from fore to aft, introducing you to distinctive elements such as the hexagonal grille, hawk-eye headlamps and how they fit into what he calls a “pulled-back” look. He also talks about the smooth coupe-like side profile, the sharp-edged boot lid and the yellow-ringed quad tailpipes.

If hope does indeed spring eternal, we hope very, very hard that the production version won’t stray too far from this looker here.

  • Goes to show that good designer can still come from Asia, like Sangyup Lee who penned the retro-tistic Chevy Camero and amazing Stingray concept. If this design goes 70% unchanged (I still want higher rear roof-line)into production with a distinctive burbly sounding Flat-4 Turbo and 4WD, It will certainly smack me away. First Hyundai & Kia, now Subaru, ugly duckling turning into a majestic swan.

Oh Please production WRX don’t fail me.

The only people who can dislike this car is only those LanEvo fanboys.
Subaru, hope your performance can match or better than CLA 45 AMG.

Starting to feel the effects Toyota has on Subaru after being part of the Fuji committee board, and it’s a good thing!

Toyota has so many things to share with Subaru. Whether its their D4-S, transmission, reliability, quality or ability to sell their cars, Subaru is going to be big, and strong!!

Can’t imagine what beast will they make if they combine Subaru’s F4 engine, turbo-know-how, all-wheel-drive handling with Toyota’s D4-S, transmission from Aisin AW and durability.

Not only the young or ah-beng or the ‘cannot afford’ will say this car is very good looking.
So, the production version doesn’t need to be toned down; just keep it 100% intact.

Much better looking than previous generations, but resemble Evo 9 look at the front. What is more important would be what is lurking under the bonnet.

these comments are so tired. of course parts of one car look like another car. how many possible combinations of lines are there? then how many shapes are there that meet safety requirements?

Please, unless a car is a direct copy – just stop with the “it looks sort of like this and that and that” comments. it’s car, it’s going to look like other cars. there is no need to point that out. these kind of commentators are starting to sound like idiots that commented that the galaxy looks like an iphone because both are squarish, has a screen and a home button.

The looks fits the image of the car really well. The current model is too “normal” for my liking. A car like these needs to be on the edge in terms of design. Hope production version is not too dissimilar to the concept version. Starting to like Scooby.
