Nissan announces global recall for airbag inflator – four units of the CBU X-Trail involved in Malaysia

nissan-x-trail

Last week, Toyota announced a recall to address the issue of a possible improperly manufactured passenger side front airbag inflator, one that involves 18,700 units of the Camry and Corolla Altis. Now, Nissan has done the same for the Cube, X-Trail, Maxima and Teana models that were manufactured from August 2000 to January 2004

The recall involves a total of 480,000 units of the abovementioned vehicles. Nissan will check and, if necessary, replace the potential faulty front passenger air bag inflator. Incorrect propellant wafers with insufficient density installed in certain inflators of the front passenger’s airbag may cause the internal pressure of the inflator to rise excessively during deployment.

Edaran Tan Chong Motor clarifies that only four CBU imported units of the Nissan X-Trail are affected by this global recall. CKD units of the SUV are not affected.

Tan Chong Express Auto Service Centre has identified the affected units and will contact the owners for further action. There will be no parts or labour charges, of course.

I pity those driving Xtrail CBU from grey importer. If there’s any.

    • I pity those CKD units. Don’t know if it’s because don’t have airbags or airbag is faulty too but local vendor don’t want to recall.

      ETCM, clarify this please?

Nissan is still known as an old man car. So once all the old foggies die, and no youngsters buy Nissan, is ETCM going to close down?

ETCM don’t care a damn. Remember the statement by their CEO that they support high taxes and high car prices? yes, the statement that just supported the 2nd hand industry but forgot the wellbeing of the remaining 30 million people in Malaysia?

So, if the CEO himself talk like that, you think ETCM care about safety? You think they will make recalls even if there are recalls?

Air bags? Is that all. What about flood relieve buttons? Shouldn’t be hard. Just add on and the car goes up. Help..lots of cars have gone wasted.

This is a safety recall. Make an appointment with ETCM and get it replaced and you’re on your way. When it comes to safety, they don’t discriminate whether your’s a CBU or CKD. You won’t know your airbags works or not until it’s ‘tested’ to deploy.

    • ETCM cakap only CBU gets replacement (according to article). CKD most probably they’ll advise you to claim from your wallet, but do check it out for others to know.

I am guessing Hyundai Kia is using old technology passed from Japan..

  • Vehicle parts are multi-sourced, so CKD and CBU might not have the same supplier. It’s very easy for Tan Chong to ignore these four units, but they did the right thing to inform them. Since they are transparent about these CBU units, there’s no reason to suspect they would “hide” any truths regarding CKD units. Anyway, it’s a manufacturer recall, so the costs is taken care of by Nissan Japan. This is a commendable action by Tan Chong, something you won’t get from grey importers.

    • The defect is manufacturing defect or design defect? Anyone has news on this?

If it’s a design defect and the design is passed on to local parts manufacturer = same issue as well.

in cases like this.. its usually the fault of the vendor.. during testing, small custom made batches are made for the manufacturer for testing.. once its concluded, i assume they will pass on the final requirements to the vendor who will then proceed to mass produce these items in the hundreds of thousands…

as far as i know its MY Gov doesn’t have enough LAW to govern car that sold in MY. say US, their NHTSA will comes at any car maker that sell lemons, IF they found defects! Even blurry(mostly plastic) Headlight need to recall! but MY Gov doesn’t have to ball regulate this…. i can see Vios, Camry, G.Livina, CRV and many more with blurry eyes……
